Came here on a whim, only because the sushi place across the street was not open yet, and I was pretty hungry for some food. First funny thing you notice, is the white person wearing a barong (traditional Filipino dress). Nothing wrong with it obviously, just looks a little funny since it seemed kinda awkward and was a little too cheesy. Next thing you notice is the ambiance. Very clean for a Filipino restaurant. Everything is made to ordered as well, and not served under heat lamps, or buffet style like most places. Nice dining set layout as well, but what the hell is up with the butcher paper? What, are they expecting everyone to be 10 year olds, eating like slobs? For a nice place, it feels like you're eating in an outdoor picnic. Service was hit and miss, and seemed pretty disorganized. The manager of the of all people forgot to give us our water! We had a ask a couple times for it. The food though was not too bad. Ordered the Tocino plate since I haven't eaten breakfast yet, and tasted what you would expect from home. All the plates being served to everyone else looked pretty good and presentable. Celebrated my dad's birthday here with the family! I haven't had Filipino cuisine in a while so it was a nice change. I rarely eat Filipino food at home since my parents don't usually cook any of the dishes. We had reservations set for 7:30pm on a Saturday night. It was full, but not too extreme. Right away they started us off with waters and we just ordered different kinds of dishes for everyone to share with. Started off with calamari and it was good. Love calamari! We ordered the sizzling sisig, pancit, Crispy Pata, Lechon Kawali, Kare Kare, and Bicol Express along with white and garlic rice. Sisig was tender and good, but I felt it was missing a little bit of flavor. Crispy Pata and Lechon Kawali were good! Nothing really to complain about for them. Kare Kare lacked meat which was disappointing to me since we were all sharing for a party of ten. What made my night was the Bicol Express oh man! I definitely had to get seconds of those. My uncle felt it was lacking coconut milk, but I enjoyed it! We ended the night with dessert so we got buko pandan and halo halo! The mix mix was tasty and large enough to share with at least two people. My dad ended up leche flan for his birthday and they played the birthday song the had. It was funny cause the song played for a good three minutes.. It felt like we were listening to the extended version haha. Overall, the ambiance was alright and the service was nice! Food was actually good compared to other places I have gone to. I didn't get to try the pancit because I'm so used to eating it growing up that I'm currently sick of it. Come here for good Filipino Food! My parents dine at this place on random occasions without me, but since my sister was craving Filipino food we finally decided to give Kalesa a try! Kalesa which translates to "horse carriage" in Tagalog is a popular way to tour Manila even today! The restaurant is nice inside! The walls are decorated with different Filipino themed photos, and their servers are well dressed with the traditional FIlipiniana style tops. It's also roomy, so it's perfect for large groups or a family dinner! FOOD (We did family style) ------------------------- - Lumpia - Crispy fried goodness! I wasn't a fan of their dipping sauce for the lumpia, but you can ask them for banana ketchup/other sauce of your choice, they'll be happy to deliver! - Ukoy (Fried shrimp fritters) - This is one of my favorite things to snack on, and was surprised to find it on Kalesa's appetizer menu! It's crispy and tasty esp. when dipped in their garlic vinegar sauce! I'd have to say it's the best ukoy I've had in the area! - Lechon Kawali - After seeing all the pictures of their lechon kawali on Yelp!, my sister and I HAD to try it! It's very good with that Mang Tomas (sweet sauce)! - Sizzling Squid - I love the idea of sizzling plates! The squid was good and was garnished with sauteed onions, tomatoes and cucumbers! Great dish! - Garlic Rice - A must have when dining here! (They have white rice if you're not a garlic rice fan). SERVICE ------------------------- The service here is good! I'm Filipino, yet I'd choose Mexican food over pinoy food any day. However, Kalesa... Sh*t, I don't even know where to start. My family and I go here on special occasions and most of the time we would order the bulalo, kare-kare, and bangus sisig. OMFG, if you haven't tried the bangus sisig, you are missing out! GO GO GO try it! As for the kare-kare, it's actually really kare-kare. My aunt doesn't really use the "real" kind