I really appreciate being able to call on a Friday night for a Saturday evening meal. The service was amazing, the server was very attentive to our needs having 3 great-grandkids with different dietary requirements. It was appreciated that they switched out French fries for carrot sticks. Everyone walked, waddled, away from the table, very content with their meal. The portions and quality were priced appropriately for the service. We will definitely be visiting on some of our future and frequent trips to Redding. My family just had a fantastic meal at Karline's. We were looking for a nice dinner to celebrate our final night out on a 10-day road trip. The ambiance of any restaurant is important to us as it sets the mood of the night. There were very few photos on Yelp for Karline's to solidify if we went... but tracked one down online and it had a good feel. So we called over, and they were able to seat us 20 minutes later!! We had not been to Karline's for some time but decided to go for Mother's Day, actually we went the day before hoping we would avoid the crowd. It was a mistake the restaurant was way overcrowded, and the experience was very unpleasant due the noise level and the traffic as we were seated in the 'hallway.' I wonder if the fire department is okay with the crowd capacity for exiting if there is a fire. Honestly my experience in restaurants in the U.S. and abroad were never on any occasion as horribly noisy and overcrowded. The waiter covered the basics but clearly had no time to spare to provide quality service, after all the high prices include service, and the ambiance in a restaurant is also what you pay for. We wanted a pleasant easy-going experience but what we got was like being in a sports bar or ringside at an athletic event, it was unbearably loud and obnoxious, and we took some time after leaving to take a deep breath to shake off the chaotic experience, we had to struggle the whole time to hear each other over the noise. Yes, the food was good, with the exception of the lemon cake that alone gets one star, there was no discernable lemon flavor and overall tasteless. Still the only reason we have been there is for the food, but we have been there rarely, each time hoping for a better experience. We gave two stars for the food after subtracting for the unpleasant experience. It is unfortunate to see an owner who would appear to be more intent on the bottom line than providing a manageable pleasant dining experience; private large parties intermingled with dining and a bar crammed into an odd configuration of space is anything but desirable. Found this place on Yelp while visiting Redding for the day. Glad we tried it out! Lasagna came out hot and flavorful. Large portions so be ready to share or come with a completey empty stomach. Bruschetta had a little too much tomato and not enough balsamic. But the server brought us more and even some to go. IDK if they make their own, but the balsamic was amazing!! Giving this one five stars. The overall experience was great. The food is solid, if not very out-of-the-box. But old school food done well with good service equals five stars in my book. We have been on the hunt to try places since we moved to Redding last summer (if you haven't been to Redding it turns out it is kind of a cool little town with a very local vibe. Keep that to yourself please). Karlines is in a part of town that had me wondering if the GPS was broken. Don't look for a hip or classy location. This is not that place. The building is a low-slung brick place with a few windows. The kind of place you would drive by a dozen times and not think about it. The magic happens inside. Again, not at all fancy but the service is really great and BONUS POINTS: The bottles of wine are half price on Wednesday nights. Told the server that I could not drink that much at one meal (because hey we all have to keep up the image and anyone who has met me at a Yelp Elite event probably knows I could no problem) anyway she said she would cork whatever was left and I could take it home. So we all played along and I had a few glasses at dinner, she corked up the rest and put it in a little wine bag and I took it home and drank it while I watched TV. Anyway I digress. She took great care of us. As we get older my wife is convinced that we eat dinner at like 5 PM so we got there early and the place filled up quickly but our server was attentive throughout. The food? Well if you do not get a plate of the fried artichokes for an appetizer you are missing out. It is a pile of the most lightly fried artichokes I have ever had. With a tasty and bright aioli sauce on the side. A big serving so get one for the table. If you have to take some of them home (we did) I suggest reheating in an air fryer if you have one. They were almost as good the next night. My wife's pasta was good and the bistro filet had a great demi glace sauce and as this is an often overlooked cut of beef I was happy to see it on the menu. You have to try it. Visiting Redding we ran across this amazing place. Very busy so we had a bar seat by the kitchen. We ordered the Beef Stroganoff and the Apple walnut cranberry salad. Okay, I had slept on Karline's for awhile. Shame on me. I don't have a real reason why I hadn't tried it out but I've been missing out! It is such a great place. Since originally trying this place out, I have been back several times. They make good cocktails, they have a solid wine selection, and after multiple dinners here, I can confidently say that we have never had a bad or mediocre dish. The service is also always wonderful. It's such a bummer that it originally took me so long to try this place. The atmosphere is great for date nights or a relaxing weekday evening. This would also be a good place for a business lunch. I would recommend the Chicken Marsala or lasagna. Also, they have fabulous soups! The soups rotate but they typically always have minestrone. My Chicken Piccata was exceptional, my wife had Shrimp Scampi which she enjoyed very much. Our Steamed Clam appetizer was a delightful start to an exceptional dining experience. This little restaurant is not much to look at from the outside but once you come inside it is very quaint and comfortable. We were greeted by our server Hunter who was beyond professional advised us of the specials and made recommendations on his top picks. My wife had the salmon special and I had beef stroganoff both were fantastic. I forgot to mention the steamers as our appetizer that was as good as we have ever had from any large city. It's worth mentioning right off that the staff is amazing. They really set the mood for the evening. I was feeling indulgent so we ordered drinks, appetizers, dinner AND dessert. If I knew how delectable the steamer clams were going to be I would of skipped the bread they brought beforehand. That broth was AMAZING. I could eat just the calms and crostini for dinner and be completely satiated. Looking for a dressing other than ranch or balsamic? Don't sleep on their fig vinaigrette. Stepped out of my comfort zone and had the Snapper Piccata and linguine (I love chicken piccata). It was perfectly cooked and had great notes of lemon intertwined with the salty brine of the capers. Delicious. For dessert crème brûlée. Good custard and good technique with the sugar (Tap/Tap/Crack!). Other than that it wasn't notable. To Bruce G below, the tipping etiquette (should you agree with it or not) is based off the total price including complimentary items. So if you add back the $35 entree it appears they comped, and use that pre tax total, the suggested tips at the bottom of your receipt tie to the penny. They aren't tricking people it's just how the software works since tips are usually to be calculated off the total. In fact most restaurants calculate off the after tax total so good on them.
