Get a second opinion We spent thousands of dollars there and an engine light came on a week later, we took it in and they tried to get another 3k for oxygen sensors. We got a second opinion after looking up how much they were overcharging for the sensors only to find there was nothing wrong with them just a dirty air filter. I went to the location at 908 Morse Ave, Schaumburg, IL 60193. It's been a very long time since I've had such a great customer experience. I unexpectedly got a flat tire while driving and called their shop at 4:35 PM to see if they can accommodate me and help get my flat tire fixed. Their hours online showed them closing at 5 PM. I spoke with Todd - he said that they were just getting ready to close but he would wait for me. I arrived a short time later and was out the door at 5:15 PM - he stayed late to help me get squared away. 5 stars all the way - definetly top notch customer service at a very affordable price. These guys are amazing! I was in town from Minneapolis to visit family and friends and work and ended up with a dead battery Friday afternoon on a 2020 car. I called K's on a friend's recommendation and spoke to Joe. Phones were ringing off the hook and they were fully booked but once I explained my situation he said "Go ahead and bring it in and we'll test your battery". I got a jump and hurried over. They had my car in to test within 10 min and battery replace in 30 minutes and sent me on my way, despite having more business than they could handle. Joe and Jonathan rock! K Auto helped me out with my normal oil change and they recommended that I got a coolant flush after they did a once over. They let me go into the shop to actually show me how bad my coolant was. DO NOT BRING YOUR CAR HERE! If there was a zero star I would give it to them. This place used to be called Dakota Auto Repair when I brought my daughters Honda Accord in for about a year an a half ago for a repair. They USED to do a great job and were honest mechanics. A few months ago a brought my girlfriends car in for an estimate on an oil leak. The shop must have been sold and the name had been changed to K Auto. The told us she needed a turbo and housing filter gasket. The cost would be $1900 and an additional $161 for "degreasing!" When I asked a couple questions they laughed and in a condescending manner told me that I must not know much about these turbo cars. I ended up taking her car to Grant's Shell down the street. Recommended by a friend. They were able to fix the oil leak for $285!!! Are you kidding me! read more

Seemed expensive I had my 2003 Honda Pilot in for an estimate when I needed my front struts and outer tie rod replaced. Their pricing came in at over $1200 when Firestone and Pep Boys came in at $650. Did the work at the latter with no hidden up charges. I had had recall work done on my fuel pump and then several days later it wouldn't start (It would turn over fine, but wouldn't fire). I suspected there might be a messed up connection from the work done, but I needed it fixed fast and these guys were in the neighborhood so instead of calling the dealer I just had them come and get it. I told them exactly what I suspected. I was quoted over a thousand dollars and several days of wait time to replace the entire fuel pump part. Not only that they told me they spoke with the manufacturer and that there was no way it had anything to do with the recall work.... Suspecting a scam or incompetence I nope'd out of there and got the dealer to tow it to their lot where they fixed their minor mistake (from the recall work) that same day. So they were just rather incompetent or deliberately trying to take me, either way steer clear of Dakota-K. Dakota-K you got your $200 towing and diagnostic fee from me, but for sure you won't be getting another dollar. read more

Disappointed... they are not skilled with foreign cars. Came in describing the issue as well as what I thought it was (height adjustment Sensor). After $360 in "diagnosing" they were still investigating.... I looked over their approach and it didn't make sense that they were testing the transmissions lines between the computers. A volt meter can due the test quite easily vs multiple days... After discussing the situation with Kevin, he didn't want to budge saying that their approach was valid. Took the truck to a competitor and didn't even tell them what I thought... they came back in an hour or so saying the Height adjustment sensor was failing.... So if you need an easy fix or your oil changed... then maybe try them... otherwise go somewhere else... maybe the brother at Dakota K on the north side of Arlington Heights is a better choice. Oh, at least at this location, the loaner cars are late model and I would not drive in them. read more

