I love the novelty of conveyor belt sushi, but I feel like if the restaurant is empty you should just shut the conveyor belt down and let people order instead. We went here for an early dinner and arrived at around 5:30. There was only one other table with people at it at the restaurant who were just leaving as we were getting situated, and they had the conveyor belt going. The problem was, since we were basically the only people there eating, it was the same boring variety of stuff going 'round and 'round with the cold sushi getting warm and the hot items getting cold. We ended up hanging out for around an hour or so, and by 6:30ish the place started filling up and things started getting taken off the belt at a pace that was good, but our experience before then was pretty mediocre. I guess if you're going to a place like this, go at absolute prime time hours. Otherwise, your experience really suffers. The sushi we did have was decent, nothing life changing or anything, but you could tell it had been sitting there for a while. read more

Made a reservation online for a special occasion, not even a big one, 3 people. 4-5 days later called the day of the reservation to confirm they got it. Woman on the phone said yep, got the reservation but was clearly trying to get off the phone. Get there at 5:30 for the reservation, checked in, waited a half hour, no table in sight. Ended up leaving and going to a place across the street. Won't be returning not just because of the reservation, but because during my half hour waiting for a table the staff there seemed rude and dismissive to not just me but other customers and more importantly, it looked like the same food rotated on the belt 8-10 times over, which would very well be all day. Better places to go that won't treat you like an idiot and have actually fresh food. read more

Mediocre sushi and rolls. They use WAY too much rice and it detracts from the integrity of the food. If you're going to charge what you charge, keep it honest. Rice is a cheap ingredient and by buffing up your rolls and sushi with a giant wad of rice doesn't give the impression of more food. It just takes away from it. read more

I really like this place. I only found Kai Sushi about five weeks ago but I've been there a number of times since. There are a number of good Sushi restaurants in the suburbs, but Kai Sushi is a Conveyor belt sushi bar. Meaning there's no waiting between orders. Plus, you get to see what the actual dish looks like before grabbing it off the conveyor. Prices are VERY reasonable in my opinion. I eat a LOT and usually walk out of there under $30. That price easily doubles at any of the other local sushi restaurants. Staff is VERY nice. After about my second or third time eating there they remember what I like to drink and where I sit. Fluent in English and 普通话. I can't think of anything negative to say about Kai Sushi. They have all the Nigiri Sushi I like, plus the rolls I prefer from time to time. So I can't say anything bad about them. Very nice in this day and time! OH, the conveyor takes about 4.5 minutes to make a complete circle, but if you want something faster just ask the staff. They will locate the dish on the conveyor and bring it to you. read more

Very rarely do I write a review on the first visit unless the experience is something to really talk about. And while this place just opened just five days ago, there was an hour left and no one but staff in the place AND we had just purchased take out to eat at home, we HAD to stop by and check out this new place....and we ended up staying for dinner!! I have to say, I'm sooooo excited! The idea alone of rotary service (a variety of different options on different colored plates riding along a conveyor belt and people pick and choose what they want right off the belt) alone is so exciting! We walked in and the whole staff was so welcoming. Ok, so we were the only ones in the place but we've been in the same position before at other restaurants and weren't treated as well. Linda (I think she is the owner) welcomed us so warmly, showed us to a place along the bar, explained the grand opening and how things worked and then mentioned "free ice cream" to celebrate the grand opening after dinner! She also stated that plates are replaced every two hours if not eaten. And she added that items that were not on the conveyor belt could be ordered if so desired. So, maybe the available options might have been sitting a bit, but how long is uncertain. Why? Because the food still tasted fresh! Trust me...the Hub doesn't like buffet style so the idea of rotary service should have been enough to walk away. But he ate! We tried a variety of the rolls and some nigiri. We also ordered tempura shrimp because you can always get a feel for the quality of how food is prepared if the tempura shrimp is greasy, overcoated, served cold, or flavor is off. None of the above...check! As for the value...we had read a comment about the plates being a little overpriced. Um, I'm not sure where these people are going for sushi but anyone who goes to an "actual" sushi restaurant has to agree that the value at this place is so worth it! I mean our meal was a third of the average cost of a meal at our fave sushi place, and that's with manager discounts! We walked away fully sated, including the sweet freebie ice cream and extremely excited to come back! While I know that they need the business to stay open, I'm hoping the word out is limited because I will be so sad if we come back and have to wait! read more

