By far one of the best sushi restaurants I have experienced in the US. The cuts are perfect, the proportions are just right, and the selection is top notch. Reminds me of a few places I have been to in Tokyo. I see some less than stellar reviews here and I chop it up to not understanding what Kanda is really going for. This is a real sushi house, not a place that gives you huge over sauced rolls. They serve a true, authentic experience. Kanda Sushi has been in business for a long time, I've been visiting for almost 10 years on and off. The quality and taste of the rice is consistent. The preparation of the fish is sometimes hasty but the quality of the fish is the best around Thousand Oaks. They stick to traditional style sushi and sashimi, don't expect to get a dragon roll, but they are not pretentious. I would recommend the sticky rice and spicy tuna appetizer and sunomuno salad. It can be expensive and the service can be hit or miss, usually only one on staff even on busy nights. read more

This is Sushi at its best !!! A very special experience here with the very best fresh fish in a very comfortable setting. I love to have the Chief do his choice Sashimi specials for me - I'm always delighted. Very nice place for a date night with the special lady or another couple. We found kanda sushi because we were looking for a place to have a nice dinner before Frankie valli at the kavli theatre. What a wonderful treat. We sat at the sushi bar and sampled many of the items on the special board. Everything was fresh and delicious. We had fresh oysters, pompano, black mouth snapper, golden eye snapper, calamari tempura, black cod, waygu and green tea cheesecake! We'd like to come back if we ever are in the area. read more

I have never had sushi anywhere near this good. Not even close. It's not cheap, so my wife and I only go in for special occasions a few times a year, but every time, we're simply blown away by the flavors and textures of each piece served to us. Do yourself a favor, sit at the bar and order omakase (chef's choice). Let Mitsu-san serve you the very best they have that evening, and if he gives you any tips on how to eat it, listen! He knows his business. There are a couple of seasonal, off-menu items that stand out even higher than everything else - if they have Golden Eye Snapper (kinmedai) or house-smoked salmon on the specials board, make sure to get at least one order of each. read more

Full disclosure: I am a sushi snob. Overall terrible experience. Stopped by for lunch the other day. Sushi should not be stringy or chewy, no matter what! But that is what I consistently got here! The albacore belly had so many tough, stringy tendons that I literally could not chew it & had to spit it out. For the toro sushi I got a piece that looked like it came from the tail(there was a thick white tendon in the middle) and of course it was extremely tough & chewy. Just the look of the toro was off-putting & I should have asked for a better cut. The live scallop & baracuda were pretty good though. Nothing was memorable. I don't mind spending a lot for good sushi, but this place was a total rip off. $100 for lunch for 1 person, & I left still hungry and slightly nauseous. The chef was rude & extremely hard to understand. And if it tells you anything, this place was totally empty! If you want excellent sushi try Shibuya or SugarFish, both in Calabasas. I think I'm not the target audience for this place. The quality of the sushi is great, and the decor of the place is very nice. However, this is very basic, TRADITIONAL sushi - you can forget about your special rolls. Personally, I like my special rolls. The other item that was a bit of a turn-off was the price - this place is EXPENSIVE for what you get. The freshest selection of quality fish! I am a sushi connoisseur, if I could, I would have sushi every day. I've been to most of the sushi restaurants in the Conejo Valley and most of the high-end sushi restaurants (Nobu, Matsuhisa, Asanabe, etc.) Chef Mitsu is truly a wizard with his cuts of fish. Some may not appreciate the complexities of the cuisine of a true Japanese style sushi restaurant, and I can understand that. However, if you want to truly savour every bite of fish and nori, then you owe it to yourself to try this place. I know you will be hooked! read more

This is my favorite Westlake Village sushi spot. The fish is fresh and amazing. They have a great variety including different types of salmons and tunas. The chefs are friendly and great at what they do. Service is always prompt and courteous. I usually come here for lunch, I like their lunch specials, but I'm sure it is a great spot for dinner also. Just a note, this place is great for Sushi/Sashimi/Nigiri. Not the type of place you would go for for non-traditional rolls, etc. read more

Came here last night to have some sushi. We all started out with some miso soup, japanese peppers and some edamamei. The miso soup was about average. It was not that flavorful, and I usually like more tofu and nori in my miso. We ordered the spicy rock shrimp and the fried egg plant from the hot plate menu. As an appetizer for the table, these were hit with the group. Next came the sushi and lots of it. We ordered yellow tail, salmon, albacore, amberjack, trivially jack, California rolls, lobster rolls, spicy tuna rolls, cucumber rolls and fresh water eel rolls. As a whole the sushi was fresh and good. The yellowtail and salmon was excellent. The rolls were ok, as it was not so much the freshness, as the flavor that could have been improved. Seriously...as good as it gets. There hasn't been a GREAT sushi place in Westlake in a long time. Kanda Sushi hasn't been advertised much, but judging by my experience there, it doesn't need the marketing most places do. Not much I can say that hasn't been said in these reviews already! I felt like I was in Studio City or Westwood when I stepped into Kanda, albeit a much friendlier atmosphere than one would find on the west side. Very well put together, clean, modern, classy, I could go on. I figured that since I was coming to such a well reputed place, I'd go all out with my sushi. I got the blue fin toro, yellowtail toro, uni, tuna tataki (this was split with my friends, not all for me!); all phenomenal. It was my first time trying the uni, and while I found it to be an acquired taste, I feel like it could have been a whole lot "worse" if tried at another sushi restaurant. My friend and I had the pleasure of sitting next to a lovely couple of sushi veterans who helped guide our way. My friend got the spicy tuna and tuna cut rolls and raved about them. He didn't share, so I can't rave about them too. :-( Mitsu is an awesome, super friendly and knowledgeable chef...no one else like him out here. Trust his suggestions, don't ask for anything more or anything less with your sushi--as you will not need it. I have a feeling that Kanda will be doing very well, and for a long time! This new sushi restaurant is awesome! The sushi is very good, due to them really bringing back the more simple sushi which is truely good for ya, not the sushi with all the rich sauces. Now don't get me wrong I love the fancy sushi's of certain restaurants but this sushi is very simple and really emphasizes the quality of the fish. We tried the seaweed salad for the first course and it was delicious. The rolls are on the smaller size but don't lack in flavor. The restaurant is kind of small but the modern Japanese design is comforting while dining. The staff is overly nice, very gracious and doting. a few coworkers and i have been trying to hit all the sushi places in the camarillo/thousand oaks/simi valley/moorpark area. needless to say, that journey is far from over, but i'm glad we found kanda. while it's a bit on the pricier side, you'll find fresh fish and friendly sushi chefs. like someone else already mentioned, the place is very nicely furnished, and the bathroom is pretty fancy (i'm glad i'm not the only who thought that it was nice). they also have a white board that something along the lines of "no soy paper, no special rolls, no hot dogs", which i thought was funny. at the end of the day it makes sense, if you're looking for funky rolls drenched in who knows what, this isn't your place, but if you're looking for fresh fish that needs no soy sauce, this is your place. just be ready to pay for, or stop by trader joes down the street for a late night snack afterward. read more

