I've been eating here (all meals) consistently for about 5-6 years, and usually have amazing service. Sunday was the first time service was anything less than spectacular, so I am going to cut them some slack and chalk it up to it being extra busy for brunch. Showed up at 12:20, put our names down...got seated at 1:15-1:30...didn't have a waitstaff stop by until 2 when we ordered drinks and our food. Took another ten minutes JUST TO GET WATER. The food actually came super fast, but our waitress kept disappearing for long periods of time, and our water glasses were never refilled. I had to ask for a refill of iced tea, and I was brought - wait for it - iced coffee - with a lot of grounds at the bottom... Took us until about 3pm to get the check, pay, and leave. We didn't tip super well (like 10%) but whatever. I'm going to keep eating here for sure, I will just try and eat at off-peak times. read more

This is the cutest place for brunch. We stopped in here this morning and even though it was crowded, we only waited for about 5 minutes. I had the lemon and herb chicken, which was very tender and flavorful. It was gently brushed with a nice gloss of olive oil. I also sampled the smoked trout hash, which was delicious but more like smoked trout with seasoned roasted red potatoes rather than a hash. The bread basket was filled with warm, buttery rolls that were so good (yeah, I decided to be a pig and polished off about 3/4 of it myself) and came with butter balls and olive oil. Service was very attentive and friendly; our waitress was nice enough to point out the dishes that we were deciding between as they came out so that it would be easier for us to make our selections. We met a friend here for brunch on a snowy December Saturday. Although it was busy, it wast full and there wasn't a wait. The 4 of us had coffee (which was a thick, rich European blend), salmon hash, Croque Monsieur, scrambled eggs, 2 Danish and a slice of quiche. The cost was $80 which was high for what we got but I guess not high considering the area we were in. Would I go back? Yes, for the almond croissant and for the coffee but I'd probably pass on bfast. read more

Went here for restaurant week and I have to say I was pretty happy with the choice. They had 3 choices for appetizer, 3 entrees, and a choice of dessert from the case. I ended up getting the salad which had a sour lemony vinaigrette on it. A few of my co workers had soups which all tasted amazing. I wish I had gotten a soup. I don't remember all the entrees, but most of us ended up getting the lamb. It was good lamb, and very tender. The portion was not all that bad for restaurant week, some places give you laughable sizes. For dessert I got this toffee dark chocolate cake, and it was very rich, but not that sweet. Others got the cheesecake, and assorted desserts. All in all, we left with smiles on our faces. Oh yeah, the atmosphere was very nice, I'd probably take a date there. There is a very nice mood to the place. One more thing, the bathrooms are European style. There are 4 rooms, 2 blue and 2 pink. Lousy service, lousier food. Don't come here if you actually want to eat. I haven't been in since my last review and I thought to give it another chance but boy was I wrong. We got there around 6:30pm before the usual peak time. We asked to be seated outside but the hostess said there wasn't any tables now but some are paying. We asked if we could eat inside and then maybe sit outside for dessert. She said that was against the restaurant policy and that you HAD to eat dinner if you sat outside. She saw our dumbfounded faces and apologized that it was her manager that enforced this policy, not her. Not sure what kind of policy that is but it's completely stupid. Now to the food, or whatever the stuff on our plate was: We ordered the calamari to start: it was pretty good to be honest but they ran out of the sauce that it usually comes with which was the best part. Okay fair enough.. You were busy, I guess. We then ordered our entrees. The skirt steak and the mussels. The steak was mediocre and definitely not worth it's price. The mussels oh the mussels were literally in a tomato paste bowl.. It tasted so bad I barely ate it. We ended up sharing the steak because it was edible. Next was dessert because I was raving to my husband how amazing this place was for dessert. Didn't think I would quickly eat my words. We ordered the soufflé which was good, not great.. It was better a few years back. The two cafe au laits we ordered came 15 minutes later and was basically warm milk, when we specifically asked for doubly shots. We ended up returning them because even the waiter noticed how watery and WHITE the "coffee" was. Not to mention the horrible and slow service.. God forbid you ask for a napkin or extra spoon. If you go to Leopold's, make sure you go during off-hours, when no one else is there. You service will be good, as ours was the other day. It was rainy and early -- around 5:30 -- when we stopped in for a bite before a movie. I ordered coffee and the artichoke-potato soup with buttered croutons. My friend ordered the pea/parm/salad green bruschetta. The coffee was great -- they serve Julius Meinl Austrian coffee it in an oversized cup, which is placed on a silver-toned tray and served with cream, a small biscotti-like cookie and a little glass full of water to hold your spoon once you have used it to stir your coffee. The coffee tasted fresh and was brewed at full-strength - delicious. The soup was hearty, creamy, and thick - and quite tasty. My friend's salad/bruscetta was good but for the fava beans, which tasted like they had been previously frozen. I would definitely go back again - when it isn't crowded. read more

