So Kelly's Roast Beef is an institution on Revere Beach which has expanded into a half dozen or so additional locations which we've all been told don't compare to that flagship location in Revere. People who grew up going to this place continue to return for obvious nostalgic reasons, etc etc etc. I'm not sure what the lobster roll used to rate, but the current one is slightly below average. Lobster meat seems to be pretty mangled up/shredded but dressed with a good amount of celery and tangy mayo. What saves it from a complete failure is the heavily buttered roll. The mixture of dressing, lobster and buttered up roll (we're probably talking PHASE liquid butter alternative here) kind of goes well together despise the sub-par lobster quality. Roast beef rolls are also heavily buttered and whats inside is serviceable but nothing special. The price for a single lobster roll is probably too high for me but the surf and turf (Half lobster roll, roast beef sammich, french fries) for about 13 bucks is a really good deal here. No indoor seating but we get an extra star for atmosphere : people watching on Revere Beach is a truly unmatched dining experience in the Boston area. You're also just enough outside of Boston Harbor here to get a pretty good view of the ocean. For city dwellers making a day trip, I can't recommend the blue line enough as driving route 1A is hell on earth. It's a good 20 or so minute walk from the Wonderland T stop but once you're here you cant skimp on the people watching right? read more

How can you not love this place? I was there this past sunday for the hundredth time, I had a fish plate and a small order of shrimp yeah it was like 25 bucks but it was so good. The small order of shrimp fed two people. Some of the best things about this place are the tartar sauce and the honey mustard. It's so GOOD! I will never find such delicious condiments ever because they frigging make it themselves but seriously they should sell that stuff. One other thing, the frappe is awesome! and the turkey club on toasted wheat bread yum! but you have to ask for it that way because they serve it in a wrap i think. read more

The roast beef sandwich is good. The fries and the onion rings have absolutely no flavor, even if you add salt and ketchup. The combo was $11.72, I recommend just getting the sandwich which will save you a couple of bucks and some disappointment. I love what even the SUGGESTION of Kelly's does to my mother. I've actually wondered (I get really bored sometimes) if given the option to save my sister and I, or a Kelly's roast beef sandwich, from a sinking ship, which my mother would choose. Actually, if I asked her that question right now, I bet she'd have to thoughtfully pause... But who can really blame her? I mean, warm roast beef, topped with horseradish and BBQ sauce, squished between two pieces of toasted buttered bun.... Shakespeare has written of love like this. Mind you, these sandwiches are huge, and their other offerings are just as delectable (great onion rings, and fried clams, and a surprisingly good lobster roll), so it's best to get together a small contingent that is a-ok with sharing. Late spring and early autumn are the best times to go, as you can find an empty picnic table (Ok, a bench and your lap) right across the street, and gaze at the glory (he) that is Revere beach while you eat. Oh, man, these guys were a solid '5' back 10 years ago when I last lived in Revere. I've recently gone back, and this is what I have to say... Ok, the large beef with sauce and cheese is still good, but just not the same. It used to come in foil that would keep it steamy hot for quite some time, especially on those wonderfully pleasant 33 degree and rainy winter days along the beach. Now they are in these clunky plastic clamshells - if you don't eat it quick, you get a cold beef and cheese. Not cool. Well, ok, I guess cool, but not in a good way. They have a whole new big menu with lots of pretty pictures, and an 'indoor' ordering area. I'm all for progress and improvement, but when you've got something that's obviously working and has been for years, why fix it? I dunno, am I being snotty saying that I miss the old crappy menu, cold exposed ordering window, and gritty feel? The prices have gone up a lot since 2001, but I guess that happens. I just don't see any added value. It used to be worth an extra drive from Boston, but now I don't think I'd bother unless I lived right nearby, and even then I'd go a lot less because of the high costs. Was craving a lobsta roll and Kelly's does it right. We ordered a few rolls and a clam plate, the lobsta rolls were delish as usual. Unfortunately, the fried clam plate was a huge disappointment. However, the seagulls did not complain (we fed most of it to the birds) as they just were not edible. In a word...disgusting...Spent over $50 last night on way home from airport. I've NEVER sent food back in a restaurant, etc., but this RB was so gristly and fatty, it was inedible. Wouldn't even feed it to my dog. Kids chicken fingers and cheese fries were fine. Called to let them know and get a partial refund to which Manager on duty said he did not have authority. Every winter I long for first glimpse of spring so that I might eat my delicious clam platter on the beach. But until those warm days, I drive out to Revere and get a warm roast beef sandwich with those buttery, buttery buns to keep me toasty. This is such a staple here, and you'll see why as soon as you try it. The service has gone downhill over the years while the prices have gone up, but the second I take my first bite I quickly forget these things. And for all you gents out there, this makes a great first date (or hundredth date or zillionth date). While Kelly's is a bit overrated, Revere beach is needlessly dissed all the time (making it underrated) so it's a wash. I doubt I would really want to go to any other Kelly's location. Flew in from Atlanta on business. Heard it was a local favorite. First, it's a walk-up type joint and isn't a sit down restaurant unless of course it's summer and you can sit out site. Had the Surf & Turf. Lobster Roll was excellent! Roast Beef was OK. I wasn't just blown out of my seat with the Roast Beef taste. I do also understand that this beef is like an aged steak...it's more authentic without the hopped up additives. All in all, speaking with several people in line, everyone agreed they are better at seafood than Roast Beef. I would go back for sure. read more

