The BBQ has the best meat quality + flavors compared to anywhere else locally! Their cooking is Northwestern Chinese (Hsinchuang/Xinjiang/新疆), famous for 新疆烤串 ئۇيغۇرچەUyghur BBQ. This spot is known for their $1 lamb skewers daily happy hour 5:00-6:30pm, and recently added $2 wagyu beef skewers deal as well. Kids aged 12 and under get a free kids meal: chicken tenders, French fries, and a kid's drink! You also get loyalty points using your phone number to order via QR code, which will accumulate to get you free drinks, desserts, beer etc. Traffic on weekdays getting to Milpitas for dinner from the South Bay is crazy so plan ahead and make a reservation especially if you're going on Fri/Sat during the HH deal. Gao's is located in Milpitas close to Kalesa, Sushi Umami, Sunright Tea Studio, etc. The parking is ok in this strip mall. The beef was a bit tough but we got decent portions for the lamb and was flavorful and well worth the price. Came on Monday night, good thing is they open late, bad thing is everything is sold out. Past 9pm, this place is getting filled, mostly younger adults. Most of their food is spicy or heavy in seasoning. We ordered 1-2 sets of combos and it came with a whole bunch of food, Korean cold noodle soup, stir fry clam, stir fry octopus, crawdad rice (super spicy!), lobster tails with corn cobs, the skewers were massive! Chicken liver, chicken heart, lamb, chicken, chicken skin, beef, tiny corn kennels. They are mostly seasoned with cumin, except the lamb and chicken, most skewers have a small amount of meat only, but taking a few of them do fill up quickly. We also got a spicy crawfish and gloves were provided. I am not a big fan of crawfish as it has very low ROI, lots of finger works for a tiny small amount of meat. The seasoning is strong so the meat does have good flavor. The most loved is probably the fried man-tou with condensed milk. When it's warm, it's so delish and a great tool to cool down the spice. Some coworkers and I came in after work because we saw there was a special meal set. When we got there we found it was happy hour and decided to do that instead. We got lamb and beef skewers and cold noodles. You order on your phone and they say to go ahead and order quickly and add more later if you want. They get very busy and it's better to not have your food take too long or wait too long in the kitchen. I really hate that I have to make this update but we went back again today and got seated at 6:10 PM. We immediately placed an order for lamb skewers and follows up ten minutes later witj rice, dan dan noodle and tofu skewer. The Dan Dan noodles came out in less than 5 minutes and the tofu maybe 10 minutes later. Our lamb skewers are no where to be found and it's been 25 minutes or so. Please avoid this place. I came on a Tuesday evening, and the restaurant was packed. Waited about 45 min to get seated for a table for 2 and the food quality was mediocre. The servers gave us peanuts and sunflower seeds to chomp on while we waited, and I realized it's because they also take forever to give you your food. The table next to us waited 2 hours in line to be seated for their party of 6, and it took them another 1 hour just for their beer tower to be served to their table that they ordered right when they sat down. It's also extremely hard to get any of the worker's attention, they deliver the food to tables and keep their head down and walk away quickly. You have to stand up to get their attention. The food quality was okay, the meat on the sticks were bare to minimum amount of protein, the sticks aren't even full sticks. They also have a secret shopper system that's clearly listed on their instagram bio to participate, promising $40 gift card after submitting the survey, which is a false claim, I've never seen anyone receive their gift card in return for completing the surveys. Yikes. They offer discounts to those who post high rated reviews -- hence the reason why there are so many high reviews in the first place. Avoid this restaurant. This is hands down the best crawfish boil you can get in the bay! They have live crawfish, which taste better than any other place serving frozen ones. The non-spicy cajun sauce was also full of garlic and had a pleasant sweetness that went well with the heads. Plus, the deal to buy 5 pounds and get the 6th free is a steal (for $104!). We got quite a few jumbos that were at least 6-7 inches long! I also enjoyed the skewers, but I'll admit I have no benchmark to compare to. Every meat we tried was well seasoned, but I particularly liked the pork intestines with garlic. It has a great texture and the whole garlic clove was very sweet/tender. My brain didn't process that the beef sashimi was intended to be raw, so that was a surprise. I thought the sashimi would be grilled on the hot plate on the table. The food took about 45 minutes to come out, and we had to track down the waiter just to find out what was going on. We pointed it out to the waiter, and they did remove the charges. The part that really bothered me was the tip situation. The atmosphere is awesome. The music is great. Of course it's in Chinese. Service is great!! Attentive and efficient. Place is clean. The food here is good but the service is incredibly slow and not worth the wait when there are other skewer places that are substantially quicker and more efficient. It seemed like there were constant communication issues between front of house and the kitchen, resulting in repeatedly delayed or incorrect orders. Front of house staff also had to manually count the skewers which only delayed the orders being sent out more. read more

I got the small beef skewers and some chicken skewers to go and I expected them to have some more meat than what was given. The portions are kind of small and the meat itself is bland, except for the beef. The chicken one did not taste like much. For around $16, this wasn't worth in my opinion. read more

Updated review but it is still easily 5 stars for me! This has officially become my favorite spot for skewers. Everything we ordered was flavorful, well seasoned, and incredibly satisfying. The spices were bold but not overpowering, which made every bite enjoyable. They are known for their Chinese BBQ skewers, but the seafood boil really stood out. The crawfish were huge and high quality, with seasoning that was different from the Vietnamese-style crawfish I am used to, yet still very well balanced. The King of Eggplant is an absolute must order, and the cold noodles were refreshing and paired nicely with everything. The ambiance here is lively and fun, making it a great spot for a night out. Perfect for birthdays, karaoke up front, or just hanging out with friends over skewers. This spot definitely has the vibe of a night market or food stalls with salty skewers and beer, rolls of paper towels on the table, disposable bowls and cups, a big screen with music videos playing. Came here with three friends to celebrate a birthday. There was a happy hour deal for $1 lamb skewers and $2 wagyu skewers before 6:30 pm. The food took a while to come out and sometimes came out one skewer at a time. There is a QR code and everyone at the table can add to the order on their phone. The food is tasty, albeit very salty. We did order several vegetable dishes like cauliflower, cabbage, and some green onion skewers, and mushroom. The food was tasty- but everything felt quite heavy and oily-- not bad, just a bit different than what I usually gravitate towards. Almost everything we got was very flavorful and quite salty. The seafood crawfood boil was my favorite dish- super garlicy and the crab and shrimp was moist and flavorful. As a very recent return for health reasons to re-introducing seafood into my diet after eight years of being vegetarian, this place is good if you're looking for seafood amongst many other options. The ambience was definitely upbeat & felt as if I was in ittle Tokyo, neon lights, anime, you name it, including some pretty cool K-pop that was playing overhead. Staff was very friendly and accommodating as well as patient with this first timer when helping review the menu and answering any inquiries. There are many other options on the menu as well, to include an array of assorted meats for those not so faint of heart to try. Portions are very sizable, so needless to say I only ate a few bites. I'd recommend this joint for groups of people. In addition, there is also a fully stocked bar, and the menu includes a variety of different types of Soju's as well as other spirits. Ordering process was super simple, just scanned the barcode and ordered through my phone. Was a little bummed that the shellfish I did order, of course contained the head, which is a bit overwhelming for me since I'm barely starting to eat seafood again, however, it was to be expected since it was pictured on the menu. Not sure if it's available to order without it, perhaps will try that next time. Be prepared to get a little messy when peeling and cracking. Fortunately, a pair of gloves are included with this process I would say the prices were pretty on point overall. I enjoyed the corn skewers, the King oyster mushroom skewers as well as okra, which was a very first time try for me.
