2 of us arrived on a Saturday @ 10:45am & sat in the car until 11:00AM, which is Kabuki Sushi's online and posted on a sign. Lights are on, and we are the 1st customers. Go in the door @ a couple of minutes after 11:00AM, a woman standing in the entrance area staring at us, no sound, no words, almost like a statue. "Table for 3 please" she stares; then we ask: "are you open?, she stares and says "no, can you wait?" We tell her "Yes, how long?" she stares and mutters: "30 minutes". Returned @ 11:30AM and headed to a table. The Woman appears w/ menus and grunts something. Gave the joint the benefit of the doubt with the rough start to eating @ Kabuki Sushi. In hindsight, shulda gone w/ my gut with the cold welcome and fled. The food was bland. Bland Miso Soup [comparable to salted water] to the entree's, one of which came with sautéed vegetables that could have been served at Panda Express. Sashimi was small 1.5 inch square slices, that passed the smell test. My guess is that the original owner of Kabuki Sushi, established a good reputation for their food and service, then sold to current operator, who from all accounts likely only had worked in a low end Chinese restaurant. read more

Most of my days I have my husband on my mind. When we get the chance to enjoy a lunch together during the week I jump at it. We met here on a Thursday for a lunch around 1pm. We ordered all at once apps and rolls. I like Maguro Sashimi as my main course. The entree dish of Maguro Sashimi had one more piece of fish than the appetizer and for $1 less you get one less piece of fish on the app. I went with the app but in reality does it matter? My husband got the Dragon Roll and the Crunch Roll. We started with a serving of Miso soup. My husband hated it because it had so much Onion in it. I liked it. It was Miso with a twist. I like Onion on anything so I guess I'm easy. The Maguro wasn't terribly fresh. It was borderline fresh. It was right on the edge of fishiness. As to the rolls, the Crunch Roll had no flavor. But the Dragon Roll was pretty good. The best thing we ordered I think. Another noticeable thing for this place, there was no one else eating when we were here. I think someone came in to get a take out order of one roll but other than that it was dead as a piece of Maguro in here. Bad sign? Ive definitely had better in my life. UMMM...THIS WAS...QUITE AN EXPERIENCE. The "highlights" of our dinner, in chronological order (denoted with Roman numerals, just to be a pretentious douchebag): I) The banner outside read "ALL YOU CAN EAT Special Roll $16.99 SUN, MON, TUES, WED, THUR". Why can't they just say it's offered "Sunday through Thursday"? II) When we arrived inside, the hostess immediately offered us the All You Can Eat menu...on a Friday. I thought the "Special Roll" was only available "SUN, MON, TUES, WED, THUR". (We later learned that they offer the "Special Roll" everyday. The banner, therefore, speaks lies. Horrible LIES.) III) After we were seated, I ordered sparkling water. Our server brought me regular water, with no explanation. Apparently, they don't have sparkling water here, which is fine...just let the customer know! (The server later poured regular water into my girlfriend's cup of Sprite...but hey, easy mistake right?) IT GETS "BETTER"... IV) Our table had a clear view of the "behind the scenes" activity in the restaurant. My girlfriend had just made the comment "I think their whole family is back there" when a small child carrying an even smaller dog walked right out into the dining area. V) The small dog then proceeded to pee on the child and onto the floor. VI) A young woman, presumably the mother, grabbed the dog and the child and rushed them to the back (in clear view of our table) and wiped his hands and the floor with paper towels. VII) Shortly thereafter, the child reemerged and sat down at the sushi bar. I said to my girlfriend "don't look now" just in time for her to watch the child PICK HIS NOSE, EAT HIS BOOGERS, RUN HIS FINGERS THROUGH HIS HAIR, then PLACE THE SAME HAND ONTO THE COUNTER. Stomach officially turned. VIII) The food became a little harder to eat after all that. I should also mention that the food was a "strong" 4 out of 10....Hopefully Rech T. will delve more into that later.... IX) The restaurant's saving grace came towards the end of our meal, when the sushi chef brought to our table two little sushi snowmen with little balls of rice for bodies, and scarves made out of thinly-sliced fish. (See below.) I mean, just look at those little faces made of seaweed. How I could yell "I