Kafe Leopold is one of my Georgetown favorites! It has become the spot I take friends visiting for evening coffee and dessert. You can usually walk in and there's space at the bar if you're just there for dessert. I should mention their pastries and their beignets (freshly made!) are to dieeee for. Their coffee is amazing and their cappuccino is my go to. The ambience and interior is lovely with white tables and orange chairs. There's also outdoor seating which is perfect for good weather days. I recently also learned there's a secret seating space (I consider it a secret because I didn't know about it earlier lolol) off to a side indoors where there is plenty of seating. We were seated there the last time I went and it was nice and quiet! I've only had brunch here once but I did really like my avocado toast and egg - nothing like some fresh guac with perfect seasoning with a side of eggs. read more

Right up there with the best brunch I've had in DC. Such a great restaurant to eat at on a nice sunny day. The outdoor patio is wonderful if the temperature is doable, but if it is too hot, sitting inside with the AC and the windows open is a great alternative. The menu is Austrian themed and every single thing we ordered was amazing. I ordered the breakfast bread pudding, which was delicious. The savory bread pudding was served atop of a beautiful pile of lemony, buttery spinach. We also ordered the lemon souffle pancakes with blueberry compote. The pancakes were velvety and delicious, and the blueberry syrup was perfect - not overly sweet. We also ordered a trio of the mini sandwiches, the tunafish, ham and pesto, and carmelized onion and grueye. The latter felt like it must have been dunked in butter, but was SO delicious - the equivalent of eating French onion soup in sandwich form. For next time: the display case full of incredible looking cakes and other various pastries. We ordered an almond croissant, which was great. We also ordered a few of the Parisian macaroons to eat later in the afternoon, and if they are indicative of the rest of the baked goods, Leopold's is an incredible bakery in addition to being a great restaurant. The brunch food was great: the hot chocolate is exactly how I like it: chocolate flavor and not too sweet. The emperor's pancakes are amazing, the moist texture and sweet flavor were approved by the Germans at the table although they were a bit disappointed about the lack of prunes. The staff was not very friendly but efficient so it was fine. We were in the lounge area with brick walls and pictures of blond bombshells which gives it a modern chic ambiance. They don't take reservations which is quite inconvenient but they were able to accommodate a big group after a wait of 30mins for Saturday brunch. You have to go in to the alley for the entrance so it is not right on M street (just follow the signs). read more

I came here for a dinner with the girls to celebrate finishing our graduate thesis. The food was great, not healthy by any means but isn't that what makes it good! The outdoor seating is a must, the inside is a little plain. Of course there was a downside to being outside, since it is passage between two streets there was lots of foot traffic, with dogs...that like to sniff Austrian food :) Also it seemed eveyone out there was smoking, so it did get pretty smoky. It has a Georgetown price as well, my celebration did cost me a pretty penny. A meal that consisted of one draft beer, 1/5th of an appetizer, an entree, 1/3rd of a desert and tip put me back $45! So I would recommend it for a special night (unless you normally spend $40 a person) but not for everyday fare. read more

To be honest, I'm not much of a breakfast person. Normally, I don't partake of the "Most Important Meal of the Day." Personally, that meal for me is dinner, so when someone says let's go get some breakfast, I react like someone who's just been asked if they'd like a colonoscopy. Yeah. that's the face. Still, I like to keep an open mind about things and it didn't look like we were going to eat lunch for awhile (was in DC for a graduation with a few buddies), so I went along with it. Yelping/Googling breakfast options in the area around Georgetown yielded this little gem near campus. It was a drizzly Friday morning as we exited the cab, walked down a flight of stairs and walked into a completely empty restaurant. That should have been our first sign that this was going to be as good as trying to self-circumcise with a butter knife. Ignoring our better instincts, we trekked on inside and got seated at pretty much any table we wanted. The decor could only be described as Ikea meets Eurotrash and really, club music at 9am in the morning was just not what I was expecting to hear as I'm trying to chow down on some grub. I think this place would probably be better served at night than as a breakfast spot. The menu was in German/English. German for the names of the dishes with an English explanation underneath. The 3 of us settled for the Leopold's Fruhstuck, which I can only surmise means "in the ass" in German because Leopold's definitely "Fruhstuck" it in my tushie with this $10 plate of scrambled eggs (probably the only good thing on the plate - fluffy and light), 2 slices of cured (read overly seasoned) and smoked (read almost burnt) ham, and toast which was essentially a deconstructed Egg and Ham McMuffin. Also ordered a side of "fresh-squeezed" orange juice that was a little tart and seemed like it was fresh-squeezed by the Minute Maid. For half the price, I could have had this meal and a side of delicious Mickey D's hash browns. If anything this meal served to turn me off breakfast even more. We left with lighter wallets, and still empty stomaches in search of better breakfast fare. read more

