Fresh catch of the day (marlin)

Amazing lunch at Kapa Hale yesterday! My first time coming here and it's a cute restaurant tucked away on the back side of Kahala Mall. All the dishes and drinks we ordered were amazing. The chef is very innovative in the types of ingredients used and combinations of flavors. My favorite dish was the kalo hummus dip. Delicious! Though it looked like there was only one waiter working when we went with multiple tables to service, our server was really great. Would go again.

We've been wanting to check out Kapa Hale for a while now and they have really good reviews, but unfortunately we weren't sarisfied with the dishes. When we first walked in no one was to be seen in the kitchen or at the host stand, we thought it was closed but then saw a couple sitting in the dining room to the left. Took a few minutes to be greeted and seated. We ordered what the waitress suggested. Appetizer - $8 for 2 pieces of corn bread, corny bread , one came out overly grills so tasted burnt and pretty much overpowered any flavors of the butter/ honey. And the larger piece was the burnt one. Entrees- Keakas Fried chicken , comes with rice and very little pickles, $20. The chicken had a good crisp to it and was nice and juicy but the sauce was disappointing. Sauce on the menu says soy, honey, garlic. The soy sauce tasted really dark, didn't taste any garlic or honey and pretty much ruined the taste of the dish. KH burger- $20 burger was odd shaped and bigger than the bun, which was impressive at first but it was ordered medium and when cut open it was more like a rare to medium rare. Very red inside and due to the size of it seemed even more rare. It would also look way better with green or butter lettuce. Maybe it was just an off day or we ordered the wrong items...

Ambiance and service was good but.... some of the food served there was just terrible..... idk if it's the chef working today but the Hawaiian Cubano was absolutely terrible!! No flavor at all, just flavorless mush inside. The chips were the worst house made chips I've ever ate... no flavor either.... The fresh catch was just bland.

Excellent restaurant with fresh ingredients, unique and delicious menu, and awesome service. We started off with appetizers of the Arancini, which was delicious topped with Parmesan stuffed with butternut squash delicious. we also had the pumpkin loaf with guava butter, and the cornbread with delicious lilikoi honey butter. I had the avocado toast, which was delicious, husband had the burger which he loved, sisters got the Hawaiian Cubano, which they absolutely loved because it was stuffed with lau lau Kalua pork, cheese topped with an egg. Green salad was also delicious and fresh with organic ingredients. They have an absolute wide range of drink wine menu. Service was off the charts.

Ambiance here is very nice came for the first time during lunch and I will say I do prefer their lunch menu over the dinner. This will be the freshest tikka masala you will taste every aspect is amazing love the acidity, taste and texture! The fried risotto balls were very fun as I've never tried it that way before but I was missing the spicy aspect they listed on the menu but still delicious, their beef tartare was VERY mushroom forward, didn't taste much acidity and the cut of meat was a little fatty but I still enjoyed. Not pictured: kalua pork eggs Benedict was very good wish there was a little more pork though. I love this place everything tastes very homemade with love and fresh!

We had a wonderful lunch! Comfortably busy, this restaurant supports the local community while serving great food with great service. Everything has a creative flair with familiar dishes. All at a great value. Every dish we had was so reasonably priced. Lots of good food to choose from. Variety of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks to choose from. Kapa Hale never disappoints.