WISH I COULD GIVE THIS PLACE ZERO STARS!!!!!!!1" at those faces?! NOTE: I understand that this was an isolated incident, and for Kabuki Sushi to average four stars, most people must really like this place. The servers were sweet enough, and it wasn't totally their fault that this series of unfortunate events occurred on the same night. But to allow a couple of the aforementioned events to happen in ANY restaurant EVER is sort of appalling. I could not allow myself to ever dine here again, even if only to give it a second chance. So we've been going here for over a year now..... The staff is great, (not to mention that my son, Jon works there).. So I'm not being Bias because of that... Really, food is yummy! Great portions and Prices are reasonable... Not to mention $1 Sake on Wednesdays and $1 Beers on Thursdays. I don't drink beer but my hubby does, its well worth it.. It does get busy with large groups, so PATIENCE is the word... My favorite at kabuki is the Chirashi..... Super yummy! Their Hamachi is super fresh and is a favorite of ours as well! This place it's really awesome overall. There are a few minor things that aren't stellar, but overall a good place to go if you're looking for good sushi. I've had delivery and also been to the restaurant, and both are pretty good. Sit in service is quick and efficient, and the delivery service is prompt and tasty. Pictures included are from when we went for my birthday. The Hamachi nigiri was amazing, but the house salad had pieces of rotted lettuce in it. My two rolls were good (ninja and Country girl), and the chicken katsu and beef teriyaki were good as well. I've had delivery twice, and one time the Hamachi was amazing, and last time recently, it was really stringy and hard to eat. If you're looking for a sushi fix, it's a great spot, but I've had better in other places around Northern California. Overall 4 stars for food, atmosphere, service, and quality of sushi. I really really enjoyed myself here. I came for dinner knowing there would be all you can eat sushi for $18.95. And. It. Was. Good!!! This place is hidden behind the whack ass Sizzler, it should be up front for all to see. The food was sooo good with big plates and the staff was friendly. AYCE! I absolutely LOVE AYCE sushi. There is a catch, though. You do pay $1 per two pieces of Maki left. (Hide some in your napkin if you must heh). It's $15 for lunch and $20 for dinner. AYCE is best when you have multiple people because you defiantly get more bang for your buck. The sushi itself was immaculate. It was really really good and fresh(and I know my sushi!) they even have a hot cheeto roll. *droll* The server in the beginning was quite rude but fixed her attitude through out our meal. FIVE STARS FOR FOOD AND SERVICE!!!!! This place is AWESOME!!! Steve and the rest of the staff are super friendly and quick on serving. Food was delicious. They actually forgot my spicy scallop hand roll, so they took it off the bill and gave me two hand rolls to go. How sweet!! The tempura Oreo and green tea ice cream was the perfect dessert to end a delicious meal. Thanks!!!! Will be a returning customer. :) The restaurant is under new management and the food, pleasant customer service and ambiance has changed dramatically. I'm glad I came back and tried this place out again. And am excited to return many more times in the near future. The food/sushi definitely trumps all other sushi restaurants around the vicinity. It is also located conveniently off the freeway with many parking spots available. I wanted sushi when I got off work so I decided to go inside & order to go. I haven't been back here in a while, everything was different. Of course, a new owner. I ordered a California roll since that's so basic, no one can really mess up that kinda roll. Fried oysters and miso soup. California roll had a lot of rice. The avocado was really yellow, like a paste. The crab was good though. A few bites was kinda sour? Maybe it was the ginger or something on the side, idk. I've been here a few times. The first time was when my mom moved to Antioch and we had the ayce lunch. I remember it being like $12 and thinking "not a lot of roll options but for $12 that's a good deal". Fast forward to a year later when I move here and revisit this sushi place that I vaguely remember liking and the dinner ayce is nearly $30 and the ayce menu is a much smaller section than I remember. The price for ayce in San Jose is comparable but at least they have a double sided menu of options including nigiri, handrolls, appetizers, and sides in addition