BLT Sandwich on marble rye with Potato Salad.

My Dad and I were in town for an appointment and stopped in for lunch. My BLT on marble rye was delicious and the in-house potato salad, exquisite! Our Server was very polite and friendly. She made sure that we were well tended to. The staff in general worked in unison! The Restaurant is bright and friendly, clean and inviting. Thank you for a great dining experience.

Mimosas
Michael G.

I stopped in around 2:15pm on Tuesday with a friend for a quick brunch before they closed at 3. Upon walking up to the entrance I had gotten Cozy Diner vibes. My friend had let me know they were managed by the same owner or something of that nature. I thought that was pretty cool and was now even more excited because Cozy had a great breakfast to offer when I visited before! Our server was so sweet and didn't make us feel like we were a hassle for showing up 45 minutes before closing. We started by ordering a bottle of wine and a large glass of freshly squeezed orange juice to make Mimosas. I chose the Homestyle Chicken Fried Chicken Sandwich and my friend had opted for the $7.99 cheesburger deal. The sandwich had FRESH toppings! The lettuce and tomato were healthy and filled with life. The french fries were the famous "Diner" style fries you can just keep eating endlessly until your heart desires. Overall, I enjoyed my time here and would totally revisit again. Thank you!

Chefs salad. Enough for two.

We asked for a table outside because she can't hear well, and the cafe was bustling and loud. The staff seated us, but had to move tables around outside. The hostess and a "regular" of the cafe said things like "this is what we do in a tourist economy." "We have to accommodate the tourists." As if we were a bother and they were bending over backward to accommodate us. Because my mother in law was there, and she is emotionally raw right now, I avoided conflict. So I'll say now, what I wanted to say to those snarky, rude employees Thursday: My husband's family has had a plot in the Taylorsville cemetery for longer than those two ladies been alive -- combined. His grandmother had 2 restaurants in Greenville. His mother is a fixture in the community, living through the Dixie fire and coming back to rebuild her life. Now she'll bury her husband there. My sister and brother in law worked in public service in Quincy for decades. We aren't tourists. And even if we were, you were incredibly unwelcoming. You made a sad day worse. The food was fine.

Each time we have gone, prices have been reasonable, portions good, service excellent, and the food great. It's an old mid-century diner (looks like an old Sambo's to me, similar to, but different from the classic Denny's buildings of that area) so has a great diner ambience. Service is friendly and very attentive. Chicken fried steak, huevos rancheros, and buttermilk pancakes are excellent (5 stars). Corned beef hash of very good (4 stars). They also offer a side of one pancake with some dishes instead of toast, and I really like that. Very few places still do that and they get extra points for that option. Chicken fried steak has a nice crispy coating and is nicely cooked. The buttermilk pancakes are particularly excellent. Not too big, nicely toasty on the outside, light on the inside.

She went with fries and added a cup of chili as well. The fries were perfect and absolutely wonderful when dipped in the chili! Didn't even need ketchup! Burger was well done as requested and a nice size - she got some mustard but didn't even add ketchup. 13 bucks I think! Honey had the three pancakes, eggs, hashbrowns and got bacon instead of sausage. Pancakes were perfect and he of course got the blackberry syrup which has just a simple wonderful flavor! If you are sitting with someone that has some chili grab a spoonful or two and add it to the hash brown and egg! Super tasty! 12.99 Great service both the waitress and manager were awesome and super attentive! Good conversation and smiles! The booths are comfortable and it's nice and warm which makes it nice when you are with people who always tend to be cold!! I fully support this place and love that they are still in business and have special hours! They aren't open late anymore and that's fine with me! Stop in and support locally owned long term businesses they deserve your support and are cheaper than a fast food meal!