Kapa Hale is an award winning restaurant nestled in the Kahala neighborhood of Honolulu, HI. Chef-owner Keaka Lee has an extensive culinary experience. To name a few: 3660 on the Rise, Alan Wong's Restaurant, and Gramercy Tavern (New York). Today, he and his wife, Heather Smith Lee are the backbones of KH. The menu options are in constant updates. Today, we settled on three KH favorites. The Okonomiyaki Omelette, Da Weekender Burger and KFC Chicken and Waffle. Our awesome server Ethan explained each dish and what dishes were the most popular. Chef Lee was so kind to visit our table to check on us! Really great personality and he even took a picture with us! Now onto the dishes: The Okonomiyaki (Japanese translation is "grilled to your liking") omelette was filled with tasty and chewy noodles, cheddar cheese, lomi lomi ( Hawaiian word meaning "to knead or rub") tomatoes, shredded cabbage, aioli and bonito flakes (paper-thin shavings of dried, fermented, and smoked skipjack tuna ). This dish is savory and sweet, filled with chewy noodles. 4/5 stars. Da Weekender Burger is a local grass fed beef patty, teriyaki glaze, cheddar omelette, bacon, tomato, garlic aioli and chips combo! Local teriyaki flavor with unique cheddar omelette is a a foodie's delight. You will not leave hungry. 5/5 stars The KFC (Korean Fried Chicken) and Waffle is a bestseller here at Kapa Hale. Crispy on the outside and moist tender meat on the inside. Waffles were delicious. This combination of savory and sweet will fill your happy tummy. No wonder it's a favorite here. 5/5 stars Bathrooms are available inside the restaurant. Handicap toilet is also available here. A small free parking lot with handicap parking is also available at Kahala Korner. I used a credit card and I did not observe any cc surcharges or kitchen fees. I provided cash for the tip. Thank you Ethan! Five star service here. Update: I visited here again on 04/12/26 with my daughter who was visiting us from California. We ordered the pancake of the month (Haupia/coconut sauce, toasted coconut flakes and whipped butter ). 4/5 stars. Although this item may look super sweet and decadent, the Haupia/coconut sauce was not overwhelmingly sweet! The toasted coconut flakes gave the pancakes a nice layer of crunchy texture. Pancakes are fluffy and soft. 4.5 stars. Arancini-3 pieces of fried risotto balls, Mozzarella, Basil, Parmesan cheese and spicy tomato. 3/5 stars. Not my favorite. Somewhat bland and I did not care for the texture and taste. Other family members enjoyed this dish. Green Eggs & Ham. Kole's Farm Green Garlic Verde, Soft scrambled eggs, Grilled pork belly & white rice. This was delicious! A five star dish. Pork belly was cooked to perfection. Crispy on the outside and juicy and tender on the inside. Not over seasoned and although the eggs looked runny and unusual, it was eggcellent! Can I give extra stars?! Enjoyed strong coffee and unsweetened Plantation Iced tea with our meals. Coffee is refilled. We lucked out with a repeat 5 star service from Ethan! Thanks again!

    Blackened steak fir $75

I was really looking forward to eating here with so many great reviews, but am very disappointed that the food and service didn't live up to the hype. The drink order took a very long time. Ordered the $75 larger steak portion, not hot, and a piece was burned charred black, shouldn't have been on the plate. They offered to redo, but near the end of our meal. The sauce and green beans were delicious, though. The eggplant tempura wasn't even crispy and had, too much batter, not a typical tempura at all! The tako was delicious, though. The curry noodles on the set menu was too acidic. The dessert was taken to-go, opened it up at home, and it was a tiny sliver of a portion! Very disappointing experience!

V is for Vegetable Trio: Gazpacho, Falafel, Croquette
    Crystal R.

I heard great things about Kapa Hale from my friend, so the boyfriend and I decided to give it a try. The experience had some high points, but the food was a hit-or-miss for me. FOOD: I ordered the Spring Tasting Menu curated by chef. The first course, "V is for Vegetable Trio" consisted of gazpacho (a bit tart but somewhat expected from the mango, though I couldn't detect jalapeno), falafel made from edamame (crispy on the outside and moist/dense on the inside but the tzatziki lean more tart than what I personally enjoy), and croquette (nice and crispy, which ended the course on a high note). The second course was "Alfredo Pasta La Vista, Baby". After a few bites, the dish was a little too salty for my taste. I was hoping the mushrooms, broccolini, and pasta would help balance things out, but the saltiness remained dominant flavor throughout. Even the recommended wine pairing didn't seem to complement the dish. The third course (dessert), "Let's Get Nutz" was probably my favorite as it had a great balance of sweetness and texture. My boyfriend ordered "Naan Ya Business" for his appetizer and enjoyed it. Though the naan was thinner than what I'm used to, the tikka masala was bold, colorful, and packed with flavor. The entree he selected was "You Chick'n Me Out." The chicken itself could have benefitted from a few more minutes of roasting. As for the calamansi malunggay salsa verde, it didn't quite work out for either of us. Having grown up with both calamansi and malunggay, I'm familiar with their flavors, but the interpretation felt a bit overly tart and didn't quite hit the mark. SERVICE: Service was excellent. Our server was attentive, friendly, and helpful in guiding us through the menu since it was our first visit. They checked in regularly and geniuinely seemed to care about our experience. When I informed the server that I wasn't thrilled about my entree, he offered a complimentary dessert, which I didn't expect and was a thoughtful gesture. One of the owners stopped by our table to discuss our feedback. I appreciated and respected that they took the time to engage with us directly. AMBIANCE: Kapa Hale does a nice job in creating a cozy setting. The lighting is dim enough for a date night while still feeling welcoming for small family gatherings. I also enjoyed the open kitchen concept and watching the team work behind the scenes. PARKING: It's a small lot shared with other neighboring businesses. One small tip: avoid parking under the trees unless you don't mind unexpected surprises from the birds. Overall, I can see the creativity and ambition behind the menu and the staff clearly cares about the guest experience. While a few dishes missed the mark for me personally, there are enough positives that I'd be open to give this place another try in the future.

