Fish sandwich tastes like poop. Disgusting!!!! Will NEVER go here again and I've been going here for years NEVER again. At the Saugus location, our cashier, named Hanya, was the rudest girl. When I gave them the poop sandwich back and asked for a grilled cheese instead - I was given an attitude. Two girls walked over and gave me my grilled cheese with a smirk on their faces. I heard about this place from a coworker who used to live in Mass. I was heading down to drop my kids off at the airport and was excited for Sonic (ocean water and a corn dog) and he recommended this place instead. The reviews threw me a bit, I was nervous. Easy to access off of broadway, with a nice large parking lot, this place seems a great stop on the way to the airport. Super clean bathrooms and tons of seating add to the allure of this place. Add in the huge fish tank and the awesome decor and the interior is quite nice and seemingly clean. The counter is huge and the lines were short even though the place seemed very busy. Walked up to the counter, received the usual Massachusetts greeting of 'what do you want' and placed my order. My son wanted clam strips, my daughter a hotdog. I went with the recommended small roast beef with sauce. My buddy said it was amazing. Now I didn't get to try the meals for my kids, they took them with them into the hotel with their mother. But they looked decent enough. The roast beef though.... was delicious. The bun was chewy but crisp on the edges, the meat nice and lean. The sauce was heaven. I texted my buddy how much I enjoyed it but wished there was more sauce, he replied 'yeah I always order extra'. Wish I had known that before! The price was ok, $30 for everything. One star down cause the service was lackluster. No one seemed to want to be there, they forgot a drink and just overall seemed put off by our presence. Oh well, the food was good, and at the end of the day, that is what matters. Funny story: so I didn't know how to order the sandwich so I just said I'd take a small roast beef sandwich. I am giving it 4 stars just because it sometimes isn't great but tonight it was delicious! Been going here since I can remember and if you get it on their good days it is one of the best! I always ask for extra Roast Beef BBQ sauce on the side as the sauce gets absorbed into the roll and it needs more sauce. Also always order with cheese. Founded in 1951 and I think that was the year they cooked our food. The roast beef was tough and well done. The bun over toasted. Try Glens, the old Bill and Bobs at Kappts on Rt1 north, excellent. The clam platter we received was waiting for them to screw up the sandwiches I think because it came out stone cold. The replacement order came out hot and fresh. The fried shrimp are hammered flat and look like something right out of the bag from COSTCO. This location opened in 1994 and it looks like that was the last time they invested in the location. Talk about an institution wow I go back to my teenage years down Revere beach with Kelly's and I've basically always gotten a mix of the same items in 1 form or another Roast beef w cheese sauce on side, Double cheeseburger spicy mustard pickles and onions, Clam plate, Lobster roll, Chicken Fingers and Grilled cheese. Now some things I get much more than others and I'll go on a spree with certain things and get it every time for 5-6 visits in a row but one thing is certain whatever I get I'm never disappointed. From the days waiting 10-15 deep at the beach to waiting around the building in Saugus the more things change the more they stay the same Kelly's Roast Beef has been consistently great for the decades I've been going there it would be the highlight of our day walking from the T station at the beach lay in sun all day then Kelly's. Haven't been here in years but was in the area so we stopped in. The haddock plate was delicious and they were 2 decent pieces of fish, lots of fries and a few onion rings. Cheese burger plate had a generous amount of fries and a good sized burger. The chicken tenders were not as great as I remembered, they were on the chewy side. Otherwise everything was fine. This place is a shell of what the Logan location is and days of by gone. A beautiful aquarium, carousel decorations, and tons of booth seating. It's a bit of drab decor with young faces manning the cash registers. Even though the Logan airport location has really really really slow service the food was amazing there. Here, the lobster rolls are terrible and disgusting. Gummy, watery, and flavorless. The fried seafood is tasteless and sad. While the roast beef is probably the only safe choice. Went her for the first time the other day. Ordered the small roast beef sandwich and a drink. I sat down and got busy on the phone and didn't realize the tIme and then one if the employees came by and noticed I hadn't received my food and offered a some free food. I chose the chowder. It came pretty quickly followed by my sandwich. The chowder was good but pretty watery. The roast beef was great. If it wasn't for the long wait and the watery chowder I'd have given 4 stars. I visited this place while I was in Massachusetts, the seating area is large and it seems like a fun spot for kids. I ordered the lobster roll at $22 that I did not enjoy at all. I also had the clam chowder that I enjoyed, it was light , very different than the regular cream based clam chowder. My friend had the crab cake sandwich and fried shrimp , she enjoyed it. The food is not what I remember. We went to the Saugus location for dine in. Covid protocols as with every place are the same annoyance. No self serve soda or condiments and a lot of tables are taped off. They also have a huge drive thru business so ordering inside is a burden because wait times are longer than usual. I also noticed they aren't quick to clean tables in between patrons. I actually had to inform a family who sat down next to us that another family had just left and the area wasn't cleaned. As far as the food it was not very good. My daughters man n cheese was over cooked and the powdered cheese wasn't even fully blended. It was not edible. The chicken fingers and seafood were all over cooked. Onion rings and fries were the only thing I'd say were good. We won't be going back. read more

