Came here on a whim for an americano and a croissant BEC + avocado. Both came out hot and prompt. Both tasted better than I could have ever made. Pandemic made me get creative so I was *forced* to dine al Fresca and take in the sight and sound of crashing waves with my meal. Great little breakfast spot by the beach in a small shopping plaza in IB. The vibe was very beachy and casual. Employees were friendly. Price was good and affordable. It's a small place with super casual feel inside with a few seating inside and optional seating outside the back where you can somewhat smell the beach and the sea breeze. After we had our little croissant breakfast sandwiches, wife and I strolled down to the beach - only got to the end of the cement/road area because of my injury and wearing a boot and using crutches. after reading Yelp reviews, just walked in about 1:50pm in to see if they serve lunch. First I looked at the menu screen over the counter and realized that there are only coffee and other beverage but no food. So I did ask to a girl who stood behind the counter " do you have any food ?" Then she whispers to a guy next to her, "what is he saying ? " That I could hear from 5 feet's away. This place is so amazing and the food is excellent, the only thing I saw the past two times was that they would let folks in without masks. It's disappointing that they were letting people in (they weren't eating indoors they were just in line and waiting) without a proper face covering. Hands down the BEST Tuna sandwich I have ever had I was in Imperial Beach for work and had to grab a quick bite to eat. Quick search and I decided Katy's was where my stomach was leading me. I'm so glad I found this hidden gem, I only wish j lived in the neighborhood so I could come here weekly. Katy is the sweetest person, she greets you when you come in and takes your order while she's running around multi tasking. All good things. The decor is spunky and eclectic. I had their Tuna sandwich that came on lightly toasted wheat bread accompanied with avocados and sprouts. All the ingredients work in harmony with the fresh tuna salad with all the right ratios of mayo to tuna and whatever secret Katy puts in it. Washed down with a strong brew of iced coffee, every bite was a delicious harmony of flavors. I was so sad that my sandwich disappeared so quickly. I'm willing to drive all the way down here again. Not only is Katys conveniently located next to me, they also make one of the best acai bowls in SD! The Acai and yogurt combo topped with fresh fruit is probably one of the BEST things in the world. We lived in Imperial Beach for approximately six years, and I don't think there's ever been a time that we've walked into Katie's café where if Katie, the owner is there, she has a smile on her face. It's very discouraging when the owner of the establishment is always grumpy, never smiles, and is barking at her employees. Not sure what's going on there but grace is given for a one time experience, maybe even two, but every single time? I know I'm not the only one who's noticed this, because it's common conversation that she just does not seem generally happy. Come on Katie! This place is absolutely amazing, I walked to the rear of the cafe and there is a outdoor patio just steps from the beach! The interior of the cafe is naturally decorated with rustic modern furniture that you would see at your own house.... They are also decked out with awesome paintings that cover the wall & hand made ornaments hanging from the ceiling. Very nice staff, and everybody I've seen walk in this morning are good vibe people. We stayed in IB for a few days and this was just about the only place to get some quick breakfast. The breakfast sandwiches were good, we tried the Zacs , croissant egg and a few others. All were pretty good. The only thing about some of the egg sandwiches with avocado is that the sandwich gets slippery and messy quick. We also tried their coffee (super strong), espresso, fruit smoothies (decent). Oh the only thing I would say this isn't 5 stars is because their bagels are store bought bagels and I wish they were homemade, it makes all the difference. How can you not love this place!? The menu has everything you could ever want when it comes to eating something healthy and filling. The decorations and all around atmosphere is amazing with so much art, comfortable vintage seating, with an outdoor patio. I absolutely love this little spot. The two girl working the register which I also believe they where the ones who prepare the food did a wonderful job in service and bringing the meals out at a quick and wonderful time. I've been coming to Katy's for a couple of years now and I have never been unsatisfied :) . I stick with what i know and get Al's Cali King breakfast Croissant Sandwich, i throw some Tapatio or chalula hot sauce (they have tapatio packets but chalula is what i have saved in my bag lol!) Fills me up for breakfast or a brunch item. Typically I get one of the frappes they have to offer or the DELICIOUS Green Goddess smoothie! Even with the recent new owners I am still enjoying that Katy's legacy has still stayed within the building. Leaving a review now because i did have a wonderful experience with the banjo cashier lad that had taken my order. Both workers that tended to my friend and I had bubbly quirky personalities and I absolutely adored it. Katy's Cafe is truly part of Imperial Beach's history if thats what you'd call it to give it that much credit!
