Kensington Market is a small Italian Market that sells hot and cold prepared foods, grinders and grocery items. I'm reviewing it exclusively for it's takeout food business, which I've sampled several times over the years because I have family in the area. Service is usually friendly, and sometimes, like today, a bit distracted. I ordered chicken cutlets with melted mozzarella and vodka sauce, a pasta salad with sun dried tomatoes and oil and delicious sautéed mushrooms and onions, which I didn't need, but they were fresh cooked as I was ordering and couldn't resist. The chicken dish was very good and the pasta salad was decent. Other prepared choices included pasta, sausage and peppers and roasted veggies. My wife ordered a chicken parm grinder, which was good, except for the fact that the cheese was not fully melted. I can't award more than 4 Stars when that happens, but I will give Kensington Market Four Stars since everything was good.

Needed dinner in a pinch and I remembered going here a while back to get some steaks. I was right down the street and figured I'd stop in and see what they had to offer. I was really impressed with all the prepared food that was available. All kinds of salads and Italian staples. I went with eggplant rollitini, potatoes, and roasted zucchini also a small container of potato salad. Everything was excellent, very well prepared and tasted great. Prices were very good compared to another deli I frequent occasionally. The also have a nice meat section and frozen raviolis etc. The staff were super friendly and helpful. What a wonderful little market!

I came here to try their grinders... and almost had to abort my mission once I walked in and saw the deli cases chock full of hot and cold dishes. There was the usual stuff like lasagna, cutlets, pasta salads, etc., but also several things I couldn't even put a name to. I was so sorely tempted, but I stayed on task. I ordered ham, Genoa, capicola, provolone, lettuce, tomato, oil and vinegar, and salt and pepper. The vinegar was balsamic, and for the capicola, they asked me "hot or sweet"? This was the first time I'd ever been asked that. I'm not sure I even knew that sweet capicola existed. I opted for hot. There was a hefty but not overwhelming amount of meat. I was slightly disappointed that there seemed to be a little more ham than salami or capicola. The bread was obviously baked in the store - soft, chewy, fresh, delicious. The balsamic wasn't too noticeable, but I think that was my fault for blocking it with lettuce and tomato; I should have gotten roasted peppers instead. Lesson learned! Fortunately, the coldcuts had more than enough flavor to stand on their own. This was the first store outside the New Haven area that I'd seen carrying Foxon Park soda, so I picked up a gassosa. Equally remarkable to me was the fact that they had Martin Rosol's smoked kielbasa. I had thought you could only get that at, well, Martin Rosol's. And this was just a casual glance through their cases. I wonder what I missed. Overall, I'd give the Kensington Market a solid recommendation based on the grinder alone, and from what I saw of the offerings inside their deli cases, I think another visit or two might turn that recommendation into a zealous endorsement (and bump up my Yelp rating to a full 5 stars). That stuff looked really, really good.

    A HUGE eggplant grinder - $8.50.

Our waitress was absolutely amazing. She was kind, attentive, and whenever something was forgotten, she immediately went to speak with the kitchen and tried to make it right. That being said, our table definitely seemed to fall into a bit of a communication dead zone. My chicken parm was forgotten, and while waiting for it the rest of my family's food got cold. They ended up sending their pasta back to be reheated, which also took a while. Our drinks were forgotten at one point as well, and our to go dessert sat waiting for a long time before anyone brought it over. The food itself was great and we still enjoyed celebrating together, but overall the experience would have been much smoother with better communication between the kitchen and staff. Drinks stayed filled, and the waiter came by to make sure we didn't want any refills on any alcoholic beverages as they were being consumed. He recommended a few appetizers for the table. We got to try the chef special, garlic bread with ricotta, and calamari. All very good. As was the bread and oil that I think comes with every meal. After I heard the specials, I went with the short rib gnocchi, but the salmon with spaghetti squash was a close second. I wasn't disappointed in my dish. It was a really good size and I ended up taking half of it back with me, something tells me it's gonna be even better the next day as most Italian food is. My one regret is that I didn't order the lemon cheesecake to go. All of the desserts sounded amazing, especially the hazelnut tart, however, the lemon cheesecake is super cute and I heard from other people that have been to this restaurant before that it is delicious. Maybe next time!

Felt like you were dining at your Italian families. It's in the basement and loved how it was decorated! When you see the Sopranos.. you already know! But, many dishes were ordered and passed such as Salad, fresh bread, Antipasto, pasta, calamari, Broccoli Rabe, eggplant parm, Chicken Parm, fish, potatoes! I might be missing something! There's really no gluten free options labeled on the menu but they do have gluten pasta, and other options they can suggest as such as fish or chicken. I ordered a separate the Gemelli Cantina GF pasta dish (Chicken, spinach, sautéed with fresh garlic and olive oil). Very tasty! And all portions were huge! I ordered a large half pepperoni and green peppers and half cheese by phone. They told me 20-25 minutes on the phone. The Central Pizza crew was nice on the phone and in person and they finished the pizza on time, even though they seemed very busy. I liked some parts of the pizza a lot, and connected less well with some parts. The well melted cheese and fresh green peppers were highlights. The pepperoni was pretty good, but didn't stand out relative to some places. Sauce is a highly personal choice. I prefer a slightly sweeter sauce and this leaned towards tangy. The spice level was nice though. I'm not married to any particular crust style. Central makes a Greek style crust. This was not one of my favorite executions of a Greek crust. The outer rounded crust was very crispy. Almost saltine cracker crispy. The undercarriage was not as crispy, but I like the texture at some other area places better. I'm not sure Central will take the place of any pizzerias in my local takeout rotation. But if I went to someone's house and they served Central, I would not be disappointed. 3.5 Stars
