Love katsu gin! Arrived ~10 min before opening on Saturday and got seated right when they opened. The food was delicious and the portions were huge. The katsu reminded me of the katsu in Japan. The hirekatsu was so moist and tender and worth the upgrade. The portions were huge too. Can't wait to come back.

Located in a small plaza, this cozy restaurant has a clean atmosphere and a handful of tables, but the wait usually isn't too bad. The staff were also super friendly and welcoming, which made the experience even better. Japanese comfort food done right. The chicken katsu curry set was easily the star of the table -- crispy cutlet over rice with thick, savory curry that had the perfect balance of sweetness and richness, and it came with a comforting bowl of miso soup. Even with the curry sauce, the katsu stayed crunchy to the last bite. The chicken katsu don brought a softer, homestyle vibe with fluffy egg, onions, and lightly sweet sauce soaking into the rice. Super comforting and satisfying without feeling too heavy. For appetizers, we tried the shrimp & vegetable katsu and the shrimp & oyster katsu. Everything came out hot and freshly fried with a light, crispy coating. The shrimp were juicy with a nice snap, while the oysters were rich and buttery inside with that perfect crunch outside. The miso soup and pickles rounded everything out nicely. If you're craving crispy katsu and hearty Japanese curry, this spot definitely hits the spot.

A friend and I came for dinner and I was surprised to see all the tables full. We were seated at the bar. The service was good, my friend and I were busy chatting and didn't have a chance to look at the menu but the server was kind and gave us a few more minutes to review before coming back for our order. I ordered the chicken katsu curry with rice and my friend ordered the fish katsu with rice. We also got shrimp and oyster katsu appetizer to share. All of our food was excellent. My chicken was crunchy on the outside and tender and juicy on the inside. The shrimp katsu was also cooked perfectly. Really crunchy and not at all dry inside. The curry flavor was great, not too strong. Everything paired so nicely with the Japanese rice. Next time I'd like to try a few more appetizers, so I'm looking forward to coming back soon!

I didn't think I would like this place as much as I did. One of my retired work moms recommended this place and we ate here with another friend on a Monday evening. They open at 5:30pm and we arrived at 5:45pm with only 1-2 tables filled. The place was packed by the time we left at 7! Eats: Takoyaki Popcorn Tofu Tonkatsu set Chicken Katsu Curry Shrimp & Veggie Katsu-Don Nice wait staff. They refill water as needed. The food took a bit longer than expected with the shrimp Katsu arriving first. I found it strange the appetizers arrived after the main entrees. Delicious though! I was so hungry I thought I'd scarf down some crispy tofu and takoyaki first, ended up taking bites between rice with tonkatsu. Omg so I loved the Japanese rice with the tonkatsu! Plus miso soup. Yah, I was uber hungry hahahaaa. I like how the regular tonkatsu meat is so lean but has plenty of meat. Excellent crunch without being so crispy it scrapes your mouth. It was perfect and not overly oily! I almost finished everything, just took home the last piece of pork with rice. I ate all the included cabbage salad with the creamy sesame dressing. My friend's chicken katsu curry was good too, solid Japanese curry. The katsu-don comes with scrambled egg between the rice and katsu. Will definitely come back when it's not busy. The place isn't cramped but it's not the largest either. Parking lot isn't too bad.

Ordered the chicken katsu curry, the chicken was nice and lightly crispy, the curry was lightly spicy but also a bit sweet. It was a bit underflavored and not as concentrated, it could have used more umami condensed deep flavor and even more spice. Service was alright, came with a friend but got asked to sit at a smaller table which was annoying because the restaurant wasn't full on a monday.

Katsu Gin is a very popular spot that focuses on crispy cutlets (ands shrimp) served with Japanese curry gravy. It gets very busy, so it helps to arrive early (even bestie they open) unless you are fine with waiting. The demand is high and the food lands well on the mark. The cutlets are satisfying and pair nicely with the curry, making for a solid, comforting meal. The shrimp is also crunchy and tasty. It may be a bit more hyped than it deserves to be, but it is still a place I enjoyed and would come back to.

Experience (5/5 stars): *Food: i'd recommend getting the hirekatsu over the tonkatsu as it was juicier and had better flavor! enjoyed the shredded cabbage salad, miso soup, and pickled sides. *Price: ~$20 katsu sets Overall, it's a yes for me!

Came a few months ago when they had just opened. The pictures looked promising, but we were a bit disappointed. Katsu was really dry and the sauces were just ok. Price and portion are ok, but we probably wouldn't come back. I usually love fried chicken skin, but these were also just ok, not great. We sat at the bar since it was busy, even though we came late at night near closing. Service was kinda slow, we had to ask a few times for water refill.

