We really enjoy visiting these Italian delis! Lots of prepared foods, breads, pastries, groceries, frozen foods, and sandwiches. We picked up two great looking items from their prepared foods showcase -a big slab of Eggplant Parmigiana and two big slabs of lasagna. They were priced at $7.99 a pound and both were terrific. We sampled some of each for dinner last night and loved them both -the Eggplant was soft and tender and the Lasagna was saucy, cheesy with nice slices of meatballs throughout. Perfection ! I also ordered an Italian Combo sandwich on a roll ($9). I asked them to hold the pepperoni, which they offered to substitute some mortadella instead. That was nice. I asked for all of the veggies (except olives) and I gotta tell you, they put some kind of a hot relish on it which I loved, but you might not if your tolerance for spice is less than mine. Anyway, we paid about $36 for all of that and will get 5 meals out of the purchase. Definitely a great value. And the service? PERFECT!! The young folks who made my sandwich and the woman at the cash register were great to deal with. Kensington Market has risen firmly into our Top 10% of Italian markets. read more

Kensington Market is a small Italian Market that sells hot and cold prepared foods, grinders and grocery items. I'm reviewing it exclusively for it's takeout food business, which I've sampled several times over the years because I have family in the area. Service is usually friendly, and sometimes, like today, a bit distracted. I ordered chicken cutlets with melted mozzarella and vodka sauce, a pasta salad with sun dried tomatoes and oil and delicious sautéed mushrooms and onions, which I didn't need, but they were fresh cooked as I was ordering and couldn't resist. The chicken dish was very good and the pasta salad was decent. Other prepared choices included pasta, sausage and peppers and roasted veggies. My wife ordered a chicken parm grinder, which was good, except for the fact that the cheese was not fully melted. I can't award more than 4 Stars when that happens, but I will give Kensington Market Four Stars since everything was good. read more

COVID-19 era: other than direction arrows and everyone being masked, Kensington Market is still its too cute, too tasty self. This is a diminutive Italian grocery with produce, dry goods, and choice cuts is also (I believe) the best sandwich counter in this tiny town. You won't get out too quick since everything is made to order and they are popular. The trade off is that you have freshly sliced sandwich meat piled high on your crusty, fresh (San Remo?) roll. The Italian combo comes sweet or hot, the roast beef is good and bloody, and the salad case is a mix of veggies and meat, antipasto or Mayo. After agonizing over colorful salads--8 ounce and up, way up since they cater--the indecision factor is made no better by the presence of dessert and chocolate choices. There's no number tickets, so find the line's end, or make sure you aren't cutting. If you're in a hurry just pick a roll from the case by the checkout, but we've always found Kensington Market worth the wait. read more

I was planning to make bracciole and had gone to a couple of grocery stores, none of which would or could help me with top round steak. Went to Kensington Market as a last resort. So glad I did. They had it and the very nice butcher cut the amount I needed and butterflied it beautifully, saving me time and trouble with my soon-to-be delicious meal. The atmosphere is what you'd expect in a deli/butcher shop. It's clean and efficient. Hardworking and pleasant staff--especially by New England standards -- run the place. read more

Needed dinner in a pinch and I remembered going here a while back to get some steaks. I was right down the street and figured I'd stop in and see what they had to offer. I was really impressed with all the prepared food that was available. All kinds of salads and Italian staples. I went with eggplant rollitini, potatoes, and roasted zucchini also a small container of potato salad. Everything was excellent, very well prepared and tasted great. Prices were very good compared to another deli I frequent occasionally. The also have a nice meat section and frozen raviolis etc. The staff were super friendly and helpful. After reading the reviews I figured will give it a shot,what a mistake I made. I walk in a little after 5pm and it was literally chaos behind the counter there had to be a dozen teenagers all horsing around I had no clue what was going on. There was maybe another 4 or 5 customers in the store and I made eye contact with one and we both looked at each other the same thinking what is happening here. Anyhow, one teenager take my order and he was rude when I asked him if he could speak up a little bit because it was so noisy and then he in a mocking manner started almost yelling at that point I should've just walked out but I didn't. So he gets a container after I ordered the chicken cutlets hand it off to this African American younger lady who couldn't speak a word of English and she started putting chicken wings in the container I was trying to tell her no I want the cutlets but she couldn't understand me and eventually a shorter older then the teens man I got his attention and told him she's not giving my the cutlets with a attitude he says,"we'll is it you want" I told him 4 chicken cutlets he grabs the container out of her hand dumpster the wings back and with his bare hands grabs the cutlets. So now 3 different set of hands on my container. I was going to eat in my car but since I felt the cutlets were contaminated from being handled I waited and reheated in the oven to kill any germs. Safe to say I'll never go back and would highly advise to keep driving by this chaotic establishment. read more