to the rolls offered. Long story short, I don't think the ayce is a good deal here and I won't be doing that again. I opted for ordering off the regular menu on my recent visits here. I've tried the spicy tuna handrolls, suomono salad with tako, and the Victoria secret roll. All are really good and it's what I've ordered the last three times I've been here. Is it the best sushi I've ever had? No. Is it the best sushi in Antioch? Probably. I just wish the ayce was as good of a deal as it used to be and had at least a full page of options since that's what sent me here in the first place. I've been here once before and had a good experience with my sister for the all you can eat sushi and sashimi. It was on a Wednesday and during the afternoon. I don't know What happened when we went recently on a Sunday for dinner. I believe if you promote such thing as an "all you can eat sushi" special. The restaurant should have the supply for what can be potentially demanded. My family of 15 came in ordered multiple rolls and sashimi, when our order was given to the servers they didn't tell us later that they're "out of sashimi" which I knew was a lie because they just seen how much we actually wanted and wanted to hold back. Half if not more of the rolls that we ordered was not given, we were given rolls we didn't order, or we had to ask multiple times to get the rolls (still didn't get it) WHY??! BECAUSE THE SUSHI CHEFS WERE TOO BUSY ENTERTAINING THE 7 PEOPLE AT THE SUSHI BAR and not enough by the PARTY OF 15. BY entertaining I mean taking sake shots and drinking bottles of beer RIGHT IN FRONT OF US while we waited for the rolls we never got. AFTER ALL OF THIS the server then said They DID HAVE SASHIMI and WOULDN'T charge us..Okay, fine..they're trying to redeem themselves. HOWEVER they cut us horrible frozen pieces that had a rotten aftertastes that I wouldn't be surprised if I get stomach poisoning soon. I dont think I will be coming here again which is a shame because my first time with just one person we as great. So me being a person who loves sushi I had to come back and give this restaurant another try and to be honest the service was way better then before.I did realize that it's only 1 server doing everything (which is the owners wife) and I feel I could have been a bit more understanding I gave it a 4 for the sole reason of they are hard working people and the food here is delicious especially for being out in Antioch and an AYCE Sushi spot. I'm going to miss this place since I moved to Concord last week :( Their prices aren't expensive and I love how they plate the food, very different from a normal bento box, I like that. Great local spot. Staff has change quite a bit in the last few years. My favorite roll is the Flaming Dragon. After it burns out, it leaves a light smokey flavor on the roll. Be advised, it's not in the AYCE menu. Hot Mamacita roll is another favorite of mine. Nice spicy kick from the finely chopped jalepenos. I'm not sure if they still serve it, but they use to have a chilled cucumber sake. Very good. Service is quick most times and they check on you regularly. read more

I used to think this place was decent quality. But after tonight not so much. My server took a while to get to me, which usually might be normal if it was busy, but there were MAYBE 3-4 other tables. Once I gave my order I got my miso soup and gyoza in decent time. But then he brought me the wrong food. He brought me Sashimi when I ordered the Deluxe Sushi platter. I mentioned it wasn't what i ordered and he walked away! I had to wait until I could get his attention again and insist I get a menu so I can show him that this isn't what i ordered, he insists it's the sushi deluxe and brings over the waitress who was serving like, over half the crowd...so 3/5 tables at this point, less than 8 people. She agrees that it's the sashimi platter and takes it back. So now i'm waiting longer, munching on ginger until they bring my sushi. If you can call it that. Traditional, basic sushi consists of rice, fish and a dab of wasabi. I get this at the sushi place across town, but here it's a meh quality piece of fish and a minuet piece of fish just draped over it. It tasted like something i could improve on by going to 7-11. Also for 12 "deluxe" pieces of sushi. There were only 5 different kinds, how is that deluxe? I also didn't get a refill on my water until i was paying my check. Needless to say I won't be bringing my money back there no matter how sushi starved I am. read more