of meat you're supposed to put on it, but Kalesa actually uses OXTAIL. Shoot, it's sooooo good, I'm telling y'all. Prices weren't that bad either. I think it was around $80 when we last went. We're a family of 5 and we also got to take some leftover food home. The staff is pretty sweet and patient, too. Momma dukes takes forever to order sometimes and our waiter was very patient w/ it. He also recomended some dishes as we ordered! After 19 years of being born and raised in Milpitas, I have never once even heard of a Fillipino restaurant being within this area. Who knew there was Kalesa, a little corner place down Milpitas Blvd that I've ignored for all these years. My bad. xD This place is really nice though! A lot better then what I had initially expected from the outside. My fillipina friend said that Kalesa means horse driven carriage, which is really cute for a place like this. The good here is pretty good! The lollipop wings were my favorite! Comes with a sweet dipping sauce. Although this plate is recommended for kids, it's great for fried chicken lovers, like myself. Contrary to the previous reviews, I wasn't a fan of the pancit palabok. It has a really strong smell, so I don't recommend it to people who aren't crazy about seafood. A lot of the fish dishes here were good, especially the Chopped Bangus + Chopped Pork with Salsa & Sauce? Forgot the name, but it was really good as well. And be sure to get some Halo halo! :D The service is decent. They also have a holy week menu for those who are on lent, and a bit of a prominent veggie section as well. Who knew this was right there?! Easy parking in the plaza, interior is not bad. Large enough to have gatherings. Food was good, but don't get the eggplant omelet with ground pork. It was absolutely bland and looked nothing like the picture. Don't expect much from the service either. I went here a couple of days ago with my sister & boyfriend; when we first got there, there wasn't that many people eating... Maybe 4 tables occupied, no more than 6 tables were being used. That's not the bad part, the table NEXT to us did the same thing as well. What kind of ish is that? As for the food, it was delicious. My favorite would have to be the Sisig; which is like a marinated pork on a sizzling clay cooker. Yum! The meat was very soft & tender & the sauce was the perfect touch to it. The pancit palabok wasn't that good, it was very soggy & we actually had a lot left over to take home. Even though it ended up being discarded the next day. Pata tim, was basically the pork shank with bokchoy... The meat was good, it fell off the bone & it was very soft & somewhat melts in your mouth. I just wasn't a big fan of the broth that went with it. Also! They charged us for rice!!! WHO DOES THAT?!?! Like are we suppose to eat the salty meat & everything by itself? When I think of Filipino restaurants, 3 things automatically come to mind: styrofoam containers, food protected by a sneeze guard, and a petite 50 something year-old "auntie" donning a hairnet. When I walked into Kalesa and didn't see any of those things, I was pleasantly surprised. The decor was simple and tasteful, no tackiness noted. And the dim lighting made it feel like a true dining experience. We were there to celebrate my brother's bday. We ordered 2 orders each of the crispy pata, kare kare, pork sisig, pancit bihon, pancit palabok, pinakbet, and dinuguan. The crispy pata wasn't as crispy as I would have liked, and I don't do "chocolate meat." The rest of the dishes were great, my faves being the kare kare and both pancit dishes. Everyone else enjoyed the food, too. I gotta knock off a star because they didn't clear the surrounding tables right away. There were dirty dishes and used napkins just sitting on those tables as we ate. It felt so unsanitary. But props to them for trying to cut down on the use of MSG. I found Kalesa while doing a Google search for Filipino Banquet Halls, looking for a relative who is having her 80th birthday in a few weeks, and will definitely be using Kalesa. Arrived today to sample some dishes, seated quickly and even though mostly full, there was still plenty of space between tables all the while another big birthday party was taking place. There is a large wait staff who attentively takes care of everything. Drink orders taken right away and served, our orders taken and we had our appetizer in less than 10 minutes. Soon the rest of the food rolled out! Have the chicken adobo, sizzling sisig with fish, Pancit bihon and the calamari appetizer. Oh also garlic fried rice. Served one right after the other! Ordered one additional