They added a $25 oil and fuel protection kit without my consent. Said my oil was burnt. My car has 11000 miles and I have religiously changed oil every 3000 miles. I asked how can that be? I brought my Ford Crown Victoria in for an oil change and to see about a problem I had with the power steering. The oil change was $45.00. It did not include a new air filter and I was fine with that, however Kevin who was at the counter told me that my pressure hose and switch for the power steering where both leaking and it would cost $443.04 to replace both the switch and the pressure hose. The switch would cost $73.36 and the pressure hose $125.77 the rest would be labor. He also told me that I would have to have the whole system flushed otherwise he couldn't honor any warranty and that would cost an additional $114.01 for a total of $557.05. I'm glad I only had him do the oil change and took my car to a friend who saw that it was only the switch that was leaking. We went to O'Reilly Auto Parts where I bought the new switch I needed for $35.99. It took my friend only 20 minutes to take the old switch out and put the new one in (including the time the put the car on a makeshift ramp). My friend also said it was obvious that it was only the switch that was leaking. As far as the system flush goes, there was no need because the power steering fluid was replaced with new as it was leaking out. Total job should not have cost $557.05 just $35.99 plus reasonable labor cost for about a half hour or less at an HONEST place. The thing is, if Dakota K would have charged me $250.00 I probably would have trusted them to do the job and been back for future work on all our cars. read more

Had my breaks done at the dealership. Afterwards braking caused loud clicking noise. Took it back to same dealership and they fixed it free of charge. The only problem was the noise was still there and I doubt they did anything but waste my time. I took a chance on these guys based on two friends who swore by them. I explained to them my issue and told them to reproduce the issue the brakes had to be hot. I dropped of the car in the morning and got a call from the them a little before lunch. They resurfaced and lubricated my back drum brakes and actually test drove the car and got the breaks hot to confirm that the problem was fixed. Imagine that though, they actually confirmed the issue was fixed. I picked up my car after work and my car has been fine ever since. Inexpensive, no upsell and great customer service. I highly recommend these guys and I have two friends who feel the same way as me. read more

1997 Toyota Camry with 31,000 real miles experiencing exhaust system noise. Asked for estimate (non-refundable/non-applicable to repair if authorized inspection/estimate fee of over $30 was agreed to and paid by me). Got 2 page extensive list of everything from head through muffler needing replacement at just under $1200. Asked whether something less extensive would work and was told No Way...Your whole system is rotted out end to end. Declined service and went to muffler shop in Elgin which expressly found Flex Pipe OK, Catalytic Converter OK, Muffler OK, etc. but needing $120 midpipe which did show rust and perforations. One hour later after repairs, car was totally without exhaust noise or any other exhaust related issues. Thought Dakota K was jerking me around because the car had just passed its emissions test with no problems and never showed any "check engine" lights. One week later at Toyota dealer for unrelated brake service, asked dealer's opinion: Absolutely no problems with your exhaust system, catalytic converter, etc. Geez... Really, Dakota K????? You've got my $30 plus for "inspection and estimate" but you will never, ever get a dime's worth of any other business from me or any friend, business associate or nearby neighbor I'm in any position to influence with this sorry tale of lapsed ethics and unscrupulous dealings. read more

I called to get an appointment for a Saturday to get my oil changed. The gentleman was very polite and accommodating at setting the appointment. I dropped my keys off in the night drop off box and indicated that I needed an oil change, however, I also made a note to inform them that my fob didn't work. They did the oil change and put synthetic oil in (which of course costs more than a normal oil change but didn't call to ask which oil I wanted) but that was okay because my understanding the synthetic is better for the vehicle. However, they put a new battery in my fob which technically I didn't ask them to do it was just a notation. When I picked up the vehicle the gentlemen at the counter were polite and friendly and informed me that my fob works now. (Like they did me a favor) After reviewing the invoice, I noticed my bill was for 87.00 for an oil change! When questioning the bill, they indicated that I requested them to look at my fob so they changed the battery because that it what it needed. Okay, maybe I was mistaken to put the notation that the fob didn't work but REALLY 34.00 and some change to replace a battery in a fob! ($11.00 for the actual battery and almost $23.00 for labor). When I continued to question the labor charges at which time I didn't notice was $23.00 (I thought it was the $11.00) the gentleman informed me that they had to research my battery type. (Still $23.00 worth of research) After going back and forth, he refunded the $11.00 which was really the battery amount not the labor charges which I had requested to be removed. So I paid $23.00 for them to put a battery in my fob which I could have purchased almost anyway and did it myself in less than 5 minutes and probably around $10.00. Obviously, when you go to this location you must be very specific on what work you want done and check prices before having any work done because they are price gougers. Don't let their friendliness fool you. read more
