Located in Cady's Alley in vibrant Georgetown and near the river, Kafe Leopold has the perfect setting for a meal. The outdoor courtyard is a lovely dining space when the weather is nice. The interior of the Austrian café is modern and sleek with the floor-to-ceiling windows allowing plenty of light to come in. I came here one night for dinner with my sister and friend. We shared some calamari. My sister had the rostbraten vom angusrind (Angus skirt steak). My friend had the miesmuscheln (mussels). I had the schnitzel. The food was good. However, I never got the potato salad that came with the schnitzel so it was an incomplete meal due to the missing starch component. When I asked our server about it, he said that they had ran out and that he could substitute it with fries instead. It would have been nice to have been told before ordering or getting my food as I would have chosen another entrée instead. I declined the fries as there was enough on the table already from what came with the mussels and steak. For dessert, we shared the Esterhazy, fruit tart, and some macarons. The desserts were beautiful, but they are a tad too sweet for my preference. Kafe Leopold nailed it on the ambiance, but the food and service does not hit the 5-star mark. Their savory food is decent, but you have to have a really sweet tooth for their desserts, especially the Esterhazy. Though our server was super friendly and personable, the service was a little slow and not very proactive. Went for brunch and although the food was pretty good (I had the quiche), the portion sizes were kind of small. The blonde hostess at the front was so zonked out, she did not seem willing to help at all. She barely said hi when we wanted a table, and didn't even want to give us a bigger table to fit 3 people (perhaps some racism there). The waiters and waitresses were wonderful though. read more

Recommended by a friend who used to live in DC, I was a little skeptical after seeing the reviews but because we had a college tour at Georgetown, we thought we'd give it a try. First off, we couldn't find it as our uber driver dropped us off just a little past the small signage they have on the street pointing to the restaurant being on the lower floor of a building so we went around to the back where we finally found it. We came in early from our initial reservation and they seated us quickly in a nice tucked away table. Our server was pleasant and helpful though a little unsure of dietary restrictions (my husband is gluten free). Every single dish we ordered was phenomenal. Steak frites to tea sandwiches to branzino (just a teeny bit dry) to the desserts (passion fruit pavlova was delightful). So much so I want to go back for another meal. I have only come here for desserts. Great date place as well. Tucked away in an alley in Georgetown really gives it a charm and cred points from your date. My two best recommendations are their papilotte and earl grey infused cake. Both consistent and amazing. Service was attentive, but becareful they try to up sell (trick) you mineral water in the beginning by asking if you want sparkling or flat. Thought was flat was tap water. After walking around Georgetown shops, wanted to take a nice break. Swung into this cafe with my sister and had a couple of drinks (which I forgot to take a picture of) and these desserts. The pistachio cake was light and flavorful. I had a sparkling lemonade and asked that it not be too sweet. Went well with my cake slice. My sister had the ice cream and espresso, which was a great pick me in the afternoon and some shopping. It was a bit crowded, but the day was nice to be outdoors for a walk and shopping. This restaurant is in Georgetown (close to Georgetown Cupcakes). You can enter through Cady's Alley (steps or elevator) or through the front entrance. The patio is lovely. We visited on a beautiful day when all the outside tables were full. This place is so popular that they don't take reservations. The inside table was nice. Eight of us sat at a long table near the bar. Our server (and helpers) did a great job at keeping our water glasses full and keeping an eye on our table. The drink menu is larger than the food menu. This is a great place to visit and have conversation. There weren't lots of food choices. It is upscale, pricey brunch. There are great pastry items behind the counter. The chef does a nice job with presentation. The eggs were decent. Some of our group ordered the quiche. Hubby had the waffles. They were slightly tough, but tasty with whipped cream and powdered sugar. The side of potatoes comes with a sauce (I prefer ketchup). The pretty plates add to the presentation but stack up quickly. Our server was great about removing them. The bar is nice. It was great having a "normal" visit with a group of friends. The bathrooms are small, efficient and clean. Parking is a challenge, but is is worth walking a few blocks to have the experience. This is the perfect spot for celebrations or a first date. read more

I dined at Kafe Leopold for brunch. We arrived with a reservation but requested an outdoor table upon arrival (which is first come first serve), which they were thankfully able to accommodate. Both the inside and outside of this restaurant is adorable, but the outdoor courtyard seating really takes the cake and makes you feel as though you are in a European city and not DC. However, it took probably ten minutes before a server came over to us, though he seemed to be aware, asking if we had been waiting long. We ordered drinks and food. The food was delicious, I having the poached eggs on avocado toast. Though, it arrived "deconstructed," which wasn't listed on the menu to my recollection, so I had to assemble the pieces myself, which was a little funny. But it tasted great, so hard to complain. I was brought the wrong drink, and when I questioned the waiter about it, he did have the bar bring me the correct one--though because I had already taken a sip of the original drink and it would have been prudent of him to leave it at the table as well (which he admitted regretfully after the fact). My friend ordered a second cappuccino which took so long to arrive that we eventually had to ask for the check and she took her drink to go. Overall, the waiter was incredibly nice and friendly, even if not attentive. It seemed like they were overburdened. Hopefully they can get more staff or increase communication regarding when new parties are seated. read more