item and it came quickly as well, the restaurant was full and I was amazed at the speed food rolled out of the kitchen. The birthday group of about 30 people ended and the staff in under 15 minutes had everything cleaned and cleared for another party. Beautiful, large restaurant inside, comfortable tables and chairs and clean restrooms. Finished off with reset, halo halo and leche flan. So good! Can't wait to come back and try more! My family and I enjoy this place a lot! There are a lot of families that come here on Sundays (the only time we go is after church). The wait time varies. The decor inside is very simple. The worker's uniforms are very cute. They're dressed in tradition Filipino clothes. Food is awesome. I especially love their Lechon Kawali, Kare Kare, calamari (that white sauce and garlic soy sauce dip is masarap!), and of course their Sinigang! I personally love their Sinigang broth because it's sour, like how it should be. I could eat that alone with rice! Service can be slow. They also tend to rush you into finishing all your food fast by asking if you're done with a plate, when there's clearly still food on it... My friends hit it again with a great food. The flipinos know how to eat. The food was really good and fatty. You definitely do not go here if you are on a diet. The rice was nice and warm, the ox tail was the best overall I think called kare kare. the pork was good as well, it was juicy. The server was pretty and great at the same time. She even laughed when I told her if it was as goo as jollibee heheheh and gave us a discount on our soup and it ended up being $2 dollars only which was nice. Soo growing up with Filipino food I can be kinda harsh when reviewing Filipino restaurants... So it's a good thing Kalesa is awesomeee =D I was pretty worried coming in about the service, but it was actually pretty good, even though the place was super packed. I was never hurting for a water refill and we got attention when we needed it pretty easily. Who really likes it when the waiter is hovering over your table interrupting conversation anyway? Anywaysss the food was bomb. The highlight was the pork sisig. The sisig was super flavorful. We got the lumpia shanghai and the lechon kawali as well with two sides of garlic rice. They were all really good and tasty, but if I were going to be super picky I would say that they all lacked flavor somewhat. The lumpia wrapper was cooked well and the texture was great - flaky and crispy in a good way, but the filling was pretty bland. The kawali was cooked well and tasted good with the sauce, pretty standard but yummy. The garlic rice was again tasty, but it was somewhat lacking in garlic, I wish they had put more of the crispy garlic flakes in it. This is an update on their Sunday breakfast buffet. Wow, this place had changed since the last time I was here. Unfortunately, it is not for the better. The food seemed to be like leftover food. With the exception of the rice and scrambled eggs, the dishes did not seem like they were just cooked. They seem like they were cooked several hours ahead. There was this dried fish dish that seemed to have been fried in advance then fried again to serve that morning. It ended up being over cooked to being burnt. Also, the kare kare hat was served was barely warm. How do you serve a barely warm stew?!! Either this place is trying to cut corners, being cheap, or getting lazy, maybe all three, but whatever it is, they have lowered the quality of the food considerably!!! Sunday brunch buffet is under 20 bucks. And it is wonderful and plentiful. Every possible filipino dish I crave is in the buffet. Fried rice, tocino, longanisa, eggs, lumpia shanghai, fish, halo halo bar, kare kare, pancit, bangus, adobo, pinakbet, sago drink and more. I am in heaven whenever I come here on Sundays. You're allotted two hours of dining. Which is plenty of time because I'm about done at the one hour mark. One tip: go early. Even the bagoong or shrimp paste that came with it was tasty) *sizzling spicy sisig - theirs was good, but I really think Nayong Filipino is still better although I've been told that both places are owned by the same owner * Lumpiang Shanghai - ordered a plate of these for the kids and they loved it (if kids love it, mommy loves it!) * green beans with squash in coconut milk (It was Tagalog on the menu, can't remember the exact words...sitaw-something) - anyhoooo, it was very good! My kids loved the squash. Service was excellent, our waiter was always smiling and good with the kids. They even pulled an extra table to accommodate our plates. I didn't like their iced