    Hibachi grilled toro

A big Mahalo out to Ace Hardware Kaimuki- not only are they the few remaining places that bothers to have Hibachi grills that don't cost a fortune , but they also were willing to help me out building mine since I didn't have any tools to do it. Worked like a charm -- ( service very hard to find now a days). The local hardware store is a rate bird indeed.

    Rubbing Alcohol

Decided to go cruzing today and look for Lysol spray. My friend said sometimes Hardware stores carry them hit or miss. I know it's going to be hard to find but I'll try it anyway . Didn't find the Lysol but like everywhere else lots of hand sanitizer and face masks. But to my surprise I found rubbing alcohol at this Ace Hardware in Kaimuki. Normally every place is sold out ever since this Pandemic or hard to find good to know . Of course I try to support local but if I can find something that City Mill don't have I need to buy it . Be safe

    Ace is the place?

Need a key? If it's something that is pretty common, you'll probably be okay coming to Ace Hardware to make a duplicate key, but if it's something out of the ordinary, may I suggest you go to a shop that specializes in locks & keys. My recent visit to Ace Hardware store up in Kaimuki was out of convenience, as I had the unfortunate experience of having my key break in my deadbolt lock at my house. Luckily for me, I was able to removed the busted key from the lock cylinder, but had to get a replacement key, and that's how I ended up at Ace Hardware. Upon walking into the store I was greeted right away, and upon presenting my house key (not the broken one) to they clerk, they put my key into this machine which appeared to scan the image of my key, he takes out my key, then he puts in the key blank to have the machine cut a new duplicate key. Service was fast & friendly, and the price for a key cut was reasonable. Later that evening I went home to test out the new key.......as unlucky as I can be, the new key was so badly cut that they key could not even slide into the lock cylinder. Aiyah! Went back to the Kaimuki Ace Hardware the next morning & explained to them my dilemma, they were apologetic, and promptly refunded my money as they told me the key blank they used to make my new duplicate key maybe wasn't the correct blank. I appreciated their honesty, and no complaints here.......the only bad about the whole experience is the time I lost going back & forth to get my key issue resolved. Upon getting my money, I ended up heading down the road, and going to Saltz Lock & Safe. Yes, I paid about a dollar more for the new spare key, but with Saltz, Garans Ball Barans the new key worked! Lol!

Metal frame to clamp down the mop head
    Paul C.

Just the other day I received a text from a colleague instructing me to bring a new mop stick when I show up to work. Our old one with the rusted frame had finally seen its last days. Our spare mop, the one with a plastic mop stick, just doesn't clean well. I was in the Kaimuki area when I received the text and now on a mission. I wasn't really thrilled about driving to the Iwilei area to shop at either City Mill, Home Depot or at Lowe's during peak traffic hours. So, my first choice was Kaimuki City Mill, where I was impressed with ample parking and on how spacious the store was. But when checking out their mop section, I found some mop sticks, spare mop heads but no frame to connect the mop head and stick. I also found some mops with plastic handles. Thanks, but no thanks. I decided to seek help and had to walk around the store to look for staff assistance. I finally came across 2 staff who were talking amongst themselves. I explained my dilemma and the male staff walked back with me to the mop section. After confirming the lack of product on their shelves, he contacted his warehouse only to realize the item was of out of stock. I was disappointed when I exited City Mill and dreaded driving to the Iwilei area during busy rush hour so I reached out to my Yelp mobile app and came across Kaimuki Ace Hardware (KAH). It was only a few blocks away from City Mill so I hopped in my car and made my way here. Ace Hardware is an American hardware retailer's cooperative (a business that is owned and run jointly by its members who share the profit) that is headquartered in Illinois. They can be found nationwide plus also operating in 60 other countries. Although the parking lot was much smaller, I easily found a parking stall and made my way in. Despite KAH is a much smaller store, I was instantly greeted by the staff at the front. When asked if I was looking for anything in particular, I replied and was escorted to that aisle. Lo and behold, KAH had the mop stick with the metal frame in stock. ***happy dance*** Next, I was going to pick up some car air fresheners but was advised they don't carry any. I ended up grabbing an extra mop head and headed to the cashier. I was grateful the cashier was more alert as I didn't think much when he rang me up but when he focused how much the mop head was, I asked him to remove that item and my bill was substantially reduced. I was going to be reimbursed but I wasn't going to waste my company's money. I really appreciated the customer service extended to me, especially going the extra mile in emphasizing the cost of the mop head before making payment. I did find KAH to be a very compact hardware store with limited supplies but in my experience, the customer service exceeded my expectations, thus well deserving of a 5-star rating from me.

#Grateful for happyface Sophie so accommodating best customer service

Today it was a simple just some acetone as I wanted to wipe off paint and the basic store bought stuff just won't do it and as small as this shop seems to be they do have it all and was very easy to find than the larger ones as it literally took me a minute to find it and a minute to reach to the register without a wait and was on my way faster than taking the needed pics to show off this great Kailua location. If needed staff is very easy to find here but as I knew exactly what I wanted it was okay and parking in the back is spacious with short walks to the automatic doors is just nice to have a quick spot to find exactly what you need without being lost as I finished my project so easily. Thank you!