Cute spot with booths all over and a friendly staff. We were greeted and seated right away. I ordered the breakfast sandwich which is on a croissant with smoked bacon strips, avocado, mixed greens, bacon jam and two eggs. Instead of the potatoes, I got fruit for an additional $3.49. The sandwich was ok and I usually like bacon jam but I didn't like how sweet it was on this. The fruit was a sliver of orange, a very soft and super thin sliver of flavorless watermelon, a few slices of strawberries, a handful of blueberries and a ton of thin sliced apple. It wasn't great and I gave the apples away. I would have preferred just berries and for the additional cost, it would have been worth it. Randy ordered The (Not So) Standard Benedict and said it was only ok. He didn't like the super soft potatoes that came with it so he didn't eat many of them. His very thin slice of watermelon on his plate was also soft and flavorless. Our friend ordered the French toast and said it was good. I don't think we'd go back but we really appreciated the attentive server we had.

I scoured the menu and was excited to find so many hash choices. I was moved by the Irish Burrito, but ordered Linda's omelette; while my daughter went with the eggs Benedict. In a town that takes its breakfast seriously, and where I've probably worked my way through more menus and reviews than I should admit, this one quietly climbed right to the top of my list. My omelette was exactly what you want when you order one. Fluffy without being dry, full of flavor without trying too hard, and cooked like someone in the kitchen actually cares about eggs. The ingredients were balanced and fresh, not just thrown together as filler. The hollandaise sauce was original, I couldn't find a lemon, cheese or any other overwhelming base, it stood out. The hash was perfect. My daughter's eggs Benedict looked like a postcard version of what that dish should be. Perfectly poached eggs, rich hollandaise that didn't feel heavy, and ham that actually tasted like ham instead of just salt delivery. One of those plates where you steal a bite "just to try it" and immediately understand the decision. The real surprise for me was the potato pancake I picked instead of the usual hashbrowns. Light, airy inside, crispy outside, and seasoned just right. Honestly one of the better breakfast potatoes I've had anywhere. If potatoes had a hall of fame, this one would at least get a nomination. The place itself has a warm, comfortable feel. Wood tones, rooster themes everywhere, a relaxed local energy where people look like regulars and first-timers feel welcome anyway. Service was friendly and efficient without feeling rushed. In a city full of strong breakfast spots, this might actually be my current favorite. That's not something I say lightly.

I'm in Chico for a little bit and found there's a Black Bear here. The onion rings I was really impressed with last, so we decided to get a whole side order for around $8 bucks. It arrived before our entrees, of the patty melt and the bacon cheeseburger salad. I guess i was expecting a bug mound of onion rings with the full appetizer order, so I was a little underwhelmed with the portion, but it tasted good anyways. I found you can substitute say fries off a burger or sandwich for the onion rings no charge, which I find rare in restaurants that you can get onion rings no extra charge. I'll just get the onion rings that way next time. My patty melt was mos fab and actually cooked med rare as ordered! Hardly any place cooks as I order, normally you just get well done no matter how you order a burger. My friend's bacon cheeseburger salad was really good, that was my choice if I didn't get the patty melt! I'll still come to Black Bear Diners, I'll just get onion rings instead of fries. We had kids with us, so we got there an hour before it became 21+. Everyone was friendly, the food came pretty quick relative to how hopping it was. We ordered: Pho-rench dip (w/fries)--I think this was a DDD sandwich, so it's not some hidden gem, but it was super tasty. You cannot go wrong. The slight lime-iness of the dipping broth really kicked it into turbo. Also, we all likes the steak fries--a note on that later. Chicken Cheese Steak (w/fries)--my wife loved it. I tried a bite, and it was great--a little mushroom-forward, but we like that. Mac and Cheese--do not be fooled by the slightly smaller bowl, it is very filling. My son can eat his birth weight in pasta, and he had to tap out! I tried a bite--it was creamy (not grainy at all), and was just the right amount of salty and cheese-funky. Grilled cheese and tomato soup (w/fries)--perhaps the least successful for my family, but only because my daughter prefers a smoky/spicy tomato soup, and this was more on the sweet side. The griled cheese was of the "crispy cheese on the outside" ilk, which my daughter thought was really good. So, totally would go again. IMPORTANT NOTE (to people traveling through Chico, or who don't want to take leftovers)--the sandwiches are pretty big, and the add-on fry order is also sizeable. If we were going again tomorrow, we would either order 1 fry instead of 3. Or split a sandwich. Very very good pub.
