I have had the most pleasant experience in the world with Kei Sushi. I feel as if though I love everything about Sylvia's sushi shop. From the lighting, the atmosphere, the vibe, the service, and the overall environment, I feel completely and 100% "at home" whenever I arrive to get by for lunch or dinner from here. Firstly, Sylvia (the owner) is the type of person who cares 100% about what the customers feel/how their experience is. For example, I had a very particular order that needed to be made in a very specific way. Even though the order came out wrong, Sylvia took the time to talk to her chefs and get the order 100% correct. She really cares about her customers, and she wants to make sure that she's always providing not only the highest quality food available, but also the highest quality customer experience. Moving from Los Angeles, I know all about sushi shops and how they can be very cold and impersonal. Since I recently moved to Carson City, I was expecting the same type of treatment that I would get Los Angeles. With Kei Sushi, "cold and impersonal" is the farthest thing that you will get with your experience here. All of the servers are extremely warm and friendly. They make sure that they take the time out to get your order correct, they get to know you, and whenever you come back (if you choose to be a regular), then you really start to become friends with the staff and everybody who works there. Being gluten free, when I go for sushi, I am happy to just get the gluten free soy sauce. These folks have all sorts of alternative choices including gluten free tempura. The sake choices are endless. An unassuming strip mall contains this gem. My new favorite. read more

Went for dinner with the family. Generally this place is wonderful and offered great service but we had only gone on the weekend. From the experience today, my conclusion is this: they are not ready for a 5+ person party on a weekday. Kei Sushi was recommended by friends so I stopped by to take home a few rolls. The place had a wait for tables at 5:00 but since my order was to go I sat at the sushi bar and enjoyed a glass of Pinot noir while waiting for my order. I ordered the alligator and the iris rolls. We've been visiting Kei since it opened and have only had one "mediocre" experience. Every other time has been wonderful. The staff is super friendly, the prices are ok and the food is PHENOMENAL! The Red Dragon (you can ask for a spicy version too) is hands down my favorite roll. read more

This sushi restaurant is so good we ate here twice in one weekend. The all you can eat menu option is an incredible value. The fish was high quality and fresh. The miso soup was incredible. The albacore nigiri was my favorite. My husband ate more baked mussels than I've ever seen him eat during our visits. The dragon ball appetizer was amaze-balls! We ate a few orders! This restaurant opened recently. Aside from the unavailability of a wine list, although they do have wine and sake, it was a terrific experience. The decor is delightful. The sushi counter was packed, with a line of people waiting when we left. We chose to sit at a table. I have eaten and enjoyed sushi in many cosmopolitan places, and the sushi I had tonight ranked right up there with the best! We chose the Japanese egg rolls as an appetizer. What a delight! Not like your typical greasy crunchy Chinese egg rolls at all. Mom had their fish tacos (she's not a big sushi fan) and she chose the ahi tuna for the fish. Having lived in Japan for three years I can honestly say that this is a very good little sushi place. Aside from a couple very creative chefs behind the bar this small restaurant has something none of the other sushi bars have in this area; an attentive (non-pushy) staff. We love the Sushi here, and the atmosphere is classy. The restaurant itself is small and conversations carry all over. We give Kei's 4 stars for their sushi BUT only 2 for what they call "Entrees" - it's not that they aren't tasty, rather that they aren't size appropriate. The Susu-Meshi and Hawaiian Bowls served for dinner are very small (Child size) and should have somekind of greens/salad with it, while the Tempura plate is big enough for three people and the rice serving (for one person) is tiny (Toddler size). We will go back for Sushi but never again with guests that aren't fans of Sushi. read more

I have to check my biases. I am spoiled by the excellent sushi in San Francisco and the East Bay, but now that I'm located in the Carson Valley, I have to approach the available japanese wares a little differently. It was totally fine. We ordered a selection of nigiri to test the waters and finished with a tempura vegetable roll and a blossom roll. The fish was fresher than I expected given its geographic limitations. I'm usually not one for fried rolls or anything with cream cheese in it, as it feels somehow wrong, but both maki were delicious and up to par. All in all, good job Kei, I would come back. read more

I am not a big fan of sushi but after getting a sample at The Taste Of Downtown I wanted to give it a try and some friends and I stopped in for lunch a few Saturday's back. I am now a big fan. All my friends loved the sushi and I loved the Fish Tacos. The presentation very amazing. It's located in a strip mall so I wasn't expecting much but once inside I was surprised at the modern decor and the wall treatments. All of which gave the place a very upscale feel and not at all Carson City. The cost of sushi was a bit higher than other places in town but well worth it I'm told. The Fish Tacos were only $10.00. This is my goto sushi spot. The sushi chefs are on point. They make beautiful and delicious rolls. I recommend the kei tuna nigiri. Its the best... I really like the red dragon roll and the macho macho roll. I try not to go at peek hours because it gets packed and service is a lil bit slower. But overall a great place for sushi. read more