Manager Maryann picked up the phone I tried to ask her the same question about the item I was looking for she had the same rude attitude not willing to address my concern nor providing me with any customer service. I asked Maryann to speak to the GM, She told me to call back at 7:30 and then hung up the phone not providing me with information on what I called the store for. Called the following morning to speak to the GM and Maryann had picked up and said he is not in and don't know when he will be in, so I had asked her, why did you tell me to call at 7:30am to speak to the GM she replied " are you calling to make trouble? your a trouble maker! stop making trouble you GIRL!" and hung up. This is not how any customer should be treated at all, I hope that Mike Cunningham the president and CEO of this store takes this kind of treatment from his staff towards possible customer's serious.

What better way to support local, then to shop during their anniversary! Today I came in for a roll of weed blocker fabric. To my surprise, they had a variety to choose from. In the past, I've been able to find a number of items, simply because the aisles are well labeled with signage. Shelves are stocked neatly. And if I can't find something, I normally encounter a friendly customer service specialist, eager to help me :) I especially appreciate the native Hawaiian plants that are available for sale in the garden section. Shout out to Kayli for all her help last night…read more So the other day I was cooking dinner for my dad & when I went into his refrigerator, I noticed it didn't seem that cold? But when I checked the freezer, it appeared that it was working properly. I asked my dad if the fridge was okay? And he in turned told me that it was, so I really didn't think anything more of it. Several days later, after shopping for some food for my dad, when I was putting some produce items into his fridge, I again asked him if the refrigerator was okay, then he finally told me "maybe something was wrong". I rechecked the settings on the refrigerator, rechecked the vents from the freezer, seals on the door, and everything appeared to be okay. Being that my dad's refrigerator was 11 years old (I remembered buying it in 2014), I guess it was time for a replacement. Luckily for me, November has rolled around and since a lot of folks will be feasting towards the end of November, "Black Friday" sales have started & Home Depot has their big "Black Friday" sales event for the entire month of November. At first I went to Best Buy, because I purchased the refrigerator & stove from there back in 2014, but upon arriving there, I couldn't get any help so I left the store & headed across the street to Home Depot. Upon lookin' at the fridges, I found a fridge that would fit in my dad's kitchen space & looked for a clerk to help me. Luckily I came across Kayli, and she was so helpful in processing my transaction. Timing was just right for me, as the delivery of the refrigerator was FREE due to the Black Friday sales, and I only had to pay $50 bucks for the removal of the old refrigerator. The refrigerator I purchased was in stock, so Saturday they will deliver it to our house. How's that for great service???!!! Much MAHALO Home Depot, and Kayli! You really helped us out of jam, as I realky needed a running refrigerator, especially since Thanksgiving is just around the corner!

Founded in 1899 by…read moreChun Kun Ai, there are presently 8 locations: Honolulu, Kaimuki, HI Kai, Kaneohe, Mililani, Pearl City, Waianae, and Ewa Beach. Chung Kun Ai was its president until 1961; then his youngest son, David managed it until 1991; and now David's son, Steven, serves as President and Chairman, assisted by his sister, Carol Ai May. City Mill HI Kai opened in 1993. It currently sells furniture, lumber, building materials, key making, propane refill, paint, jalousie cutting, electrical, tools, plumbing, window screen service, and more. How did it get its name? Prior to WWII, Chung Kun Ai owned the only rice mill in HNL and the largest in HI; hence, the name City Mill. After the war, City Mill focused mainly construction materials, but kept its name. While it cannot compare with the size of the big box retailer hardware stores and may be a little more in cost, we shop at city Mill due to the following reasons: * Local expertise and service. Their staff is friendly and knowledgeable with the local unique needs and can offer advice and guidance on projects that must meet local building codes. While there were periods of staff shortages during and after Covid, we've found staff in their red aprons to be very helpful. For specialized projects and making of keys, hubby tends to ask older employees or seasoned workers, as they seem to know more and appear to focus on details. And when I was browsing through the aisles, several red-apron dressed staffed asked if I needed any help. Nice! * Community focus. City Mill partners with local community organizations and provides donations based on request. Via the Chung Kun Ai Foundation City Mill has given back to University of HI agricultural programs, Palama Settlement, Food Bank, churches, scholarships, and more. * Convenient locations. With 8 stores across Oahu, City Mill offers convenient access for residents and saves time and gas to having to commute to the big box retailers. * Curated selection. While City Mill's inventory is not as diverse and expansive as the big box retailers, its product selection is carefully chosen to meet the needs of homeowners. If you're undecided on what you're looking for, it's a good starting place to see what is available. They even have educational toys and inflatable pools (seasonal). City Mill also carries some of the home storage containers and kitchenware that new venture that the Ai Family started called Simply Organized in Kahala Mall. The layout of the store is well organized. * In-store pick up and delivery. Online ordering with in-store pickup and delivery make it easier to get its product. They also use the latest technology to track their inventory. * Community events. City Mill's Facebook page features events and promotions that highlight their products and connect with the local community. There are garden expos for demos and meet vendors, Father's Day Keiki workshop, anniversary specials, how-to workshops, product expos, hurricane preparedness, and more. * Energy efficiency focus. City Mill has partners with HI Energy to promote energy-saving products and rebates, such as water-saving tips. Hours of operation are daily from 7a to 7p. Located in the ewa end of HI Kai Towne Center anchored by Costco, Ross Dress for Less, and McDonalds, lots of free parking available that are shared by its tenants. As City Mill is by itself, parking is always available, esp when you have to purchase bulky items. You can use a separate exit when purchasing garden supplies or lumber. It is assuring to have a City Mill a couple of miles from my home! No need to spend unnecessary time and gas to drive to town to a big box retailer! And with helpful customer service, City Mill provides us with our home improvement needs. Support local!
