Wow! So I came here for their happy hour specials and I think they do the trick! The happy hour menu items are fun sized compared to the full priced entree so that is something to consider. I made a reservation for this lunch with my friends, and happy hour is only at the bar top or high tables. The food was soooo good so I'd recommend just getting the entree next time unless you only have a stomach for the mini happy hour food. You may find parking in front of kalaveras or on pine Avenue which is metered parking. read more

My friend and I decided to go to Kalaveras by the Pike for Cinco de Mayo. We chose this location because we knew it would be lively and the food is amazing! We knew there was going to be a wait so that was no issue, we got in pretty quickly even with it being 30 people in front of us. We were served by a young lady named Kassandra and as sweet as she was she just did not have the best time management skills. We barely got our first drink because she was rushing and just wanted to run off after bringing us water. I had to stop her and just order the drinks because I knew I wasn't going to see her for another 30 mins. She then took our food order and then NEVER offered us a second drink. While she was next to me taking the other tables orders I had ask "can you please come over here when you're done?" & that's when I was able to get another drink. Again, super sweet young lady but just not managing her time wisely. We waited over 30 mins for a check and then I said no more!! I went to the host and asked her to close me out because why am I waiting close to an hour to be closed out???? I've worked in countless busy restaurants so I knows it's possible for her to be on top of her sections more. read more

Excellent Mexican food. We had read mixed reviews but our experience was top notch. We went right when they opened (11am) and initially the service seemed a little slow but eventually was very attentive. Server provided multiple refills and good overall service. A cute little establishment! It was during happy hour. The drink prices seemed high for happy hour, but I was not disappointed when I actually got my drink. It was yummy! The ambiance was so cute! Someone had a birthday and the entire restaurant joined in because of how the server announced it! It was not a timid or half effort, he went all in. The tacos were amazing! I been to Kalaveras multiple times. But lately the service and food is off. I went once and there was a line, the host just told me it was a 30 minute wait time, okay, she didn't asked my name or anything to reserve the table so I left. I went back and before going I reserved a table because each time is full. We go there at 6:10 and got seated, it was not crowded so we were like great, We were ready so we ordered with Andres the food and drinks immediately, and ordered 2 sex on the beach witch took, Dr. We noticed that people who were seated after us received their drinks before we did, and we ended up waiting about 34 minutes just to get our drinks. The food was not very tasty. My birria tacos were not good, the meat was dry and tasted overcooked. The asada in the loaded fries was also not very good. Other tables were getting their drinks much faster. Once we finally got ours, I asked another server (the one who ended up helping us) about the delay. I told her that we had ordered drinks and a Dr Pepper and that it had been about 35-40 minutes total. She checked on the drinks, which was confusing since other tables that were seated after us had already received theirs. Andres only checked on us twice, once at the beginning to take our order and once at the end. We wanted to order more Sex on the Beach drinks before happy hour ended since we arrived almost an hour early. I told another server with red hair, and she said that in order to order more, the glass had to be about halfway empty. I had no problem with that, but the issue was that the drinks were taking a very long time to come out, and by the time the other they would take the order Happy hour would have ended. Overall, the restaurant was not crowded, the service was not great, and the food quality seemed to have gone down. read more

Went in today wanting the lunch special. Online it states they have their lunch special M-F from 11-3. We went around 11:45 and they told us they no longer do the lunch special. They also said they discontinued that discount 2 years ago.. which makes no sense since it is still on their website very disappointing thinking we were gonna spend $15 but ended up spending $22 and didn't even get the drink :( we are visiting from another state and it was very saddening. read more

The food was absolutely amazing! You could tell it was fresh and everything tasted phenomenal! Our waiter Kevin was super helpful and sweet. There was no wait time because we came in early and the food came out fast. Everything came out hot even the chips! The horchata was amazing and I definitely recommend. Great place to get drinks. All the drinks were delicious! It's a cool vibe with Bad Bunny on repeat, lol. Service was a little slow, it is a bar environment so you have to kind of expect that. Stopped on for drinks. Nice bar. Got 2 slushies. Watermelon and mango. So good@@ service is fast and friendly. Onsite nearby Pike parking. The slushies reminds me of Vegas margaritas at the Fremont Casino. This location is on a corner close to the convention center. Fun place, good times! read more

