My friend loved her dessert, but I wasn't too impressed with the fresh-squeezed lemonade I got. The lemons must have come from Sourville, because not even halfway through, and my lips started to shrivel and hurt from the acid. The taste was so bitter! Also, fresh is good; seeds left in the drink that are small enough to go up your straw? Not good. I kept having to spit them out onto a napkin - good thing this wasn't a date! Loved this little cafe spot on M street! I had never been here but the service was great and food delicious. We sat outside and the umbrella cover was perfect for keeping us cool in the shade (Late June around 11am) The coffee was very good (and I drink it black) my dining partner had the cappuccino and stated it was well made. I ordered the Emperor's pancake (another name to it) with currants and plum compote. To die for!! Looking forward to dining there again. read more

We've been coming to Kafe Leopold for years and have always loved it. The cuisine is Austrian, with a number of other European selections. It is always fresh, always creative and very good. Their pastries are outstanding--the real deal. The ambiance of their outdoor patio is great, in a quiet cobblestone alley in Georgetown. The patio has a beautiful fountain in the center. The feel is distinctly European. The one complaint I would make is that it is so frustrating to see how much is wasted. Whereas most restaurants today are mindful of this and are taking steps to limit excess waste, Kafe Leopold seems stuck in their ways, with unwanted bread on the table, unrequested napkins with every course and extra cups of hot water and milk with every cup of coffee. Apparently, all of the wasted food goes in the trash, as they are not partnered with a food kitchen to donate their excess food at the end of the day. What a waste! What a shame! read more

I recently traveled to DC with a friend who insisted that we had to stop at Leopold's, the best place to eat in Georgetown. Perhaps she built up my expectations too much, because while the atmosphere in the courtyard was pleasant, the food was not impressive and the service was most definitely sub par. I love mushrooms, and the mushroom tart looked wonderful in the display case, so I ordered it. I was disappointed to find that both the mushrooms and shell were very bland and a bit on the dry side, and as hungry as I was, I put my fork down after a few bites. The pomme frites, which my friend raved about, were unmentionable at best. The apfelstrudel was fine and came in a generous portion, but it was nothing to write home about. I probably could have had comparable fries and dessert at Applebee's, if not Denny's. My friend had a variety of tea sandwiches, but I did not try them as they appeared to be heavy on the mayonnaise. She did share a bite of her raspberry tart with me, and I found that to be surprisingly good, moist with a strong, but not overbearing flavor. The tea cookies were similarly good, which, along with an extra raspberry tart, we took home with us for our husbands. I took a sip of her hot chocolate, which, again, was good, but nothing that I could not have gotten at Starbucks. My other friend gave me a bite of his tomato and mozzarella sandwich, which was delicious and made me regretful that I had not ordered that instead. The service during all of this was as I mentioned sub par. I do not believe (or at least, I do not hope) that our waiter did this to earn a living. We waited quite some time to have our drink order taken, as well as our food order and to have our check delivered to our table. The waiter came back to our table several times to clarify our order, and even then, when our food came out, some of my friend's food was on the other friend's plate and she had to reach across the table to retrieve it. If we had been dining at a lesser establishment, this would not be a big deal, but when we are paying above average prices for below average food, I at least expect it to come out on the proper plate. Overall, the atmosphere was wonderful, but the service was horrible. The presentation of the food is impressive, but in general seems to be an attempt to disguise the mediocre flavor of the food. I'm not very familiar with the restaurants in Georgetown, but I'm confident that there are places that would provide you with a better experience for less than the $35 per person that we spent there. read more

This place is Soooooo European and the prices too! On a nice day this is one of the cutest places in Georgetown to sit. It is off of M street in an alley way with steps leading to the alley. Its definitely cute and the desserts are amazing. The food options are not very extensive but I would definitely give this place a try. read more

This place gets 4 stars. This is probably one of my fav places to visit whenever i am in georgetown, whats there to say that others haven't. I like austrian food so the first time i had their schnitzel, and loved it, the veal medallion was fried just right. And today i had the bratwurst, my least favorite thing on that plate was the sauerkraut, wasnt sour enough for my taste. the portions were spot on, they dont try to feed you for 3 meals or starve you, although some of the stuff they have is rather petite, and this place isnt exactly cheap (for a college student). but the atmosphere is excellent and everything is pretty cute. The wait staff is a little unattentive, which is what caused them a star. but this place is excellent for brunch, lunch, or just sit and chat. read more

Overall: Good food, nice atmosphere, friendly but terrible service. Prices on the high side but still do-able once in awhile ($ 7+ for a slice of cake). You may want to go there when it's not too busy or be prepared to deal with the hassle. I don't think I'll go back - but you may have a better experience. Good: Interesting and authentic ideas, tasty dishes, friendly waitress, prices on par with the neighborhood. I also liked its non touristy vibe. Bad: My goodness, the service could not have been worse. I think I am pretty generous to give the place three stars. The wait was long, the hostess appeared that she could not have been bothered with (why do we need you to come here?). Our table waitress was very friendly, but clearly taking care of too many tables to remember what's going on with us. The orders were wrong twice, the coffee did not come. Then, in the middle of the meal - the FIRE ALARM went off - and the cafe did not know how to turn it off. Ten minutes later, some customers inquired about turning it off and one of the staff said: " we are looking into it, we don't know how to turn it off." A little more on the pricey side, but the desserts were so diverse and creative and simply delicious. When I went for a friend's birthday dinner though, we had terrible service. It took forever to get our dessert menu, even longer to get our checks, and on top of that our waiter charged us for drinks that we didn't order and had to change the check twice. The wait was unbearably long and at the end, we were all pretty annoyed. Overall, a wonderful dessert place, but I think we got unlucky with the service here the day we went. My friends and I came for brunch and give this place a 3.5 mainly for the service. The host who sat us was not friendly, and our waitress took a long time to come get our orders, even though the place wasn't busy. Two of us got the eggs, toast, and ham. This was pretty basic, but yummy (my ham was a little cold). Our other friend got the waffles, which he enjoyed. Kafe Leopold has a calm, clean atmosphere, but was a little overpriced. My husband and me are vegetarians. Which means our options get limited quite often. However, it is not as hard to find good vegetarian food. We happily strolled in on a Saturday afternoon hoping to have a nice lovely brunch in the absolutely gorgeous day DC had been bestowed upon. Little did we know or realize that this place will be packed on a day like this. We had a 50 minute waiting. Suffice to say, it was worth it! They have decent options for vegetarians. I like my scrambled eggs a little runny hence I might be biased in my opinion. However, the olive tart my husband ordered was simple yet delicious. It was the perfect lunch we could have asked for. The herb fried were good. However the show stopper was the almond croissant. That was just perfection. Crunchy and chewy and beautifully flavored with those roasted almost flakes on top was absolute perfection. The creme brulee was quite good. I especially loved the sugary fire crusted top. I have never seen such a crust and I loved that innovative touch. We are in love with this place and definitely plan to return, very soon! read more

During the summer, the outdoor patio is wonderful. Tucked away in a narrow alley, away from the typical Georgetown crowd. Service not bad. Bratwurst was excellent! I would come back any time. HOWEVER. They allow smoking in the outdoor area. This is absolutely not cool. It is not as if they have designated tables for smokers. On the menu it says no cigars or pipes. To non smokers, there is no difference. Cigarette still smells awful. I will go again once the no smoking policy is in effect. read more
