    Hibachi grilled toro

A big Mahalo out to Ace Hardware Kaimuki- not only are they the few remaining places that bothers to have Hibachi grills that don't cost a fortune , but they also were willing to help me out building mine since I didn't have any tools to do it. Worked like a charm -- ( service very hard to find now a days). The local hardware store is a rate bird indeed.

    Rubbing Alcohol

Decided to go cruzing today and look for Lysol spray. My friend said sometimes Hardware stores carry them hit or miss. I know it's going to be hard to find but I'll try it anyway . Didn't find the Lysol but like everywhere else lots of hand sanitizer and face masks. But to my surprise I found rubbing alcohol at this Ace Hardware in Kaimuki. Normally every place is sold out ever since this Pandemic or hard to find good to know . Of course I try to support local but if I can find something that City Mill don't have I need to buy it . Be safe

Need a key? If it's something that is pretty common, you'll probably be okay coming to Ace Hardware to make a duplicate key, but if it's something out of the ordinary, may I suggest you go to a shop that specializes in locks & keys. My recent visit to Ace Hardware store up in Kaimuki was out of convenience, as I had the unfortunate experience of having my key break in my deadbolt lock at my house. Luckily for me, I was able to removed the busted key from the lock cylinder, but had to get a replacement key, and that's how I ended up at Ace Hardware. Upon walking into the store I was greeted right away, and upon presenting my house key (not the broken one) to they clerk, they put my key into this machine which appeared to scan the image of my key, he takes out my key, then he puts in the key blank to have the machine cut a new duplicate key. Service was fast & friendly, and the price for a key cut was reasonable. Later that evening I went home to test out the new key.......as unlucky as I can be, the new key was so badly cut that they key could not even slide into the lock cylinder. Aiyah! Went back to the Kaimuki Ace Hardware the next morning & explained to them my dilemma, they were apologetic, and promptly refunded my money as they told me the key blank they used to make my new duplicate key maybe wasn't the correct blank. I appreciated their honesty, and no complaints here.......the only bad about the whole experience is the time I lost going back & forth to get my key issue resolved. Upon getting my money, I ended up heading down the road, and going to Saltz Lock & Safe. Yes, I paid about a dollar more for the new spare key, but with Saltz, Garans Ball Barans the new key worked! Lol!

Metal frame to clamp down the mop head
    Paul C.

Just the other day I received a text from a colleague instructing me to bring a new mop stick when I show up to work. Our old one with the rusted frame had finally seen its last days. Our spare mop, the one with a plastic mop stick, just doesn't clean well. I was in the Kaimuki area when I received the text and now on a mission. I wasn't really thrilled about driving to the Iwilei area to shop at either City Mill, Home Depot or at Lowe's during peak traffic hours. So, my first choice was Kaimuki City Mill, where I was impressed with ample parking and on how spacious the store was. But when checking out their mop section, I found some mop sticks, spare mop heads but no frame to connect the mop head and stick. I also found some mops with plastic handles. Thanks, but no thanks. I decided to seek help and had to walk around the store to look for staff assistance. I finally came across 2 staff who were talking amongst themselves. I explained my dilemma and the male staff walked back with me to the mop section. After confirming the lack of product on their shelves, he contacted his warehouse only to realize the item was of out of stock. I was disappointed when I exited City Mill and dreaded driving to the Iwilei area during busy rush hour so I reached out to my Yelp mobile app and came across Kaimuki Ace Hardware (KAH). It was only a few blocks away from City Mill so I hopped in my car and made my way here. Ace Hardware is an American hardware retailer's cooperative (a business that is owned and run jointly by its members who share the profit) that is headquartered in Illinois. They can be found nationwide plus also operating in 60 other countries. Although the parking lot was much smaller, I easily found a parking stall and made my way in. Despite KAH is a much smaller store, I was instantly greeted by the staff at the front. When asked if I was looking for anything in particular, I replied and was escorted to that aisle. Lo and behold, KAH had the mop stick with the metal frame in stock. ***happy dance*** Next, I was going to pick up some car air fresheners but was advised they don't carry any. I ended up grabbing an extra mop head and headed to the cashier. I was grateful the cashier was more alert as I didn't think much when he rang me up but when he focused how much the mop head was, I asked him to remove that item and my bill was substantially reduced. I was going to be reimbursed but I wasn't going to waste my company's money. I really appreciated the customer service extended to me, especially going the extra mile in emphasizing the cost of the mop head before making payment. I did find KAH to be a very compact hardware store with limited supplies but in my experience, the customer service exceeded my expectations, thus well deserving of a 5-star rating from me.

#Grateful for happyface Sophie so accommodating best customer service

We even had the original Sherwin-Williams paint can with the specs on it. You'd think that would make things simple. You would be wrong. Home Depot tried several times. To their credit, they at least noticed the color was drying wrong. But after enough "close enough" attempts to make me question my sanity and my walls, I finally went to the Sherwin-Williams on King Street. That's where I met a younger Polynesian guy with an incredible afro and the energy level of someone who actually enjoys helping people, which frankly feels rare these days. This guy spent OVER TWO HOURS trying to get the match correct. Testing, adjusting, remixing, checking the dry-down, trying again. At one point he literally told me, "I'm still not happy with it, give me a little more time." Which is exactly what you want to hear from someone matching paint, and not from your surgeon or airline pilot. The best part is I wasn't even buying some massive contractor order. I needed ONE quart. One. Tiny. Quart. And he still treated it like a mission of national importance. Eventually, he nailed it. But honestly, the thing that stood out most wasn't just the paint match. It was the attitude. The guy was smiling the entire time. Super upbeat, super patient, never once acted annoyed. And weirdly enough, everyone else there seemed genuinely cheerful too. Management included. The whole store felt relaxed and positive, which was especially noticeable after dealing with the emotional support zombies at their auto paint counterpart store recently. Sherwin-Williams (on King Street), seriously: you've got a keeper. Give that guy a raise, a promotion, or at minimum his own reserved parking spot. Excellent service. Excellent effort. And finally, walls that don't look like they were patched using leftovers from three different dimensions.

The other hardware stores did not carry Sherwin-Williams paint and I found out that there was a S-W Paint Store in Kapolei. This store is tucked away in the Kalaeloa Industrial Center of Kapolei and next to a Bikram Yoga Studio. All I had were the names of the colors and was easily overwhelmed trying to find the particular paint swatch. I figured it would be easier to ask CASEY (the only employee in the store at that time) to help me find it. He took down the names and quickly tracked them down and gave me the paint "swatches" in a very quick manner! No waiting at all! He was so thorough and courteous! I even had him looking for a color that I was certain was a Sherwin-Williams brand only to find out that it was a Benjamin Moore product. When asking about how effective those apps are that give you an idea of how a color will look in your room is he informed me that colors change throughout the day, depending on how the sun or lack of it hits a room and hence, that app is probably not the best way to decide on a paint color. He suggested buying the smallest size paint and having them tint it to my specifics (the paint was only $7-8.00 a can) and then applying that color onto the wall in a medium size patch and see how I liked it at different times of the day. Great advice!! I made the "mistake" of painting a wall in my house three years ago without a sample paint and I haven't been happy with it since then. Hubby isn't thrilled either since I'm asking him to re-paint that wall again. Either that or go with one of Sherwin-Williams's preferred contractors (listed in their showroom). Either way, I'm pretty sure I've narrowed down my color choice down to 3-4 colors and I'm a ba-zillion percent sure that THAT is the right color. Again, SUPER GREAT customer service from Casey!!