One packet of wasabi paste and so far no one has asked if I need anything else. Or how I am doing. Minimal amount of sashimi on rotary belt. And many open slots. My friend and I wanted to try Kai Sushi due to the great ratings & reviews on Yelp. I frequent a rotary sushi spot in my town which I enjoy, and it was my friend's first time trying out a rotary sushi spot, so we were excited to say the least. The service was good and prompt which is to be appreciated. However, the rice was mushy on the first roll I grabbed off the conveyor belt (Spicy Salmon Maki) which made me hesitant from trying other maki rolls. My friend thoroughly enjoyed some of the none rice plates such as the squid salad, edamame (which is hard to mess up anyway), and a couple other sashimi plates. Though the sushi pieces were a decent size, there was way too much rice on most of the nigiri plates. Overall, the friendly and speedy service made it an enjoyable experience, but I plan on sticking to my usual rotary sushi joint. read more

Kai is a welcome addition to the Lombard area, especially since there aren't many sushi places in the area to begin with, let alone a kaitensushi place. The service is great and prices are reasonable (ranging from $1.50 to $6.50 per plate) although the total can add up very quickly. If you're looking to eat until completely full here, expect to spend up to double that which you would spend at an AYCE place. The quality here is middle of the line. In particular I liked the tuna and yellowtail nigiris which contained solid, cohesive cuts of the fish, as well as the tasty mackerel nigiri and eel Maki. I found to be okay the tamago nigiri which was sweet although a bit dense/overdone, and the salmon nigiri which had a slimy texture. Less liked was the rainbow roll which was inconsistent with ingredient proportions. As Ryan Howard would say, "She'd probably be a 6 in New York but she's like a 7 here in Lombard." And so considering the competition in the area, I give Kai a 7 which is equal to 3.5 stars out of 5. Now as to whether this should round up or down, I will round the score down because it would be nice to see some more non-sushi items such as fruits, drinks, and/or especially desserts also populate the conveyor belt. read more

And, I couldn't believe the prices--so reasonable! We had a ton of sushi (plate after plate after plate) and our bill for six people (including 4 teenagers) was something like $65 before tip. It was crazy since we usually spend way more. I'm still trying to understand how that worked out. I would definitely go here over any all you can eat sushi place (if that's your thing). read more

I know what you're thinking, conveyer belt sushi?! With that thought set aside, this place is surprising good! Well about as good as you can get from sushi in the suburbs. The highlight for me was the prices of the sushi and the great service. An added bonus is that it will keep your toddler entertained for about 10-15 minutes (which is like 2 hours in toddler time). What's nice is that the portion sizes are 4 pieces of sushi so you can mix it up before you get the "sushi stall". In case you were wondering, the sushi stall is when you eat 6 pieces of sushi and stare at the remaining two pieces because you feel like you might puke if you finish the rest. The sushi quality is somewhere in the middle but still pretty good compared to most places out here. Pros: -Excellent service!! The serving staff is very friendly and are constantly tending to you. Came here again, on a Saturday night, and have to say I'm pretty disappointed. The main problem was, the sushi on the conveyor belt is not readily available and lacks variety. There are only 3-4 plates per each type, and only 1 for a specialty item. If these are picked up, it takes another 15-20 minutes to get replaced. The waiter just says, feel free to order if you don't see something on the belt. Well..the only reason I come to a conveyor belt sushi restaurant is so that I can eat off the belt, not to order off the menu. There was a wide selection of items on the sushi belt and when I couldn't find something I wanted the chef made it in about 3 minutes. The service was outstanding! We ate EVERYTHING, well mostly, at least it seemed (few things we didn't try were squid and anything with eel). Soooooo good!!! Randomly wandered in here when my friend and I were hungry but couldn't decide what for, and we were VERY happy with our choice! The staff right off the bat were super friendly and helpful. Taught us how it all worked, and we were off! My friend and I shared the plates that had two to four pieces each. All together we spent about 20 bucks between us, so a full meal of sushi fro $10 wasn't bad at all! So great! Came here w my son. We loved the conveyer belt concept. Sushi was really fresh and they had a wide variety. Linda the manager was very friendly. We got there at 11:30am on a Thursday. It started filling up around 11:45 (but there was still plenty of seating). You can start eating right away as the sushi passes by your table. We ordered a chicken fried rice that was VERY good. Our bill was $30 for 2. We got 7 plates of sushi, lemonades, and the fried rice. They gave us free ice cream at the end. Very clean and nicely decorated place. The sushi was wonderful and well priced, and for you vegetarians out there, they not only have vegetarian options, but they will also personally make you vegetarian options. This is a new place that just opened up with an actual conveyor belt so I had to try. Service was great, the restaurant is clean (new), and the sushi was decent. The prices were a little steep, with plates ranging from $1.25 to $6.50 (all b/w 2-4 pieces per plate). I didn't really think the pricier plates were worth it (ie. dragon rolls). For the nigiri rolls, prices were around $2-$3 and the fish pieces are pretty big. The rice taste/texture was also not the best. But if you want the conveyor belt experience and want the convenience of eating right when you sit down, then it's not a bad place to try. If you are looking for more of an unlimited sushi experience then I would suggest Hokkai as they offer unlimited decent sushi for ~$20/person. read more