I just would like to leave a review because this is months of frustration. Almost every time I've tried to order from this restaurant there's been an issue. Whether they've messed up the order, or I've had missing items, or even on DoorDash, where they've just straight up canceled my order for whatever reason. I have never had one good positive experience. In addition, every time I go to call the restaurant, no one picks up the phone, so honestly, I don't know if the line even works. They have great prices and on DoorDash and online their sushi and other food looks amazing! and the food that we have managed to get from them and were able to eat has been good, but never what we wanted so I can't really give it a fair review. It's just frustrating to experience that from a business. I hope other people have had better experiences, but I just wanted to leave my review here in hopes, it might help someone. I believe it was Dickens who once wrote, "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times." Dickens however, never experienced Sushi Kabuki's disrespectful and incompetent wait and cook staff. In regards to my visit here, it was purely THE WORST of times. Where do I begin? Our waitress was clearly not fluent in English, which at first was fine, but later became a huge problem. I ordered sushi combo and requested a substitution to make the meal vegetarian, she nodded and repeated my request at least six times, so I assumed it would be right. I should not have assumed anything. Not only did she bring me a huge plate of sashimi in addition to my avocado and cream cheese roll, she refused to take it away and replace it with the other vegetable roll I had requested. My lunch partner however, got the worst of it. After ordering the all you can eat, she circled a large quantity of rolls she was interested in sampling. Our waitress and the chef then asked her, after about 15 minutes of waiting, to "concentrate on only four" and "then we'll see how much more you can eat." I get it, my friend is a tiny size four, she still wanted all those sushi rolls. After limiting her choices, the woman came back to pick up her menu 10 minutes later, and she didn't get her food for another 15 minutes. We're still here, waiting, as I stare at the sashimi I never ordered and wonder if the vegetables and noodles I was promised are mere myths. Like I said, it was the worst of times. read more

The crew and I dropped by Kabuki for a weekday dinner after work. We ordered a spread of sushi and I had the seafood with black mushroom and bok choi dinner. The sushi rolls were plump and constructed consistently. The fish was fresh and the overall flavor of the sushi was good. The black mushroom dish was delicious. The sauce really hit the flavor spot, unlike our miso soup appetizer. I could have left that one alone. Biggest criticism was the wait staff. I felt like they were trying to push us along and get out. The second a plate looked like it was empty, it was gone. From trying to get an order out of us to trying to see if we needed a box, it felt more like a 30 minute lunch than a nice wind-down dinner. read more

$1 sushi! You can't go wrong with $1 sushi, assuming you don't come away with food poisoning. This was our 3rd visit under the new management and it was another 5 star experience. The waiter explained that all the nigiri, except those listed as seasonal (sweet shrimp, miragai, uni--all of which happen to be my 3 favorites) were $1 a piece all day Mondays & Tuesdays. Your choice of sashimi style (no rice) or sushi style (with rice). I had the tuna, salmon, yellowtail (all sashimi), eel and egg (both sushi) and all were excellent. For $1, I was expecting less than top-rate fish. Like maybe their old leftovers. And I wouldn't have minded that as long as it was still good and didn't make me sick. What I got instead was utterly fabulous, fresh fish. The sashimi pieces were all beautiful. And none of that deceptive slanted cutting, which is where they cut the fish very thin but at a slant to make it look bigger. This was sushi cut and served as it should be. The yellowtail was especially very generously sized. For sushi, I was impressed. For $1 sushi, my mind was blown. They were out of a few items that I wanted--sea urchin, giant clam, and mackerel. But that actually speaks in their favor to me because that means they have a turnover, and the fish isn't just sitting there getting old. Along with my sushi, I was given a sectioned plate of different types of wasabi. This isn't just the regular wasabi they serve with your rolls, but SPECIAL wasabi--2 types. I'm not a wasabi expert but