We celebrated our friend's BIG birthday, and the team at Kalaveras made the party special for her!! The service was attentive, prompt, friendly and when they brought out the birthday song and treat that made the night!! The food is DELICIOUS, the birria and mushroom tacos-YUM!!! This is my third time at this location and let me tell you....i am extremely underwhelmed by the service and the food. I think each time I would've enjoyed the food more if the service was actually attentive. I am very confused by everyone else's experience with the service. My most recent time giving it a final go, today, was utterly terrible. I never received utensils or a napkin, even after asking my waiter. We ordered a nacho appetizer and I had no way to clean my hands. I finally just found the server cart myself in the back and stole a stack of napkins because my hands were covered in beans. My waiter never returned to refill my water and when we were ready to leave was nowhere to be found to close out the check. We finally went to the front of the restaurant to close out and the waitress could not find our waiter so the manager had to do it. We never received small plates to share the appetizer and it was some of the worst service I have had at a restaurant. Keep in mind this is a Thursday night at 9-10pm. It was not busy! The food is ALRIGHT for the price. Much better Mexican restaurants in LB with better price points. I feel like I'm paying a premium to be neglected which ruins the experience of my food. They have a very limited menu for the location which is surprising. My favorite kalaveras is the one in Redondo beach. They have a much better ambience and menu. I don't think I'll be returning to the LB one again after giving it the benefit of the doubt 3 times. Shame it's right around the corner from my house. Yall should try Lola's on 4th. I wish I went there or to Tequila Jacks instead. This is the first time I've never left a tip at a restaurant because I was so disappointed with my experience here. read more

I was here at Long Beach for a conference and this place was conveniently located across the street from the convention center. I did not have high expectations, but I was blown away!! It's a popular place, and the food & service are great so we had a 40 minute wait. But it was absolutely worth it!! Food was fresh and well spiced. My favorite were the rice and beans...oh my gosh, the best I've ever had!! And the drinks were great too! I couldn't decide what to get, so I ended up getting the margarita flight. Even though I didn't love them all, I really enjoyed all the different and unique flavors. I was there over the weekend but they also have happy hour specials. Highly recommend this place! read more

My husband n I came for the first time last week, and will never go back. Our server "Ivone" not only stole money from my debit card by adding a $7 tip. But also charged us $8 for a side of fries. We got 2 sides. Which were very small, and paid $16. On the website a side of fries is $4. Our check came out to $68. Service was terrible, and I still tipped $13 cash (20%). Later to check my bank account n see I was charged $75. The restaurant refunded me the $7, but was very unapologetic. Really bad service, the people you hire represent the company. She stole from me twice, $8 in fries & $7 outside of the tab. & WHO KNOWS HOW MANY OTHER CUSTOMERS HAVE BEEN A VICTIM OF HER FRAUD. she felt awfully comfortable stealing from her job. This might be my favorite Kalaveras location. We came for my friends birthday and they did a great job with refilling our drinks and having our orders come out at a good rate. I ordered the shrimp tacos and a margarita pitcher for the table. The food is pretty good at all the Kalaveras locations I've been to so I admire the consistency. The little birthday dessert with the shots was also a nice touch. Love this place! read more

