Had a great Sunday brunch yesterday! We came around 10:45am after kayaking and got seated outside immediately next to the fountain, which was nice. The waiter was great but busy. Loved the Austrian coffee with whipped cream and my lemon pancakes were fluffy and delicious! I was hungry so it felt like the food took a little longer to arrive than otherwise, but patience is a virtue. Only (small) downside was the amount of umbrellas outside for a very sunny day. There weren't enough table umbrellas and I was the sole person left completely in the sun. The inside was very cool and would've been fine to sit in. I'm sitting here waiting for the check, and I felt compelled to write this. This experience was subpar. That's the easiest way to say it. We waited about 20 minutes on a Sunday for brunch, which wasn't terrible. The place is cute, but that's its most redeeming quality. I ordered the $17 salmon omelette that had little bits of salmon in it and overcooked egg as its foundation. The proportions were weird and it was probably the most lackluster omelette I've ever had -- and that's saying something. Omelettes aren't hard to make, and for $17, I expect at least a decent one. The waiter was nice but forgot the milk we ordered with the coffee and rarely refilled drinks unless specifically asked, so the service was below average. Not worth the price. read more

Came here for a little dessert and coffee with the boyfriend. It was a really nice day out walking around in Georgetown and we both had a huge sweet tooth craving and Kafe Leopold delivered. When we showed up the patio was a little crowded so we decided to sit inside so I could look at all the cakes and pastries they had to offer. We were seated instantly and greeted right away by the server. We both started with a coffee, cafe mocha latte to be exact. It was rich and creamy with chocolate but not overwhelming and we could still taste the coffee. Since I couldn't decide on what pastry I wanted, because I wanted all of them, we ordered the Petite Fours. 5 little pastries of different variety enough to share with two people. I loved all of them but my favorite was the strawberry pastry and mini key lime pie. My dessert experience here was amazing. I would gladly come back again to try more of the cakes and try their food menu along with their brunch they provide over the weekend. Well, the setting is delightful: sun filled courtyard with fountain playing...a transport to Olde Europe. The food was also very tasty as always but it may be my imagination that the portion sizes have decreased. My main gripe was the attitude of the staff. We had dealings with three no less So it was a good representative sample. The ' greeter ' was cool and businesslike and not at all welcoming. We waited 20 minutes for a table outside and were shown to our seat by another businesslike gentleman without an ounce of warmth or personality. Perhaps our waiter/ waitress would exude a little more hospitality ? She did not. With her heavy Eastern European accent she would have fitted in well in Communist Bulgaria. Oh the job must have been a torment to her and I almost felt sorry for her but then I realized that I was the customer and we were in America in 2021. We knew we had to go through this but the ' enjoy's ' which came from her lips I feel we're not heartfelt. All very puzzling. I have been to this restaurant before and the service has been perfectly fine. What is going on ? I have felt greater empathy from bank clerks. Not good if you are in the restaurant business. I will go back as the setting is lovely and the food is good if smaller and pricier than I remember. Go somewhere else where they now how to treat customers, and are organized and train waiters. Well well well, if I could give this latest experience at Kafe Leopold a zero, I would. Let me say that I am not forgiving when it comes to eating out and receiving a bad meal. If I am going to spend my time and money going out to allow someone else to prepare my food, it better be 1) something I really can't cook or don't want to learn how to cook and/or 2) AMAZING food that blows my mind and makes me want more. This was neither of those things. We ordered the "crostini" which was actually 4 ENORMOUS slabs of French bread dripping with gorgonzola and hibiscus. We also made the mistake of ordering the watermelon and feta salad with whatever invisible herbs they claimed to accompany it. It was swimming in oil/vinegar and tasted like water/nothing. After complaining to the very kind manager, we had it wrapped up to go and moved on to our entrees. We each ordered the trio of tea sandwiches and wow. Mine was edible but sadly I was so hungry I didn't even send it back. The other two orders of the sandwiches were insulting and embarrassing. The gruyere and "caramelized onions" sandwich was limp and cold; the apple, cheese, and walnut on pretzel roll was stale, but compared to the others was fine; and the chicken salad on croissant was appalling. There was one piece of chicken shoved into a cold and limp, dry croissant. Needless to say, we sent it back and had the manager come out to apologize and tell us that the prep cooks were new, bla bla. First of all, a monkey could assemble the sandwiches with more finesse. How do you even mess that up? How do you even try to mess that up ?? I'm still scratching my head. Nothing can excuse poorly assembled sandwiches, they are SANDWICHES. And frankly, I don't care why they were bad, just apologize, comp it, and move on. For such a seemingly high quality and refined restaurant nestled in a seemingly high end Nd refined neighborhood of Washington,D.C., I am disappointed in the quality of food. Nothing was remotely delicious (except for dessert, see below) nor plated or presented well. The sacher torte was the only saving grace here. It was tasty and as expected, coming from an Austrian restaurant. But therein lies the problem, one component of the nearly $100 lunchtime meal was good. $60 for just the food, which was bread. $60 for not even good bread. The manager took the alcohol off and the bad watermelon salad. Really? How about one of the sandwich orders and free dessert??? No consistency, no wow factor, no reason to come back here. Tables outside were available, and I did not have to make a deposit to keep a table under my name. The stuff was friendly, accommodating, and absolutely incredible. Suad, Mike and our lovely server Lawrence were absolutely wonderful. It was a great experience to stay and have dinner there. The food and drinks were fantastic (those tequila shots were fantastic!). I wanted to thank the stuff for giving us such a wonderful experience during our visit. We wouldn't have this most exciting experience had it not been for their consideration and generosity. The apple strudel here is to die for! I recently traveled to Austria, and this rivaled the many apfelstrudels consumed there. It is warm and comes with a very tasty scoop of vanilla ice cream. It's big enough to share, though I had the whole thing to myself. I will definitely be coming back for another one of these. I sat at the bar, and the bartender was great. The owner also came by to welcome me. I do have to say that the cappuccino was a disappointment. The staff were obviously stressed out with the crowds as well. We have been going to this very pretty restaurant with it's beautiful patio centered by a beautiful water fountain since we moved to DC six years ago. Today we went after a very long covid absence and left without eating and in disgust. I have a foot injury and am wearing a surgical boot. My husband dropped me off downstairs at the patio while he went to look for parking. I hobbled to the maitre d' and she asked (demanded) my phone number! Really? Why? I refused the request explaining to the young woman that I was there to eat and that I would pay for my meal and that nothing else was required. I sat at a lovely table in the shade and waited about 20 minutes for my husband to arrive. In the interim I asked for a tea with honey. I made the request at least 3 times, perhaps 4 and when it finally arrived I had no spoon, no napkin and no honey. Other diners around me were ordering and being served; I could not even get a tea. My husband arrived and we placed our orders, meanwhile I still did not have the implements for drinking my tea. Again, other diners, some of whom had arrived 10-15 minutes after me were not only drinking what they had ordered, but were actually eating. Disgusted, we got up and went to eat elsewhere. When we told our waitress she told us that they were short staffed. The patio was only half full and everyone but us was eating and drinking. Was I being punished for refusing to give them my phone number? Are they friends and family? No, they re not! Demanding personal information in order to order a meal? Way beyond crazy times. We were planning to take a friend there this week but that is not happening. There is enough craziness in DC these days, having to deal with it while trying to enjoy a meal is 100% unacceptable. Leopold, perhaps you've been alone for too long and require some therapy like so many others who have been traumatized this past year do. Go for it, but don't punish your paying customers. read more

