Extremely adorable, darling, and quaint cafe...sorry...kafe to enjoy a romantic and cute brunch. Very bright, white and pastel colored ambiance, small tables, almost felt like the ultimate place to have a tea party. There is a giant counter full of delicious sweets, I'm talking macaroons, napoleons, brownies, the temptation was beyondddddddd real. We started with the blood orange mimosas which were fabulous. I felt a little tingly after two, but definitely could have still safely driven a tractor trailer after ADD MORE BOOZEEEEEEE. (Omg...I'm such a New Yorker...horrifying. This is why no one likes NY.) I ordered the lemon souffle pancakes which were heavenly! Light, crisp, lemony-taste, but the pancakes were heavy and filling. A blueberry glaze came served over the pancakes and complimented the flavor perfectly. I also ordered a side of apple sausage which was excellent and addicting, full of flavor! My boyfriend got waffles and chocolate syrup with a side of fruit which was pretty good, fruit was definitely very fresh. Waffles tasted like a waffle should. I never go crazy for waffles, all taste the same to me. Service was excellent. I'm really surprised to see such low ratings here. Love Kafe Leopold - and not just for its food but the perfect location as well. Tucked away in a cobbled alley of Georgetown, this is a famous brunch spot for G-town goers and tourists alike. I usually always go for the lemon ricotta pancakes - Nomz! Sooo good! You have to get it for brunch. The scrambled eggs over toast is also really delish. Such a simple dish but so yum - the eggs, so soft and mingling with cheese and grape tomatoes over soft toast - double Nomz! Their fries sprinkled with salt and parsley are fresh and crispy. And you can't miss a good cup of cappuccino, obviously! I'm not quite sure why this place has high grades - maybe their staff and their friends write here to bring ratings up. Maybe, maybe not. I stepped in here expecting some great desserts and coffee. After all, this place had 4 stars with 180+ reviews. That's great numbers. Not to me. $7.50 for a slice of cake. That's not acceptable in any country. I don't care if you include 'German' in front of cheesecake, it doesn't make $3 more expensive than American one. I'm just saying... I didn't have great service either. It wasn't overly crowded either, so I should expect some decent service but it was bare minimum. Another reason to lower my rating. The Austrian coffee - I don't know what to tell. It just tasted like regular coffee. Now, I'm not a coffee fan but that don't mean I'm dumb when it comes to coffee either. I know what I'm drinking and it didn't have any unique boldness or flavor to my neighborhood's Dunkin Donuts. Oh, and it's $1.79 there. I don't know about you, but I found this place very overpriced and overrated. I didn't have entree. Maybe they're great and this place does deserve 4-star rating. We went for brunch/lunch today, and the line was about 10 minutes for our party of three. We ordered the salmon hash, the vegetarian quiche, and the truffled grits with serrano ham and eggs. My quiche was a very decent size, accompanied with a green salad; overall it was average. I didn't taste the salmon or the ham, but the truffled grits were really good. The other two dishes were very small, though, just FYI. To be honest, I think they were way overpriced - $15 - and my female friend remarked that she could have eaten three servings. Granted, we're all very athletic and active women, but yeah, 15 bucks for some salmon, two eggs, and hash browns was a bit steep. However, we also got three desserts - the flourless cake, dulce de leche beignets, and I got the praline mousse. My fav was the flourless cake, which was baked in a cup, rich, dark, and topped with a mocha ice cream. I wasn't a huge fan of the beignets - I thought they were a bit dry and dense, though I thought it was creative that they were stuffed and served in a take-out box. The praline mousse was smooth, but it wasn't as rich as I thought it would be. I def think Leopold's is a place to go for coffee and dessert and they have great out door seating. Sunday night I had a date with destiny as the quoted wait time was agreeable with our party of three. The Hostess Station: It was an awkward wait to be acknowledged at the hostess stand. We patiently waited for them to finish their private conversation regarding a problematic customer issue before we could put our name on the wait list. There seemed to be poor communication between the three hostesses and we seemed to get inconsistent information on when we'd be seated. The waitress: The waitress was very polite and congenial. We inquired about a special drink and she directed us towards a refreshing cucumber lemonade. We inquired about the ingredients and she wasn't sure what was in it. When she returned to take our food order, I had to inquire again about the type of alcohol in the drink. Later we asked how the cucumber flavoring was incorporated into the drink, but we never got an answer. Despite