I sat on the patio and was served right away When ordering tacos, you tell the server how many you want and are notified which ones you could get for 99 cents. You're given a ticket to give to the taco bar attendant and he puts them on your decorative plate. Afterwards, you choose what you want on your taco. Nice idea. I had a margarita which was pretty tasty but not strong enough for me to get a water. I had chips and salsa which were the perfect warmth. Came into town on Thursday to set up at the expo going down this weekend. Boss said to choose a place to eat at so I chose Kalaveras simply because it was on the other side of the street for us. Plus, my wife and I had been noticing Kalaveras more and more recently, so why not take this opportunity to give it a try? We were mostly ignored for a significant amount of time once the hostess sat us. We had to flag someone down and the older gentleman who was our waiter wasn't exactly going the friendliest individual either. Apparently some of our simple questions were annoying him. Anyway, I ordered their wet burrito with red sauce and a michelada to wash it all down with. Good news is the michelada was delicious. Tangy, spicy, and refreshing. Nothing like a lunch beer to get the appetite going. Bad news? Yet another chain serving up Americanized Mexican food. Sterile and safe. Nothing memorable. This is definitely Mexican cuisine for the crowd who thinks black pepper is too spicy. Vibe wise, not really my type of environment to drink and hang out at, but it's loungey. Saw the Taco Tuesday sign for .99 tacos and we had to run in!!! Walked into a wall of flowers and cute signage. Flowers are also all over the women restroom. We were informed that the tacos were only the meat and tortilla with a salsa and vegetable bar for the tacos to be garnished with. We each ordered 6 tacos and were stuffed!!! Condiment bar had spicy guacamole!! So bomb. Habanero salsa so bomb!! A medium salsa- so flavorful and the poco de gallo. There were pickled onions, cactus, limes, pickled carrots, jalapeños, cilantro, and etc. Each taco had a very good portion of meat, more than expected for .99 tacos. Well worth it. I don't know if the chips and salsa are extra charge or not and if upon request of not. One day I went and we got it during taco Tuesday and another day we didn't. Came to celebrate a friends bday Saturday night, the aesthetic and the ambiance inside was definitely a great place to get out Saturday night started. We ordered a molcajete and 2 mango margaritas. The food and drinks were delicious! The service in the beginning was good but as the night progressed our server was swamped and didn't check on us for a while. Our food sat at the table for almost 10 min since no cutlery was given to us. I waited 20 minutes after our food was served before I asked for the tortillas that came with our order. We ordered margarita flights and 20 minutes later were told we can close our tab or wait since the bar was waiting for the flight glasses. Really good sit down Mexican option across from LB Convention Center. In itself, choosing a sit down place when half a dozen taco trucks are just down the block can be depressing. Sometimes you have to make a sacrifice for a business meal. Fortunately, the food was delicious. The Lomo Saltado was well prepared and had lots of flavor. Service was great too, never an empty beverage and they even, "at least the waiter said this was the case" made some fresh habanero salsa for me when I asked for something a little spicier than the first salsa that was served. I really wanted to love Kalaveras in Long Beach. The ambiance looked beautiful online, and I was especially excited to sit under the lovely arches on the side of the restaurant, it's one of the main reasons I chose this spot to celebrate my birthday. I'm introverted and don't enjoy being in the middle of the crowd, so those semi-private tables looked like the perfect setting for a comfortable meal. We arrived at 2:30 p.m. on a Friday. The place was mostly empty, and there were at least three of those arched tables available. I kindly asked to be seated at one of them, and the waitress told me no, those are only for parties of four or more on weekends. I explained we were just two people and that it was my birthday, and she still refused. I asked again later and was told the same thing. Meanwhile, those tables remained completely empty the entire time we were there. Instead, we were seated at a table in the back next to where the servers go in and out, right by the kitchen. My view was of clashing dishes and bustling staff, not the vibe I had hoped for. It honestly put a damper on my entire experience. I didn't even feel like ordering dessert anymore, even though I had my heart set on their churros. To be fair, the food and drink were great, I ordered the enchiladas verdes and a margarita flight, both of which were delicious. But I just couldn't enjoy them