Japanese and American Wagyu, assorted condiments, rice, and miso soup

Came back to Kappo Kappo for a second time about two months after the first, and loved seeing that a lot of the feedback I had last time was addressed - music was intentionally turned down each time a course is introduced, pace also seemed less hectic (granted, the first time I went they were down a pair of hands). Menu was largely the same but I anticipated that, quality was still superb. Since then, they have updated the menu - good to see seasonality and variety!

Kappo Kappo offers the perfect dining experience for celebrating a special occasion. Their unique Japanese-French menu makes it feel worth the splurge, especially since this style of cuisine feels so personal to the chef's upbringing in Paris. From the moment we arrived, the experience felt immersive, intimate, and thoughtfully planned. We were greeted by the host, then introduced to our server and mixologist before the chef formally introduced himself and shared his background story. It set the tone for a meal that felt intentional from start to finish. Throughout the evening, each dish flowed beautifully, and we were pleasantly surprised from one course to the next. The beef bourguignon was the dish I was most looking forward to since it's one of my favorite classic French dishes to make at home, and their take on it was so special. It truly tasted like a warm hug on a plate. I also usually don't care much for desserts during omakase-style meals, but theirs was refreshing and the perfect way to end the night. My only note is that mid-meal, servers offered us the daily special, which was Hokkaido uni with ikura and caviar. It would have been helpful to know upfront that it was a $50 add-on because, while it was good, I personally wouldn't have felt great paying $50 for a single bite of uni. I have also heard from friends that they personally didn't feel like the add ons were worth it, and wished transparency in pricing. All in all, Kappo Kappo is definitely worth the splurge for a special occasion, and I'm really glad we got to try it.

Black cod is cold, salmon bit in middle super fishy tasting in off putting way

First visit here was great but our second experience at this elevated omakase type french/Japanese restaurant was not good. The overall problem is that each course is prepared en masse for the entire 22 person restaurant and then served at one time. So the time from preparation to eating each course is so long that menu items that should be served chilled like uni is warm and warm items like chawanmushi, steak, sushi rice, basically everything is cold by the time you eat it. The uni was prepped and placed in front of us below the counter for a good 20 minutes getting warm and melting before it was served to us! Why not prep/serve in shifts without waiting for everything?? Also, the Nigerian tuna was sinewy, the piece I got was not cut properly (see photo). The chawanmushi was too fishy and not from the trout roe as was the salmon bite on the plate of 1 bite items. Another off putting experience was how the kitchen staff cleans the entire kitchen in view of guests before the dessert is served. As a guest, I don't want to see the cutting board washed with soap (see photos) and dishes clanging as they are cleaned in my presence. Certainly not at a very expensive experience. Prepping each course fornthe entire restaurant and then serving en masse is not working.

Worth the splurge! You are required to pay in full for the reservation at booking just FYI.. Service and execution was well done! We enjoyed every course. Highlight for me was the potato foam and potato skin crumble on the boeuf bourguignon. The wagyu was also amazing! Crab chawanmushi (steamed custard eggs) was yummy too. I appreciate the explanation of every dish as they were served. They had hokkaido uni a la carte, I did opt for it, can't say no to uni. Drinks were ok, I'm not a sake person. Entrance is through the Proper Hotel entrance, to the right after you enter the hotel.

Tucked inside Austin Proper Motel this restaurant provides an intimate experience with a specialized dining experience. The servers and bar staff ensure your drinks are and food experience are amazing. The hard part of this review, is I have bad better food. I was also disappointed that there was only one other couple during our sitting time, but the head chef only spoke to them. Perhaps it is because my friend and I did the pescatarian option, which cost the same amount as the experience with the wagyu. While others may find the entire night amazing, I have had much better when visiting my hometown of Chicago as recent as 4 weeks prior and at half the cost. Note they automatically include a wellness charge and 20% gratuity. Having worked in the service industry, I get offended when these amounts are added. While I normally tip more that 20%, when I see the gratuity automatically added, I refuse to tip more.

While the food is still unique and the chef brothers are very talented the experience this time was different than my first. Both times I sat at the counter but this time I noticed more long delays in timing of food so items got cold and lots of clamoring of kitchen items. I also felt that the service staff fully ignored some customers and catered to the influencer crowd. The majority were offered complementary sparkling wine yet we were not despite it being a birthday celebration and we often had to ask for more water or drink refills. Additionally, we were always served the food last being in the corner location yet our plates were always picked up first so we often felt hurried while others were able to enjoy their plates and visit. The menu was also almost identical to the one we ate 5 months ago. For over $250pp plus drinks and tip, the experience did not match my previous one or meet expectations this time.