the aforementioned, she was very sweet and all is forgiven. (but if you recommend a drink it's good to know what's in it.) The Cucumber Lemonade: Refreshing. I know that there was vodka and champagne, but was it cucumber vodka? With a little web investigation, Effen brand vodka does carry a vodka flavored product. The drink was refreshing but it didn't taste like real cucumber, which is why I inquired. The alcohol was potent and we didn't need a second round. It did come with a real cucumber that attracted a nearby and persistent fly. One of my dinner companions found a hair in her drink, but she was a soldier and finished it without complaint. Dinner: Dinner was good. I had the trio tea sandwiches, or Belegte Brote, and I was happy with the salmon, apple/gruyere and I can't remember the third. My dinner companions enjoyed their Croque Monsieur and the Räucher- fischplatte and we all finished our plates. The prices were a little high and I didn't feel that the quantity, or even the quality, justified the charge. Verdict: It was okay. Maybe they do brunch better? What a terrible experience!! After a year of quarantine like lifestyle to end up in that cafe for breakfast. The Austrian coffee tasted like 7/Eleven. About a 3.5: my husband and I came here to have some brunch - we were really excited to try this place out as we saw this place a couple of years ago when we walked around the Georgetown area. The place itself is located off of Cady's Alley, and the interior of the restaurant was very bright, cheery, and modern-like with their slick white chairs and tables, orange circular cushions, and cool artwork. For our entrees, I ordered the Emperor's Pancakes (the Kaiserschmarrn mit Zwetschegen-roster, which were scrambled souffle with plum-compote and currants); this was an interesting dish as there were big chunks of 'souflee' with a cup of the plum compote that was a jelly-consistency and very tart - I just wished there was some type of syrup as the souffle chunks were very moist, but bland at the same time. My husband had the Belgische Zuckerwaffeln (Belgian sugar waffle with your choice of whipped cream, honey, syrup, or chocolate - he had the whipped cream and syrup); I was a fan of this dish (we actually ended up switching!) as the waffle were wonderfully-made with its crispy exterior and a moist interior; it had a single slice of a fried banana on each section of the waffle with a side of syrup and whipped cream - the taste was not overly sweet but it was literally one of the best waffles I've had in a while! Very tasty! As sides, my husband had the Butterkipferl (a butter croissant, which was very rotund and flaky), I had the Schinken und Kase Scone (ham and cheese scone, which was slightly bland, but I liked the mixture of the subtle cubed ham and cheese throughout; better with a butters pread), and we shared the mini Chicken Salad croissants by the bakery casing (these were our absolute favorites for the day as the chicken salad wasn't too thick, but very light, and there was a good ratio of the chicken chunks and the fruits that were used - it was nestled in these mini croissants that were oh-so-cute and the taste was quite delightful! We started off with 1, but we ordered 2 more - I could have eaten these all day!). For our beverages, my husband had the hot chocolate (it was more on the lukewarm side and watery), and I had the Holunderblutensaft (Elderflower syrup with club soda; I was excited for this drink since I've had this before back in Chicago; very refreshing!). This is one of my favorite restaurants in DC. I first came across this cafe in 2006 when my sister came to visit me at Georgetown. We both fell in love with the food - especially the desserts! I only take very special people to this restaurant and it holds a very dear place in my heart. I usually order the Leopold's Schnitzel (Veal schnitzel, Arugula, potato salad served with choice of mustard or lingonberries) or Rostbraten vom Angusrind (Marinated Black Angus hangar steak, onion marmalade, parsley garlic butter, herb frites). Both are highly recommended. The steak entree is probably one of my favorite dishes to eat in DC. I love the parsley garlic butter on the steak, and it is served with an ample amount of frites. Also, no visit to Kafe Leopold is complete without dessert! We shared the Opera cake, which is almond cake layered with coffee butter cream and chocolate ganache. Be warned that the desserts are a bit pricey (a small slice of Opera cake costs $7.25), but it's worth it! read more