The restaurant has very nice fish tanks and nostalgic photos of the area on the walls. There are many booths, tables, and countertops to sit at. We visited at about 11 30. Not many people there. I had the roast beef sandwich, strawberry shake and fries. Horrible would be the only way to describe this visit. There was not a clean table, booth , or countertop. The fish tanks had smudges of ketchup and finger prints on the glass. The food was not good. Roll was stale, beef was gray. Looked like it was portioned out the night before and left in plastic wrap overnight? It resembled a puck Fries where cold and soggy and a very small portion. Shake was the highlight. I give it a 5 . I drive between Portland Maine and Boston a lot. I also drive between Portland Maine and NYC a lot. Kelly's is my favorite stop heading into Boston along route 1. They have a huge dining room if you are looking to take a driving break, but I mostly use the drive through and get right back on the road. I almost always order a large roast beef with horseradish sauce and that's it. I used to order all manner of fries and onion rings and drinks, but no more. The large roast beef sandwich is more than enough food for one adult and if you are able to eat the whole thing, should hold you over for the rest of the day, making it a very good value. I know now Kelly's offers a way more expanded menu than they used to, but I suggest staying with their original product. I have been to this location about 5 times now in the past year and have never really had any complaints. They have great service, always welcoming and friendly. If you aren't a seafood lover they still have plenty of other options like roast beef, hot dogs, burgers and many others. It has a sort of sober feel because they give you a tag number after ordering and once your food is ready a server will find your number and bring your food directly to your table. They also have a condiment station where you can fill up on all the mayo, ketchup, relish or mustard that your heart desires. It's been years since my last Kelly's experience. I remember cruising the strip in the Monte Carlo to the Revere Beach location. Back in the day I used to believe their seafood was some of the best I had ever eaten. Well, the Saugus location definitely missed the mark for me today. I also enjoyed my fish n' chips today - flaky fish with a light batter. Well....enjoyed it until the point when I found the dreaded HAIR! Nothing puts the brakes on lunch faster than finding a hair in your food! And it definitely was not my own - ugh! Then I noticed my dad struggling to cut into the filet on his fish sandwich. I looked closely only to discover it was undercooked and had an awful rubbery appearance. We sent the sandwich back and they did bring us a new one with an apology. However, this is still unacceptable especially paired with the hair. What was going on in that kitchen today? Furthermore, the French fries and onion rings were very dry. What can I say, I'm a sucker for roast beef. I fell in love with the original Revere location as a child and even though I originally rejected the "new" Kelly's, they've all grown on me. Yes, you miss the crowded beach atmosphere, but they do have very interesting fish tanks to keep you busy. Bonus points: you don't have to chase away the seagulls. I usually get the roast beef - ordered rare - on an untoasted bun. Heaven on a plate I tell ya. Sometimes I mix it up and get a corned beef, but I usually regret it. It's not up to my Jewish grandmother's standards. They come with chips, but I upgrade to fries. Might as well live it up, but order them well done or they're wimpy. You know, I almost didn't want to write this. I went to school in Boston for 4 years of my live. I lived in the general Boston metropolitan area for 6 more. In this time, Kelly's roast beef became a staple of my diet. I actually remember when they opened this Saugus location for the first time. It became a go to for me when I lived in Malden and I didn't feel like driving over to Revere. And I always considered it every bit as good as the Revere location. I haven't lived in Boston for 10 years now. But every time I visit, I hit one of the Kelly's locations for my roast beef sandwich along with whatever else I'm hankering for. I've never been let down. Until now. So, I'm actually going to do something a little unique, at least I think it is. I'm not only going to take my wife's opinion into account with mine, I'm going to share with you what my circle of friends who live near this Kelly's location tell me. Because this time around, I got an earful on them. To the owners of Kelly's: If their opinions are any indication, you now have a problem with people thinking that you are slipping in quality. Whether this is actually true or not, perception often becomes reality in this restaurant business whether you like it or not. Now, on this trip, I went for the surf and turf option. I love this idea of getting a small beef and small lobster roll on one plate. I was also offered a mix of onion rings and fries as a side. This is a good mix. The roast beef was still good. I don't think they've lost it there. Although not getting my usual large was a different experience, I had no complaints there. The lobster roll, well I enjoyed the first bite. But as I ate, I noticed something.... the lobster had no real flavor this time. Maybe I was ruined. After all, I ate in Maine for lunch earlier that afternoon and had great lobster. Should I expect Kelly's lobster to be as good? Maybe not, but it used to be close enough. This wasn't. I mean, it wasn't a bad lobster roll. But it wasn't what I remembered. The wife went for a burger, and deemed it very uninspiring. She didn't bother to finish it. I took a bite, and... well, I know Kelly's was never known for burgers as much. But this was a frozen patty cooked and slapped on a bun. Nothing to it really. But here's a real shocker. I've always gone for the chicken fingers here. They've always been great. And we ate with one of my closest friends in the Boston area who has been going to Kelly's all his life. He knows the taste of this food like the back of his hand. And all day long, he was dreaming of having a chicken finger platter here. He said the chicken fingers on this day weren't that great. Oh, now you might as well tell me there's no Santa Claus too! So when I visited other friends nearby after my meal, and told them of our experience, that's when they started unloading their recent experiences on me. Apparently they believe that Kelly's started sliding in overall quality about 8 months ago. They're using inferior products now. The roast beef may still be good, but that's it. I'm just adding their opinions in for added perspective. I suppose I'll just have to stick with roast beef sandwiches and that's it from here. But I'll say it... I'm a little sad today. Kelly's recently cut their late-night hours back. The drive-thru is now only open until 3 AM on Friday and Saturday, and on all other nights closes at 1 AM. Good atmosphere, clean, and spacious. They have a huge fish tank right where you order and Art with old pictures of the Boston/ North Shore area. The hand made inions rings have a nice hard crispy fried shell, it sounds like they do a house made batter for these. The fish could have been fried just a little longer, but I can appreciate the ease in which you could slice the next bite right off. For the price, speed, and to satisfy a fried fish/seafood platter I'd recommend. If you need more tartar sauce or lemon wedges you will need to ask the front counter, they don't keep these items next to the ketchup/napkin area. read more