Our friends come here often and love it so we gave it a try. Made a reservation for 4 at 12p on a Sunday. Parking was the most annoying part of the day. Structure was full. But my friends found parking right on ocean and pine. We actually parked in front of Oceanside on ocean and walked down. We were seated in a big booth. Comfy with lots of room. There were several other big groups today. We had a nice server who took our drink orders right away. We didn't get the bottomless mimosas but our friends did. Said they were standard -nothing special. They got 4 refills in 90 min. Not bad but I wish they just put a bottle on the table for them. Would be easier for the server and the customer rather than waiting. Food was good! The Kala burrito and other dishes looked great. I had the breakfast tacos and I was a bit underwhelmed. And left a little hungry. The chili verde enchilada and the shrimp bowl looked amazing. I should have tried one of those. I've read they have a great happy hour and would like to come back and try it. I haven't been back to Solita tacos for brunch after we went once over a year ago. Came specifically for the soft serve margaritas and they were out whatever not great but not a big deal we waited for almost 30 minutes for anyone to come to our table that's WITH a reservation. It's a Thursday night not even that many people here all the servers and managers moving with no urgency. When someone finally came she wasn't apologetic or even very friendly. The food was delicious! I got the Pasta A La Diabla and my friend got the quesabirria tacos, they were both so good! Alberto was our server and he provided amazing service. We also got margaritas, I got the chupacabras which is hibiscus & a strawberry one and my friend got the Guavarita which is guava & pineapple. Both were delicious! Ive been to this Kalaveras a handful of times. The service is always good, from the waitress to the receptionist. I always get the pitcher of margarita which is really good but recently I think they skim on the alcohol. Some of the prices are ridiculous (5$ a taco) but I guess thats what happens when you are at the Pike. I have been to the one in Pedro which is more chill and laidback, but the one of the Pike gives club vibes. The only thing that sucks is that they pick an artist for the night (or at least thats what I got). They played El Alfa music videos for two hours straight I needed some variation in music. I was getting pretty annoyed just seeing El Alfa on the screen. read more

I was only seated on the bar side, which was extremely busy and noisy. Perhaps on the restaurant portion, but that looked pretty hoping' too.

It's clear the owners put a lot of thought and creativity into making their cocktails the centerpiece of the experience. That said, the execution didn't live up to the concept. The menu appears to rotate regularly, and while the drinks were certainly unique, most of the cocktails we tried were hit or miss. At roughly $22 per drink, I expected more balance and refinement. One cocktail started with flavors reminiscent of an Old Fashioned, but after the initial sip, the combination of bitters and fruit syrups created an unpleasant cough syrup like finish. We tried a mocktail as well, and it was mostly ice and soda water, with what seemed like a collection of syrups doing most of the heavy lifting. The drinks were creative, but many of the flavor profiles felt disjointed rather than intentional. The biggest issue, however, was the bar service and sanitation practices. I watched a bartender place a cucumber garnish into a glass using his bare hands, touching the entire garnish in the process. He then continued to take credit cards, cash, and other items before stuffing ice into additional drinks with his bare hands. Whether or not this technically violates health code standards, it certainly wasn't appetizing to watch and left a poor impression. Parking is another challenge. There is no dedicated parking, and unless you get lucky, expect to park several blocks away and walk. Overall, the atmosphere is a lot of fun and the cocktail menu is ambitious, but the drinks didn't justify the price point, and the sanitation concerns were hard to overlook. I wouldn't rush back, especially given the cost and parking difficulties.

I was able to make a late dinner reservation for Saturday night about a week prior - reservations are definitely encouraged, as the bar was full the entire time we were there. Gaining access to the speakeasy was actually not that difficult, just ring the doorbell of the ornate floral door, beneath the lone lantern in the alley behind El Barrio Cantina. Parking though was a nightmare. I only realized when paying the bill that the two establishments are one and the same, and I could have very likely parked in the designated spots for El Barrio customers. The whole bar is a mood - lighting is dim and you don't get to see much beyond your table, which is good for those seeking privacy. One thing to note is that because the dining space is so small and intimate, it does get quite loud. The appetizers we tried were all good, with izakaya flare as promised. The charred edamame was extremely addicting, smothered in garlic soy and just the right amount of spicy from chili arbor. The Okonomi corn dog was a clever spin on okonomiyaki, bonito flakes and all. Finally, both the Yuzu and Wagyu rolls were fresh and perfect size bites of their respective fishes. I wish I could have sampled their entire cocktail menu! All the drinks sounded novel and unique, and featured their specially cut crystal clear ice. My Yuzu Strawberry blended the smokiness of the mezcal with the tangy sweetness from yuzu and strawberry perfectly. And the Peated Highball I ordered as my nightcap has to be my new favorite drink, adding a boldness to the Japanese cocktail staple. Only reason I took a star off my review was the abrupt service. Our waitress was not subtle about needing our table for the next reservation, asking to clear our plates when there was still food on it, and closing our check early to the point that the bartender had to come and charge us again for our last drink. Despite that, still strongly suggest checking out Tokyo Noir. Long Beach sadly doesn't have many speakeasies, but the ones that are here are at the top of their game.

