I'm torn on what to give as a rating because both the food and service was very top notch at Ko. But OMG the heat. I cannot get over how uncomfortably hot the restaurant was. There are ceiling fans throughout the restaurant but since we weren't sitting anywhere near one I was drenched in sweat before the night was over. I actually couldn't finish my meal and we passed on dessert because we just had to get out of there and back into our air conditioned car. But let's talk food. We got the oishi sushi and macadamia nut crusted shrimp as appetizers and they are delicious. I wouldn't have ordered the shrimp typically just because I'm not a huge fan, but after reading countless yelp reviews singing its praises I had to try it out for myself. And it was to die for. Especially the accompanying sauce. For dinner I ordered the lamb, which comes with a side of Molokai sweet potato mash (unless you want to swap it out with another starch). I'm glad I didn't because that sweet potato mash was wonderful. I also want to give a shout out to the complimentary bread... 3 different types, served with three different sauces was a definite delightful surprise. Some other facts: Based on photos of both the restaurant and the dishes served I thought people would be dressed up and kids would not be welcome. Both were incorrect assumptions. So bring on your shorts, slippers and kids. I read a lot of reviews about the restaurant being very prompt so when we got there a few minutes early and got drinks from the bar I decided to start timing them. Sure enough we were escorted to our seat exactly at 8 pm for our reservations made for that time. Ask for the kama'aina rate (aka for Hawaii residents only). The discount here is truly amazing - buy one appetizer and get a second for free. Buy one entree and get a second for free. And get 25% of the drinks bill. We saved over $70! If they could fix the heat issue I'd be changing this to 5 stars at once, but as it is, I would be wary about heading back there to have that much uncomfortableness (as to hinder my appetite) during a pricy meal. read more

The reason why I am giving it three stars is because my meal- the seafood lau lau- was just heavily over cooked. The flavors were utterly incredible, so this made me so sad. However, when you are paying $50 for a dish it should be cookies to perfection and back. My scallops were extremely tough and the fish was a little dried out. Again, I am so sad to be giving it this rating because what my friends got was so yummy. My friend got the shrimp and scallop pancit and the flavors were delicious. Our first time at Ko was back in August of 2022 and it was WOW a 10/10. We arrived at the beautiful Fairmont hotel and we were sat almost immediately without a reservation. Now for the food: For an appetizer we ordered Lumpia which was crunchy with good flavor. For main courses we ordered: The Korean braised short rib: The meat was tender and paired well with the mash potato. The Fresh Catch which was mahi mahi in the Lemongrass Coconut Broth: The broth was nice and did not have an overwhelming coconut flavor. The flavors blended extremely well together without one flavor overpowering each other. The fish was fresh and buttery. A side of tempura lobster: It was light and battered --very nice. We went to Ko with a local friend. We were treated as a return guest due to his extensive dining history there. We ordered four appetizers (peppered shrimp, lavender battered tempura shrimp, rock-seared ahi (you sear it yourself at the table on a very hot rock), and calamari. All were excellent, and except for the peppered shrimp, all came with excellent dipping sauces. The restaurant serves a complimentary bread selection with three different dipping sauces, including one made from edamame (my favorite). My wife and I split an macadamia nut-crusted opakapaka served with Okinawan sweet potatoes, greens and ginger in a really good sweet sauce. Our host had the tempura-battered lobster, which was excellent also! Excellent service, excellent ambience, and as an added bonus, our table was next to a private party complete with live music, hula dance, and a fire dancer! We were seated in an area far away from everyone in a nice quiet garden area and it was very romantic. We ordered wine and a banana bread old fashioned. We had lunch there, and despite not being a guest at the resort, didn't feel second-class citizens (as you sometimes do) in any way. A relatively new restaurant located in the Fairmont in Waikiki. The theme is an interesting medley of different types of Asian food. While the food was good, I'm not sure that it really worked for me. The house "bread" plate that they give you is a medley of bread, rice crackers, lavender butter, edamame hummus, and hot sauce. Not bad, but to be honest, I prefer more of the traditional hot bread and butter combo. To start, we ordered a plate of the kobe beef poke which was seasoned nicely with the rich taste of the marinade it was soaked in. For my main, I ordered the bone in rib eye which comes with a purple sweet potato mash and some veggies. The husband got the pork chop which came with mashed potatoes and veggies. Both proteins were huge, much bigger than we expected. We both liked his pork chop better - it had just the right amount of gristle and was nicely cooked. My rib eye was a little more disappointing - it was over salted and I did not like that sweet potato mash at all. It was too sweet and I didn't think it paired well with the other flavors on the plate. For dessert, we ordered the lilikoi cheesecake which was thick yet fluffy. It's a pretty small portion size so only split between two people if you're already pretty stuffed. I stayed at the Fairmont for a week, so I frequented this restaurant a few times for lunch and dinner. Both were great! My all time new favorite drink is the Moana Mist. I had a few a day, haha. It's a refreshing vodka based drink, perfect for the beach scene. For starters, I highly recommend the Ahi on the rock. They bring a super hot stone out and you sear your own fresh ahi tuna for 5 sec per side. I also really enjoyed the honey lavender and macadamia nut shrimp for starter. Just went for my sisters early birthday celebration and our first experience was excellent. The staff is very welcoming. Service was met and they also offer discount for locals which is always great. Sushi was so ono and the lavender shrimp was awesome! For entrees I got the shrimp noodles which tasted like my home back in the PH. I enjoyed it so much i had to take it home to share with the rest of the family. My sister got the short ribs and it was so soft and filled with flavor. We go here every time we make our way to Maui and it never disappoints. The food, the setting, and the staff are always a joy.

