I visited this restaurant for the first time today with my girlfriend. I'm new to sushi and have only recently started trying it, so I was looking forward to the experience. When we first arrived, the atmosphere was very pleasant. The restaurant was nicely decorated, and they had one of the World Cup games playing, which was nice We were initially greeted by our main server, who took our first order. We ordered an alcoholic beverage along with two things to share: the shrimp tempura roll and the sweet potato tempura. The shrimp tempura roll came out first, and the sweet potato tempura took a little longer, but we had no issue with the wait. Both dishes tasted good, and my girlfriend enjoyed them even more than I did. As someone who's still new to sushi, I thought it was a solid introduction. Unfortunately, the service changed after that. Once we finished our first order, we told our server previously, we wanted to order more. A couple of minutes turned into five, then ten, and he never came back to our table. During that time, we noticed him standing at the bar watching the game, and there was no communication that another server would be taking over. Eventually, we flagged down another server, who took care of us for the rest of our meal. She seemed very busy, especially since several employees, including our original server, appeared to be watching the game instead of attending to guests. My girlfriend and I both work in the restaurant industry, so we understand that things can get hectic and that every place has off days. This review isn't meant to be harsh or unfair--we're usually very understanding. However, the lack of communication and the way the service was handled really stood out and took away from what was otherwise a pleasant dining experience. The food and atmosphere were enjoyable, but the service is what left us disappointed. I hope this was simply an off day because I do think this restaurant has potential, and I'd be willing to give it another chance in the future. read more

Awful experience from the moment I walked in. Unfortunately, neither the server nor the kitchen staff were accommodating. I have a food allergy and politely asked if one ingredient could be left out of my meal. The server responded rather abruptly that the chef does not alter recipes. When I spoke with the manager, I was told the sauce had already been prepared in advance and would not be remade. I understand that many restaurants prepare sauces ahead of time, and I respect that they may not be able to accommodate every request. My disappointment wasn't with the policy--it was with the way it was communicated. The lack of courtesy and empathy made for a very unpleasant dining experience. We got up and left. Had to. I will not be returning, especially when Sushi Yama has the same entree and they treat you like royalty. I'd recommend Sushi Yama over Kabuki in a heartbeat. read more

We've been going to Kabuki and realized I haven't done a review. Had a great dinner at Kabuki this weekend. The atmosphere is modern and relaxed, perfect for enjoying sushi or a nice meal out. The staff was welcoming and attentive from start to finish, and the service was fast without feeling rushed. The sushi was fresh and beautifully presented, and everything we tried tasted great. You can really tell they use quality ingredients. The menu has a nice variety, so there's something for everyone whether you are craving sushi, noodles, or cooked dishes. Yummmmm Sushi & Thai restaurant in Wellington! We were able to get a spot and catch their Happy Hour. They are big on reservations that sit inside, but if you're a walk in you'll have outdoor seating available for you. The food comes out in good timing and the prices are right! We got a delicious assortment from spicy tuna rolls, pan fried dumplings, fried tofu, salmon roll, shrimp roll, kids sushi, egg rolls, crab Rangoons and a Thai iced tea to wash it all down. Everything about my experience at Kabuki was positive. The atmosphere is warm and pleasant. The kabuki masks on the wall near our table created an air of authenticity. Overall, the food is delicious, and the service is good. The restaurant was busy on a Wed evening and I'm glad we had reservations. They have comfortable seating both indoors and outdoors. The selection of sushi & sashimi and rolls seemed endless. After perusing the menu for a while, my friend selected the yellowtail temaki hand rolls and the salmon + avocado traditional rolls. She thoroughly enjoyed every bite along with some wasabi, ginger and soy sauce. I had the Thai fried rice with chicken, to which I added pineapple and raisins. Having seen these items included in the pineapple fried rice dish, I was inspired to add them to mine. Perfect combo of flavors! And the portion size was just right. Stopped by Kabuki Sushi for a late-night bite after catching a movie, and it was exactly what we needed! The service was really good -- our server was super attentive, which is always a plus. We ordered the PB&J Roll and the Dynastic Dragon Roll, and both were absolutely delicious! I also had the wonton soup as an appetizer, and it was a perfect start to the meal. The restaurant itself was very clean and beautifully decorated with a fantastic array of Asian touches that really added to the atmosphere. We came here for my son's birthday and ordered the sushi boat for two. Unfortunately, the quality was disappointing. The boat came out extremely quickly, which already had me questioning how freshly it