We came here early on Saturday after a 5K for brunch/breakfast. I've heard good things so I was excited to try. We came with a group of 6 and the restaurant wasn't busy, but the service was very slow. We all ordered brunch-y drinks to start. We got the drinks pretty late and all at different times. I got the XOXO, which included champagne and passion fruit, light, sweet and tasty~ One guy from our party, who came about 30 minutes late, got his food first, which was strange. It was awkward to wait for several people of our party to get their food because the timing of the food was all over the place. The food was quite tasty though. I was a fan of my boyfriend's steak and egg hash. It came out in a small cast iron skillet, but it was filling. The one thing I had an issue with was there was a long, blonde hair in my salad which icked me out, but I talked to the manager and she was very apologetic about it, took it off the check, and gave me an almond croissant on the house. The almond croissant was pretty delicious, very crunchy but had a nice, sweet filling. I'm not too sure if I would come back. It's a charming, chic place with Georgetown prices. My favorite casual spot to grab brunch/lunch in Georgetown. It's located in cadys alley so slightly off the beaten path, which is nice. My friends and I went for Sunday brunch and were able to grab a table outside after a short wait. The crowd is always a mix of families, couples and friends. (Don't be surprised to see a stroller next to your table.) I usually order the kale salad, which is excellent, but I went with the smoked salmon omelet. The omelet was almost dry and could have used more salt, but overall fine. My friends both ordered the avocado toast and really enjoyed that. Well....definitely don't recommend this place based on service and good. The 2 big reasons I go to restaurants. The service failed in every aspect. They have hired a bunch of high schoolers who obviously don't like being there. The cleaning crew (that comes and clears your table/plates etc are super nice). It's the wait staff that takes your orders that have an air about them that they portray that is such a turn off. The food is oily and unhealthy just for the sake of it. The chocolate croissant is cold and does not taste good at all. Definitely don't recommend it if you want to be treated well and eat good food. read more

