Went back the next day and ordered dishes to stay. Got a one-two punch of (1) pork siu mai and (2) fish bean curd roll. They were pretty good, and I paid with a credit card. Looks like they've moved to this new location on Pender at some point in the last decade. The new place is definitely more modern, but also quite a bit smaller. Seating is available but limited. The place starts to run out of dim sum about 1h before closing, so don't show up last minute. Not a bad thing though, as it means all their hot food is fresh. There are also freezers full of frozen dim sum. I tried some siu mai. Tasty and hit the spot. Great for a snack. Good for getting one's dim sum fix if one is in the area. Recommended. read more

​I visited the new Hastings location without realizing this is primarily a frozen/take-out dim sum operation. While the prices are very low, the quality reflects that. ​I was a bit confused when asked if I wanted sauce for my Har Gow (shrimp dumplings). The skin was thick, maybe it would've helped. Unfortunately, the food taken from the warming shelf wasn't actually warm and both doors were left open to the cold air. The chicken sticky rice was a generous size, but it was mostly plain rice with very little filling. If you're looking for a quick, cheap snack, it fits the bill. However, if you want the authentic dim sum experience, I'd personally prefer to pay double at a sit-down restaurant for better quality and heat. read more

Wow I didn't expect the dim sum to be this good to be honest. I got the ha gow, a sesame bun, and fried sticky pork dumpling. The taste, freshness, and quality is better than some restaurants (e.g. Little Bird dim sum cough cough). I like that the dim sum is not overly greasy, and my stomach was feeling nice and comfy after eating the food. The hot sauce was flavourful, too. Service is so friendly and nice, store is clean and easy to shop, and prices are so cheap. I will be back very soon! read more

We eagerly arrived 8 minutes before they opened so we can get a seat. I'm glad we did bc there's only three tables and a window counter area to sit. Decent Prices But Disappointing Quality I'd heard about this dim sum takeout/counter-service spot in Chinatown for a couple of years, and finally stopped by one morning to check it out. The menu is posted on the wall with all the classic dim sum items listed at reasonable prices--most around $5 for four pieces. The sticky rice in lotus leaf runs about $6 each. I ordered four items: shrimp dumplings, pork dumplings, sticky rice, and pork bean curd wraps. Service was quick and friendly, and the server spoke English, Cantonese, and Mandarin as advertised. There are only three small tables along the wall, so it's really more of a takeout spot than a dine-in experience. They're well-stocked with frozen items--BBQ pork buns, dumplings, and other dim sum--so you can take them home to steam yourself. The hot food is kept in a steam display case, and they ask whether your order is for dine-in or takeout. (Note: there's a small charge for a plastic bag, so bring your own if you can.) Once home, I reheated everything. The pork dumplings were disappointing--too much filler, barely any pork flavour, and the wrappers were loose, clearly machine-made. The shrimp dumplings had the same wrapper issue. The pork bean curd wraps were the best of the bunch--decently flavourful. The sticky rice came nicely wrapped in lotus leaf, but the filling (minced pork, a piece of chicken, and a small bit of Chinese sausage) was bland and needed seasoning; I ended up adding black pepper and Maggi to bring out some taste. If you don't mind frozen, machine-made dim sum, this place is decent value and might be convenient. But if you're looking for fresh, restaurant-quality dim sum, you'll likely be disappointed. We knew this was a frozen dim sum joint, but thought the above average rating deserved a try. Sadly, our experience fell way below the mark. TLDR: It's cheap but you get less than you pay for. The har gow we ordered had very mushy, not fresh mystery shrimp concoction. The siu mai was only slightly better flavorwise but had a super rubbery meat texture. Both dim sum skins were dry and chewy. Thankfully only bought these two to try, and we ended up throwing away the har gow. We then made a bee line to Chinatown BBQ, and ate happily ever after. read more