Was visiting the area for work and decided to get a to go order from Katsu Gin. The place was crowded but the server took my order and my food was ready quickly in about 10 minutes. I ordered Tonkatsu Curry. What I received was a huge piece of pork cooked perfectly. Crispy on the outside and juicy in the middle. The curry sauce had a little kick and perfectly paired with the pork. The rice was nicely cooked and the pickled vegetables were refreshing. The miso soup was rather mundane and didn't really add anything to the meal. With that being said, you don't come to this place for the soup. I will definitely be coming back to try the other items on the menu.

I had really high hopes for Katsu Gin, but ended up leaving incredibly disappointed. Surprised all of these high reviews. We ordered two Curry Katsu (pork and chicken). We added a side of Shrimp and Veggies. We almost added an extra bowl of rice (+$2) for our little one, but the guy, who was really nice, said that he'll make sure our rice was "large". So, let's start with the food. The Katsu was off. The batter was off. It was very greasy and flaked off in weird levels (initially very find and then mealy like). It just didn't work. The pork was dry, but the chicken was tender. It just felt like the quality was lacking. The curry, too salty. Hints of sweetness came from the... teriyaki? that was on top of the curry, but a lack of depth and flavor that was over shadowed by how salty the curry was made it difficult to enjoy. The cabbage was not shredded uniformly and just too thick in certain places. This consistency actually matters, but lacking here. The service was fine when you ask for assistance. During our entire stay, not once were we checked on nor our water refilled. The bathroom also had a mini flood and no one bothered to clean it up. It's really these little things that adds up enough for a place to not get another consideration.

We were in need of some lunch after visiting the library. So I was looking around the area to see if there were any new spots we haven't tried yet and I suggested a couple of spots and my hubby chose Katsu Gin. In short, delicious, plentiful, and heart warming curry and I will be back for another to-go meal. L O C A T I O N Katsu Gin is located off of N Milpitas Blvd and Calaveras Blvd. It's next to Noah's Bagels. The parking situation here is tight. There's not that many spots but luckily we found one directly in front of Noah's Bagels. I N S I D E It's not a huge spot but they do have a number of tables as well as bar seating. M E N U We were here primarily because of the curry, but they do have each protein (Pork loin, pork tenderloin, chicken, fish, shrimp, oyster and veggie) by itself as a set or sides as well as on udon or over rice (as a don). They also have appetizers which we ended up skipping. After looking at photos as I've never heard of hirekatsu (pork tenderloin), we decided to go with the standard pork loin aka tonkatsu curry set. Not thinking too much about it, we also got the fish katsu on the side. The curry set comes with miso soup, rice, and pickled veggies. The fish katsu side was two large fish fillets and a dipping sauce. The tonkatsu was sizeable and juicy. It did have a nice trim of fat though my hubby wasn't feeling it. I like fat folks so for me it was great. I grew up having fried pork chops and the fat was the best part. The curry packed a punch. I still wish it had large chunks of potatoes or carrots but I know this is traditional style. It was very flavorful and everything I want in terms of consistency and flavor. The fish katsu was fine. The dipping sauce was delicious. It was nice and sizeable considering it was a side. We didn't realize it would be when we ordered! So we were quite full from the meal. I typically don't end up having the soup with Japanese meals but I wanted to taste this one. The miso soup was also quite flavorful. It made me want to finish it all. S E R V I C E We called in our order as we were just going to pick it up on the way from the library. They said 20-25 minutes so we ended up going to a donut shop nearby first. We arrived and it was already ready to go. So I would say err on the side of 15-20 minutes when picking up. Easily paid by card. O V E R A L L I would definitely be back if I were having a curry craving. Maybe not another side of protein if we were doing it again. It was definitely enough food for two people. If you're going to eat in person, you should use the QR code to sign up for their waitlist as there were definitely people waiting outside and it was packed inside. I would likely do another to-go which was a great experience.

Service, ambience on point. Friendly, accommodating and helpful. My friend and I got the chicken katsu and shrimp/oyster katsu. Chicken katsu was very crispy, flavorful, not too burnt, and had good portions. I togo'ed a bit home as well. The food quality reminds me of when I was in Japan a few months ago! Have been here multiple times and would go again. Parking location is good. Efficient service if there's a long waitlist and they take your orders in advance.

We finally got the chance to try this restaurant with my husband and his family, and we all really enjoyed our food. They take your order before you're seated, which was a nice touch since it kept the wait time for our meals pretty short. We ordered the katsu curry along with a few donburi dishes that came with rice and egg, and everything was delicious. By the end of the night, we were definitely full and satisfied. There's a good amount of seating inside, and the staff is both friendly and efficient, which made the whole experience even better.

No big deal since I've been to other Japanese curry places like this. I've had a mix bag where the katsu was deliciously crispy and moist on the inside and days where the meat inside is dry, even drenched in curry. Hot curry sauce is Japanese hot, so it has spices in it but not spicy at all. The workers do their best for the lunch rush, so that's a plus at least.
