So, the famous Kelly's Roast Beef. I've been living in Mass for 6 years now & just now got a chance to go to Kelly's. I had a bbq roast beef sandwich & shared an order of fried sea scallops with my friends. The prices are def a bit on the higher side, but the food was truly delicious. Loved, loved, loved the scallops. I'm not normally a fried food girl, but the scallops were sweet, tender and perfect! Warning, though. The seagulls are used to being fed, so guard your food well. My friend had half of her sandwich stolen by a seagull, which a flock of seagulls feasted on. I was surprised at their customer service in the fact that when she complained (very sweetly) that the seagulls stole her sandwich that they made her a new one. Like I said beware of the birds, she still wasn't on guard and they stole part of her second sandwich, too. read more

It's been years since I was here and I will only eat at the Revere Beach location. Ate in the Framingham place and it wasn't the same. The roast beef is huge. I had a large and my wife had the small. Couldn't tell the difference. Grilled bun, not toasted. Don't forget the sauce. Dropped a star because the enormous order of onion rings were missing something. My family has been coming here since it opened in 1951. There is nothing like a fish plate, roast beef sandwich, a pint of clam chowdah, a lobstah roll, or an order of chicken fingers to satisfy your cravings. The food is amazing and probably the most consistent restaurant I have ever been to. I enjoy the chicken fingers with duck sauce and the burger. Yes, I'm a southern guy but this is the place that I have come to judge all New England Clam Chowder against and quite frankly none have ever come close to meeting the standard set by this sandwich shop on the shore. I was visiting friends and looking for a place to have lunch and happened upon Kelly's. With Roast Beef in the name I had to try out their roast beef sandwich which is juicy and full of flavor. What I wasn't expecting was how good the clam chowder would be. Maybe it was the overcast blustery, cold rainy day that made it seem so perfect. The creamy richness of the chowder was as close to perfection as I have ever had. This will definitely be on my list of stops anytime I go to the Boston area if for nothing more than another bowl of their clam chowder.... read more

Kelly's has a very long and famous history. However the only thing I recall about Kelly's now is its history. While it still has a fantastic spot across from the beach, the food is very expensive and really doesn't stand out for the price that is charged. I've dined at other competitors and marvel at how little it costs to dine with them as opposed to Kelly's Now I know what you're going to say "Better quality comes at a higher price." I normally would agree completely if that were true. The food isn't horrible by any means, but I get the impression that the name is what is important now. Kelly's Roast Beef sticks in the mind of the locals and we recall a time when they were really great. As a result, we keep going back and hoping that this time -- The present will match the past we remember. Sadly it doesn't. I go out of my way to drive off the beach and dine elsewhere. I hadn't been here in years so I was excited about ordering from here again. I felt as though it was a bit chaotic when ordering. There was no organized line to order which was frustrating because there were a lot of people just standing around so we didn't know who ordered or not. I ordered the chicken wing plate. It was ehh... I did not like the batter they cook the wings with. I felt like I was eating a lot of fat. Next time I come back I'll order something else. The young man behind the counter was excellent. Very attentive and professional. It took me a while to place my order because I hadn't been there in a while so I was very indecisive but he helped me make a decision. There is no ambiance; this is a walk up sandwich shop on revere beach boulevard, right by the beach. There are some nice park shelters and benches to sit across the street by the sand and the 4 mile long wall usually is alright to sit on. Pigeons and sea gulls the sizes of pterodactyls lurk so guard your food and duck the poo. Trash is often evident, prices are high (IMHO), and local efforts at gentrification have only pissed off the blue collar base that supports beach front establishments. Open late for the boozy crowd who are generally fairly tame. And so why a 5 star? Just the best damn roast beef sandwich there is. That's all. It is generally more to the rare side, if that's not for you try anything else on the menu, it is all damn fine! Lobster roll, Scallop plate especially excellent. There is a fancier sit down version up in Peabody MA, also great, but given to overcooking the beef, or rushing the cooking or something, cause the one at the beach is still better. Kelly's on Revere Beach has a very tender place in my heart because I used to order their Fried Shrimp Basket LATE at night when no other restaurants were open. I worked late those days and so did they! The experiece here will be an efficient one. The Staff is quite controlled and in synch with one another... making this purchase process a very smooth one and the multiple lines with windows just moves right along. After a bit of delayed travel, Kelly's was one of the few places not too far off the highway that was open around midnight, so we trekked out to the beach (which I'm sure looks gorgeous during the day but was quite foggy this Friday night) and walked up to Kelly's, which really does have a casual, beach-y, and somewhat touristy feel to it. The guys at the front of the register were nice enough in taking our order quickly, and we didn't have to wait more than a few minutes before our food was ready to go. There are some tables you can sit at outside, but again - cool, misty weather at midnight - made us head back to the car and chow down before hitting the road. The food itself was okay. I went with the BBQ pulled beef, which in many respects reminded me of how pulled pork is prepared - shredded and doused with BBQ sauce (in this case, a bit overly marinated). For $8, it definitely will fill you up, and the flavors are pretty solid. My wife went with the lobster roll, which, while pleasantly-sized and very sumptuous, did not have the same kind of freshness that I would experience later in Portland. It was also a bit too doused in mayo for my liking. The side of onion rings were a waste of money, IMO - very chewy and not crisp at all...they'd clearly been sitting around for a while. While it certainly did the trick in satiating our appetite late at night, it's probably a place I'd come back to after exploring other options. A Revere staple. You walk across the street barefoot order Kelly's and then sit on the beach wall and feed it to the birds. My favorite past time. They make fresh homemade onion rings which are to die for and they are so greasy you can see them from outside the bag. Yum. The clam chowder is good with lots of clams and potatoes but it's watery. It's just a different type of clam chowder, I do prefer more creamy but it's still decent. One drawback about this place is that they skimped the portion sizes when they got popular...just like most places. You can get roast beef and seafood dinners anywhere which are more generous for cheaper. It just doesn't have that beach feel, though. read more