Leopold's Kafe & Konditorei is a Eurocafe tucked inside a charming alleyway (Cady's alley - reminiscent of Parisian roads, and complete with cobblestone paving) in Georgetown. If you like perfectly cut cakes, Instagram-able meals, smaller portions, lighter (but satisfying) flavors, you will love Kafe Leopold. My girlfriend and I stopped by for brunch on a sunny Saturday morning. The interior of the cafe is brightly lit and clean, with a playful color palette of orange and white. The service was spot-on and attentive. Plates were cleared from our table in a timely manner, and we never waited too long for the waitress to acknowledge us. With regards to food, we ordered coffee, the Spätzle, the Omlette, and the Fraisier. The coffee came out hot, with a small square of hazelnut chocolate. I dropped mine in my coffee and stirred - in hindsight, it would have been better enjoyed by simply nibbling on it as I sipped. The spätzle was a delight. It was served in a small cast iron pan - the egg noodles were slightly browned, giving them a pleasant caramel flavor. I highly recommend ordering this dish if you're stopping by for brunch on the weekends. The omlette had less seasoning than the spätzle, but was equally delicious. I choose to believe that the chef wanted to avoid covering up the flavor of the egg and salmon - however, some diners may want to avoid this dish if they're looking for something stronger in flavor. The Fraisier was an absolute surprise. If you stop by, you MUST order this. The serving size is small: if you're a big eater, you may want to order one just for yourself. It is a pistachio cream with pistachio cake, topped over a layer of fresh strawberries. Kafe Leopold took everything I was looking for in a Saturday brunch (except for price, perhaps), and packaged it into a neat experience. I ordered their Easter especially brunch, tuna hash. It was delicious and the tuna came out to be perfect. I would come back for brunch again next time when I'm back to DC. read more

There was a problem that delayed our order coming out but once we pointed this out to the manager, they really stepped up to get us taken care of. The Neapolitan Cake here is MUST. I mean a MUST! The first time I had it, a co-worker brought it in and told everyone it was the get our of jail free ticket if anyone were to ever mess up with their significant other. And boy she wasn't kidding! Came here for brunch last week. Since I couldn't make a reservation I came here extra early on a Sunday (8:30 AM). I was with a group of 15 people. I had been here before for lunch where the prices of the sandwiches are decently priced, but ever since that visit I have been dying to come here to brunch. When I saw the menu I was surprised to see how expensive the options for brunch were. My husband and I got a dish that had chorizo with eggs and potatoes. That's when things started to take a bad turn: first of all I asked for scrambled eggs and the waitress came back with sunny side eggs which I completely do not like. Also the chorizo was not in bite size pieces, instead it was as if they used ground up sausage instead! The waitress clearly had heard my request when it came to my eggs. I did not appreciate how their chorizo was not real chorizo! Also, they have a ridiculous rule on how they do not like when patrons wants to substitute something. The food also took more than 30 minutes to arrive- mind you this is when the restaurant was not that busy. Luckily, we tried some of their baked goods and that saved the day. Overall this place is very overrated and I would only recommend checking it out it for a baked good item so you can first hand what all the hype is about. Even with that be ready to spend a lot of money (most of its baked goods started at $7 (and up). If the staff was a bit faster and actually listened to me when I made my order maybe it would have changed my review. read more

NO SPOON FOR YOU! We have been patronizing Kafe Leopold all during the pandemic and for years before that. This morning I went with a friend who was on her first restaurant outing since being fully vaccinated and we sat outside on the empty patio (it was raining). We told the hostess we would only be having coffee and maybe a pastry and she said sure, and brought us menus. Our waiter then came and informed us that if we were only getting coffee and a pastry we would have to get it to-go. I can't tell you how many times I've gone there and just had coffee and a croissant or a scone in the morning. Plus, the patio was empty. Not wanting to fuss, one of us ordered a lunch item and the other had a scone. When our cappuccinos came, we asked for little coffee spoons. No spoons, our waiter said. We had to use the little wooden sticks. During the pandemic Kafe Leopold offered spoons wrapped in pristine plastic sheaths. Now we can't get a spoon at all? The usual small wrapped square of chocolate was missing as well. This is how customer loyalty is rewarded? Too bad. read more

We went to Leopold on a weekend day around 11 am. We didn't have to wait to be seated which was great, even though the place was busy. This was our first time to Kafe Leopold overall the experienced was ok. Sitting arrangements were tight, the table was small and right next to another table which didn't give much room for comfort. Also the coat rack was right next to us so everything someone reached for their coat I was elbowed. The menu didn't offer much, I decided to try one of their specials, sweet potato hash, and was happy with it. If the menu had a bit more variety and the seating was more accommodating it would have made a difference. Nice place to have coffee and desert, not a big fan of the food. read more

This place kind of breaks my heart because I feel like the food and the service used to be so much better a year or two ago. First the apfel strudel used to blow me away. It was thin slices of apple layered underneath a chewy pastry served warm. It was such a unique take on the traditional dish that I would sometimes come just for that. However, they don't make it like that anymore and now I don't think that there's anything great about the strudel. Other things have also started to change. A few months ago, when my sister was visiting town I took her here and we literally walked out during the middle of our meal. Why? Because we ordered an appetizer and two entrees and told the waitress we wanted everything to come out at the same time, but this is how it came out instead: the appetizer first, then one of the entrees. No big deal. But after we were done with the appetizer and first entree, 20 MINUTES pass and the second entree is still not out. We asked the waitress about it and she gave us an attitude saying that we somehow told her that we wanted things one at a time. So we are like ok, and ask when we can expect our second entree and she says that the order was just put in, so 20 MINUTES later. This is the point when I was like, forget this, asked for our check and walked out of there. I have been here 2 times since then and the service was thankfully not as terrible as the experience I had with my sister but the quality of the overall experience is still just not the same as it used to be. read more