They have a display of goodies (croissants, cakes, pastries, etc.) at the bar that are pretty hard to resist. I suggest the almond croissant (of course). For their savory foods, I tried the Croque Madame, which is a grilled ham and cheese with béchamel sauce and (best part) two over-easy eggs! I also got a side of fries, because I could eat those at any point of the day. They were thin and fried to perfection! Overall, good Austrian food, but not sure if I would wait any longer than 15 minutes for a seat. I think that the big hit here is the patio :) So much fun to sit outside... great atmosphere. As for the inside area... I'm not sure I would like to sit there. When I was there the inside was almost empty and looked quite boring. But maybe I'm wrong - haven't tried that. I went there only for a drink, but then, as always... order some snacks. So the watermelon-feta salad was really good and very interesting. I liked the combination of watermelon and olive oil. Next summer I will definitely try it at home as well. I'm less a sweets fan, but their beignets were also good. It took awhile for us to be seated, even though there were available tables. Our waitress had an attitude and never refilled water, just left us the check like we weren't good enough to sit there. The salads - kale salad and butternut squash salads tasted good. Although they toss the salad with cheese and dressing - I didn't catch that as I usually order those things on the sides The egg salad sandwich bread was dry. I came here with a group of friends for brunch and would definitely return. I got the Leopold Poached Eggs and Avocado toast. It came unassembled though and I definitely prefer to have my food put together before I eat it partly because I'm immensely lazy and partly because I can't nail seasoning as well as the chef can (this came with salt and red pepper flakes). It was a super pretty presentation though and on theme with the restaurant. My only complaint is that the poached eggs were completely well done--the yolks were completely solid. Thanks DC Yelpers! I searched brunch in the DC area and Kafe Leopold came up near the top of the list. Sunday brunch rolled around and it was a short walk from our hotel to the alley where the Kafe was and it was a very busy-a good sign but we were kind of on the clock so I went to check the wait. 30 minutes for two, not too shabby and the hostess suggested we could wait at the lounge (see that review later.) The wait wasn't too long, twenty minutes and we were seated right near the fountain outside. There isn't a lot of space there and my seat was on a base for their umbrella stand. I had to put my chair around the little table. Our waitress appeared and since we weren't ready she gave us time to decide-we ended up waiting a little longer than usual for her to come back but it gave me time to look up the highlights. Lemon tart pancakes was a definite check. We also got the Black and blue scramble and since we're meat and carb addicts got a side of breakfast potatoes and cheddarwurst. The food came and I ended up with the lemon pancakes-now I'm not usually a sweets for breakfast person. I had a bite of it and it was amazingly good, tart-not too tart lemon-y but not overpoweringly so. I mean, you could tell that it was natural lemon and not some fake lemon flavoring. The almonds and apple topping really complimented the light, tart/sweet cakes. I actually was a little hesitant to switch plates, it was so good. The B and B scramble though was a little on the weak side-a lot of tomatoes and mushrooms but the cheese wasn't as hearty as I would have liked. Fortunately, the cheddarwurst gave it that meaty, salty boost that I was looking for. For a German place I'm surprised that some meat wasn't mixed into the scramble. The food is good overall, but the packed seating, the lack of heartier brunch fare and slow service makes it good, but not great. read more

First time here and in Georgetown in General. Beautiful place. Very cozy. It has a super cute outside sitting area with a nice fountain. It's literally on an alley. Caddys alley. It's sorrounded by small shops. It's perfect. I got the lemon soufflé pancakes which were oh so delicious!!!!!! Along with the breakfast potatoes. One side is big enough for two people. My husband got the peach and mascarpone crepes and he said they were amazing. The place has a small little bakery inside where they offer macaroons and other things. The reason why I'm giving it 4 and not 5 stars is because our waitress was a little bit antisocial. Didn't speak much. Later next to us, another employee, a man, accused her of removing place settings from a table and not in a very nice way. But I mean they were right next to us. I didn't like that at all. Oh God, I've read about this place on Yelp, and decided to give it a try for my first meal after being vegan for lent. I was so excited, it wasn't even funny. My friend and I arrived around 11.45AM on Easter Sunday, and the place was packed. However, since we didn't care where we were seated, it didn't take them long to find us a table. The cafe is really cute with plenty of light, the service was nice and never really slow to the point that you'd want to yell at someone. My friend ordered the croque madame and fell in love :), and I ordered the Kaesespaetzele, which is the German version of Mac and cheese with onions. Having lived in Germany for a while and eaten that dish there, I had high expectations! And while the dish didn't look exactly as it would in Germany, it