Do not ignore the reviews here. I didn't but I already had a Groupon voucher and didn't want 85$ wasted. I arrived 15 minutes before appointment at 3 pm. I walk in to a huge salon with 2 people. One at the reception and one stylist washing someone's hair. I informed them I had a Groupon coupon for full highlights and blow dry. Given the previous reviews I wanted to make sure I wasn't over charged. At 3 pm I said I would have to wait for a few minutes as the hair colorist was "finishing up" with another client. I trusted them thinking the wash up was towards the end of the ongoing service. At 3.15 the hair colorist comes and starts Consulting giving me a color swatch to select my highlights from. Again the colorist tells me she will attend to me in a few minutes after she finishes up with the client she was attending to. Then I realize it's 3.30 pm and I start getting impatient. Nobody comes to explain when I will be attended to. The hair colorist comes up again... voila and plops another swatch book to select from and talks about having to use gloss (extra 45$). I don't budge and tel her I'll see how the color turns out and then maybe get on the gloss. She leaves to attend to the same customer whose life story I heard and who went about blessing those sole to employees as if she were in church! Then the receptionist walks past me and I ask her how much longer..?? (It's 3.45 pm) she said the current customer added a service! She had the audacity to let the customer add a service while a customer with a valid appointment had walked in!! Made me wait for 45 minutes, never gave me an accurate expected wait time and top it with zilch apologies!! I figured the "hogged my time slot customer" was 350$ kaching to the salon. What's an 85$ groupon customer for that...?? I picked my own color, no consultation on what color I should try or stay away from and the highlighting is really average. There are chunks of color near the crown of my head that made my friends ask if it was an at home job..Not to mention the only stylist managed to attend to one more person while she had my head on the hair wash basin wet and all I could do for 20 minutes was stare at walls. For consolation I could do it two ways... diagonal at 45 degrees angle or crane my neck towards the ceiling for a full 90! I got done at 6 pm. At 3 hours for hair 3 inches above shoulders this was the longest I've come across for hair coloring. Please also note they are shut Sunday to Tuesday. Apparently they are understaffed with a huge salon in a pretty prime business area. My assumption is this is a front for something shady and the stylists are on contract to legit the operations. One bad review could be an outlier... don't fool yourself by not trusting all the lone stars here. Even if it's a Groupon deal, take one from another salon. read more

My stylist, Yexael, rushed me though explaining the color process while making a few "suggestions" on what to get done. I said, yes, sure, that sounds great, let's do this & that to my highlights. Well, turns out those "suggestions" are actually extra salon services that I was almost charged for when I was done with my appointment. I had to explain to the receptionist that I will not be paying for anything because I bought a Groupon, since no one mentioned to me that there would be other costly services that were provided. Otherwise I would not agree to them. Super sketchy!!! Now on to actual highlights -- the stylist told me he knew exactly what he was doing and he would get my partial highlights exactly right based on the photo I brought in. After he was finished, from the front the highlight look ok, but once you lift the hair, you can see white uneven streaks, like barcodes in my hair. Super disappointing! I called the salon to get it fixed, darkened slightly, since I was not happy with such a stark contrast (the photo I provided did NOT have that). Found this salon through a Groupon deal for a full highlight. For an Aveda salon I was hoping for decent results, but left the salon devastated. Nonetheless, am never coming to this salon again. Sorry, but I don't think groupon customers should be getting a lesser quality service, this seems apparent from other reviews on Yelp. I specifically took a day off from work for this service as they were all booked for services after work. I arrived on a weekday to an empty salon, thinking the stylist would take extra care and would not be in a rush. I had a consult with my stylist Cesarina, on the color I wanted to achieve. My hair was already very light through previously services, and wanted an ash grey/blonde and provided photos of the color as well. She explained in order to reach that color I would need to pay an additional $60 for a toner (ridiculous since this should be included. How else do u do highlights?!) regardless I agreed as long the color came out well. This was the beginning of my problems. She didn't seem to understand what "cool tones" we're and kept showing me color swatches. She didn't close any of her foils, so the bleach/developer was leaking out the foils leaving bleach spots. Sloppy job. Salon did not have heat lamps to process, the assistant blew dry the foils less than 5mins and walked away. Toner applied to my hair burned my neck and scalp, this has never happened to me before, in the 10yrs I have been professionally coloring my hair. She assured me this was "normal" After blow drying my hair, I was clearly unhappy with