I have been to Kelly's probably over a hundred times (since I was a wee tot)...It is pretty much perfect. When my friend came into Boston from Iceland for 24 hours, it was one of the places I had to bring him. This is less of a review and more of advice. 8am is not too early for Kelly's- especially if you are hungover. The breakfast sandwiches are the best in the land....and when I am feeling particularly hungover, I get a coffee shake. It is a caloric bonanza. If what you are getting is fried...then what you are getting needs extra tartar. Unless you are with over 4 people, do not get the large fry. And if you are deciding between the onion rings and the fries, go for the onion. The roast beef sandwich is the best on the north shore- but IF and only IF you ask them to slice it thin. If not, you are going to be chewing down tough pieces of thickly cut cow. Get it with sauce, cheese, and mayo- with extra sauce on the side to dip. Clam chowder is a must and the best in the land- traditionally made thin like it is supposed to be here in the Commonwealth. My friend Jess swears by the hotdog. But I think she is an asshole for going to Kelly's and getting a hotdog. There I said it. Bring some sort of weapon with you if you plan on eating on the beach. I have seen many a sandwich taken by the 'flying rats" (seaguls) that hang there. They walk with the people as if they are equals and aren't afraid. Anything fried there is good. I recently saw chicken salad and a reuben on the menu...If you plan on getting either, perhaps my friend Jess can take you when she gets her hotdog because you all would essentially be assholes. Thank god I am not allergic to seafood. Very rarely will you find me at Revere Beach but when I AM there, I'd purposely park near Kelly's. Or if I'm parked far away, I would make the mile-long trek to Kelly's. Now that's love right there ... or I'm just a fatty ;( I've been to 4 of 5 locations and this one is the best. I don't know of any other chain that does fried seafood better. The buffalo wings and burgers aren't bad either. I have yet to try the roast beef sandwiches but I always feel compelled to get the fried seafood, which never disappoints and is always fresh. -1 star for the not-so-good items like the milky clam chowder, dry cheese fries, and over-fried onion rings. read more