    Kapa-Kahi Salad

Kapa Hale is located down the road from Kahala Mall, but fair warning: the entrance to the parking lot is very easy to miss if you're not paying attention. Learn from my mistake! If you turn the corner on Pahoa Avenue like most people do and head into the lot, you're actually going the wrong way. Parking is also limited and shared with other businesses, so please plan accordingly. I made reservations for 12:00 pm and was seated right away. My friend and I chose to sit outside since the weather wasn't too hot, which ended up being a great choice. And better yet, we had the area all to ourselves! We were served water promptly and took our time looking over the brunch menu. Honestly, everything sounded so good that we couldn't decide, so we asked our server for recommendations. We were told the pancake of the day (blueberry), chicken & waffles, and the Kapa-Kahi salad were popular choices especially the salad if we wanted something lighter. We ended up sharing the pancakes and the salad, and wow the salad completely stole the show. It was absolutely delicious, made with fresh (and crunchy!) local greens, pickled turnips, roasted beets, and tossed in a cider vinaigrette. Every bite was so good that I honestly wished I had ordered my own plate. The pancakes were just okay in comparison. They were nice and fluffy, topped with blueberries, crumble, whipped butter, and maple syrup, but if I had to choose, I'd pick the salad every time. This was my fourth time eating here, and service and food wait times have always been on point. Would I come back and support this company? Absolutely!

2024, 2025 Open Table Diners' Choice for a reason Parking: small lot in front, can opt for street parking or nearby kahala mall if full Service: table service. Chef-Owner Keaka Lee made rounds to each table which really elevated and personalized the experience Ambiance: family dinners, date night, dinner with friends Food: all are excellent. would recommend the Where's Da Beef pasta and their signature Lei Po'o salad

Met my girlfriend here for lunch. She always recommends places to go I haven't tried before and when I read the reviews, it looked interesting. Surprising I haven't seen it before since its near Kahala Mall but its a few streets back from the mall, on the same street as the Kahala Post Office. There is parking in front of the restaurant. We shared three dishes. We thought we might order more dishes later or have dessert but we had more than enough to eat and some to take home too! Appetizer was Naan Ya Business, fresh garlic nann and tikka masala curry. The naan bread was crispy, almost like a cracker and both the naan and the curry were delicious. We also had the Kapa-Kahi salad, a colorful mix of local greens, with pickled turnips, and roasted beets, and a side of garlic shrimp. The salad was refreshing. The shrimp was tasty but a little messy since it had the shell on. After reading other reviews jI wanted to try KFC Keaka's Fried Chicken with soy honey garlic and rice. The chicken was kind of like karaage chicken but the sauce was a bit salty for my taste. Our waitress was friendly and gave us good service. I liked the ambiance, the place had a cozy feel to it. The menu had lots of interesting dishes I want to try when I come back.