Back in the days when my Grandma hosts weekly dim sum get-together at dim sum restaurants in Chinatown, we would stop by Kam Wai to buy frozen buns to take home or we will buy a lotus leaf wrap or hot steamed bun to eat on the spot. Yes, one can buy and eat more dim sum, even after a dim sum meal because there's alway room for dim sum :) During the last decade, Kam Wai has updated its look and space, moving to the current location on East Pender Street. They maintain a cute dining area with small round tables and a limited hot foods menu so you may enjoy a bite on site. Kam Wai is famous for their Jumbo Deluxe Bao (aka. Chicken bun 雞球大包 ) and their dumpling and rice dish options offers exceptional value for lunch. Instead of tea, you can buy wonton soup or cold soft drinks in the fridge to complement your meal. I saw that this place had decent online ratings and thought I'd give them a try especially since they are in Vancouver's Chinatown. Overall a hit or miss with their food. Pork siu mai and shrimp dumplings were tasty but as you can see in my photos, they were falling apart even before I picked them up with my chopsticks to consume. Flavoring of their pork spare ribs on rice was a-OK and bit bland: I've had better at other dim sum places. Congee was pretty delish and it's hard to mess that up. Pretty much all of their food is pretty cheap! It's a counter service with three tables and couple stools, so it's best to go there during non peak times if you want to dine in. Hearing about the plethora of dim sum options in Vancouver, I wanted to try a variety of sit-down and quick-service dim sum restaurants. Kam Wai Dim Sum came up as a top hit from a Yelp search for a quick-service where you stand in line, order, and pay. Dine in is available, but there's maybe only 3-4 small tables and a counter seat. I visited on a weekday around 12PM. Most of their steamed items sell at four pieces per order, but they accommodate some mix-and-match options--just ask! Since I was by myself and not on an empty stomach, I wanted variety but no leftovers, so I ordered two pieces each of pork siu mai and ha gow. The pork siu mai was ok, I felt like it should've included some mushroom or roe for different textures and flavors. It was overall bland and really needed soy sauce and hot sauce. And the ha gow was unfortunately worse. The shrimp was mushy and the dumpling skin was too thick. Maybe I dined on an off-day, but my expectations were high and I left disappointed. Are you KIDDING ME? This place was AWESOME. Food - 10/10 some of the best dim sum I've had ESPECIALLY for this crazy price point. I think we got an order of har gow, 3 bao buns, 1 order of shu mai, and some mushroom potstickers all for like $21 CAD. That is INSANELY affordable. So delicious. I loved how not greasy everything was too which is sometimes what happens with dim sum items. Service - fast and friendly. Greeted us and patient considering we were first timers :) limited seating!! You can pick from so many options so we grabbed a few things including pork shu mai, ha gow, and the tofu wrapped meat (4 pieces each for $4.75) to share and everything from the shu mai to the lotus rice wrap were all good. This review is for grabbing items to heat at home/one pastry item (Jian Dui - aka deep fried sesame ball with red bean paste inside). This is a bustling shop that allows you to eat in on a few tables or grab their ready to heat/cook items like Zhong Zi (My mom called this rice wrap, but is the triangular shaped sticky rice with yummy items like duck egg or fatty pork or peanuts). When we were here, we grabbed a few of these, plus some ready to steam dim sum items and everything hit the spot! Nothing disappointed and I'm itching to go back and grab more items to have on hand in my fridge/freezer to satisfy my dim sum cravings. Prices are really affordable, and if paying in cash and over a certain amount, we got some discount that I cannot recall anymore! I also got a hot yummy jian dui/red bean sesame ball to go because deep fried chewy dough with a sweet red bean paste is never a bad idea. So glad Kam Wai Dim Sum exists. I loved finding this place as we wandered around Chinatown. It's no frills - but it is clean and you can pick up a few hot items to eat there, or pick up frozen dumplings and other items to take home to cook. We did both! We had ha gow (shrimp dumplings) and wonton soup there and picked up frozen wonton and potstickers to cook at our apartment. The ha gow wrapper did fall apart easily - but they was forgiven since the taste and texture was good! read more

