What can I say? Every time I visit Hawaii, stopping by Foodland to pick up a Poke bowl is a MUST!…read moreThere's often times a line waiting for your number to be called, but it's all part of the fun and anticipation. The staff is super duper friendly, and happy to let you sample before committing to which poke(s) you want to order. Let's be honest, they all taste phenomenal and super fresh. Truly one of my favorite grocery stores ever. They have everything you need here. Hot food bar, cold food bar, snacks, drinks, essentials... and of course Aloha vibes.

Put it this way... there's a literal island for poké in the center of the store. Safe to say you're…read morein the right place, and if you were questioning the decision, let the droves of people waiting be your sign to sit tight. $6/lb hot bar fridays, fresh poké by the pound, crispy crunchy karaage and succulent teriyaki skewers, and DO NOT forget about the plump and meaty salt & pepper wings... this is an epic stop to score your picnic essentials or fuel up before heading off to your next experience! Walking in late afternoon (3pm) I was shocked to find a veritable mob scene at the poké counter. By the pound, bowls, and even party trays are all being ordered, made and delivered in a moments notice. Now the play here is to ask for samples because you can try it all! I ordered their signature poké and some of the house spicy and enjoyed both, but it was after ordering that I realized that I'd missed 5-10 more varieties that were hiding around the corner. With so many customers lined up, this was overwhelming but I am sure I enjoyed every bite! The karaage was probably the most disappointing item, as it really was under seasoned and had obviously been prepared quite a bit earlier. The teri skewer was straight fire. I ordered one and quickly realized that should've been two because the first just seemed to disappear! Now those salt and pepper wings... DO NOT SKIP THESE. I ordered four, ate two with lunch and carried two into the airport with me for a snack later. I only wish I had a dozen more because that was the meal I was craving and now I need to wait until I get back there to have more. If a market is on your radar for some quick eats, this is a good choice. It's located in the massive mall, so it's a great place to kill some time.

Aloha, THE BEST…read morepoke I've ever had. I got a 2-scoop bowl over white rice with the furikake salmon and avocado ahi -- and everything tasted incredibly fresh. The fish was thick, flavorful, and didn't feel overly sauced or heavy. What stood out the most was the quality , you can really tell the difference. Every bite was clean, rich, and satisfying. It's a quick service so as well. It's also way more filling than it looks. I didn't expect it to hold me over like it did. Honestly, no complaints. At first, when I walked in, I was kind of overwhelmed, like where do I start?!!! If you're coming from the mainland, the style of this grocery store reminds me of a Whole Foods. I got some fresh poke (and holy guacamole, there is a HUGE selection to pick from!), 2 cans of banana water (what the heck? I didn't even know you can make banana water LOL), some sparkling coconut water, and some veggies. I loved everything I got, and I'm already planning another grocery list to go to Foodland for more of their goodies! Some of their prices are a little higher than those of other grocery stores, but not terribly so. All in all, I'm coming back here for more poke (beach poke and some taro chips, anyone?) and for some groceries! I loved the atmosphere and how friendly the employees are!

I decided to do the long walk from Waikiki down to the store, and I was so rewarded for the effort. Walking up and the row of epic restaurant stalls had me grinning from ear to ear. There were so many delicious options OUTSIDE the store that I almost never made it in. From handrolls featuring the freshest seafood from Hokkaido to wagyu kushiyaki and more, my mouth was watering seeing it all beautifully displayed in the windows, and I'm surprised no one said anything about my gawking. Don Q is such a fun store because they have anything and everything you can think of across nearly every category. If I said they're like the Japanese Walmart, it wouldn't hit quite right because the quality and breadth of the selections here are far better. My favorite part of visiting Don Q has to be the incredible array of Asian specialty ingredients and snacks they sell and the reasonable prices. I picked up some gifts here including some exceptional styles of furikake and togarashi, but saw way too many other things I wanted. They also have amazing prepared foods here, specifically Japanese items. There's an entire sushi counter featuring all cuts of bluefin and more, freshly made onigiri, great selection of bentos and and poké too! You really owe it to yourself to visit!

One of my favorite things about coming here is checking out the discounted food (bentos and sushi). You can find some great deals, and it's always fun seeing what's available. The store has a huge selection of local snacks, Japanese products, fresh foods, and household items, so I always end up leaving with more than I planned. It's also one of the best places to pick up souvenirs for friends and family back home without paying typical tourist shop prices. Convenient, affordable, and always worth a stop whenever I'm in Oahu.

We picked up a half-pound of Hawaiian-style spicy poke, which was super fresh with a nice kick of heat, and it paired perfectly with the furikake wonton chips we already had. Honestly such a great snack combo. We also grabbed a sushi tempura roll and were surprised by how good it was since we saved it for the next day for an early morning snorkel sesh: it was fresh, crispy, and filled with big chunks of shrimp, easily better than what some sit-down restaurants serve. The crispy Japanese sweet potato drizzled with a bit of honey was incredibly comforting and homey, and a nice balance of sweet and savory. We also tried the chicken katsu, which had a light, crisp breading and came with fluffy white rice topped with furikake. The side potato salad was refreshing with nice, chunky pieces of potato and not overly heavy. Perfect spot to grab quality food quickly before heading out to do other day-long activities. Everything was fresh, well-prepared, and way above typical "market food." Would absolutely stop by again on future trips.

The aisles are fairly wide and while it's busy, I can usually navigate this store easily. I've always enjoyed the selection of items from the bakery section--I like coming here for just a cake slice or single piece of cheesecake sometimes. One thing that does annoy me is that some of the aisles are now locked up and need a customer service associate to come unlock the display and give you your item. When I have a choice, I will wait and go to another place that doesn't lock items up like that. I would rather the store pay more for security and loss prevention than to inconvenience shoppers and make them get customer service to unlock items. That's just me. One of my fondest childhood memories is going to Tamashiro Market with my dad…read more When we lived in Kalihi, this was our usual spot. And even after we moved, we would still drive out just to come here for the seafood. That's how special it was to us. The reason why he chose Tamashiro over other grocery stores was simple--it was quality and because of my Nanay (grandma). His mom purchased from here and made so many delicious dishes. He knew what to look for, and he trusted this place. For him, it wasn't just about buying food... it was about getting the best for his family. My dad isn't the type to say "I love you." He shows it. One of the biggest ways he showed love was through his cooking. Even after a long day on his feet cooking for others, he would come home and cook for us. That was his way of taking care of us. I loved coming here with him. It was a five-senses overload--the smell of fresh seafood, the sound of people talking story, the colors of fish on display. Back then when you were allowed to sample a grape or poke to make sure it was good before buying. But more than that, it was time with him. I still remember the excitement I felt when I saw the pink building with the huge crab. I thought back then was to look at everything but now I understand that it meant something more..... something special--time with my dad. It's with a sad heart that Tamishiro Market is now closed.