I would like to start off by saying this place has an amazing view and the hotel lobby is…read morebeautiful. The staff, however, was just okay. My cousins and I got there around 9 p.m. on a Friday. It was steady, but when we went up for our first drinks the bar itself wasn't very busy--there were maybe two people in front of us and two behind us. I mention this because it matters for context. My cousin ordered two drinks, one for him and one for his girlfriend. We were talking and at some point I looked at his girlfriend's drink, which was already about halfway empty, and noticed a fairly large crack running across one side of the glass, right above where the remainder of her drink was. I said, "Hey, your glass has a significant crack in it," and she laughed it off and said she noticed and was just drinking from the other side. I told her she absolutely should not do that because there was already a chip near the rim and there could potentially be tiny pieces of glass in the drink. I also told her we needed to bring it to the bartender's attention because that's a legitimate safety issue. Someone who isn't paying attention could cut their lip or potentially ingest glass. By the time we went back up to the bar, it had gotten quite a bit busier. We explained what happened to the bartender and he asked if we got the drink there. We said yes and pointed out the female bartender who had originally served us. He asked what the drink was, walked away, served a few other people, and eventually brought us a replacement. We were completely patient. We understood that the bar was busier at this point, we weren't rude, and we weren't upset about having to wait. What bothered me was when he handed us the replacement and said, "Next time you need to let us know when it happens." That response really rubbed me the wrong way. It's not the customer's responsibility to inspect a glass before drinking from it, and obviously we would have said something sooner if we had noticed it sooner. Considering the bar wasn't particularly busy when the drink was originally made, I was also surprised that a crack that significant wasn't noticed before the glass was served. I did take a photo of the bartender afterward because I wanted to make sure I could identify the person involved when I brought the interaction to management's attention. I spoke with the person who identified himself as the manager and explained what happened. He said he would speak with the bartender, but the response also felt somewhat dismissive given that my concern was ultimately about customer safety and how the situation was handled. Accidents happen and glasses crack. Had the drink simply been replaced and the concern acknowledged appropriately, I honestly probably wouldn't be writing this review. It was the combination of being served a visibly cracked glass, being told that we should have notified them sooner, and then feeling like the concern wasn't taken particularly seriously when I brought it to management that ultimately prompted me to leave an honest review. Beautiful property and amazing view, but the way this situation was handled definitely left a bad impression.

We stopped by late Saturday night and were able to snag an immediate walk-in at the bar at Hao Peng You, which is the intimate speakeasy portion of Midnight Oil. The decor definitely reminded me of my grandparents' house in Taiwan, with vintage, ornate wooden chairs, dragon/lion statue carvings, and even a historic century old marital bed that had been repurposed into a booth. The drinks were also VERY unique, with my favorite being Hua sheng (literally meaning peanut), which was crafted from a nostalgic childhood peanut milk drink. All our cocktails were crafted very well, to the point where I thought they were a bit on the lighter side since I couldn't really taste the alcohol. This section does get really busy though and only had one bartender who is making/serving drinks and taking orders, so do expect a bit of a wait. Overall, highly recommend checking out this vibey vintage Taiwanese-inspired speakeasy (that my inner history nerd was so excited about), and I'll definitely be back to try their food items as well as their two other bar/restaurant concepts!