I came here to try their grinders... and almost had to abort my mission once I walked in and saw the deli cases chock full of hot and cold dishes. There was the usual stuff like lasagna, cutlets, pasta salads, etc., but also several things I couldn't even put a name to. I was so sorely tempted, but I stayed on task. I ordered ham, Genoa, capicola, provolone, lettuce, tomato, oil and vinegar, and salt and pepper. The vinegar was balsamic, and for the capicola, they asked me "hot or sweet"? This was the first time I'd ever been asked that. I'm not sure I even knew that sweet capicola existed. I opted for hot. There was a hefty but not overwhelming amount of meat. I was slightly disappointed that there seemed to be a little more ham than salami or capicola. The bread was obviously baked in the store - soft, chewy, fresh, delicious. The balsamic wasn't too noticeable, but I think that was my fault for blocking it with lettuce and tomato; I should have gotten roasted peppers instead. Lesson learned! Fortunately, the coldcuts had more than enough flavor to stand on their own. This was the first store outside the New Haven area that I'd seen carrying Foxon Park soda, so I picked up a gassosa. Equally remarkable to me was the fact that they had Martin Rosol's smoked kielbasa. I had thought you could only get that at, well, Martin Rosol's. And this was just a casual glance through their cases. I wonder what I missed. Overall, I'd give the Kensington Market a solid recommendation based on the grinder alone, and from what I saw of the offerings inside their deli cases, I think another visit or two might turn that recommendation into a zealous endorsement (and bump up my Yelp rating to a full 5 stars). I just moved to Berlin a month ago and I am trying as many places as possible. My co-worker, a lifelong resident of Berlin/Kensington, raved about this place and I love local yocal hotspots. One Saturday I was in town and was hungry. I saw the sign for Kensington Market and pulled in the parking lot on the left. I came at the wrong time and it was crazy busy, but it was a good sign that this was a legit place. Unfortunately, I had a new teenage employee who was very nervous and had no concept of food as I had to ask him to put tomato sauce on my eggplant grinder. Nonetheless, it was delish and he was very sincere. Next time I'm there, I will try one of their legendary house made sausages. read more

I use to go here all the time and order chicken cutlet but now they use a smaller grinder and give u less cutlets and charge the same price . I noticed this for going over a month asked why owner couldn't answer me . Also they weren't as busy anymore at lunch when they were so packed you couldn't get in the door . Definitely something going on . Don't take away from your loyal customers to put couple extra bucks on your pocket . Your are losing customers. The ones that make the business. This place is just ok. Their bread is fine and so is the meats. The employees have their bad days which I'm fine with unless they swear.( that hasn't happened yet) this all changed when I had a little situation last Christmas. My family is part Italian so we have a huge Italian Christmas family reunion. I purchased shrimp but soon realized I purchased the wrong kind. So then I went back there hoping to be able to return them and get the kind I wanted. But that was not the case. The owner refused to take them back and kept giving convenient excuses on why he couldn't. He talked to me in a very rude tone and even charged me extra for the ones I wanted. Every small town in Connecticut seems to have one of these. The little all-in-one market, complete with prepared foods, a few dry goods, deli, butcher, bakery. This one's very cute. Don't be fooled by the negative review - there's ample parking to the left of the market, the food is very good, and everyone working there was extremely nice - not a snob to be found. I'd say the butcher shop is the most intriguing feature, as they carry a variety of house made sausages in addition to the usual cuts. I just needed some dinner, so I went for a nice slice of quiche to take home. Man, was it decadent; full of ham and bacon, it was a dinner for a king. There appeared to be a nice selection of prepared foods, including pasta dishes and meatballs. Kensington Market has scored a handsome "Victory" in my book :). read more

Fresh Boars head cold cuts, fresh roasted peppers daily, fresh baked rolls and subs. YOU CANNOT GO WRONG HERE!!! I am a bit of a snob when it comes to pizza and Italian delis and Kensington Deli has all of the qualities of a top flight, east coast style italian deli. Big, flavorful sandwiches, fresh hot lunch menu that changes daily and a friendly staff that overwhelms you with service. Kensington Market also carries a variety of dried and fresh sausages not to mention the rest of the staples you would find in any italian deli (roasted peppers, eggplant, pasta, etc., etc.) Like other reviewers, very surprised there are not more reviews for this small town gem. I am partial to the italian grinder (sub for all you non new englanders) but rocked a fantastic turkey with provolone and freshly roasted peppers today that included a side of cheesy vegetable risotto and fresh sausage and peppers. Their hot menu is diverse and more importantly, very delicious with everything is made from scratch. While Kensinton Market does not have the widespread appeal of places like Nardelli's in Waterbury, it definitely holds it own. Already looking forward to my next visit the next time I am in CT. If you are ever on Farmington Avenue in Kensington, stop in for a grinder. You won't regret you did. read more

I have been coming to Kensington Market pretty regularly ever since I discovered their delicious breaded beef cutlets a few years ago. Whenever I visit, I usually end up leaving with some other great dish from their changing selection of prepared foods. Most of their dishes are hits, but their eggplant parm is particularly excellent. I am always warmly welcomed and treated well by the owners and their staff. This is a "go to" place for me when I don't have time to cook and want a home cooked style meal at a fair price. Glad to have them nearby. read more

What a great little deli. This place used to be the Victory Market (named after the WWII wictory) for years. I went to an event that they catered and it was FANTASTIC! Since the event, I have been to their store. Everything is made fresh daily and they also have a nice little store that sells many different Italian items. The chicken parm grinder is TO DIE FOR! They actually sell out of the chicken cutlets sometimes. Minus 1 star for higher-than-should-be prices and the parking is very tough. I would reccommend this to anyone. read more

It's a little store that has an overrated opinion of itself. They offer sale items in the window and then when you inquire about them they said they made a mistake and laughed us out of the store. As a 20 year Newington Resident we won't mind the short trip to Public Market for cheaper prices and better customer service. One of the best hand-crafted sandwiches I've ever had. Love that they charge you for the weight of the meat you order, and then make a monster sammy with it! In the multiple years I have visited this delectable establishment, I have never found disappointment (save for the one instance in which I pulled a human hair out of my eggplant... Fortunately, it was long - and the eggplant delicious, nonetheless). While the market can, at times, find itself awash in a sea of hungry customers, the wait time is always minimal - and the counter staff is endlessly ready to serve, and dedicate ample time to the customer at hand. After my first question she asked if it was my first time there. She was vey willing to answer all of my questions and offered samples of almost everything! I decided to get a chicken cutlet grinder with Parmesan cheese, marinara sauce and sautéed onions. I was full after eating half of it! Most items are of the Italian variety.