Cute little european style cafe we stumbled upon in Georgetown on a recent (our first) visit to DC. We were there for brunch. My partner ordered the special omelette - something cheesy with scallions and bechamel. i had the souffle eggs with plum compote. The serving sizes were very generous - so much so that i didn't have any room for the gorgeous desserts they had on display. The omelette was fine, nothing spectacular but tasty. The souffle eggs (kinda like french toast) were delicious. The coffees were fantastics too. Overall a nice little find in Georgetown. read more

A great brunch place, even in the winter when you can't enjoy the quaint outdoor seating. The service was great and the atmosphere was upbeat. There is a good energy about this place: it's bright and airy, with unusual art and decor, making it quite unique for our area. I felt like I was in Europe, which is cool considering the restaurant is right smack in the heart of Georgetown; a little escape is nice every once in a while especially when it's close by. The other patrons all seemed to be in good spirits, which added to the appeal and experience. We met a guy at the bar who was a local and had great things to say about the food and beer selection. He was a Georgetown local and obviously has plenty of options so his enthusiasm was reassuring. We tried a few of the tea sandwiches, my favorite being the farm cheese, apples and walnut sammy. The smoked salmon sammy wasn't as fresh as I would have liked but was a nice balance of textures with the crunchy cucumber relish. The grilled cheese was just okay but it might have been because it wasn't freshly grilled once I tried it - a combination of a delay in bringing it to the table and my friend and I chit chatting for a while before we dug in. My entree was amazing! I ordered the homemade ricotta with fruits and it was a wonderful filling yet light meal with wonderful flavors and textures. I highly recommend it. The only catch is that I wanted more grilled bread and they charge for extras. I didn't ask how much - I just grabbed the basket of bread at our table instead. I hate to waste perfectly good bread but the grilled bread was a better match for the ricotta than the bread in the basket. My friend had the butternut squash soup and said it was great too. They have a bakery right smack in the middle of the restaurant, which also took me back to Europe. The options looked delicious - I might make a stop here next time I'm planning a picnic or just in need of a deliciously carb-ridden snack. Awesome location in GTown canal area. The courtyard is beautiful. I think the best thing I had there was their Cafe Au Lait. Wow! That thing blew me away...I know it's only coffee and milk but wow, what a treat. I also had their lemon pancakes which were very tasty. The environment is very European. The wait staff is friendly. Maybe not the quickest, but friendly and helpful. Biggest drawback would be that it's pricey, but it is also Georgetown. You pay for location. This is the best outdoor patio in the city. As the address mentions, it's in an alley in Georgetown and is much quieter than M St and Wisconsin. It will make you feel like you're at a European cafe. I come here to drink a few beers on a beautiful Saturday spring/summer afternoon. The food is good, not great. I always get something simple. Calamari, a couple tea sandwiches, or french fries. There's often a wait but they will text you when your table is ready and you can shop or get a drink in the meantime. I wouldn't recommend going here in the winter or if the weather doesn't permit eating/drinking outside. If the weather is bad, go to Pizzeria Paradiso down the street (and have some drinks in the basement first because there will probably be a wait), or Kintaro for some sushi and ramen just down the alley. Really nice spot to grab breakfast. It's got a very modern and European feel, unique for the area. The food was very tasty and the service was very prompt. Shared a potato and leek soup, a ham and cheese croissant, and a hash. All were very delicious and came out quickly after ordering them. It was a rainy day when we went, but the outdoor seating looked very nice, and the restaurant is huddled in a small alley of shops off of M street, which can get a little busy. Disasters happen. But its how they are handled that counts. It seemed all the staff jumped in to recover an injured waitress who apparently had 9 tables in limbo. Not sure if this was a race issue or something else (we were the only Asians in the restaurant, and everyone else was promptly served). Come on, racism is SO unoriginal and lame. Let's start off with the good: The food here is amazing. I came here yesterday for my third visit with friends and, like the last two visits, the food was exceptional. Whether you prefer sweet or savory, there are plenty of options on the menu to satisfy anybody. I've gone with the Croque Madame twice now, and ended up wiping my plate clean each time. My only complaint about the meal is that the ring of mustard they put around the plate is so small. I could easily down a full bottle of the stuff. If you're looking for snacks, the almond croissants and scones are equally incredible. The bad: Although the restaurant is clean and inviting, the atmosphere can seem a bit pretentious. While that's not worth deducting a star, as the food definitely warrants five (and it's not entirely the restaurant's fault), the service does. After being seated, my friends and I waited nearly twenty minutes for the first visit from our waitress. I don't mind leaving time between ordering drinks and meals, or between courses, but the first order and the drinks need to happen promptly. I wouldn't go here alone, but Leo's is definitely worth a visit with a group of friends. The minor negatives can be largely ignored and the food will make you wonder why you can't stop eating. read more