in that setting. It's frustrating because the restaurant easily could have made an exception. It wasn't busy, and we weren't asking for anything unreasonable. A little empathy or flexibility would have made a huge difference, especially on a day that was meaningful to me. I won't be returning. For the actual entree, we got the entree Birria Tacos and Mole Enchilada. One entree Birria taco was the size of the 3 happy hour size tacos. The meat was juicy and had a small side of consome on the side to drizzle on. The Enchilada Mole was great! This place has a great happy hour! I was walking in the area and stumbled upon this place. I ordered the three tacos gobernador, and the three chicken taquitos dorados to snack on. Both of the dishes were delicious! The happy hour is from 3pm-7pm so there is plenty of time to enjoy the delicious food. After a disappointing experience at Kalaveras, my husband and I decided to give it another chance since it's so close to home. This time, we were lucky enough to have Alberto as our server, and he truly turned our evening around. Alberto was attentive, professional, and genuinely kind, making us feel like his top priority even though he was clearly managing a full section. It's not often you find a server who can make you reconsider a place you had written off, but Alberto did just that. While I'm still not fully sold on Kalaveras as a whole, Alberto's exceptional service is making us reconsider, and that says a lot. Anyways, we got the Kala Burrito ($18) which came with skirt steak, fries, guac, Monterrey jack cheese, and pico de gallo wrapped in a tortilla. This was just average. There wasn't any flavors that stuck out, and their salsa left a buzzing feeling in both of our mouths after eating it which we both didn't like. We didn't like our meal at all but were starving so ate all of it. Service: Below average I'd say. Our waiter came, we ordered, he left and only came back to check that we got our food. Then he came back to ask us how the food was, knew we weren't happy and then only came around after we called for the check. I remember him asking if we wanted something else, but I said no and that was that. I asked another server for ketchup and she totally forgot about us. The waiter also asked me if I wanted rice and beans and I said yes, however, they did not inform me that it's an EXTRA $8. It's definitely a RIP OFF if you get the rice and beans considering the cost. I wish they told me how much it costs because it sounded like it was free with it.... The tacos were amazing otherwise. Not sure why the tortilla seems doughy, I asked someone else if it seemed that way for their burrito and they said yes it was doughy too. Sauces taste good. The asada fries and nachos were actually really good but the serving sizes were medium small perhaps barely enough for two to share. Seems like they are exactly worth $8 each. The burritos on the other hand are definitely not worth the $16 due to a doughy textured tortilla and lack of seasoning being compensated for decent sauce and the burrito is a little on the small side for that price. Decided to try this spot because I love Mexican food and I had heard a lot about this restaurant. It's at the Long Beach Pike so you'll have to pay for parking either in a lot or meter on the street. It was pretty busy when we went and we waited about an hour and a half for a table for 8. There was live music and also regular music playing so it can be a bit loud inside. We ended up getting a pitcher of the El Chupacabras Margarita which was delicious! It was my favorite. I also tried the Pina Con Chile margarita which was also very good! The food was just a decent meal overall, but I really loved the chimichurri sauce that came with empanadas. It's way better than your classic chimichurri. I ended up using it on my lomo saltado too. Shrimp Ceviche - not really a fan of shrimp ceviche because shrimp doesn't absorb the ceviche juices too well. And it's on a plate so hard to scoop up and juice Guacamole - guac is always great Empanadas - we tried all 3 of the empanadas but if I were to do it again, I'd get just the spicy beef Lomo Saltado - not sure I really like their twist to the traditional lomo, but the chimichurri made it all better. The aji verde is already all mixed in and that made the fries super soggy. I was a fan of Kalaveras since they opened their first location in San Pedro so decided to come and give Thais newer location a visit. The staff was extremely welcoming specially our waiter whom was very attentive at all times. The food was "okay" and didn't have much of an excitement to it. If I'm being completely honest it's not like their other location, the Mexican seasoning just wasn't there for me. Had their chicken enchiladas which comes with who enchiladas, rice and beans. Their queso fundido was probably the highlight of my dinner, the waiter was kind to give us both flower and corn tortillas.