Our last meal in Hawaii - a great way to end our vacation. The lomi salmon was fresh and added a great cold to our hot dishes. The ribs were tender and paired wonderfully with the white onion. The lau lau reminded me of southern collard greens - tender and delicious. The butterfish was my favorite. It was crispy and full of flavor. The haupia was complementary and it was soft and delicious - not too sweet. Service was quick and friendly. They explain how to eat each dish and what to pair it with. I was looking forward to eating at Helena's Hawaiian Food, but unfortunately my experience with the…read moreservice was incredibly disappointing. When ordering, I mentioned that I probably wouldn't be able to finish all of my food and would take the rest to go. Because I said that, I was told I would NOT be allowed to eat inside the restaurant and that my entire order had to be takeout. I was honestly shocked. I was a paying customer ordering a full meal and simply said I would take whatever I couldn't finish with me--which is something people do at restaurants every day. I even added a 20% tip to my order. I tried to explain the misunderstanding at the front counter. I explained that I absolutely wanted to eat my meal there; I was only saying that because I knew I wouldn't be able to finish everything, I wanted to take my leftovers with me afterward. The employee at the front counter with tattoos refused to hear my explanation. Her answer was completely black-and-white: either my order was "to go" OR I could eat it there. There was no willingness to listen to what I was actually saying or resolve what should have been a very simple misunderstanding. Their customer service model simply doesn't make any sense to me. Why should a paying customer be forced to choose between eating their entire meal inside or ordering everything to go simply because they know in advance that they'll need a container for their leftovers? Taking home food you don't finish is an ordinary part of dining at a restaurant. I wasn't asking for anything unusual or special. I simply wanted to sit down, eat the food I had purchased, and take whatever I couldn't finish with me afterward. The interaction felt unnecessarily rude and incredibly unwelcoming. I had specifically come here because I wanted to experience a well-known local Hawaiian restaurant, and instead I was made to feel like I wasn't welcome to sit down and eat the food I had just purchased--even after leaving a 20% tip. Unfortunately, I never even got the opportunity to enjoy the restaurant because of how I was treated. Very disappointing experience and definitely not the kind of hospitality I expected.

Our server was very helpful and even brought out a pamphlet explaining each dish. After reading it over, the three of us decided to each try one of the signature Hawaiian combo plates. LAU LAU COMBO (PORK) - 22.99 + poi + lomi salmon The set came out in cafeteria-style trays, almost like a grade school lunch. Our server recommended eating the main entree and lomi salmon with poi, a fermented taro paste. Judging by how it looked, I thoroughly expected the poi to be sweet, but it was actually much more sour, almost like yogurt. I didn't enjoy it too much on its own, but it worked incredibly well with the pork lau lau. The pork was mostly tender and juicy, with a fragrant, leafy steamed flavor that reminded me of the Chinese zong zi my mom makes. The leaner parts of the pork were a bit dry, but the steamed taro leaves helped. The lomi salmon (salted salmon mixed with onions and tomatoes) was refreshing, although the pungent raw onions were a bit much for me. The 'uala (steamed sweet potatoes) had a natural, earthy sweetness that we all enjoyed. Lastly, the haupia (coconut pudding) was incredibly tasty, with a strong coconut flavor that made me sad when I took my last bite. One of my friends got the chicken lau lau, which we actually enjoyed even more. The chicken was delicious, and there was so much of it. Overall, we enjoyed getting to try some authentic Hawaiian dishes at Highway Inn, especially our server and the pamphlet gave us a better understanding of what we were eating.

It had that relaxed, home-style feeling where you could just sit down, eat, and enjoy yourself. Now let's talk about the food! I had the BBQ chicken with rice and salad, and that chicken was so tender! The barbecue sauce was absolutely delicious, and surprisingly, that salad was GOOD too. I loved the dressing they served with it. The hubby went more traditional and ordered the Lau Lau with pork, which gave us exactly what we came for, a chance to experience Hawaiian food while we were here. But y'all... I have to mention something completely random. THE COKE! I don't know what was going on with that Coke, but it tasted like Coke used to taste back in the day! I kept saying, "Now THIS tastes like a Coke!" Sometimes it really is the little things. The service was great. Our server was friendly, attentive, and made the whole experience easy and enjoyable. No complaints at all. As far as value, absolutely worth what we paid. Good food, good portions, friendly service, and a relaxed atmosphere. 4.5/5 Would we go back? Definitely. Especially if we wanted another casual spot for Hawaiian comfort food. And shout-out to the tattoo artist because she definitely didn't steer us wrong on this one!

I didn't expect much from this small corner diner, but everything turned out real solid! The exterior is especially entrancing, with its bright, rainbow neon sign that glows out the darkness of the night! The hooded interior was clean and followed well with the rainbow theme, especially with its rainbow pastel, title wallpaper. I would also like to compliment the workers, who were very nice and approachable! We ordered the loco moco plate, mixed plate, and saimin. Both plates were very filling and came in huge portions! The plates are for sure a top choice if you want a nice, hearty dinner! I especially enjoyed my loco moco! The saimin was less filling and came in an instant noodle cup. Still yet, it wasn't half bad--and it actually seems like a fairly good piece if you are on a diet or budget; it wasn't as expensive as the other dishes and only came out as 220 calories! I also want to note that they have a variety of tasty dessert pastries and icee treats if you are looking for a treat after your dinner. Overall, I would say this is a great diner to try if you've got a big appetite and are looking for something to share with a friend or family! Great vibes and great Hawaiian plate meals!