After once declining an invite to dine at Ko due to menu selection and price, I hesitantly jumped in with both feet, party because it was the last day of Wailea Restaurant Week, but mostly because we were taking a good friend out to dinner, and this was the spot she chose. ATMOSPHERE: Ko is located poolside in the Fairmont Kea Lani. The open air restaurant features trendy decor, spacious booths, high tops, regular tables, and odd bar seating that's split in half; one half of the circular bar is traditional seating while the other half sits on the floor below about 4 steps down, giving diners privacy but no view of anything besides the wall holding up the bar counter. MENU: It's a pricey mashup of dishes of the main ethnicities that make up Hawaii - Japanese, Chinese, Filipino, and Hawaiian with American influences. Being that they were participating in the restaurant week, they had a 3-course special for $49 with nice options. FOOD: House Bread - Two styles of bread were offered, a 9-grain furikake (roasted sesame seeds & dried seaweed) crusted bread, and focaccia. There were three spreads to choose from; a spicy Korean BBQ which was an odd choice for a bread topping and would taste better on meat, a lavender infused butter which was light and creamy though I couldn't detect any lavender flavor, and an edamame hummus which was okay and very mildly flavored. I'd prefer plain old butter. Portuguese Bean Soup - Normally $14 - The soup was hearty with lots of beans and veggies. The flavor was spot on to traditional homemade recipes but there was some kind of added spice, which I thought was cinnamon, but turned out to be a special seasoning blend that is sold at one of the hotel's shops across from the restaurant. My inquisitive friend asked for the recipe, and would you know that they brought out a nicely printed version of it, every ingredient listed. Apparently they also have a cookbook for sale. Great service! Beef Short Ribs - I usually opt for fish or something that I can't cook for myself at home, but I thought I'd take the chance on this one. Normally priced at a whopping $46 alone, the boneless pieces of very tender meat were nicely marinated and grilled, and came over a delicious congee, or rice porridge, which tasted just like my mom's homemade jook. Good dish, but it should be priced $10 less, due to the amount of meat you receive, and the simple ingredients that make up this dish. DESSERT: Maui Vanilla Bean Brûlée - The three of us ordered off the restaurant week menu so we each chose one of the three desserts offered which usually sells for $15 each. This was my favorite of the bunch. It's a traditional brûlée with a creamy vanilla center that wasn't overly sweet. Wailua Estate Chocolate Baked Custard - My second favorite of the trio, were thin slices of chocolate cake with a crunchy crust topping, and thin layer of custard in between. Not overly sweet and great for the chocolate fan. My same curious friend asked what the recipe was for the crunchy topping. While my other friend and I held our heads down in embarrassment, our awesome server brought out yet another recipe for him. Amazing. Plantation Pineapple Cake - The shiny cake looked like a giant scallop on the plate. The yellow cake was too wet for my liking, and overall was too sweet and drowned in a fruity sauce. Pass. SERVICE: Host service was friendly and welcoming. Our server, Serena, was awesome. Very friendly, patient, professional, and even conquered two abnormal requests from our presumptuous friend. We were dining well past their closing time of 9pm and never felt rushed or given an attitude. TIP: Ko offeres a kama'aina BOGO special on entrees. Was a bit disappointed that they no longer offered the cultural experience this year but since we had such a great experience there last year, we figured that we would go for my b-day dinner this year and am I glad we did. If you remember last year, the "bread" was already a highlight and rave worthy in itself, taro buns, furikake bread, rice crackers accompanied by 2 edamame hummus, lavender butter, and Korean bbq sauce for your dippers. So you won't feel so bad about the high entrée prices after you polish off all the bread and will have leftovers of the entrée for a lunch, well at least for me especially since we finally ordered and split the seared ahi on the rocks app where you get to sear your own sashimi grade ahi yourself at the table on a hot rock. How hubby managed to finish off a 3 course of mauka harvest salad complete with pohole ferns, pork chops, and dessert was beyond me, although admittedly, I did help when it came to the flourless red velvet cake dessert but hey, can't blame me since it came with a candle and a Happy B-day chocolate on top of it. Came for the "three course cultural experience" menu. It was very tasty, starting out with the breads. They brought over bread sprinkled with furikake, rolls and crispy rice cracker which you can mix and match with lavender butter, edamame hummus or Korean BBQ sauce. I would say the best was the BBQ sauce, tangy with a little bit of heat. Next best was the hummus heaped on the bread. Finally I used the butter on the rolls, all were delicious. Next came the Sushi, covered in a little bit of tempura batter, flash fried and covered in a sauce. Crispy shell and raw fish. Yum. Now the main course, the rib eye steak with Molokai Sweet Potato and a small side of seasonal vegetables. Cooked medium, the beef was very tender and juicy. I decided to save half my steak in order to be able to eat dessert. Finally the best part, Dessert! Banana Lumpia with ice cream, and caramel sauce. Contrasting crispy shell and soft banana with the rapidly melting ice cream. Excellent. I felt this was well worth the price, and the sunset and live music made for a great atmosphere. The only catch was at 5pm, he sun was still very warm, but the temperature was mild after the sun went down. There was once couple that opted for the "Twilight Romantic Dinner" in a cabana by the adult pool. They started on the wine and started on the bread during the time I had my appetizer and main course. When I finished my dessert, they finally started up on their main course.