tasted sooo soo good!! Ah, the melted cheese over the housemade pasta. YUMMMMM! We got the macarons for dessert, but they were just ok; I mean I've had better ones elsewhere. Had some grounds in it. Served with a yummy hazelnut milk chocolate square that tastes of Nutella :) -Assorted pastries w/ jam (pictured): So glad we ordered this! It's a great assortment of croissants, something with Nutella inside, cinnamon raisin bun like thing, madeleine. Ours came with strawberry jam. You honestly don't need it since the pastries are good on their own, but I especially loved using it on the croissant. Everything was perfection and oh so flaky! -Tea Sandwiches (pictured): We ordered a tomato & mozzarella, gruyere & caramelized onions, cucumber & smoked salmon. I personally liked the first 2 more. You can't go wrong with a caprese tomato and fresh mozzarella. The gruyere and caramelized onions were earthy flavors. The smoke salmon had an unpleasant fishy taste to it, I didn't bother finishing that one. The service. Alright..this may be a vent session here. So we got there and had to put our names on a list and we're told the wait was about 20 minutes. No problem with us, so we sat right next to check-in table and watched 2 groups of people be seated first that weren't added to the list. I know I'm not going crazy since the girl next to me had the same bewildered look. Luckily, we were seated shortly after this. Then we met our server. So I don't know what this guy's deal was but he was very condescending. Not sure if he was like that since my sis and I look really young and he might have made assumptions on how we'd pay - no excuse for him! I ordered coffee and he forgot to give me creamer. Had to ask for it myself. He also confused our tea sandwich order by giving us a cucumber salad vs. a egg salad. If it wasn't for the fantastic food, this place would be getting less stars. A glorious dessert place tucked in a courtyard/alley near the Canal. The menu looked tasty but we came here for my "birthday cake". This was interpreted as the Papillotte: a chocolate sculpture with meringue and almond hazelnut mousee. The quality of the chocolate and artistic prowess of the pastry chef blended effortlessly. My cocktail was just okay, I preferred the virgin lemonade while basking in the sun. The fun modern decor was a pleasant surprise, DC is a very preppy, faux New England town. We ordered a Bloody Mary and a specialty mojito and this is where the place lost a star. The drinks were good but not mind-blowing for the $9 and $12 price tags -- and the Bloody Mary was very small. Even for DC, I felt a little jipped on the size for what we paid. The food was excellent, though. We got the lemon soufflé pancakes and the salmon hash. Both were good portions and very creative. I really love Georgetown so how fitting it is to have this extremely chic and modern brunch spot tucked away here in the alley. My best friends came to visit so the 4 of us came here to have a nice & relaxing brunch before we went canoeing. We were all very happy with our dishes and the portions were decent! There is an outdoor seating area, but at the time we arrived, a huge garbage truck was going through the alley which made it very noisy and smelly. Therefore, we opted to sit inside. However, once the truck passed, the whole atmosphere is very modern, clean and classy. I would totally recommend this place. LOVE Kafe Leopold. Came here for brunch and we were seated in a trendy area with big green couches and sturdy euro-style tables. Already excited by my meal because a place this pretty probably serves up some awesome food and pretty plates, right? I ordered eggs with grits and truffle oil, with a latte. OMGosh, it was so good. I rarely order grits in a restaurant (I was debating over good ol' bacon and eggs but decided to be daring and order grits instead) and I was SO glad, as my plate was the envy of everyone's at the table. So flavorful and delicious, the truffle oil turned this southern staple into a classy and delicate meal. My friend and I went to Kafe Leopold at about 2:30pm and we were able to get a table without issue. However, by 3pm the restaurant was busy again so I assume there is a "sweet spot" of about an hour to dine without a wait on a Saturday. The draw for this establishment is its modern decor, brunch, and delicious desserts. I tried the salmon tea cake and chicken salad tea cake, wilted spinach and the roasted potatoes with paprika. The salmon tea cake was by far my favorite dish. The salmon paired well with the cumbers, capers, and spread. The wilted spinach tasted a little too tart for me and the potatoes were hit or miss. Some were well cooked and others did not have the crisp texture normally associated with a roasted potato dish. My favorite dish was the Karamell-Grey cake. Its texture was light and airy and was a dark chocolate cake with caramel chocolate ganache. I would probably rate the food alone between a three and half and four stars, however, the service was poor so I felt I had to