I like Kelly's. In particular I like this Kelly's. I like the long wait, and the uncomfortable tables all because it feels as if you're on vacation. With the beach just across the street, you can't go wrong. I usually have their roast beef, which I think is very good. (Disclaimer: Growing up in NY, I thought Arby's made good roast beef). This weekend I decided to try the kids plate of chicken fingers and fries. I was not disappointed, or hungry. The portion was huge. The chicken was great and the fries were, as always, the perfect crispiness. Kelly's was always the late night pit stop after an evening of rocking out at the Rat or the Channel. Those two clubs are gone but Kelly's is still going strong. I never came here specifically for the roast beef. Mino's Roast Beef is thinly sliced and more flavorful. Overall Kelly's has a very respectable roast beef sandwich. What I did love was the shrimp basket, chicken fingers and onion rings. All that grease always tastes so good on a belly full of alcohol. The lobstah rolls are supposed to be pissah. Kelly's is pretty legendary, it's true. I am vegetarian, so I've never actually had the roast beef myself, but I do hear it's good! I can say that they make a fine grilled cheese though, and that their honey mustard sauce is out of this world. Back in my chicken-eating days, I used to request extra honey mustard to dip my chicken into, but though I've since given up the chicken, I still request extra honey mustard sauce...to dip fries in! Even if I don't order fries myself, someone in my ordering group will have ordered them, and since they come in ridiculously huge portions, there will inevitably be some leftover fry action for that honey mustard. Revere Beach has a bad reputation, but the city really is tryyyyyyyying to clean up the beach area! They spent a lot of time and money last summer/fall widening the sidewalks and eliminating the angled parking (in favor of the parallel variety), and they are bringing lots of new events into the area (namely the sandcastle festival in July, which is awesome). Scared as you may be, take that blue line out to Wonderland, brave the legions of vicious seagulls, and get yourself some Kelly's! read more

But I must be out of practice, because last time, I ordered the fish n' chips (YUM!), strolled across the street, and sat down with my bro on the beach to eat. Went to Kelly's on a beautiful Friday night during this difficult pandemic. Most people were walking in two's or alone on the beach, respecting social distancing. And Kelly's protocol was right in line with it. They've set up a system with limited people coming to the windows, placing taped lines on the sidewalk for those waiting for their orders. A manager out front kept the orders moving respectfully, filling requests for extra this or that. Signs on social distancing were plentiful, but occasionally he would politely ask the crowd to respect distances between each other, asking people within the same party to stay together and send only one of them to the window. So thank you Kelly's for protecting your employees and the public. BTW, the food is as good as ever -- you might say wicked good. read more

Firstly, the food is great. I frequent the cheeseburger plate, and it comes with the burger and some fries. The burger is decent sized, about 5 times larger than a McDonald's cheeseburger, comes on a sesame seed bun, and there is a good amount of fries on the side. To the best of my knowledge, the food is fresh (a truck comes every morning). I haven't had much of the seafood, so I can't give any judgement on that. The location is prime, on the beach. There is parking, but in the summer it tends to be packed. There is outdoor seating directly outside the joint and across the street in the pavilions. The prices are a tiny bit high, but you get what you pay for. The service is excellent. TL;DR great food, little pricey, great location, awesome service. read more

This is what is called a TOURIST TRAP with amusement park prices and lower quality Their food is terrible and their prices are excessive. When you come to the area everyone says "OMG you have to go to Kelly's" because its something they have heard and everyone said to them "OMG you have to go to Kelly's" but more often than not the people that say this either have never been or haven't been since the 80's. DON'T GO! It will burn a hole in your pocket. I have given this place chance after chance after chance and I always get burned. If you want a soda go somewhere else because they only offer one size called the half filled thimble. Their Roast Beef is Terrible. Their Pastrami is tasteless and the Ruben is so foul that even the cow would be ashamed. They are supposedly known for their Lobster rolls however this will burn a whole in your pocket so deep you might have a new orifice and the worst part is that the lobster is actually bland and flavorless! You get to order with a rude 15 year old kid and then stand in a crowd of people and wait upwards of 30 minutes to actually be served the food through a little window with another rude 15 year old kid who whispers your name and if you don't respond immediately well you might not get your food and be careful because if your not quick someone might also take your food and you will be S.O.L. Yes, Kelly's has changed a little bit since they expanded and became a chain of restaurants. Among other things, It used to be 1 size sodas, now there are 3. However, I love Kelly's on the beach. It's the best fast food you can get, with the best atmosphere to boot. It's on the beach! How can you beat that? It's greasy deliciousness. Do not count your weight watcher points when you go here. The burgers, chicken and hot dogs are awesome. I'm not a big fan of roast beef sandwiches, so I can't comment. The only complain I've heard is sometimes the buttered buns can be gross; I don't agree because it makes it that much better. It's worth noting though. If you don't like buttered toasted buns, you probably won't like Kell'ys. read more