I have friends who really love this place. It is located in Georgetown, just off M street, in Cady's Alley. Its being a little off the main street was appealing to me, even though I was expecting something a little more intimate, and it did not really match my expectations. However, while the setting is modern, it has style. On the plus side, the food was actually better than I was expecting, hence the 4-stars. I came here for lunch on a Saturday with a friend, on a cold december day. We had to wait for a few minutes, but not too long, for our seat (apparently they do not take reservations) and we were then taken to our table, right in the middle of the room. However, despite the fact I would usually hate such a location, it was not loud and my friend and I had a good time and a nice conversation. She ordered the salmon, while I ordered the branzino. The branzino came over a bed of spinach and a creamy sauce with capers. It was cooked really well, grilled, slightly crispy on the outside but tender inside. The spinach were also tasty. I tasted a piece of my friend's salmon, which was also quite good, and came with a mix of vegetables and walnuts. Service was also good. Price for the two plates, and tea for both, including taxes but without tip came to about 55 dollars. read more

I can't believe I've never heard of this Austrian cafe before, they obviously don't need to advertise! A friend of mine introduced to to Leopold's last night. I had the chicken salad which was delicious, two large pieces of the most wonderful chicken I've had in a long, long time. It was cooked to perfection and I barely noticed the green salad as the chicken was so good. Then we both indulged in apple strudel which was also delicious, and the Austrians are known for all over the world and the coffee was also to die for! Service I have to admit, was a bit on the slow side and the place wasn't even that busy for a Friday night but they were very polite and courteous so we didn't mind. read more

This may be the most consistently fantastic brunch spot in DC. I've been several times and at each I've been served amazing food and coffee with great service. My most recent trip was this past Sunday. It's the only time I've had to wait, but even then it was only 10 minutes or so to get a table for two in the cafe. If you want an amazing dessert to cap off your night, this is the place to go. My date and I sat right next to the fountain, and we shared the chocolate torte. This was no ordinary torte. My husband indulged in the Kakao ($3.50), a mug of hot chocolate with whipped cream, while Eamon sipped on teespeczialitaeten ($2.75), a jasmine tea. What I loved: While I'm sad to say that none of the macarons were my cup of tea, the hot chocolate was perfectly bitter with a hint of sweet, and, if I were to recommend a flavor of macaron to anyone, it would be the very creative, surprising Lemon Basil. First yelp review, because I'm usually not too passionate about leaving behind comments but I felt my experience warranted it (since I rely very heavily on Yelp when dining). The setting was great, outside by a fountain and shaded. It's secluded from traffic so you feel a bit removed from the faster paced environment in Georgetown. The food itself was horrible. I ordered the poached eggs with avocado toast. The eggs were served in a cup that was very full of liquid and the avocado toast was burnt, with a very small layer of avocado on top. The part of my meal I was most looking forward to and was incredibly disappointing. Spending $18 on this meal I expected more than a bare minimum spread and sub par eggs. My spouse ordered a brunch menu item (neither of us can specifically remember the name) that was served in a cast iron pan. It was okay in terms of quality, incredibly heavy, and not meant for one person to consume in one sitting. About half of it was consumed, and the staff immediately accused my spouse of not liking the meal and was quite confrontational. It was an incredibly awkward way to end our meal. Come to Leopold's on a warm night, and you might score an outdoor table in the courtyard-y area of Cady's Alley. It is beautiful and an absolutely unique experience. Don't come here if you're trying to fill your belly because this place is all about atmosphere and taste. If you're not too adventurous, be careful when you order. I love... - the tea sandwiches - try the smoked salmon, egg salad or the gruyere. $10 for a "trio." - winter cocktails! I love the chocolate dream and the esterhazy (sp?). On the expensive side ($10) but delicious and soothing! - individual desserts. The hazelnut cake is not too sweet but has lots of different layers in its texture and taste. The cheesecake with peach filling is fruity sweet and has just the right amount of tart. Delicious! It's a bit hard to find, but if you have the address with you, you won't miss it. It's across the street from Modern. You WILL impress your date with this hidden gem in Georgetown. read more