I love this place. It's a perfect cafe in Georgetown to have a snack and chat, or a hidden gem for a unique European styled meal. Most recently I dined for a light business lunch. Their coffee selections are flavorful and elegant. I had a Kaffee mit Schlag (which is a coffee with fresh whipped cream on top) and a savory salmon tart. Their flavors are amazing and the presentation is wonderful. The cafe feels very European and is comfortable. They have ample seating inside and out with heaters outdoors in the event that it gets nippy. Blankets on chairs if you want them. The staff is charming and attentive. But more importantly, they know the menu and provide helpful suggestions. And for this of you who know... they have actual Sachertorte. We sat down and were given menus, ordered coffee which is served European style with a small glass of water to cleanse the palette. I ordered the almond croissant and my SO got an assortment of sandwiches. This was our first visit. We loved it enough to go back the next day and since it was a Saturday, we were able to order from the brunch menu. Ordered the soft scrambled eggs and side of fingerling potatoes. This is my third time at Kate Leopold. We arrived at 1:45pm with a reservation and didn't have to wait. The place was still pretty busy but bar seats were available. Finding parking on a Saturday afternoon in Georgetown is a nightmare. It took us 25-30min to find a spot still pretty far from the place. Make sure to account for time to find parking when you go. I got the Leopoldo Brunch special with melted cheese, mushroom and sausage. Good flavor and decent size. The sausage loses its flavor when it's sliced up and cooked with other things so doesn't taste as good as the Bradwurst entree. Good ambiance so cute spot for dates. Some entree items are a bit overpriced for the amount of food you get. Desserts are mesmerizing but you only get a small bite for $8-9. Overall, decent experience but probably wouldn't come more than once or twice a year. read more

Kafe Leopold is a beautiful place in Georgetown. For the coffee shop vibes and pastries/desserts alone, this place would get a 5, however, I came here for brunch which was not short of its faults. I ordered the schnitzel at a hefty price of $31. 20 minutes in, the server came and told us they were out of the potato salad that came with it, but offered us extra french fries (which we did not get :(). The schnitzel itself would've been good, had there not been so much mustard on the bottom of it. My nostrils were on fire and had that mustard burn. Additionally, that and the side I had ordered were both lukewarm, and it was clear that they had been sitting on the pass for a while. I got the banana split dessert which was excellent. The coconut patta cotta was the perfect touch to it and the caramel sauce was so rich and amazing. 10/10 dessert and would order again. I wanna note the service was good, from the host to our server to the food runner (who honestly was so funny and kept making so many jokes, loveeeeee). Leopold's is always a good idea any time of day. Lovely to sit outside sipping a cappuccino, tableside made Bloody Mary or a glass of wine. My favorite is brunch (typically share a sweet like the caramelized banana waffles and a savory). The kale salad is a favorite for lunch with the cheese platter. There is something for everyone on the menu. The only downside is if you sit at the tables newly placed down the alley, one can be forgotten so allow extra time if you're seated there. Instead of being apologetic or accommodating we were met with anger and a condescending manner that even my young daughter found upsetting. Note to management, perhaps it's time for an employee review, "Nick" seems to be unhappy with his job and is taking it out on your patrons. (p.s. We always love coming here for the excellent savory meals and the Viennese coffee and pastries which remind us of when we lived in Vienna, Austria. It is a very popular place and can get very loud. For us, this is a drawback and so unlike our Vienna experiences. It is hard for us to hear friends at a table of six, so conversation is between pairs adjacent or across from one another. I think the hard flooring and furnishings is one reason, but perhaps also that, in general, it seems Americans speak much louder than Austrians. Next time we will plan to come around 3pm after the boozy brunch crowd leaves. read more

One of my favorite meals EVER. I wasn't expecting much, but the food, dessert, and atmosphere at Kate Leopold made for a lovely and memorable lunch. COVID PRECAUTIONS: They have a cute outdoor patio adorned with giant umbrellas to provide shade. However, the space seemed a bit cramped and tables were less than six feet apart. Since we dined inside, the waitress took our temperatures (A HUGE PLUS!!) before we were seated. All employees were wearing gloves and masks. FOOD: We ordered the watermelon salad with feta cheese, and it was sooo refreshing and delicious on a humid summer day. The watermelon was perfectly sweet, and the feta cheese rounded out the dish with a salty complex flavor. The croque madame was delicious, and its presentation was lovely. The fried eggs sitting atop the sandwich and the bread itself had satisfyingly crispy outer edges. The Dijon mustard provided a much needed tanginess to break up the heaviness of the sandwich. The zucchini pasta was the most surprising dish of our meal. The pasta was cooked PERFECTLY al dente, and each bite exploded with flavor. I was quite pleasantly surprised with brunch! There's a great outdoor patio in a cozy brick alley in Georgetown, pretty tucked away and low traffic. It's pretty busy and the tables can get cramped. Very sizable and creative menu with everything from spaetzle (unfortunately out today) and croque monsieur (excellent really) to an Italian breakfast of sautéed mushrooms, crispy polenta, and two poached eggs which was very tasty (though I could have gone without the pink peppercorns on top).
