My wife and I came here when the restaurant opened, and there was no line at the door. It was a bit difficult to find the place because the sign was difficult to read. The restaurant sign is white on clear glass which made it very difficult to read. We were the first party to be seated. We have a lot of regular dim sum, so we wanted to come to ChiuChow Seafood Restaurant to try something different. We were in the mood for some ChiuChow style food and other items not found at a typical dim sum restaurant. We got the marinaded duck with mouth watering tofu, oyster omelet, chicken abalone porridge, ChiuChow dumpling, and shrimp toast. Everything was delicious with a few critiques. The shrimp toast was really good, savory, crispy, and full of flavor. The ChiuChow style beef balls was similar to the Cantonese style, but was more tender. I think it was poached rather than steamed. My only complaints were that the buns were a bit bready; too much bread to filling. Also, the oyster omelet was very greasy. The first serving was good, but it was too greasy for me to get seconds. Overall it was a solid restaurant, and I would come back. read more

I came here for a family member's birthday dinner, and one side of the restaurant was having an event hosted by a travel agency. The issue was that the event was super loud as they were making speeches with mics going through speakers that extended throughout the entire restaurant. There was no division and no consideration of other guests. We could not even chat among ourselves because the volume from the mics were so loud; it was unbearable. I asked the waitress and the lady who seemed like the manager if they could have the volume turned down and I was brushed off, saying the speeches will be done soon. It was well over an hour with half hour break, then restarted again. I'm highly disappointed that they did not even try to respond to my request and help make it a bit more comfortable for us and our celebration. At least they don't charge for cake cutting fee. We ordered a bunch of dishes and food was mediocre and overshadowed by the overall experience. read more

Not a ton of Chiu Chow places here relative to other regional Chinese cuisines, so this is all relative. I came for a sunday dinner. If youve ever been to this restaurant prior to the most recent name change, its the same thing with a few chiuchow dishes added - according to one of the staff who chit chatted with us about it. And if you've been to the kirin that occupied this space even before then, its basically the exact same interior with a slightly different paint job. Ambiance - 3/5. Pretty dated place but fine. Clean enough. The place was not very busy - maybe 25% of tables were occupied. And yet, service was extremely slow - we had to flag them down almost each and every time. Once the food was ordered, it came pretty quick. But asking them for anything else (e.g. hot sauce) is next to impossible. When you have their attention, they are friendly. The manager went down to the parking lot personally with us to help with a problematic parking validation, so that was good on them. Manager 5/5, regular staff 3/5. Food: We ordered: marinated meats platter - this is mostly NOT meat - there was some sliced pork, marinated tofu, squid, pig ears, peanuts. All in similar quantities. How do you call this a meat platter when its only 40% meat? This is counting pig ears as meat, since its all skin and cartilage anyway; a bit of a stretch. Dish was fine but overpriced for what you get. Not spectacular. 3/5. pickled greens tripe soup - a chiuchow special. Fine. The offal was cleaned reasonably well, the broth was a little bland. 3.5/5. casserole with pork spareribs, straw mushrooms, mustard greens - this is basically a soup, with NO straw mushrooms, and instead some chopped up cheaper white button mushrooms and a few pieces of king oyster mushroom. Sparerib pieces were not cooked enough - still very tough. 2.5/5. steamed dessert balls stuffed with taro and red bean - this was good. 4/5. free osmanthus jelly dessert - also good. 4/5. They validate for free underground parking if you give them your ticket. Ours had a problem and we couldnt get out of the lot so we went back and the manager helped us resolve this. Pricing is high for what you get. Value for the quality of food is more like 2/5. All around 3/5. They need more attentive service, better quality food reflective of their high prices, and they need to fix the false advertising in the menu. I am tempted to give them 2 stars for that problem alone but will give them the benefit of the doubt. read more

