People on the North Shore LOVE roast beef and I'm not sure why. It's decent...but it seems like most places consider themselves to be "famous." Kelly's doesn't say they are famous, but they certainly are in this area. I've been a few times now and I like it. I will say that to get a "meal" it's on the higher end for price - I paid nearly $13. For that money, I'd rather spend a few more dollars and sit down for a nice meal. Try the frappes! The roast beef here is... amazing. The ellipsis indicating pause for effect of course. Easily the best fast food I can think of on the North Shore and my favorite traditional roast beef sandwich. The clam chowder here is one of my absolute favorites, surpassing many of the big-name Boston restaurants and the San Francisco vendors I've been to. It is, admittedly, not for everyone though. The clam chowder is extremely runny and is loaded with small pieces of clam. It is as thin as, ::shudder::, some Manhattan Clam Chowders that I've had, heavy like a French Onion soup, but still amazingly delicious. The dining room is bright and inviting, but no more than the McD's across the way. The fries and onion rings are good, but you have to eat it with ketchup. I was going to give this Kelly's only 2 stars because the food is good, but the price is a bit high for a (if you break it down) a fast-food roast beef place. But the drive-thru and huge dining space bumps it up a star in my book. The interior is pretty cool, with a lot of old school items from the original Revere Beach location dating back to the early 1900s. Plus it's always been clean when dining in. During the busy hours you can usually find 4-5 registers open, making your wait time minimal (usually). It's also one of the rare Kelly's with a drive-thru, which is HUGE being located right on Route 1. Easy in & out if you're picking up something on the way home. Despite the prices being a bit high for my liking, when I do feel like getting some Kelly's, I usually get a good meal. You can't go wrong with a large beef, pile of rings & fries, or a double burger. But like anyone from the North Shore will tell you, the "must order" at any Kelly's is the clam chowder. Never had a bad bowl! Even the lobster rolls aren't bad (usually better at Revere Beach, in my opinion) but like the running theme of this, the price usually sways me off them. read more

I have been going to the Kelly's in Revere since I was a little kid and my parents would pile us 4 girls into the van and take us for some fried clams on the beach. I would sit on the beach wall and split a clam plate with my sister while we fought off seagulls. Memories, I love it. Now I am a grown up and so I grab the man and head to the Kelly's in Saugus in my own car. This time, no one is getting any of my fried clams! I still love the clam plate. It is the perfect fried fest with whole clams, onion rings (which I love, even though I do not like onions), and french fries (which I will share, because there are so many). I love the tarter sauce at Kelly's and always ask for extra because it tastes great on the fries too. It does not happen often, but on trips when I don't want to do the clam thing, I go for the lobster roll. It is an insane amount of lobster with just a little mayo and celery. Perfect. The best I have had, hands down. The man loves the roast beef, but I have never tried it. Judging from the fact that he downs a large one in under 2 minutes, I would take his word for it. The perfect end to summer was Revere Beach surf and turf,that is to share a clam plate and a large roast beef sandwich at Kelly's. After my last failed attempt to get to Revere Beach ,during sand castle competition I had to make it back before summers end. As expected the clams were crispy and delicious,as were the onion rings and fries . Roast beef sandwich was busting at the seems and not as rare as usual,again just the way I like it. I've only been to this location once and the Revere location once, but there is a clear difference in quality between the two locations. I'd easily give the Revere location 5 stars just for the value and taste of their lobster roll. The lobster roll here, however was altogether smaller, and the lobster itself did not taste as fresh and was not nearly as delightfully plump. I didn't sit down to eat my roll until at least 45 minutes after I purchased it, yet the lobster was so cold that I can only imagine it must have been a seafood popsicle at the time of purchase. While this is something that I'm sensitive to, my friend who also had lobster rolls from both locations honestly couldn't taste a difference and likely would have given equal ratings to both locations. read more

Great place to visit when you're in Saugus. Most places open till 3 am or later include McDonald's and if you're looking for some real food, this is perfect place. The drive thru option is super convenient and if you're looking for a place you can sit in privacy, this place is the spot for you. The large size of the place allows people to really spread out and enjoy the company of themselves or other guest you decide to tag along (even in the parking lot). Food is above average. The only instructive criticism I have is that the customer service could improve. The folks here are very nice and the food is fairly priced. It's not terribly flavorful though. I had the clam roll. The fries were soggy and the onion rings bland. The roll was fine, but there wasn't much spice. I needed a lot of salt, ketchup, and tartar sauce to accompany this plate. The best things to order here are the clam chowder (it is not thick and creamy, nor is clam chowder supposed to be) tons of fresh clams. The roast beef, excellent most of the time. And the fried scallops and fried clams. The chicken fingers and burgers are less pricey and good too. None of the food was bad, it was just that nothing had much flavor. Food seemed fresh and was not cheap like McDonald's or old like a cheap sitdown restaurant. I had both lovster and roast beef and neither had much flavor. Gluten free rolls were great quality, sit down service was nice, portions were good sized for the price. People taking food orders didn't know what could be ordered gluten free, and the person they asked didn't know. A North Shore institution. I've been coming here since I was little, where my brother and I would scramble to get a seat over by the fish tank. This is definitely the best of the restaurant versions of Kelly's. I love the tuna salad roll, served on a greasy, buttery toasted hot dog bun. Other highlights are the french fries, roast beef, clam roll (according to my BFF), and the chocolate frappe. Kelly's is fairly pricey- the other night I got a small roast beef plate (includes fries) with cheese, sauce and mayo and a chocolate frappe, which came to about $11-12. Well if you're like me and you like your food fried, then YES come here. BUT get ready to sacrifice something. When you walk in the atmophere is cool, lots of carosel horses mounted on display (I bet my friend who is about 6'8" to climb on one, but then retracted my offer because we were the only people there eating at the time, and that would be weird...) and theres plenty of seating. When I got to the menus, I died a little inside because I know this will end with my friends complaining about how long it took for me to make up my mind. An excellent eatery where you can take the whole family including babies and not feel ill at ease. I had the lobster roll and although somewhat pricey, it was excellent with meaty chunks of lobster. Others in our party had the crab cake sandwich and cheeseburger, all good. Finally, the 3 year old in our party was enamored with their macaroni and cheese! Can't beat some good Kelly's roast beef. 95% of the time I go to this location, but I do love the one on the beach as well. There is no better clutch spot then Kelly's when it's 2:30 in the morning and you are starving. I couldn't even begin to tell you how many times I've sat in that drive thru, waiting for my grilled cheese and a order of chicken fingers. After loving this place previously, my husband and I were very disappointed at our last visit. Husband got the roast beef, which is usually juicy and delicious. Not this time, it was over cooked and flavorless :( I got the French dip, ugh!!! Couldn't eat more than a bite. The au jus was nothing more than the water that the beef was boiled in, and don't get me started on the shredded boiled beef that was in my sandwich. Totally gross!!! We won't be back. Kelly's is a staple for Friday lunch on my way in to work once or twice a month. Ironically I'm not a fan of their Roast Beef (since it's a roast beef joint) but love their hamburger meal. I expected to be wowed but was underwhelmed. I feel like I can get the same sandwich or better at any deli and actually think Mike's and Lambert's is way better.