tea, though - it's simply just the same Nestle iced tea that my mom mixes at home. Definitely check out Kalesa if you are craving some yummy Filipino grub. Let me first say that I rarely eat at Filipino restaurants. Being Filipino myself I never saw the point in going out when I could get a far superior (and free-er) meal at home. I won't lie I think my mom's food is the best...her palabok is unbelievable...but wait this isn't a review about my mom's cooking this is about Kalesa. First thing I want to say about Kalesa is it broke the stigma of Filipino restaurants being cheap and run-down. Very nice ambiance and an extremely professional staff made this a great experience. I ordered the Tapsilog...I did not regret it. The meat was something I never had before, not even my mom ever made it, it tasted like korean meat almost. The eggs were great and the Garlic fried rice...mmm! My brother and his girlfriend had the Kare Kare and and Bangus Sigsig. They enjoyed it. We topped off the meal with dessert: Sans Rival and Turon w/ Avocado ice cream. I was not a big fan of Avocado ice cream so I didn't have it, but they seemed to enjoy it. The Sans Rival however, that was delicious. I couldn't really explain it, it was a sweet pastry, served cold, you have to try it. I can't forget to mention the waitress, extremely courteous and very attentive. As for now this place gets 5 stars because the first impression was excellent. read more

I always have mixed feelings about this place. The food is hit or miss, but the the awful service stays consistent. They're so slow and definitely move on Filipino time. We ordered tocilog, longsilog and sisig silog. We asked for over easy eggs on all three dishes and ALL of them were over cooked. I didn't know frying an egg is that complicated, but they managed to mess it up 6x. When I brought it to the server's attention when she brought it out to me, she chuckled about it and walked away. I had to ask another server to correct it, and she did. She was actually the only pleasant one. I believe she was Latina. I've had good here in the past which is why I've given them 3 stars. The bulalo was salty and not tender. The sisig could be cut smaller and still tough. The beefsteak was too sweet. The grilled squid was gummy and I hard a hard time chewing it. The servers were not attentive we had to get their attention to get what we need. One server did his best to ignore us. They had a wedding reception on the same area where we ate and it was loud. We have been here numerous times over the years. It is our go to restaurant for delicious, authentic Filipino food. You can't go wrong with any of their dishes, but my favorite is their kare kare. Came here on our way back from the Garlic Festival in Gilroy. The fam was craving some filipino food. Found this spot and decided to go based on the reviews. As expected it was in a little shopping center, so we drove by a couple times trying to find the place. it's right next door to the Walgreens, if that helps any of you... As we walked in, my parents noticed the place was really empty. Mind you, we got there around 5pmish for dinner. There were probably less than 10 people in there. In their mind, if a restaurant is not packed, it's not good. Luckily, this was not the case at Kalesa. We ordered Crispy Pata, Lechon Kawali, and to accompany the deep fried heartattack goodness we had to have sabaow...Batangas Beef Bulalo. The portions were plentiful (we were a party of 5 and took home leftovers!), the service was great (they kept checking to make sure our water glasses were full and if they could take away any dishes). Loved the broth of the bulalo! Our bill came out to be $55 (entrees + mango juice + halo halo) without tip. A little pricey, but the quality and quantity of food was superb. On a side note, my parents noticed the restaurant was playing American Songs and commented to our server that they should play some Filipino music. The staff went back and changed the CD! My parents appreciated that! I think it adds to the atmosphere to have music from your country, diba? Would definitely come back if in the area. My co-workers and I had a luncheon here and I really liked the place. The servers were wearing the traditional Filipino costume "baro't saya." One of my co-workers ordered by phone and when we arrived, our table was already set. We ordered Sinigang na Baboy, Sizzling Bulalo, Sizzling Pork Sisig, Steamed Rice and Sago at Gulaman. I didn't like the Sago at Gulaman because the Sago Syrup was too bittersweet. They needed to dilute it to the correct sweetness. Other than that, everything was fine.