Once reservations is made, you'll received an email with a password to enter. Enter phone booth and to connect to the inside and they'll open the door for you. We had the first reservations I believe they opened at 7pm. We were the first group to arrive. As it was my first time, we had ordered bar food and were waiting for it inside the main bar. So half an hour was used from our time limit. The speakeasy, dark and moody but perfect for the place. Special crafted cocktails by the bartenders which were great. They also have food as well, found out later. We did try the meat pie, which it was just ok. Basically an empanadas, the pickle veggies accompanied it was my favorite. It was good but nothing major to rave about. The drinks were quite nice and tasty. What they offered on the menu did have a load of good choices. Tables scattered throughout as well as bar seating. There's a piano which maybe used for live music. Overall, the moody speakeasy vibe was great. Friendly staff and bartender made some great drinks. What we had to snack on, the meat pie was just ok. I haven't been here often, but I *was* here right around when they opened, wherein I determined that the food ranged from quality but a bit overpriced, to just overpriced, a feeling I would still hold, generally speaking. Great vibe, solid service, but maybe a little pretentiously priced (and/or it's just stupid expensive to run a restaurant in this area, granted.) And with *super* pretentiously-priced cocktails, for how relatively simple they mostly are (if I'm gonna spend $18+ plus tip on a drink, I expect Baby Gee-level cocktails.) They also had an impressive wall of craft beer on tap, but also a bit pricey, especially compared to places not on 2nd street, so there was never a particular *draw*. But then I never actually finished reviewing it, because I'm super behind. Anyway, then also not particularly recently, they launched a happy hour, which at the time, especially for this particular part of Long Beach, was pretty stupidly good, with $5 decent sized smashburgers (6 with cheese, 10 with cheese and also fries), as well as $5 craft beer, pretty much all of them, including the fancy, exciting stuff (exciting if you're a nerd like me, the barrel aged stuff, for instance). They also had one specific half hour at the time, which I'd like to immortalize as a super fun idea, where one specific cheap but craft beer was some stupid price, I think like a dollar, but since they had a whole wall of rotating craft beer, a *different* specific cheap craft beer any given day. That's not relevant at all to my current review, but it was fun. Anyway, I still didn't write a review like a year ago when I took advantage of that happy hour, though I did take advantage of it a solid couple of times. Skip forward again to just a few weeks ago, I happened to be attending an event in the general area again, an event that was going to involve more alcohol than food and for which having a happy-hour-timed dinner in the area was going to be useful, so I figured I'd check out whether the happy hour was still there, and it was. At least as of a few weeks ago, the happy hour (3-6 weekdays) was still a thing, and it had gone up a whopping 55 cents per item. Ends up being effectively ~$17 plus tip for a quality smashburger, quality fries and a craft beer, though they didn't have as *many* of the fancy (barrel-aged or equivalent) stuff as they had the first time, they did still have some, and it was still $5.55 for any beer on draft they had. So happy hour wise, that's a pretty good price for this part of the country, I'd say. Obviously only since the burgers and fries *are* also absolutely quality burgers and fries. Not quite as wonderful as my gold standard smashburger at The Stache, perhaps, but still a great smashburger. My opinion on spending almost 20 bucks for what is effectively still just an old fashioned, hasn't changed, though. :p

I recently dined at Kalaveras with a group of friends, and unfortunately, the experience was extremely disappointing. The food was bland and uninspired--far from what we expected for a Mexican meal. One person in our group waited over 20 minutes for a glass of water, and when my meat arrived burnt, I sent it back, yet still had to pay for it. The manager was nowhere to be found, too busy playing bartender to address our concerns. Despite having a group of eight people from six different countries, the restaurant refused to split the bill, which led to a frustrating 40-minute process just to pay. Drinks were never refilled, and when we raised these issues with the server, she was dismissive, saying it wasn't her fault because she couldn't control the kitchen or bar. We were also told there was no chef on duty. To add to the chaos, we were served food with no silverware and had to track down someone in the kitchen to get some. My friends only visit the U.S. once a year and always look forward to having Mexican food, but this experience was so bad it left me embarrassed. I waited 20 minutes to speak to the manager about these issues, and even then, she didn't acknowledge me until we were leaving. She tried to get more details as we were walking out, but at that point, we were just ready to leave. Overall, it's clear that Kalaveras thrives on tourist traffic rather than repeat business. I am absolutely horrified and feel obligated to warn others about our recent Uber Eats order from Kalaveras Long Beach. What was supposed to be a simple dinner turned into a deeply disturbing and dangerous experience -- especially for children. We ordered the KIDS bean and cheese burrito, something you'd expect to be safe and straightforward. Instead, bit into what turned out to be a ROCK the size of a bean -- yes, a literal rock was inside the burrito. I am speechless and beyond upset. This is not just gross negligence -- it's a serious safety hazard. A child could have broken a tooth or choked or worse! The thought of what could have happened makes me feel sick. How does a rock even end up in food that's supposedly prepared in a professional kitchen? There was zero accountability when I reached out to the restaurant. No apology. No explanation. Just total indifference. For a place that presents itself as family-friendly, this is inexcusable. Needless to say, we will never order from Kalaveras again, and I strongly urge others to think twice -- especially if you're ordering for children. The complete lack of quality control and safety here is staggering. This was not a "bad meal" -- it was a dangerous experience. I'm filing a formal complaint with Uber Eats and considering contacting the health department. BE WARNED. This restaurant cannot be trusted with even the most basic food safety standards. read more