the results as the color was nothing like the picture provided, the stylist must've known as well since she was not surprised when I pointed out the color came out terrible. She then asked the assistant to push products to sell to me, when I'm sure the assistant realized I was already very unhappy. I explained to Cesarina the color was not what I wanted, even though I paid extra for the toner. Her response was to wash my hair as the color would fade. i wasn't accepting of her response, but she kept insisting it would help with the discoloration. I was skeptical but felt defeated and left unhappy. In daylight, my hair was a dirty orange/green/blue. It was an embarrassment as a working professional to show up to work with such terrible results. I immediately called the salon the following day with my concerns. Management was not very understanding and put the full blame on me as the customer. the manager also advised the stylist knew there was a chance I would come back for a color correction, this is not right. If a stylist is already aware the results were bad and I explained my disappointment the same day, I'm still not understanding how this was MY fault or why this wasn't corrected the same day as well. Don't waste your time and money. Bought a groupon for full highlights thinking if the service is good then by all means I would love to go back. When I came in the receptionist looked like she's not in the mood for any conversations. Ok that's fine as long as my hair come out good. My hair was done by Yexel (excuse if I misspell) who has been doing hair for over 10 years. He explained to me in a looong way how he's going to do my hair, I get it he wants to know how my hair was done before. Mind you I never had such a long conversation with a stylist and he still didn't do my hair correctly. He did my highlights plus charged me extra $45 for the gloss (not included in the package). For everything I spent $200. Horrible, waste of time and money, I could go on but you can see picture attached which was taken one week after. For the color itself I'm OK with it, I asked for ash blond but the roots are unacceptable. I also pointed the roots out to him that they are still visible but he basically brushed me off saying basically he cannot do anything about it and I would have to get a root touch up or something for additional cost. I have never left a salon looking like this. I'm very disappointed especially when my friend told me after the salon that I should get my roots done ..... First impression: I call to schedule an appointment after getting my Groupon, and no one answers the phone. You can't leave a message either, their voicemail just says to schedule an appointment on their website (great customer service move, this). The latest appointments available on their website are at 4pm - I had to request 2 hours off work for mine. When I was already at the place, it turned out that they are actually open much later than that and can schedule appointments at 6pm and after 6, but since I couldn't reach them by phone in the first place, that wasn't exactly helpful anymore. My Groupon was for a single process, and the guy who did my hair said it was only for the roots. He then looked at my hair and said the amount of gray I had was greater than what the Groupon covers, and it will cost me $30 extra. I saw no point in arguing - however, the other $50 single process Groupons I got in the past were for the whole head! I thought it was ridiculously expensive to pay eighty bucks just for the roots. During styling I asked that in addition to the blowout my hair be curled. The extra charge for that was surprisingly low, but then I suppose you get what you pay for - my curls unraveled before I even got home. I couldn't believe what a shoddy job they did with the curling. Imagine if I actually had some event to go to after this?? (btw, I have naturally curly hair, so my hair can certainly hold a curl) Should I even mention that now, only two weeks later my temples are already half-gray? And that's considering that the guy kept telling me that the hair dye they use does not wash out, it will stay in place until the gray grows out. Well, there is no way I've had that much growth in only two weeks. Once again, eighty bucks! I spent eighty bucks on this! I would not consider this a positive experience, and cannot recommend this place to others. read more

Very bad customer service experience. Haircuts are a nuisance IMHO, so I want it to be quick, easy and good value. First, they wouldn't honor my Groupon saying that they never allow any customer to use a Groupon twice even though the paper says you can use it once every 6 months (I came over a year ago). In the end, they let me pay the face value of the Groupon, but wouldn't honor the additional discount - meaning I paid an extra $11 than what I paid on Groupon. It also says a haircut is only $70 on the board, but Groupon says $110 value? Shrug, not about the money but the experience. Next, the person that was supposed to blow dry my hair seemed like she was going to take forever finishing the prior customer (she was only half done), so I just left without a blow dry. Also, they have a bunch of administrative staff (4 when there was only 1 hairdresser), but most of them don't really seem to do work or know what they're doing. One worker couldn't figure out how to check this guy out, so I eventually just handed exact change to another worker that was