Something was up with my roast beef sandwich. And I don't know what it was but given my love of all things meat (especially red meat), I was surprised I didn't inhale this sandwich. In fact, I ate half. Their small is serious bizness though. The sandwich was good, but I didn't get it three way...and I thought it was on the dry side. Because I'm conservative like that. I have been a regular of "Kelly's on the Wall" since I was a kid, and I never get tired of their seafood selections, and OMG, their tartar sauce is the stuff of legends. Now, while I still love going there, I am not able to do so as much as I would love to because the prices are just too high for me. I mean, c'mon, $21.00 for a friend clam plate was a bit steep last year...but now it has gone up another $5 this year, and that is just wrong! to spend $60+ for two people to snack on the beach with the seagulls bothering you [Be warned: Those seagulls have become a lot more aggressive in the last few years as well] is a bit steep when I can go to most fancier restaurants and eat a meal with sides and an appetizer for about the same price. On a side note, they really skimp on the onion rings, which was also one of my mainstays, and I am not a fan of the styrofoam containers as I used to love the plates covered in foil. I usually reserve trips to Kelly's for the summer when I want to walk on the beach and then treat myself to a nice Roast Beef sandwich with Cheese and Mayo...yum. Needless to say, since this place is takeout only, you need to be willing to find a place to sit and eat which isn't hard since it's right across from the beach. On certain days, the people watching almost outweighs the great food. I always ask specifically for thin-sliced RARE roast beef and that ensures I get it just the way I like it and seems like they have no problem with that. When I'm in the mood, I'll sometimes order the cheese fries to go along with my red meat. I'm going to have to disagree with Linda S on the grease factor... I was actually surprised that the fried fish platter was not nearly as greasy as I anticipated. It was, in fact, an enormous mound of fried food. But the three fish filets - each one pretty damn sizeable - was (gasp!) mostly fish. White, flaky, seemingly fresh fish, the kind of quality you certainly don't expect when you waltz up to an outdoor beachfront fried seafood carry out joint. It was perfectly lightly breaded in a way that clings closely to the fish as you break your fork in to a restaurant-worthy chunk of meaty fish, rather than falling off in huge battered chunks to reveal a puny little chunk of shriveled guppy. I will second Blair H. on the desparately seeking salt onion rings. They were desparately seeking more breading, too, in my opinion. Unlike my fish, I'll take those little circles of pseudo-veggie as caked in batter as I can get em. These were unlike any I've seen before, with a sparse and unproportionate amount of bread barely coating a very naked and inappropriately exposed-looking onion. In other news, the boy liked the roast beef sandwich. I don't think he was floored by it, though. I am ashamed to admit that I did not try the namesake item for myself. Did anyone else notice the huge gaps in prices? Obviously, a deli-style sandwich and fresh seafood fall into different pricing categories, but the range still sort of threw me for a loop. With some of the other seafood items upwards of $17, the only one that fit the bill of cheap eats was the fish platter (a MEDIUM "side order" of clams is $26!!). I really wanted the fried clams but I couldn't bring myself to pay that much for it at a walk-up window. And yet the signature roast beef sandwich earned its "Best of Cheap Eats" crown at a wallet friendly $5 and change. Hmm. read more

