The Kauai Sweet Shoppe is located behind the Gaylord restaurant in a cute little house. The inside is very small for the space you think it occupies. Maybe 15 people max before it gets too crowded. They had some odd hours. They were closed on 10/6 without any notice but a sign on the door. We wanted to come back but couldn't reach anyone on the phone on 10/7 to make sure the drive there wasn't wasted. Thankfully the Gaylord residence was able to ask someone working there and they mentioned being open till 3:30, opposite of their voicemail which said 5 pm. Wis their hours were a bit more consistent. The shop has caramel which come in 6 different flavors and we got to sample some. They also have chocolate covered caramel, pretzels, pineapple, apples, and bark. If food isn't your thing, they have apparel like shorts, aprons, towels, mugs, cards, cups, coloring books, and hats. There is a small window you can see where they make the caramel. The macchiato caramel was soft and coffee flavored. The perfect mix of sweet and salty. The Oreo caramel apple was good as well. The caramel was soft and very thin around the apple so it felt more like eating an apple versus something covered in sticky caramel. Make sure to check the bottom of the bag if you plan to share these. Some batches had only a month and nothing past 2 months. Found this place because of the luau next door. Absolutely had to come and get some Li Hing Mui Caramels to give away as gifts. They're just too good! These were the only caramels I liked from them, though. The Sea Salt Caramel is way too sweet and half of one is more than enough for me. Their Guava Caramel had no guava flavor to it. Sadly, I had the hardest time getting the Li Hing Mui Caramels. Learned about them Friday night, they close early on Saturdays, closed on Sundays, and I flew out Monday at noon. Close enough to the airport so I made a stop there first and they were closed! Nothing on their website said they would be closed. They just had a piece of paper taped to the door. Thankfully, my friend was staying an extra few days, so he picked up a few bags for me. I went with my kids to the store after our train ride. As soon as the door opened, the staff said we only had 10 minutes left before they close. I scurried around the store and grabbed all the flavors. I wanted to try as she was ringing me up. I saw that there appears to be an option to try free samples. I already bought about $90 worth of taffy and I asked for four samples. The cashier tells me only one per person. She did see me come in with myself and three girls but my other daughter decided to wait outside because it was a smaller store. She also felt unwelcomed when she said that they were closing in 10 minutes. It was our last day in Kauai and our last stop in our vacation. It was a bummer that we had such bad service. Walked in here to 1) kill some time before my rum tasting, and 2) because the sign said "free samples." Little did I know I ended up buying everything I sampled. This cute little shop is tiny but mighty. When I first walked in, I saw people walking out with bags. I didn't think I was going to buy any since I normally don't like caramel, especially because theyre too sweet and stick to your teeth. At first I was surprised they have out whole peices of caramel for folks to try. I was about to feel guilty trying all the peices without the intent to buy any. Well don't knock them until you try them! I tried their two most popular: Hawaiian Sea Salt, Toasted Coconut. And also the Aloha Ginger. --- bought all three! They weren't overly sweet despite being caramel, and did not stick to my teeth at all! They were soft, chewy, but melted right off my teeth. The salt, the coconut, and the ginger each complemented the caramel to offset the sweetness. I had to refrain from trying more because the fear of buying all the flavors! read more

This is next to Gaylord's Restaurant and it's a quaint candy shop on the plantation property. We were pleasant greeted as we walked in and offered some complimentary caramels. YUM! They have a window in the shop and we got to see caramels being freshly made. My son wanted a plain caramel apple but they were all flavored with some toppings. He opted for the white chocolate fruity pebbles and it didn't disappoint. The apple was fresh and tart and the flavor of the toppings were so good. They all went really well with each other. We also purchased a bag of the salted caramels after trying the sample. Price was a bit steep but happy to support a local business. This was a nice, unexpected treat on our vacation. read more

We were in the area for the Safari and heard from our tour guide about this shoppe and the trouble COVID had been during their first year of operation. We knew we had to stop by and buy some candy because support local! We tried a few different caramel flavors including the earl grey and coconut but settled on the salted caramel for our purchase. This was anything but a tourist trap! The decor and ambiance was spot on. I tried a sample of their sea salted Hawaiian Carmel while we were waiting and WOW! It was so good- I even took another! The woman working at the store was very sweet with my boys. They each got a scoop of ice cream (black cherry - out of this world and coconut- also very good) and went crazy over it. Since ice cream shops are one type of restaurant where one can say, "This place is good," without adding, "for Kauai", we eat a lot of ice cream when we're on the island. This place is good, but I'm not sure it's a good fit for its location. It's on the Kilohana Plantation, where one of the big attractions is a tour railroad. That means that shops get floods of tourists each time the rail tour ends (which is how we ended up there), and probably long stretches when customers are scarce. When business shows up in bursts like that, it's a good idea to have some kind of crowd control. It would have been nice to have a menu that's clearly readable while standing in line, so that people don't reach the front of the line and puzzle over what to request. It might help to arrange the shop so that people can line up for goodies outside, so that people shopping from the shelves aren't bumping into people in line for ice cream and other counter service treats. We liked the iron tables and chairs under the breezeway. They were noisy to move, but picturesque and surprisingly comfortable. Crowd control issues aside, the ice cream was good. I'm not sure it matched Lappert's or Tropical Dreams, but it's better than most mainland ice cream, and after the train tour, who wants to drive a long way for dessert? I see that a lot of other reviews praise the confections, rather than the ice cream. Maybe I'd give a higher rating if I had eaten some of those, but we were in a mood for ice cream. Note that my three star review is not meant to be bad. It's "A-OK." And after the train tour, A-OK ice cream is definitely a welcome treat. read more

We just love this tiny little gem of a sweet shop in Kaua'i. The coffee cake was perfect! Mahalo noi loa to Chole and Kalei who are just as sweet as the items they sell. From perfect coffees, ice creams, out of this world hand made chocolates and pastries to die for. We visited the shop last year where we bought some of their signature home grown Kaua'i vanilla beans for making our own vanilla extract back home. It turned out so well we couldn't wait to get more on this trip. I had a marvelous lunch today at Gaylord's, then after browsing all the cute shops with friendly staff, I wanted a cup of coffee and a little treat from the "Sweet Shop". WOW, what a way to ruin my experience! The coffee was fine, but the "Decadent Fudge Brownie" was so dry, I could only eat one bite! It was like dry cocoa powder in my mouth. NOT like fudge by any stretch of the imagination. I don't usually write reviews, but this time I felt I had to. I went in to tell the NICE girl who SERVED me, that they were not very good and maybe she should try them. I offered mine to her. There was another young woman there, moving stock and samples in and out of the shop, and she cut me off, mid sentence, and hardly let me say what I wanted to say. She just kept repeating that they have NEVER had a problem with their brownies. I said that might be true, but I'm here telling you to try it for yourself. She rudely said "we don't give refunds" - which I never mentioned and would never have asked for. This woman is a complete disgrace to the business, and I will never return! She really needs to take some lessons in customer service. If she's the owner, she deserves to go out of business, and if I ran Gaylord's, I would kick her out. Don't waste your time here. read more