The place is beautiful with a festive vibe and fun great looking staff. 10 of us sat at a lounge table and enjoyed cocktails and appetizers that met expectations, asada nachos and dragon roll were the best. We started with a server that was pleasant and attentive, sorry I did not get her name and later we met Christine who also helped take care of us and she was a delight. The minute we met her she made us feel like friends with her amazing fun vibe, not only is she gorgeous with a dazzling smile, but a captivating personality. It was very busy Friday, but we got seated right away. Our server Christine was super attentive and sweet, took her time to make recommendations that were on point. The Governador tacos and quesabirrias did not dissapoint. She also suggested some drinks that were not in the menu and those hit the spot and were well presented. Taco Tuesday is able to accommodate you and give you a bar top experience despite having a full house. I'm finicky about my Old Fashioned and any spirit forward drink and it delivered. Overall, it was very disappointing, and for the $44 price tag for a single portion, it's frankly unacceptable. The previous Spanish restaurant at this location (Sevilla) was much better, but this dish reminds me of Sevilla in it's last days... which isn't good. It's why they went out of business. I love a great paella and have been to both Barcelona and Madrid, I've never been to the Sevilla in Costa Mesa or SD, but I'm curious now and need to go. I won't go back to Ole.

We wandered into the restaurant less than a half hour before closing and we were greeted warmly and treated like VIPs. Pacifico on tap, surprisingly delicious burgers, and what's this, tostones (crispy fried plantains) on the menu! Tostones were quite tasty topped with shredded meat. We had such a pleasant time that we returned Tuesday evening for beer and cocktails with my brother-in-law. Thank you for turning a sad occasion into a pleasant family reunion!

I forgot what the special was but when my husband ordered it they were out. Then the soup is the day was out also. The waiter ended up bringing my husband another soup on the house. Dinner was ok.. but the dessert was better. Breakfast the next morning was busy. Think most of the customers were eating before going to cruise ship. Break was decent... my waffle crossaint was good.

We got there and were able to get fast seating and a table. Portions were greats the food was honestly better than expected.i can't do spicy and this wasn't overly spicy. The cafe is very cute and quaint. It is very small and can only seat about 6 small tables, though they have about 4 or 5 tables outside on the sidewalk. The service was pretty good, the staff were very kind & friendly. The food was good, and the serving size was pretty hefty. I wouldn't mind coming back to try their other menu items.

The menu has a ton of really detailed options, each drink with its own depth. The menu changes seasonally but what doesn't change is the smoked old fashioned - a must-order. They smoke your drink in a glass container using applewood chips; it's quite a show and it also does make the drink much more enjoyable. Ask the bartender and they can also help guide you to a drink - I've done it a couple of times and always pleasantly surprised. Next up, the food! The hummus was very flavorful and paired with an amazing fluffy pita bread. The truffle fries were solid but the plate was HUGE, definitely needs a friend to share. The Nashville wings are the star of the show. I cannot stress this enough, this is worth a DRIVE for. The seasoning really does remind you of Howlin' Rays (the highest compliment) and the chicken is extremely crispy yet insanely juicy. The pickles and ranch that it comes with pairs so well. Do note that they are tossing it in pork fat, which enhances the depth but also makes it a little greasy at the end. I also wished they'd warn you this and offer to order it without it; especially for those who don't eat pork or for those trying to cut some calories. There's a happy hour menu too!!! So you can get drinks and food even cheaper. I cannot stop thinking about this place. It's such a sleeper. Head to Midnight Oil after a visit to continue your night.

I had recently had a very notable version of the same dish at a Canopy by Hilton in Washington DC, and unfortunately, this one did not measure up. The breading was average and the sweet chili aioli was poor. I asked for ranch instead, which was an improvement but still not great. The portion itself was fine. Service was solid and friendly! I'd rate the staff around a 4. Based on the food I had, the kitchen lands closer to a 2.5 to 3. Fine if you're already in the hotel and want something casual, but not an amazing choice for the fried seafood.
