This place was a recommendation from my son who lives in Grass Valley. Once we got to the restaurant the waitresses were very nice with big smiles and welcoming g attitudes. We were seated promptly and drink orders were filled. The ambiance was very quiet with light music playing in the background, we could hardly hear the other patrons conversations. The waitress gave a few minutes to make our decisions and we placed our orders: I ordered the Sushi Deluxe My wife ordered the Unagi with rice My son ordered a large Sushi Bowl My sons' wife ordered a large Sashimi Bowl To my surprise ALL the food was devoured as we sat there sharing stories and having light conversation. Our waitresses made sure all water glasses were full and that our Tea Cups were always full. I did not expect such a nice SUSHI Place outside of the San Francisco Bay Area. My wife and I grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area where the Sushi Places are only trumped by JAPAN. Have been enjoying sushi here for almost 15 years. Continues to be delicious and we are lucky to have one of the best sushi houses in a large radius. Over the years, the overall vibe has gone from a quiet classy experience to a more casual atmosphere with less attentive wait staff. Just went in the other day and WOW! The prices have increased DRAMATICALLY ! 3 rolls, a house salad and a small saki was 150$ with the tip. Toki is as wonderful as always and greats everyone with a smile. My husband and I recently celebrated our 32nd wedding anniversary at Sushi Q. We've lived in this area for more than 25 years and had never been there, for some strange reason. Suffice to say, we will definitely return. A calm, comfortable space, attentive (but not obsessive) servers, and beautifully presented sushi offerings. The fish is perfectly cut and screamingly fresh. We started with miso soup, very tasty. Then we shared a coyote roll, which was very nice. After that, we had several orders of nigiri sushi. Most notable from the selections I enjoyed was the toro salmon, just melted in my mouth. Sushi is a pretty spendy sort of a meal, so we can't really go out for it very often. That being said though both my girlfriend and I got violently ill earlier after a few rolls and some nigiri. Tbh my stomach is churning again atm.... What a pleasant dining experience! We were immediately seated by our hostess (thanks to our reservation). Water quickly appeared, and our server was ready to start our order. We were guests of friends who have been regulars for 20+ years. One is vegan and the other vegetarian. They had their order memorized: edamame, miso soup, house salad, sushi in the soy pouches, and a vegetarian roll. We added maki, yellow fin, and ahi. Went again for dinner and brought a friend with us! The Sushi was as good as it was last time the sushi Rice was cooked perfectly! I stand corrected by Kumiko san! My last review mentioned the sushi rice was cooked with vinegar, sugar and hon dashi which is a soup base. What they really use to make the sushi rice Umai is the Konbu (sea kelp) dashi. Another mistake I made was saying they served Masago and I am happy to say the use the real thing which is tobiko for toppings and nigiri. Sooo good! This is our favorite place! read more

I don't often leave yelp reviews but they deserve one. Sushi-Q is the most special place. I worked there starting at age 15 as a dishwasher, and have worked there on and off in different positions for many years. They treat their employees so kindly and are a wonderful family owned business to work for. I think one of the highest compliments a restaurant can receive is when ex employees still love eating there, many years later. It's still my favorite place to go for a date night and it's hands down my favorite restaurant in all of Nevada county. I have so much love for this place, and had to share! Had to ask for a spoon for my miso soup. It's a letdown when you're sitting at a nice restaurant with white linen on the table and the server doesn't follow through. Quite terrible all around. The service was friendly but useless overall. Took an amazingly long time to get tea. The server said the first batch was cold and she said the second would be better. Why bother serving it? Seriously, if you know that your product isn't ready, why the heck are you presenting it to me?!? Took an hour to get a hot cup of tea from this restaurant. Later on, the server pandered to another table of very nice people she knew as they shared their stories of harvesting weed. The entire restaurant has a "sour-urine-funk" smell. My hunch is that it's reasonably clean, but they're in dire need of a better HVAC system with a dehumidifier. Our Tempura app was so poorly executed. The batter was bland and terribly undercooked. It never developed a golden brown crisp, just a white veil of deep fried paste. Absolutely no flavor, not even on the shrimp. Really, eat child's art paste next time. It's cheaper and won't leave you with grease-induced dysentery. My Tako nigiri was massacred with the most crude knife skills known to any sushi chef. It was entirely too thick, and cut in an odd size that made it impossible to eat with the rice. Rookie work. My first roll was ok, unmemorable with a lack of polished execution. It was heavily dressed in a mayo sauce. Heavily. Our other roll featured that same awful tempura shrimp inside of it. This time, as I bit into the roll, I got the sensation of biting into a bungee cord that had an essence of fish. Yuck! On the upside, the rice was well-formed and had a great texture. Overall, this is quite easily the worst sushi expensive I've had. It even beats a horrible discount sushi-boat experience I had in Boise. Better bets: Kaido Sushi in Grass Valley, or Sushi in the Raw in Nevada City (get reservations NOW or you'll never sit). read more