Terrible customer service means we won't be back. We arrived around 5pm and got the last table. Maybe 5:30 was when our waitress's shift ended....because she disappeared. We asked another waitress twice for the check. We had to stop her to speak to her because she wouldn't even look in our direction because we were not her table. She nodded her head but never brought the check. So then we asked a male waiter. He said he would speak to the waitress. We should have just left. It didnt seem like they cared we were there...so maybe they would've just let us walk out. We have consciences though. We asked a 4th time for the check. Meanwhile there was a line of people waiting to get a table and eat and we had to wait 40min for the check. They probably would have let us just sit there for hours taking up space. The owner and manager needs to speak to staff. Nobody wanted to take care of us because we didn't "belong" to them. As a side note, the little plastic tops that go on the dishes on the conveyor belt are greasy and smudgey and don't look like they are ever cleaned. read more

I am giving this place 5 stars because nothing was bad about it and everything was good about it. There is nothing I didn't like about this place. The model is super rad, the waitresses were VERY attentive and outgoing and kind in a genuine and appealing way, and for SUSHI these prices are off the dang chain. And the sushi itself was as good as any sushi I've ever eaten anywhere else, if not even better. All in all, this place knows exactly what it is and what it wants to be. It is pleasant and welcoming and clean but it is NOT hoidy-toidy high dining, which I absolutely love. Paying out the nose for sushi bothers me an awful lot, because I love sushi but I know most of the time I'm just paying a lot for it because "that's how it is." Kai approaches sushi without the novelty and luster of "exotic" and instead as it should be as just good, satisfying food to have for lunch or dinner, the same as I would imagine many people in Japan and abroad treat it. This place is for people who love sushi as food and not necessarily as an 'experience.' Though the conveyor belt system was a fun experience in its own right. The exceedingly reasonable prices reflected that this is a place for middle class folks like me who just really like sushi and Japanese cuisine but can't afford to throw sooooo much money at it. Plus, despite what one may think about a place with a model such as this, the sushi is actually all relatively fresh and gets made in the back per order if you want something not on the belt. But it's very fast. It had not many frills or bright lights or any of that nonsense, but at the same time I feel it probably had more of a genuine flair of Japanese culture and the Japanese experience than any of those pricey fancy-pants places with the white hats and the cleavers and the chopping heads off of a wet fish and the hard-cover menus and the red font that looks like ink wash. This type of restaurant actually originated in Japan in, like, the 70s and is very common and popular there. I'm pretty sure the owners just brought that experience with them as something they intimately knew from Japan and threw it into a building in Lombard. I remember seeing this sort of thing in a mall in Scotland and being envious of it. I was elated to find that there is now one just 5 minutes from where I work and that it was everything I wanted it to be. All in all, I loved it here and quite frankly I can see no reason I should ever go anywhere else for sushi from now on. I will be back maaaaaany times. read more

For this style of Sushi, this place rocks. The service is outstanding. Usually at this sort of place they seat you and forget about you. That is not the case here. The staff is highly attentive - even better than many traditional table service restaurants. The sushi is priced well, not cheap, but fairly priced and they have a good variety including a few items I have not seen before. Of course they have the standards but they also have a few items like sweet potato maki or chicken tempura maki for timid first time sushi eaters.