And we just can't go here anymore unless changes are made! We used to prefer them over Zippy's, but now they are less than 7-Eleven quality, while charging higher-end prices for the neighborhood. We have given them many chances, hoping it was just a fluke, but we have repeatedly been disappointed. Their chicken has become chewy and fatty, their rice is mediocre, and condiments such as mayonnaise are stripped down to the bare minimum quantity. Chile is poured so lightly that it is practically a minuscule amount. And their prices have continued to rise. I don't know if greedy people took over the restaurant who just don't care anymore, or what is going on. I remember when I used to take people here, and they would be impressed with the quality and quantity--plates just heaping with good cuts of meat, noodles, and rice. Those days are no more. As they say in Japan, the price performance is poor. Furthermore, their staff is rude. I can only imagine it was an owner working this day because it was a face I haven't seen that often. An older gentleman who appeared to be of Okinawan descent, working the cashier register, accosted us because I was privately discussing with my family about splitting different items with them. We were all ordering something, so he wasn't losing any money, but he told us about how prices are double in Waikīkī. First of all, it is rude to interrupt your customers that way. Secondly, we don't go to Waikīkī or care about Waikīkī. What happened to serving the locals? Third, Waikīkī has an assortment of restaurants, prices, and qualities, and they shouldn't be how you base your services. Lastly, I guarantee I could find a better deal in Waikīkī if I wanted to. Next time you're in the area, just go get a $6 bento or a $5 burrito from 7-Eleven next door. I assure you, the price performance and experience will be better. If Rainbow Drive-In is in the business of comparing themselves to other things, let's compare them to 7-Eleven and at least try to be better than them, right? I can get mochiko chicken from 7-Eleven for $6.99 that is similar in portion size and better quality. Meanwhile, they are serving their fatty, dry chicken for $16.75. Highway robbery! And they are not fancy, with their dirty picnic tables and plastic cutlery. They are just a step above a food truck, if that. Save yourself from the hype. They have gone downhill like a landslide. Go elsewhere.

It moves steadily though, and it is worth it. Inside is tiny, just one small table, so this is really an order and go kind of place rather than somewhere to sit and eat. They have every musubi combination you could think of, unagi, avocado, cucumber, egg, bacon, ume, tofu skin, shrimp, you name it. I got the tuna mayo onigiri and wished they had packed in a little more tuna filling, but it was still tasty. I also tried the cucumber spam musubi, which was really good too. We came as a group of seven and everyone ordered something different, and everyone loved every bite. My tip: get at least two musubis per person. A few people in our group got four each and had zero regrets. One thing to know ahead of time is parking. It is street parking only and pretty limited, so plan for that if you are driving. Overall such an easy, yummy stop and a great local experience in Waikiki.

We decided to come back the next day and order the "Double Tuna," thinking it would actually have double the tuna. Instead, it seemed like the same small amount of tuna with double the rice! We ordered around eight of them, so it was especially disappointing to find that they were mostly rice. The portions just don't feel balanced. If someone pays extra for "Double Tuna," they're expecting more tuna, NOT extra rice. Unfortunately, it felt like they were really skimping on the filling, and the quality didn't live up to the hype for us.

There was only simple bench seating and high-top counter tables with no chairs. We loved that we could sample some before making a choice. POKE BOWL +2 for white rice Since poke is charged by the pound, I went crazy. "A bit more!" I would say, after one gigantic scoop. I got a scoop-plus of both ahi shoyu and "old school" ahi, which is seasoned simply with sesame oil and salt. I ended up with about 0.7 pounds of fish (both 29.99/lb), which came out to around $22. The rice wasn't great since it was a bit mushy and clumpy, but the star of the show was the fresh tuna. The "old school" ahi was my favorite for its simplicity and addictive sesame flavor. It's one I could easily enjoy without rice. The shoyu was also great, but it got a bit too saucy and overwhelming after a few bites. Overall, I truly enjoyed eating all that fresh poke. It was easily my favorite poke of the trip. ICED LILIKOI PASSION TEA - 5 I asked for less sweet, and it was perfect. It was refreshing and smooth, making it great to sip on whenever I needed a break from the intensity of the poke. I'm so glad I got this to pair with my bowl. Next time, I'll get a poke bowl with the "old school" ahi and furikake salmon. I tried my friend's salmon, and it was nutty and umami-forward, with fatty, rich salmon that I really enjoyed.