More like 2.5 stars for the food but staff deserves a higher rating. Perhaps I'm spoiled by the dim sum that I can get in the Bay Area, but this place did not impress. Apart from that, everything else was standard or below average. $30 for everything. - Siu Mai: delicious - pork veggie beancurd roll: not enough filling, more wrapper and and airy than anything else - Giant deluxe chicken bun: not bad, pretty good, amount of filling and other ingredients was good - chasu bun: didn't like it at all, chasu tasted old and the pieces were fatty and small portions - pumpkin bun w red bean: just ok, nothing special - chicken lotus wrap: it was just ok, not enough ingredients, I did like how they added sausage in it - sticky rice wrapped in leaves with pork and egg (in refrigerated section): worst I have EVER had. Tourist review! 3.5 stars I stumbled on this place actually because it was close to a coffee shop that I wanted to try, so I stopped in at their opening time. As an overview, I had heard that the Chinese food in Vancouver is better than Hong Kong because of all the people that have migrated here prior to the handover of Hong Kong back to many years ago, so I have to say perhaps I was expecting a bit more, and in all fairness, I am partial to Hong Kong style dim sum. They seem to have a lot of frozen to go dim sum which I think is their specialty, and the storefront is a way to offer some of that selection to eat in house. Ithought the Har gow was good but the sui mai wasn't my style and the dumplings were good but unremarkable. The sauces were normal and unremarkable and I have to say I was a bit disappointed that there was no chili oil or hot mustard but that's just me. read more

A not so hidden gem in not just chinatown but also Vancouver. I've been coming here for their frozen dim sum which are reasonably priced. Lately, I've discovered their eat in service which for a fraction of what one pays at restaurants, you get a decent meals that will hit the spot. Sure, it may not be as hot or fancy as restaurant, but you get value. I don't know why some reviews will compare it to a full service sit down restaurant. It's an honest local indie family business that is here to serve, or preserve, the chinatown community. I stopped in here on a Tuesday at around 12:30 with my husband after we had lunch, and were still a little hungry. Dim sum was the perfect solution because you could get as much or as little as you want, and we wanted to try Vancouver's dim sum. This was just your typical bakery dim sum though, nothing special. We had the shumai and the beef balls and both were kind of just mid. If you're looking for good dim sum, you won't find it here. But if you're looking for some dim sum that will hold your cravings over until you find real dim sum, then this is a viable option. They have hot dim sum and frozen ones too, so if I lived in Vancouver, I could definitely see myself buying a few packs for my freezer. There are a few tables inside but it seemed most people were getting their orders to go, or just grabbing the packs from the freezer. Kam Wai Dim Sun is a grab and go Dim Sum place with lots of variety to pick from. They have a few tables for indoor dine-in and were pretty popular for takeout. But they are most know for their big frozen Dim Sum section. I sat down and ordered 5-6 dishes for around $25. Definitely very affordable but limited options for dine in. I thought the har gou, siu Mai, and turnip cakes that we had were not super impressive but definitely met my needs. All I have to say about the food is that it was delicious, though the turnip cake could have been crispier (personal preference). We were expecting a dim sum restaurant where they wheel the cart with the dim sum on it. This place has dim sum hot and ready to go. They do have a few seats to enjoy the dim sum but most people buy and go. We were able to find a few chairs and a table to eat but no tea or drink. The pork bean curd was the best one. They make the dim sum and freeze them seems like the locals buy them frozen and take them home to make at home. The prices are very reasonable and the staff were friendly. I got 2 of their vegan mini baos ($1.60 each), a black sesame bao ($1.60), an order of mushroom dumplings ($5 for 5 pcs), and an order of bean curd rolls ($4.75 for 4 pcs), which I only later discovered weren't vegan, so don't order them if you're vegan! I enjoyed all of the items. Good value, convenient and reasonably tasty. It can't compete with the vegan dim sum at Po Kong and Sun Bo Kong, but as a quick grab n go place, it serves its purpose.