stick with a three. Since I had never been to the establishment before I entered and was looking for the host. This gentleman at the door asked the women before me if she'd like a table and was about to leave without asking me. I took it upon myself to ask him about the seating and he said something to the effect of "oh you want seating here too?" Rather than seat me pointed me to the hostess in the middle of the room. Normally that wouldn't bother me, but it seemed to be the start of a systemic problem with the service. Upon being seated, I noticed there were still crumbs on the table from previous diners. While the ordering was rather quick, the server was not efficient. They had the two tables next to me and those couples were waiting about 15-20 min to order another dish upon initial service and about another 20 min to pay after clearly being finished with their meal (empty plates). The same problem occurred for my friend and I. We were clearly done with our meal and could not locate the server. While this was not the case for the other two groups dining next to us, it turned out that our server either went on break or left for the day because some one else placed the bill on our table after the delay. Normally, the server notifies you of this change so that you can know who to order and request the bill from. The bill became another issue when we told the server that we wanted separate checks. I know at times this can be difficult, but we even circled the items and asked if it would be ok. We placed both credit cards in the holder, but noticed that only my card was run for both items. The salads were actually lovely. The fries, delicious. And the drinks ... oh, the drinks. And not just alcoholic, they had much more to offer, which I really appreciate as someone who takes a break from drinking from time to time. And the atmosphere is great - tucked away in Georgetown, I'd say the atmosphere is perfect for a jovial group of friends moreso than an intimate date. One of my favorite brunch spots in DC. Kafe Leopold is tucked away from the madness that is Georgetown and presents an extensive menu that works for everyone and that keeps to European dining style. Everything at Kafe Leopold's is served a la carte. The cuisine has an Austrian focus, although the pastry chef here is French (so they have macarons here!). I love their melange (single shot espresso with foam and cocoa powder), which comes with a hazelnut milk chocolate square. Very good and not too sweet or bitter. For food, I've had their croque monsieur, which is a French style grilled ham and cheese with bechamel sauce and frisee salad, and their lemon souffle pancakes. The lemon flavor is strong but not overpowering. Very moist pancakes. Kafe Leopold has an extensive menu of breakfast items, entrees, salads, and desserts. They also have a great selection of coffees, teas, and other drinks. The inside of this restaurant is very sleek and stylish modern European. Service is great and the atmosphere is very calm and collected in the otherwise crazed shopping and overhyped restaurants of Georgetown. read more

I was recently in Georgetown for the first time. I absolutely loved it. While there, we stopped in for lunch at this great little cafe. First of all, the server was fantastic. Incredibly friendly. We shared the Beet Salad and the Bolognese. Both were absolutely delicious. I look forward to the next time I'm in the area to visit Kafe Leopold again. read more

Very cute place for brunch in Georgetown! Loved that there's outside seating, but it was way too hot for that this time around. We waited about 20 mins to get seated on a saturday around 1, and the staff here is awesome! The drinks were also amazing! Try the strawberry mojito and the blueberry rum. For my entree I had the truffled grits.... OHMYGOD! I never knew I could love grits this much... the truffle was perfect with the grits, as well as the egg and prosciutto. Had the blueberry olive oil and the banana rum macaron. Not my favorites here... I suggest trying the pretty looking desserts. read more

Leopold's is a quaint hidden gem. It's hard to find at first, but if you know your way around Georgetown, you'll be fine. Elegant, romantic, and cozy at the same time. Perfect for date night, birthdays, and brunch. They have a bar, unique dinner tables, and a beautiful outdoor patio to choose from. Came here for dinner this past Saturday with a group of seven. Couple of cocktails, apps, entrees, and desserts. All were very tasty and food came out quickly given the time/day. Their menu reflects Austrian-fusion -with a hint of European- dishes and their desserts are out of this world! All in all, great first impression although I'm intrigued to visit again to see if it is as good as my first :) read more