We recently discovered a new restaurant called ChiuChow Seafood Restaurant 潮海鮮酒家, located along the Cambie Corridor. This restaurant serves authentic Teo Chew cuisine 潮州菜 and is a must-visit for Teo Chew cuisine lovers. During our visit, we tried their signature dishes, from the Chiu Chow-style cold-marinated appetizers to the heavenly Oyster Pancakes and Marinated Goose Meat. Each dish was made with high-quality ingredients, and the natural flavours of the produce were highlighted in every bite. ChiuChow 潮 impressed us with its rich and delicious flavours. This is a fine place for dim sum or Chinese food with Chiu Chow regional cuisine. They have all the Chiu Chow classic dishes - including marinated tofu and pig ear, which were pretty good. The egg oyster omelette was also decent. Dishes that really stick out: - Mushroom bao dim sum - this one looks like mushroom but is a real bao! - the Lava Bao or Lau Sa Bao is amazing. And very cute decorations too! - the tofu pot we got was very tasty. Their tofu dishes are top notch. - standard dim sum like har gao are very well done - there was a green bean dish with pumpkin and eggplant which was a favorite at our table. stepping into chiu chow seafood restaurant on a wednesday morning before 11:30 for dim sum felt like entering a familiar realm. the entrance was lined with a plethora of congratulatory floral arrangements from well wishers. the room was spacious and well lit. the ambiance mirrored regal mansion, from the vibrant red lanterns, to the mural of traditional chinese painting of children, to the tea pot and even chopsticks all felt like deja vu. despite the bustling atmosphere, we had no issues securing a spacious table for two. service was attentive, we enjoyed the panoramic view and our comfortable surroundings. the dim sum was fresh, and i especially enjoyed the chiu chow salted pork bone congee, the texture consistency was more like rice and soup, and had a heartiness to it. the pork was tender, seasoned well and perfectly balanced. prices for dim sum range from $8.80 for small dishes, $9.80 for medium, $10.80 for large, and $13.80 for special. tea is $1.50/person over five years old, and take out boxes are .75 each. now if you pay by cash, you will receive not only free tea, but also a 12% discount. chiu chow seafood restaurant is located on the second floor of city square shopping centre and there's complimentary parking underground. read more

My mom grew up in Teochew in the 1940s so she was eager to try out the restaurant for our Thursday family dinner last week as there are many Teochew restaurants in Vancouver. When our waiter was not able to say "I don't speak Teochew" in Teochew responding to my mom's question when we were given the menus, I told her that she might need to adjust her expectations of authenticity. The English spelling of Chiuchow in the names of some of the dishes was also a clue. We ordered 6 dishes: 1. Chiuchou style marinated meat platter. 2. Deep fried shrimp mousse with water chestnut. 3. Pan-fried baby oyster omelette 4. Stir-fried beef and gai lan in satay sauce 5. Stir-fried chives with dried shrimps, dried oyster, yam beans and taro 6. Deep-fried sweetened taro (as dessert) Before our foods were served, she was telling us that she would be able to tell the authenticity of the dishes by the oyster omelette dish. Unfortunately, she did not like it. There wasn't much flavour in the oyster and the omelette was not golden brown. She also preferred meats on the platter to be marinated longer. Otherwise, she rather enjoyed the rest of the dishes. However, I'm not sure she would recover from the omelette dish to pay a second visit. I agree her assessment on the 2 dished. However, my husband and I like the gailan dish, the chive dish, and the shrimp mousse quite a lot. We already talked about going back again for dinner to try the sweetened mashed taro with gingko for dessert. I grew up eating this prized Teochew dessert in Hong Kong in this neighbourhood Teochew restaurant that my maternal side of the family would go every we had family occasions. My only wish and it is purely personal ... I wished they had changed out the decoration put in by Regal Mansion (the previous business) when Regal took over the space from Kirin (the 2nd previous business). The long red lanterns are not proportional to the space and seem trying too hard to be modern. The oversized flattened Chinese lanterns with Kirin were perfect. read more

New owners and style since I visited last year and while the chefs do great work, super yummy and varied menu choices, lovely. YET the service is atrocious. I'm Chinese and lived in HK, so I "get" bad service by Western standards, yet these waitstaff barely acknowledge your existence, don't respond with any verbal or physical gestures as you order, get the orders wrong entirely and look rushed off their feet (makes me think they got a lot of tables orders wrong?). they aren't rude, which is a saving grace. its the oddity of not being welcome in this nice venue which isn't cheap either. Service is excellent but the chiu chow food is NOT up to my expectations for the flavor profile NOR does it have value price wise. (Ex: dim sum for two was about $85 and dinner was almost $200). Then again, I am Chiu Chow and have often eaten at the best chiu chow places in HK growing up, and just had some great Chiu Chow cuisine in Causeway bay a few months ago. If you've not had this cuisine before, go as it is worth trying . But if you are familiar with this style, lower your expectations before you go. read more

Went for dinner a few days ago. Ordered the famous marinated sliced duck 鹵水鸭片. The price is way too expensive at $63 for half whole duck. The price is comparable to 全聚德 but the quality is much below expectations. It is tasteless and seemed like left over from a few days ago. Other food were OK but were not chiuchow dishes.
