My friends said the beyond katsu was better than the chicken katsu which I was surprised. So if your vegetarian this may be a good option. The broth from the soup was delish! Not too overwhelming but also not too heavy in flavor. As for the sandwhich, I thought it was a great choice in case your not overly hungry and just want a quick bite the sauce that was paired was also quite good. When I had moved, it was very difficult to find something par or better than Wako. We ordered 1 appetizer (potato shrimp...yum, the sauce!!) and 5 dishes (4 different katsus and ddukbokee) and every one of them was a winner! I loved the little nuisance of the chef's touches to the food...you can tell there was thought and care that went inti each sauce, food, entree, etc. Snow Katsu is a must! So refreshing! This is literally the best Katsu I have ever had in my entire life. The pork is juicy and the breading is very crisp. It's all delicious and melts in your mouth. Also you must try the Cheese Katsu! Hands down the best Katsu in the DMV area. Most Katsu made in America is pretty dry & a little tough to eat but not here. The quality of the food here was through the roof. Their portions are a little small for the price but we really couldn't be mad about it because of how good everything was. We tried their crabmeat croquette (9/10), rosu katsu (12/10 actually amazing wow) and their chashu sandwich (10/10). They actually gave us the croquette on the house for us to try which was super nice of them considering we popped in pretty late too. It seems like they haven't had their grand opening just yet so a couple of menu items we wanted to try weren't available (looking at you katsu sando) but I'll def be back to try the other items once they're fully up and running! read more

The restaurant was moderately busy, and the service was great. Our waiter was very attentive, refilling our waters several times during our visit without being prompted. Our food came out promptly, and was piping hot. The menu had a lot of options, and we definitely had a hard time choosing but ended up getting Chicken Karaage for an appetizer, and Cheese Katsu and Chili Teppan Cheese Katsu for our main entrees. I will preface the rest of the review by saying my boyfriend and I definitely had very different opinions on the food. He really didn't like the Katsu or Karaage due to there being too many tendons in the chicken, making some pieces not easy to chew. Plus, despite having a medium-high price, food plating was terrible. This did not bother me as much, but I would have preferred the tendons being cut out. The chicken karaage was alright, but definitely not something we would order again. The cheese Katsu was crispy on the outside, and very cheesy on the inside. For us, we probably would have preferred a little less cheese in the center, but that is probably personal preference. Again, we do have to mention that the chicken had quite a few pieces of tendons making it a little hard to chew. Would have been nice to have these trimmed out. Lastly, the Chili Teppan Cheese Katsu. This was definitely the winner of the night for me. However my boyfriend did not quite like it for the same reasons above, too many tendons. I thought this dish was really delicious! It had onions, peppers, a spicy chili sauce and was covered with cheese and bonito flakes on top. This dish was spicy and amazing to me! My only complaint about this dish was that it did not come with rice, which seemed odd. So thankfully I tried their food during the soft-opening, which means they have time to improve and land into their final form. I hope they take this criticism constructively so they succeed! The business has LOTS of potential, but that depends on how they move forward. I hope to make this a 5 star rating in the future. Croquettes: Mixed Review Taste: 8/10 - It was just simple & good. Nothing too fancy but straightforward. Nice flavor in the filling and great crunch to the fried outer layer. Presentation: 6/10 Nicely fried and very tasty. But i'm gonna say it like it is, the clear sauce they drizzle on just needs to be replaced or mixed in with their brown sauce. We couldn't get over how much it resembles semen. There; I said it. I've never seen ANY food in my life presented with a clear goopy sauce. It's just hard to look at and take seriously. Rosu Tonkatsu: Mixed Review Taste: 9.5/10 What I appreciated about their tonkatsu style is that it represented the traditional Japanese style I had in Tokyo. Thick, tender, juicy with a nice flaky crust. Whoever the chef is knows what they're doing with fried foods. This is in opposition to the Korean style where they beat the living shit out of the meat completely flat and fry it like KFC. Sauce: 6/10 I was genuinely confused why they basically gave me A1 sauce. I grew up on A1, and the flavor is very distinct. But whatever the case, they seem to have made some in-house concoction that represented basically watered down A1. Tasted nothing like the traditional tonkatsu sauce we are familiar with. Definitely was a curve ball and not unique enough to stand on its own because.... it's basically A1. It made me feel like I was eating Tonkatsu at home and ran out of sauce so I supplemented with A1. ‍ Price/Portion: 4/10 So this is the part I have to be brutally honest about. They are WAY overpriced. Its $1 less than LAB No. 1's Tonkatsu but literally half the portion. As much as I really appreciate the traditional style, these prices may kill the business as it will not bring many repeat customers. It's not worth $16.99 for a piece of fried chicken and a scoop of rice. They need to at least drop their prices by $2-$3 if they want consistent repeat customers. Again, I want this place to succeed so I say this to potentially help. Wako in Los Angeles is $12-$14, absolutely filling and delicious. There's no justification for a $16.99 tonkatsu - and that's their most basic one. It goes all the way up to $22 for their speciality one. This will absolutely hurt them if they don't adjust. Again, the tonkatsu is absolutely tasty! - but not worth the price regarding portions and uniqueness. I understand margins are low for F&B, but again, it's better to have customers coming back then making it a one time experience. Appetizer Salad: 1/10 This is an easy fix so I'll just say it. The salad needs to be completely revamped. They basically put on so much dressing gooped onto my salad, I couldn't actually SEE My salad. And the dressing? some weird korean concoction that resembled thousand island dressing. Please stick with the traditional route and go with the Japanese Ginger dressing that NEVER fails. I wish I took a photo so you could see the dish. There was literally enough dressing for 4-5 salads. Drenched is an understatement. And, the dressing was generic, overtly thick and inedible. I didn't touch the dish. Again, this is an easy fix so I hope they pivot appropriately. read more

Udon was standard but again just really solid. I personally prefer the Korean traditional katsu where the pork is pounded thin and flat like schnitzel, but aside from maybe adding it as a future potential option I have no further suggestions. My wife and I truly love this place. Their donkatsu quality is unrivaled in the area. They never use frozen meat, and their service is top notched. And as other reviewers pointed out, the meat of the cutlets are outstanding. They're juicy, so tender, never dry, appropriately in thickness, with a healthy and freshly fried balanced battered panko breading. We can't say enough good things about this place. Granted, we were put off by the prices at first, but the quality of the food, close attention to their customers and overall friendly vibe and service outweighs every negativity they may have (if they have any).