Kappo Kappo was such a special experience, left me speechless. The entire place has an incredible vibe: intimate, stylish, and perfect for celebrating something memorable. It is on the pricier end but it was worth it. From the moment we walked in, the chefs (who are twins!) were so warm and welcoming. They were incredibly sweet, courteous, and made the whole experience feel personal. What really stood out was how intentional every single dish was. They were all so beautifully decorated too. You can tell so much thought goes into the flavor combinations, each component complements and balances the other beautifully. Nothing felt random, every bite felt carefully crafted. The Japanese wagyu completely melted in my mouth. I actually loved that they paired it with American wagyu as well, which added a nice balance and contrast. And the seared fatty tuna was unforgettable: smoky, buttery, and incredibly flavorful. Definitely can't wait to come back! I initially wasn't sure if adding truffle would be worth the extra cost, but honestly it ended up being such a fun part of the experience. Watching them absolutely shower your plate with truffle was hilarious and indulgent--definitely a "make it rain" moment. Overall, such a thoughtful and memorable dining experience. Amazing food, amazing hospitality, and a perfect spot for a celebration.

Located inside on the first floor of the Proper hotel. Excellent service, even better food. This is a hidden gem. I'm glad I got to eat here before the word gets out. Wouldn't be surprised if they get on the Michelin list at some point.

What an amazing French-inspired omekase dinner experience this was! We ended up splurging, and two of us got the wine pairing and another got the sake. I also tried the strawberry Sakura cocktail and it was outstanding. Very personal experience at the chefs table, with each of the head chefs as well as their team members coming to speak to us about each course and the sommelier shared her knowledge about the sake and wines. It would not have been the same experience if we had been sitting at regular tables vs chefs table, so I encourage you to go when that seating is available. We loved the upscale modern vibe that drew upon Japanese influences. Not for the budget conscious. All in all, dinner, wine pairing, and cocktail was over $400 for one, but worth it if you're in the mood for a special treat.

Kappo Kappo is the new it-spot in town for the fancy meal that may as well have the potential to change the way you see food. Kappo, meaning to cut / cook, is rightly named after the twins Haru & Gohei's philosophy to showcase the many ways food can be prepared. Whether it's a snack, an aperitif, sushi, braised, grilled, or whatever it may be, you are bound to get a journey of Japanese cuisine prepared in a very technically French way. These two Japanese chefs hail from France and spent a good 7 or so years in Japan with a love of both specialized and local ingredients executed in ways learned from both countries. Examples of the tasting menu include salmon mi cuit, a gougère with A5 wagyu and caviar, pecan-based yakimiso to pair with the most tender A5 wagyu, and a chawanmushi that beats the rest in Austin (even places with a higher price tag). Whatever you get out of the 11 or so courses are bound to be delicious and a perfect blend of French and Japanese roots. Cocktails run a little pricey, but they are made with a great balance. There is a sake or wine pairing with a very fair price to add onto. The surroundings look out of an Architectural Digest magazine with an appreciation for great serveware and lighting that could make me believe it's some type of Noguchi lamp. The service is impeccable while the two are warm, friendly, conversational, educational, and excited to share the menu with you. Expect to see this place on everyone's recommendations list soon!

I usually love a fine dining, omakase experience but over $700 for 2 people was just not worth it. Every dish, except the A5 waygu, was just OK. When paying this amount money I expect to be wowed with each bite. The brothers fun and exciting personalities made me want to love it but we just did not. There are plenty of other fine dining options in the city that are worth the splurge.

Excellent all around. Service was great. Attention to detail was spot on. Atmosphere was energetic, but noise was still moderate. Chairs were very comfortable. It is a very lively service. Food was the star, and was delighted by fusion of French and Japanese cuisine. Overall my favorite restaurant in Austin.