It's a classic, which brings out all the tourist, which makes the prices even more at this one then the usual Kelly's... which I believe are already a bit overpriced. The food is good, not thrilling but good. I've gotten to the point though that I'll only come here if someone else requests it. That's based solely on the prices. I really don't get the loud raves for Kelly's. We ordered the famed roast beef sandwich and the famed lobster roll last week, and took them across the street to watch the beach. The roast beef was a good sandwich: nice toasted roll, nice fixings, nice meat. Although it was moist and fresh, the meat wasn't especially well-roasted and flavorful or anything special. In fact we both thought it kind of tasted like a hamburger. And it was an odd mix of in between temperatures: warm bun and cold veggies and meat somewhere in between. But it was a fine sandwich. The lobster roll was bad: watery (as others have noted), not coated sufficiently in mayo to add the right tang (and I kind of hate mayo), and less lobster than other places I've had lobster rolls. The meal was definitely helped by the incredible view. Also, I was really impressed by how nice the counter-workers were, and how patient they were with the never-ending and huge mass of first-timers surrounding the counter. read more

Beefy beefy beefy. So much meat in everything! I felt like a caveman, if a caveman actually cooked his meats, put them between bread slices, and used bbq sauce. It was honestly SOOO beefy, that I had to pull off some of the beef because I was afraid I would drown in it. Same with the clam chowda. Ahhh Kelly's Roast Beef, every time I go home to Boston, whether it is for a weekend or a week I make it a top priority to eat here (or at their loacation on Route 1 in Saugus). The biggest secret to their great sandwiches are their buttered grilled buns, whether it is their classic roast beef sandwich (expect it to be served rare) or my personal favorite their cheese burger. Kelly's also has a large selection of amazing fried seafood as well as their amazing lobster role. I have eaten here probably over 100 times in my life and I have tried about everything on the menu and only very rarely have I been dissapointed. It's great that this location is open till 3am on the weekends for a late night bite to eat. While there is no place to sit and eat here it's pretty cool to sit by the beach and enjoy the view of the ocean, but only a crazy person would swim at Revere Beach. There place on Route 1 is equally good, has tons of space and is very clean. read more

Kelly's is a staple of a New England summer for me; give me some tasty fried clams on the beach, and I'm good to go. Kelly's does their fried clams well; big clams, freshly fried, not too greasy, not too much batter. I've had them at various Kelly's locations (Natick, now-closed Allston), and they're pretty consistently solid everywhere; not the very best I've ever had, but a good version that satisfies my craving nonetheless. I usually get the $13 clam roll plate, which comes with a large amount of clams piled on a buttered and toasted New England hot dog bun (which I usually ignore- I'm here for the clams, don't need any bread filler) with fries and onion rings, both of which are pretty standard/eh. The whole thing is pretty filling, and not terribly priced IMO (stick to the clam roll if you have a normal appetite; the clam plate is a whopping ~$20 and probably best suited to share). It's a grab-and-go type of place, and the best thing to do is cross the street and eat your meal on the beach under one of the pavillions. Summer embodied. read more