First off, the negative reviews pretty much speak for themselves when you read them. If you are expecting huge portions of "american sushi" including absurd rolls and other non-sushi garbage, go elsewhere. To address specifically: 1) if you don't understand sushi, sushi etiquette and the difference between proper sushi and the bastardized American version, just stay home and leave more of the good stuff for me. 2) cheap sushi is like cheap plastic surgery.....don't skimp, go for the good stuff. 3) if you can't open your mind to something new then just go to McDonalds. My wife and I have had sushi around the world at places like Nobu, Blue Ribbon, Koi and others. Kanda delivers a scaled down, simple version that is actually a GREAT DEAL for what you get! For the money, Kanda is probably one of the best sushi restaurants I've ever been to. What you are getting is super fresh, thoughtfully prepared, authentic sushi from a master sushi chef. This may not be familiar to you if you are used to mass-market sushi and if you like that better, fine, free country. But don't bash something due to your ignorance. Not all sushi "melts" in your mouth and some fish have unique flavors, but that isn't the fish or the restaurant's fault. I don't expect to like everything new I try because that is life. My advice is to go, sit at the sushi bar, interact with the super nice and funny chef and try something new. The Uni and Scallop are some of the best I've ever had. If you want a Philly roll or think California rolls are the high-point of sushi, please dine accordingly. read more

Ate here last night, the sushi quality was excellent however the selection was lacking. The highlight was the bluefin tuna which was fantastic. The other selections on the menu were tasty but not as creative as other sushi restaurants. The restaurant is also very small so may not be the best choice for a large party. This is my favorite Sushi place in the country! My family and I have been getting Sushi from Mitsu since I was born at every place he has opened. The flavors are the best and the fish is always fresh. At Kanda they go out of their way to make sure you get authentic and beautiful Sushi dishes and Mitsu has some dishes that I have never been able to find at other sushi restaurants. If you love sushi come here. If you have ever been to Japan then you will appreciate this place. This is not some Americanized Sushi Bar with rolls named after pop culture icons. For my taste, this is the best in the area. Not really a kids sushi place, so get a sitter. Omakase was excellent and reasonable with several Japanese selections. Sauces, when used, were restrained and perfectly executed. The sushi rice was expertly seasoned and notably delicious. My wife and I went to Kanda for lunch based on the Yelp reviews, we sat at the sushi bar and as the one reviewer said they are the most comfortable seats. The sushi chef was pleasant and we ordered from the lunch menu . Also I did a "check in" to Yelp and a coupon popped up and I displayed it to the chef and we got two pieces of the best tasting Albacore for free. GF and I went on the hunt for a new place to have dinner about a week ago. Drove by Kanda, and decided to turn around and check it out. We were a little skeptical at first, as we were the only ones in the place, but were seated anyway. The decor is very simple, yet elegant. A clean, comfortable place to enjoy a meal and conversation. The staff was very friendly and helpful, and service was great. The menu leans towards traditional japanese fair, no fancy rolls or smoke and mirrors here. We started off simple, to test the waters so to speak, and the waters were good. The miso soup was tasty, and included a mussel, which was a new twist for us. We ordered a spicy tuna roll, spicy tuna crispy rice, tuna and salmon sushi, spicy rock shrimp and Kobe beef Kushiyaki. Everything was beyond our expectations, and we will definitely visit Kanda again, next time going deeper into the menu. We sat on the bar table, he recommended us some fresh sushi (sorry I can't remember the names), with soft crab, fresh squid and yellowtail. They tasted so good. And he warned us everything when the hot dish was coming, he was so worried that we might get burned. 2) The sushi--they are so fresh. From the presentation, you can tell that chef put alot effort into the cooking. You dont need to dip the sauce, you can just taste the freshness. :) 3) The price is reasonable. This is the place that I could really enjoy some good quality sushi without worrying about my wallet. I will go back again very soon. :) read more

Go here! Not only is the food AMAZING but the service is unparalleled. Chef Mitsu is incredibly friendly, knowledgeable, skilled, and entertaining. The waitresses have always been exceedingly nice and quick, and the restaurant itself is relaxing and clean. Everything we've tried on the menu from the sushi to the rolls to the skewers and dessert has been absolutely wonderful. While it's not "bargain-priced" sushi, the quality you get for the price is really outstanding. In fact, this is one of the only restaurants my boyfriend and I save up for on special occasions.