was prepared. Once we tasted it, several pieces clearly did not taste fresh, and the texture was off. My younger boys had already eaten some of it before I realized. When I brought it to the waitress' attention, they insisted everything was 'fresh' and didn't seem open to listening. I'm really sad and upset. I placed a delivery order and I wanted the lunch special. Online there's no option for soy paper on the lunch special. So knowing this because I order here about 3-4 times a WEEK. I ALWAYS add 2$ for for sushi roll to have soy paper. The delivery app states " add a tip for the restaurant staff" so in my instructions I say " I add two dollars for the soy paper and the extra dollar is for you thank you". I then tip my driver SEPARATELY. APPLE server called me and told me it's a two dollar charge. I explained very nicely what I do for the charge to be covered. She didn't find that acceptable and said that ALL 9$ goes to DOORDASH and not to KABUKI. I said that is not true. I ordered through kabuki.com. Their own website. The website states " tip to the RESTAURANT " so who is wrong here? APPLE continues to over talk me. YELL at me. And when I said fine charge me more then she said she cannot go in the iPad to do so. No manageer is on site according to her. She then LAUGHED at me multiple times on the phone when she upset me. I had a VERY hard day and just wanted my favorite sushi. I pay for my meal and my upcharge HAPPILY every time. Weather I eat IN STORE. TAKEOUT PICKUP. DELVIERY. I MAKE SURE I PAY. I have receipts. I will be bringing this to a manager in person as well to make sure she is taught properly how the tips all work. They had a sign up front that said "short staffed" which at least warns you that service may take a bit but everyone was friendly and looks like everyone was helping each other. I ordered off the "You Pick Two" lunch menu and got Two Sushi rolls (Spicy Tuna & Volcano Rolls) with the miso soup for $12.95. Great price for sushi and the food came out quick. There are certain restaurants that you want to keep for yourself and this is one of them that I have resisted yelping for quite some time. Service has always been cordial and expeditious. The ambiance is understated but elegant. On this night, we went out for early bird but were still promptly seated and although our server, Nat, seemed extremely busy, she was ever present and pleasant. I started with the strawberry mojito and thank goodness they did not skimp on the alcohol, just the right balance of sour and sweet. We next had the Thai spring rolls and krab rangoons followed by the chicken empanadas. The spring rolls and rangoons were crunchy and not oil soaked, hot from the fryer with the delicate accompanying sauce. The chicken empanadas were unlike a Latin American empanada, not unpleasant, just a different take; minced chicken, sweet potato, curry powder, fried in puff pastry and served with a plum sauce. Unfortunately, these were a little oil soaked. We also had the hamachi Kama (grilled yellowtail collar), one of our go-to menu items on each visit. The flavor is clean, mild, delicate, and slightly sweet with a firm texture and goes well with the accompanying ponzu dipping sauce. Finally we had assorted sushi rolls. I ordered the Japanese bagel roll, and the spicy tuna roll. The nigiri sushi (salmon) with rice was the best sushi based thing I had there. The miso soup wasn't bad either. There was flavor in the soup. The angry rock shrimp was pretty decent but I wish it came out warmer and less greasy. Same for the Thai spring roll, it was a bit too oily. The food took a while to come out as well. I went for happy hour and while the prices were great.... the timing wasn't. On average each order took 20 minutes to come out. I've been to a kabuki location on clematis and it was pretty good. I actually enjoyed the happy hour drinks & food, but maybe this location wasn't that great? My cousin and I are creatures of habit. Somehow, some way, every single time we have lunch, we end up eating sushi. This time, obviously, was no different. I was up in her neck of the woods, Wellington, which admittedly I'm not too familiar with despite having lived there for a month. Anyhow, on the hunt for sushi in the area, I bumped into my dear friend Krista C.'s review and that's how we wound up at Kabuki. Have to say that their lunch specials are amazing. They're generous portions at economical prices. You have your choice of picking two sushi rolls for $12.95 or an entree and a roll for $13.95. Did I mention that this comes with your choice of soup or salad? My cousin had eaten beforehand, so consider me flabbergasted when she ate the majority of her meal. She had two shrimp tempura rolls and a miso soup. As for me, I had a shrimp tempura roll, a California roll, and a miso soup. I noticed that depending on the roll, you were served a different number of pieces. Shrimp tempura was five pieces, California roll eight pieces. I mean, it makes sense when you see what ingredients are actually in these rolls. That said, meal was filling regardless of number. As for the miso soup, it could've used a little bit more of salt, but I rather have this issue than for it to be unbearably salty. I was essentially a vacuum cleaner with all the food, only stopping to drink some green tea I had ordered. Portions were heavy in my eyes, but I think that was the case after the green tea settled in. At any rate, it was a good meal. I did admittedly not eat anything for the rest of the day.