Came here for lunch while exploring Georgetown and LOVED it! You'll see a sign that says "Cady's Alley" so it is somewhat easy to miss from the street unless you're really keeping an eye out. You walk into the alley and there are stairs that lead you to the cutest lil' cafe with lots of outdoor tables in seclusion. It's sooooooo cute! It was a bright sunny day so it made the atmosphere even better. The interior is hip, chic, and modern. There's a full bar and a flat LCD TV on the side wall. It was a hot day so my friend and I opted for lighter fare. They provide you with a bread basket, but for some reason they forgot to give it to us so we had to request it. It's free. They offer a trio of tea sandwiches ($10.95) - which are mini sandwiches and you can choose 3 from a selection of about 8. We got the chicken salad one, a smoked salmon one, and an apple and goat cheese one. All were delicious! Perfectly portioned to tease your tastebuds. We each got a salad to go along with those sandwiches - I got the tuna niciose ($13) and my friend got an herb salad with grilled chicken ($15). Both were good! The tomatoes in my tuna nicoise were some of the best I've had. The chicken on my friend's salad was incredibly tender and they gave a lot of it. We finished off our meal with cappuchinos because we saw everyone around us do that, hehee. Great coffee here, just try it! Wish we had room for dessert because they all looked so decadent, but we overate as usual and had no room left in our poor bellies. Oooh don't forget to check out the bathrooms! I love coming here for brunch for the outdoor seating. The scrambled souffle with plum-compote currants is probably the best thing you could ever order here. The omelettes are also really good here. If you come here for dinner, definitely get the black angus skirt steak. It's a sizeable serving and is so delicious. Service is fast, but you can't make a reservation here so come here early for brunch or else be prepared to wait. Kafe Leopold's is a little pricey for me, but it's always consistently good food. Desserts are beautifully presented and tasty as well. Get the Napoleon! read more

What a lovely find! I went here today with my cousin visiting from Cali, and we were not disappointed with our choice :) Thanks to other Yelpers for suggesting! I loved their outdoor seating, complete with a water fountain and fresh-growing flowers all around - it gave a very classy, bistro vibe. Our waitress was also very helpful and accommodating, so 5 stars for service. My cousin decided to order an assortment basket of their freshly baked pastries to start. This was by far our best move and will probably be what I remember most from this restaurant. The basket included a chocolate croissant, an almond croissant, a regular croissant, a madeleine, and a glazed raisin roll of some sort. We tried little bits of each and nothing fell short of heavenly. When I come back I will definitely explore more of their dessert and pastry menu because everything sounds amazing! I ordered the Croque Madame and loved it. It was a little strong on the mustard, but a delicious mustard, I may add! The over-easy eggs on top were cooked perfectly, and the small salad that accompanied the sandwich was very refreshing. The French cornichons on top were a huge plus for me as well! My cousin decided on a trio of the tea sandwiches, which were good, but not outstanding. She picked the apple and brie, the egg salad, and the Gruyere and onion. The herb frites were also just okay. Overall, I really enjoyed dining here. Their strong suit is definitely their pastries, I would not hesitate coming back for those! And if you're going to go for a sandwich go for the Croque Madame. read more

The perfect dessert after a pleasant evening. Desserts: 5 Assorted Macaroons ($5.50). A You can't beat this deal. My favorite flavors were the Lavender/Blueberry, Lemon Basil, and Banana Rum. Hazelnut Cake ($7.50). A Deliciously dense cake with texture like carrot. Perfectly layered and satisfying. I know their brunch is raved about, so I definitely will have to come check it back out. The cakes are definitely overpriced which is the only reason this doesn't get 5 stars. read more

Leopold's Cafe looks modern and chic with its white tables and seats, however, I noticed the bad seating arrangements when I was browsing the delectable deserts. The only passage through the restaurant was the path right in front of the display case. The couple of minutes that I spend to pick out my desert, I got at least 10 "excuse me" from different waiters and patrons. This was extremely annoying and couple with the fact that most of the servers were cold and unwelcoming, left me with the feeling that maybe I should have dressed up for a cafe? Now onto the desserts. I liked my macaroons. I got pistachio and chocolate and of the two, I liked the pistachio more. However, I have never had a French macaroon before this, so I have no way of comparing. I also got something called esterhazy. Five layers of hazelnut cake filled with a light buttercream and toasted almonds. At $7.00 per slice, I was not impressed. I couldn't taste the layers and the almond flavor seemed artificial. I am willing to give this place another try before I scratch it off my togo list. read more