standing around. The haircut itself is good - gets the job done. I had a good experience here last year when I purchased a brazilian and a facial groupon deal and was excited to try them out again this year. Sadly, my last two visits were beyond disappointing and it's safe to say that I will never be coming back here again. The first time the receptionist refused to honor my groupon even though the fine print clearly states you can't use another groupon within a 6 month time frame. I came back after after almost 10 months but she informed me that it was a "management policy" and that I should call back groupon and get a refund. Luckily, she still honored the discounted price so I didn't make a big stink about it. It was still mildy annoying and not quite the seamless experience I was hoping for. I still had to deal with the inconvenience of calling groupon's customer service and getting my money back when really it was their responsibility for not clearly stating the details of the fine print! The 2nd visit was for a haircut/blowout and the receptionist pulled the same crap AGAIN! I was once again abiding by the rules on the fine print but they had some ridiculous reason for not honoring the groupon. I voiced my frustration and finally got to use it but at what cost? It was SO not worth it! This business really needs to get it's shit together and stop using Groupon as a ploy to trap customers only to then offer an awful experience. Kaya, please COMMUNICATE with Groupon and clearly define your restrictions before having tons of customers buy a deal only to then realize they can't use it. I've been back maybe 5 times since the first visit, and I'll continue to go but only because I can't find him elsewhere (and he really gets my hair!) The decor and everything else are pretty basic and I haven't tried services from any of the other professionals there. The bad - I was booked for a haircut yesterday at 2:30 (12/9/17 - a snow day and also dreaded Santa Con, but I didn't realize when I booked). I schlep through wet snow and vomiting undergrads to find the salon closed, gate down, lights off. Are you serious? I received an email confirming the appointment the day before. No one called, emailed, or attempted to contact me to cancel and I spent almost 2 hours commuting round trip. Such a waste of my time! Seriously ridiculous customer service. Based on the reviews here they are not going to do anything to redress this, but I will update if they do. He explained all my options and asked all the right questions to give me the look I want, without pushing to upsell. Finally!! Found an all around salon for color, blow dry and wax in my neighborhood! In my previous post I reviewed I just did a blow dry service. Here's my update with getting my highlights done: Let me start by saying that I am extremely picky when it comes to good highlights for blondes. Being in nyc for two years I have yet to find a good colorist until today. Patrick, did a full head of highlights for me and blow dry. They came out looking amazing! I feel like a Barbie doll :) best part was he did it under two hours. Typically when I do my color I'm sitting in the chair for three hours which gets me anxious. Not with Patrick. He was great and the results were amazing. I also tried an eyebrow wax with Kat who was equally amazing! She listened to what I wanted and gave me exactly that. The staff are all professional and the owners are extremely nice. If you live in the area or need a good salon come here! There are so many salons in NY and all are way overpriced or suck. I purchased a groupon for women's haircut and luckily got an appointment last minute. The place was not too big or fancy, they didn't even use sanitized hair brushes. My stylist Cesarina did a terrible job on my cut she did not even give me any consultation on what I should do or not. I had to decide what cut I want by googling images from my phone and then tell her the one I liked. There was too much of communication problem. She made my hair look fine when I left the salon, but after two days when I gave it a wash my hair looked disgusting, it really has no shape or style. I would not recommend it to anyone. I came across this place while looking for something near my work because I desperately needed a cut before my client meeting. Normally I go to a place near me on Upper East Side. Kaya had great reviews and was also recommended by a female colleague who is a regular there. Am I glad I stopped by for a cut, these guys specialize in precision cutting so it's awesome for someone like me who always gets classy business cut with scissors only. Fatih did excellent job! Guy knows his stuff so got some good education from him on what makes a great cut, also had some interesting conversations about world politics. The place is pretty cool, it's an art gallery too! Actually very upscale and classy, much better atmosphere than most of the place even on east side of town that charge twice as much. Will definitely recommend this to anyone who wants to get a high end service in an upscale place without spending the top dinero! Only complaint is couldn't quickly get through on phone... but no surprise, they were getting calls constantly during the time I was there. I really wasn't happy with my visit to Kaya. I wanted to come in at 4:30 for a blowout and they instead asked if I could come in at 4:15. Sure, no problem. I get there at 4:15 and they made me wait until 4:45 to be