One star - Disappointing experience for a "family owned" establishment I visited this restaurant as a single mom with my 2-year-old son, looking forward to enjoying a meal out together. While the restaurant advertises itself as family owned, it is definitely not family friendly. Partway through our meal, one of the chefs actually came out from the kitchen to tell me that my son was making too much noise. This was incredibly embarrassing and hurtful. My toddler was just being a normal 2-year-old - not screaming or having a meltdown, just typical toddler sounds. I was so upset that I asked the servers to pack up our food and left in tears. What should have been a pleasant evening out became a horrible experience that made me feel unwelcome and judged as a parent. If you're going to call yourself "family owned," you should be prepared to welcome actual families. There are much better restaurants in the area that understand that children are part of family dining experiences. I will not be returning and cannot recommend this place to other parents. read more

The food, amazing. The service, professional and kind. The environment, very relaxing. I'd give this place a 8.5 out of 10. The only 2 things that kept my rating from being a perfect 10 is that the food comes out super slow (literally 1 roll at a time) and the pricing for the Shrimp tempura is a little outrageous to me. $27 for 6 shrimp and some veggies? Online it says a different price and I know it's silly but the tempura was why I ended up here. But I didn't end up getting any because of the price. It's more expensive then their most expensive roll. Lol! But I'd still recommend this place hands down. Just maybe find somewhere else to get your tempura. Or be willing to pay. Kaido is our go-to spot for sushi between Nevada City and Grass Valley. As a third-generation Angeleno who moved to Nevada City a few years ago--and a self-proclaimed sushi snob--I know good sushi! While I understand why people love 'Sushi On The Raw' (it's great too), if you're looking for quality sushi without breaking the bank, Kaido is the spot. Chef Kazuhiko's sushi is traditional, with generous cuts of fresh, delicious fish. If I'm in the mood for a little more fusion or a wider range of fish options, I might go to Raw occasionally, but Kaido is truly a hidden gem, especially for Grass Valley. I highly recommend their toro cuts--whether it's salmon, hamachi, or albacore. The hand rolls are also generously portioned, and the Ikageso appetizer (deep-fried squid legs) is a standout with its curry and red pepper salts. As for rolls, I love the Rays, Bali-hi, and Sunset Dream. Even their miso soup, made fresh in-house, is something special! read more

We've been eating at Kaido's in Grass Valley CA for about 10 years and enjoy it very much. The waitress(s) are fun and provide some of the best service. Kos & Kaoru are the most humble and caring owners you will ever meet. We went on a 7500 mile vacation this year up North into Alaska and decided to eat Sushi out as often as possible, some of the cities were Sun Valley ID, Missoula MT, Whitehorse Yukon (twice), and Prince George BC. The flavor of the different dishes are sometimes hard to compare, but we found Kadio's Sushi Rolls and Tempura to be the best. Our first time at this restaurant and first thing I notice is that the menu is totally different than what's on line??? The atmosphere is fine and the servers are prompt and friendly, even on a busy Friday night. The food was just fair. Small portion Poke plate for 25 dollars with rice and soup all extra. Not great. Tempura was just ok. Veggies were kinda hard, so also not great. Two shrimp, 4 or 5 veggies 16 bucks. Main St roll was supposed to be shrimp, avocado, etc. The only rolls with shrimp in them were the end rolls. The rest had no shrimp. 19 dollars, no extras. No brown rice, only white, not great for me. Smallest miso soup bowl in the universe. Wasabi was good, you only get the smallest dab and same for the ginger. We asked for more and they did bring more. I also tried some type of butter scallop dish that was VERY bitter and not much fun at all 18 dollars. I've been coming to Kaido for years. One of my most favorite sushi places to come to. The menu has things that the seasoned sushi lover can find & other yummy dishes that other restaurants don't offer or can't nail like Kaido. Like the amaebi, it's a "sweet shrimp" nigiri (raw shrimp) with a side of the shrimp head fried. I know Whoa, right? It's not the sweet shrimp part that my mouth waters for, it's that crispity chrunchity fried shrimp head. Perfection! Not for the seafood amateur* And they don't offer it all the time but when they do, I'm in & not into sharing. The sake selection is pretty killer too. The service is always sweet. Honestly not sure why some other sushi spots have more stars than Kaido. There are only 2 sushi places in GV/NC I get down with & this is one of them. read more

I have only gotten take out and their offerings never disappoint. I went to sushi training and I could never make anything near the level Kaido has; its flat out embarrassing. One of the trademarks of inspiration is when you eat something and then are completely and fanatically determined to replicate it so you can have that item whenever you want. Went to Kaido for a spontaneous date night and it was amazing. Our server was very friendly. We ordered one appetizer, two rolls, and a bottle of sake. Everything came out timely and was delicious! We love this more traditional style Japanese sushi restaurant. Definitely recommend for out of town era, just know you need to make a reservation. read more

Ventured back here on Labor Day weekend. Was pleased we were able to get a table reservation at the last minute. The food was delicious as usual, and the wait staff was extremely helpful. They noted half our party was vegetarian and cautioned us about the Teriyaki sauce. At first I was saddened to hear their sauce was cooked with chicken, as it was the perfect topping for the Forest Roll. Luckily, I ordered the roll without the sauce anyways, and it was still awesome. Crispy tempura style mushrooms wrapped in rice, topped with avocado and walnuts. It was lovely. Besides that, our party ordered the Rockabilly Roll from the special menu (Check out my photos). Which I couldn't eat as it had eel, but it looked amazing. Kaido definitely has presentation down pat. We also got the usual Twiggy roll and then the vegetable tempura. The onion, carrot and sweet potato are my favorite. I could probably go without the tofu and mushrooms. We also had hot sake with our meal, which was pleasing. That night they even offered samples of their poke, which our friends found to be very tasty. Grass Valley has a few nice, evolved places to eat. Not exactly a mecca of culinary innovation. What a treat this place is to the area. For Grass Valley - this is something to be excited about. A nice, elegant, simple atmosphere. Well poised and attentive servers.. and fine fine sushi. I had the Sashimi with spicey beef.. it was so good that a week later I couldn't help but order the same thing: The sashimi was wonderful, think, and just.. nice. The spicey beef was a whole other trip. And quite powerful.. by my second time at the combo I learned to leave the beef till last as to not destroy my pallet - but it's damn good don't get me wrong. This sushi restaurant is never a let down! I love the chefs sampler as well as the sake sampler. They have roll specials that always sound great, so the kitchen does have some fun and a very nice traditional sushi selection as well. They almost always need reservations but I've called an hour ahead and gotten in. They don't have a bar you can sit at, which I do tend to like at other sushi restaurants but it's not a big deal. Service has always been attentive and friendly. I really like this spot, many sushi places in Nevada City are great and each has is own feel. This one is not pretentious, not totally casual either.