really appreciated that special, unexpected touch. The boyfriend again ordered his I Love You roll, which is like a CA roll with fried shrimp tempura in the center and topped with tuna and unagi sauce. He prefers a Tiger roll, which is identical except topped with shrimp instead of tuna, but they don't serve that here and this was the closest thing. He also ordered their deep fried oyster, which was served with katsu dipping sauce on the side. They oysters were of good size, plump and juicy. Very good. Came with salad and miso soup for each of us. I also couldn't resist an order of sweet shrimp, which at $5 was a steal as this is usually one of the most expensive nigiri. Total including a soda was about $35, an amazing deal considering the quantity and quality of the sushi we got. Usually just my portion of the sushi comes to that. The chef said they use AAA-grade fish, whereas most sushi places use only AA-grade. I don't think I'm expert enough to know the difference, but I know enough to recognize the excellent quality of what we were served. I still can't believe it was only $1! Other items we've tried: Chicken katsu - good! The chicken itself is normally not very flavorful to me and the dish heavily relies on the sauce. I usually find katsu sauce a little overwhelming but not here. Perfect actually! Beef terriyaki - Not generally a fan of japanese beef terriyaki, finding it just ok most of the time, but another winner here! Lion roll - So many reviews raved about it, decided to finally give it a try even though I'm not generally a roll person. This is one of my favorite sushi places in Antioch however the customer service can DEFINITELY use some work. Hence the 3 stars provided. If you order the unlimited sushi it feels like they watch you like a hawk. Also, after ordering, takes them a while to check on you. The sushi is always fresh and delicious so no complaints there! We ordered from them last night for the first time, and by accident. We actually meant to order from Kanpai Sushi in Brentwood. Oops...big mistake. The Cali was decent, but a bit chewy. Maybe they doubled up on the nori so that's forgivable. The other two rolls were fried...and fried HARD! I was expecting a light tempura batter so it's a little crispy. Nope! Hard as a rock and practically inedible. Two thumbs down for sure. Won't order from here again. Next time I'll make sure I order from Kanpai Sushi. read more

The customer service was bad. Honestly, I'm not the type to write reviews or complain at a restaurant, but I think they can definitely work on their attitude. I called to order for pick up, and the lady was rude. I'm always so positive and understanding so I was like whatever, let me just go get my food. I go to pick it up and they have a door set-up station, where you put your card/money in the slots, and they give you your food in there. So I walk up to the door, and she says something over the speaker which caught me by surprise, cus I thought she was going to be at the "window" of the door. I didn't hear what she said. So she repeated what she said passive aggressively. She was sliding the slots fast, for receipt and for me to sign, and didn't even say have a good day, just straight STANKY attitude. I can tell ever since the phone call. I can just tell she has no respect for customers and doesn't understand simple manners. It sucks because these people give a bad rep to the restaurant they work at, which causes me to not recommend it to anyone... because I wouldn't want my friends to get treated badly as well. That's embarrassing to recommend a place where you're not going to feel welcomed, and seem like a bother. So about the food... it was alright. It was kind of bland, could of had more flavor. I live close by Kabuki and decided to go there and try their Tempura. I haven't eaten there in years. Based on reviews they have changed management several times. The Tempura was good, however I've had better. I also ordered chicken teriyaki, it was terrible. The chicken tasted flat, as if they gave just before it spoiled. Absolutely love this place and so thankful it survived the Pandemic. I have never had a problem with quality at Kabuki and am a huge fan of their 2 and 3 roll specials during lunch. We were in the neighborhood and checked them out. Food was good but the sushi guy made our experience there awesome! Tried the green roll, mexican and lion king. They have all you can eat lunch and dinner. We'll be back for sure. One star not given because the tempura shrimp in my roll wasnt crispy, tasted like it had been sitting.