seen. I'm assuming they overbooked themselves, but come on, don't turn down a customer's requested time if you're not even going to be available at that time! As I was waiting, the hairstylist was parading around like a skeezy car salesman-- complimenting girls on their eyes/hair/etc. all while ushering them to the front desk to sign up for another appointment. I commend the man on his persistence, but please, when customers are telling you "I don't know my availability yet" don't harass them to "sign up for a time anyway." I wouldn't be surprised if they were running behind schedule solely because this hairstylist would NOT leave the customers alone if they didn't sign up for another appointment! Also, because they were behind schedule, I was given the world's FASTEST shampoo/condition. As a result, they didn't even wash the shampoo/conditioner out! I had it in both ears, underneath the back of my hair, VISIBLY along my hairline, AND I wasn't given a towel, so on the walk back to my seat, I was DRENCHED. Further, the blowout I received was TERRIBLE-- my hair looked like a frizzy mess. The hairstylist proceeded (to no surprise) to then compliment me on my eyes/hair, which then led (to no surprise) him following me to the front desk and insisting that I sign up for a Keratin process. Got a same day appointment for a blow out on a Thursday evening. Samantha did an amazing job. I've been to several blow dry bars and salons and this was by far the best results I've experienced. Samantha listened to what I wanted and did exactly exactly what I asked for. My hair has just enough body and is super shiny and soft. Quick too. I have medium to long straight hair and my blow dry was done in just over half hour. Place is very clean and accommodating. I really can't say enough good things. I called around to the usual suspects which were booked solid and my boss' usual NYC blowout spot was closed on Sunday -- the only time we had free. From the initial phone call to the finished blowout, the experience here was A+! I am Mexican with thick, wavy hair and my boss is Iranian with very thick wavy hair. The stylist (Serafina? She is Dominican and name starts with S!) handled our hair with zero problem and wielded that blowdryer/round brush combo like a champ. Yes, she got all the baby hairs and gave me crazy smooth hair with no serum or flat iron required. YAAASSS! This is our new NYC spot for blowouts every time we're in town. Loved it here! Relatively new and the space is clean and beautiful and full of art (one of the owners told me they are rotating artists in the "gallery" space -- how cool and innovative of them!) Stopped in here for a quick underarm wax ($13) and so glad I did! Everything seems to be done right here--it's clean, staff is friendly and service was spot on. Some deets: Granted this place just opened, but it is absolutely pristine. I'm a sucker for a nice ambience, so I was pretty impressed--nay, enamored with the artwork, french moldings and bright lighting in the foyer. They had some great artwork up from local artists. Had I needed to wait at all (I didn't), I wouldn't have minded perusing the walls for a bit. The waxing rooms are all very clean and nicely furnished. My waxing experience equally, if not more impressive. I had Natasha, who was super sweet, very attentive and was fun to chat with. As someone who's very particular about my hair, I was nervous to get my first hair cut in New York City. I booked an appointment with Cesarina at Kaya Aveda, though, and she made me feel completely comfortable. Cesarina gave me the long layers I was looking for and the best blowout I've ever had. The salon is nicely furnished and all of the staff members were friendly. Definitely a gem. Their neighborhood discount made my cut extremely affordable - I paid $55 including tip. I originally came here for my first appointment back in October with a groupon. After reading reviews I requested an appointment with Justin, which I was happy I did. Justin was accommodating to my needs and did great job. I came back for a second appointment in December wanting a drastic change. Justin encouraged me to go drastic and took his time styling it to make me comfortable. My appointment took about 1 and a half hours for the cut. Justin never rushed through anything. I've had my brows done here a few times and loved it. The receptionist is always so lovely too. The ladies were super nice, quick, and don't go crazy. I have very thick eyebrows and they know how to thread them. I've been cutting my hair myself for seven years and wanted to finally let someone else doing it, so I came here. Nobody told me why the guy cutting my hair was but he did a pretty ok job. It's not terribly even, but I left feeling confident and like how I look. I suppose that's the whole point. He did a great shampoo but seemed to just pat the conditioner on quickly before rinsing. He didn't offer to put in any product or try to sell me on anything afterwards. No heat protector or anything before the blow dry. The guy who did the blow-dry, Luca: not a fan. He said 1 word to me the entire time. When he came over he just grabbed the blow dryer, and sort of yanked my hair. Didn't seem too concerned with my experience or being professional. I sensed he just wanted to get it over with, disliked me, hated life, or all of the above. It was $70 all told. I probably won't go back for hair, but it's still my go to brow threading place. read more