Thankfully, most a very good choices! The fries are great. It's weird to start with that but they really are. Same goes for pretty much any sushi. You'll be able to taste the freshness of the fish. However, avoid the curry and katsu. My katsu can only be described as overdone. The breading tasted nearly burnt dry and banding in the meat (see my photo) shows how it was separating from being cooked too long. The curry is as disappointing as their sister restaurant. It's weak enough that I'd venture I could produce a better curry in bulk. Their menu also changes between lunch and dinner so it's possible other non sushi options are better. So do come here and enjoy the sushi, but don't venture into the other menu items. They'd really shine by focusing on a core menu with less accompanying dishes.

Someone recently asked me where my favorite steak was, and I struggled to come up with an answer. Not anymore. It's here. We tried several dishes, and almost everything was a total hit. The only thing I might skip next time is the taiyaki cornbread, maybe. Let's start with the absolute standout: the wagyu short rib skewer. It's sous vide for 48 hours, and I am not exaggerating when I say it was the best meat I have ever had. Ever. If you only order one thing, make it that. Now, let's keep going because it's all great stuff and you need to know what to order. Second place is the chili cheese takoyaki. Don't overthink it, just order it and thank me later. The Hot Pocketz come in third. Not quite as mind blowing as the wagyu, but still a must order. Last on my list was the chashu pork belly, which is still really good, just competing with absolute heavy hitters. I was stuffed and had to order it to go, but If you have room for dessert, the banana pudding is worth it. For drinks, my husband had 2 different sakes and some Japanese whiskey and really liked them. And the decor deserves its own mention, it's like Cracker Barrel meets sexy Japan in the best possible way. It's fun, a little chaotic, and totally unforgettable. And shoutout to Yoshi, our server, who made the whole experience even better. He helped steer us toward the best dishes. Our bill at the end of the night was $88, not bad for all that we ordered. A few tips: make a reservation, ask for Yoshi if you can, and go early because parking is a real pain. Most importantly, get the wagyu short rib skewer.

I must have driven by this restaurant whenever I was on Parmer for like 15 years ... and never got…read morearound to going in. When I finally did, I discovered one of the best Japanese restaurants in Austin. Okay ... if you are going to pay $600 for an omikase then the omikase place is better. The tasting menu at Uchi is better. But if you just want Japanese without paying a gold brick and taking out a second mortgage on your house, Miyo Yakitori and Sushi is pretty damm fine. * * * a) Japanese curry is a utility dish in most Japanese restaurants ... and when you get down to it, in most Japanese homes. It is often what you serve on "cheap" night. Airport hotels offer it as the "free dinner" for tired travellers. The curry sauce itself here is standard issue. But they serve it with a Pork Katsu the size of Williamson county. And it is a very good Pork Katsu. That Katsu was good from Liberty Hill to Thrall and from Hester's Crossing to Jarrell. b) My carnivorous partner's Fireball Udon with Shellfish blew him away. Temperature wise and aesthetic pleasure wise. He raved about how good his udon was all the way home. c) Service was instantaneous. I think there was some sort of event horizon distortion of the space time continuum that allowed them to prepare the food and then go back in time and deliver it within a minute of it being ordered. Both of us were impressed. d) The service staff was as nice as any human beings could possibly be. * * * Great food. Great service. The folks who live in the apartment complex that Miyo is in are very lucky people indeed. Either the apartments are lovely and they get Miyo on top of that. Or the apartments are terrible, but they can still spend all their time in Miyo to compensate. Seems like a fair trade. **************** If you read the other reviews, There seems to be some controversy about this establishment. Miyo has fans and Miyo has haters. * * * Here is my read on the conflicting opinions: a) Earlier in the restaurant's history - Say about 2016, 17, or 18, The restaurant was not very good at all. I think at that time it had another name. b) There was a name change and quality went up. Sometimes when this happens there is an ownership change (or there is an owner who swaps out the management and cooking team to put in new blood.) However, things got fixed, they got fixed. c) Miyo's yakitori is apparently still not where it needs to be. I am not a huge Yakitori fan. If your broiled meat on a stick is not $80 an ounce Wagyu, Or amazing organ meats grilled in the Caucasus Barded with lamb fat and with farm fresh vegetables On another skewer for serious taste contrast ... If you are not at that high level, I don't want to pay for meat on a skewer. There are people who DO like Yakitori. They do NOT like the Miyo versions of that. * * * Yakitori is less than 20% of Miyo's menu. The rest is sushi or wonderful cooked dishes. Lay off the skewer food and you can do well here.
