After being closed for about 7-8 years, Maple Giant Grinder has reopened in the Hartford South End with the OG family running it, as opposed to the people running it at the time it closed. I was an MGG guy back in the day. Very good sandwiches. Good other options. Friendly service, but a multi-year closure warrants a fresh look. For starters, the renovated space is way nicer than I remember. Lots of wood. Modern feel. You're going to be impressed if you were an old customer. Service was very good and attentive. You feel a pride in the re-opening and the fact that the OG family is there means everything. I ordered an 8 inch Italian combo and a re-heated slice of pepperoni pizza. The slice was good. It's hard for a re-heated slice to really stand out though. They have a gorgeous brand new pizza oven and pizza menu btw. My Italian Combo was just like I remembered. Fresh cut ham and salami. Lots of veggie toppings like lettuce, tomato and hot peppers. Mayo. Salt and pepper. Oil and vinegar. Fresh bread. Very Good stuff. MGG is back! Had business in Hartford Saturday morning and I figured I get lunch after. After doing a little research Maple Giant Grinder & Pizza seemed like a good idea. I wasn't wrong! I walked in around 11:30am and I was the only customer there. The owner Frank I believe his name was greeted me right away. I appreciated his high positive energy. Very pleasant to deal with. I was in the mood for a chicken parm grinder so I ordered a toasted half and some fries. The have a real nice large, well lit open and airy dining area if you want to eat there which I did. The fries came out first, piping hot and very tasty. Then the chicken parm grinder. I love to eat and a half is more than enough for me! Real good grinder all the way around......the sauce, peppers, cheese and of course the breaded chicken was awesome. Several folks came in to pick up to go orders, other than that I had the place to myself. After finishing up I was super full and Frank happily took my dishes from me. Can't ask for much more than that for a great experience. I'm happy I chose Maple Giant Grinder & Pizza. I'll definitely be back to try something else. Saw them on tic tok and finally pulled the trigger yo try them !! Ordered a med pizza half cheese half pepperoni and an order of chicken wings mild , well done. Well the pizza was surprisingly thin almost like a bar pie it was tasty and seemed to have quality toppings but the dough was super dry almost to the point of being a cracker (if you like such pies u will be happy)! As far as the wings they are small like I like the sauce was really good and the blue cheese dressing was decent but you could tell it wasn't quality chicken even though I ordered them crispy you just know it's not quality when the meat becomes the texture of dry wood pulp ! So all in all the meal was ok I'll have to try the grinders before I count them out read more

Just awful. Here's a tip. If someone orders something you don't have, or if you run out of something. You don't just tell them "OK" then substitute the item without telling them! We ordered a pizza with hamburger. Apparently they don't have hamburger, so instead of telling us they just put on meatballs instead. We also ordered black olives which apparently they also do not have, so they out on whole greek olives, once again which we did not order. So literally a completely different pizza than we ordered. We had to throw it away. Ordered a greek salad that was supposed to have romaine and it was made with iceburg, they added cucumbers and green peppers which were not supposed to be in the salad. The value here is extraordinary. Half grinders run 7 or 8 bucks, and if you eat the entire thing you will be stuffed for the rest of the day. And how about getting a slice of pizza for just $1.50? If you're a big spender and want to spring for pepperoni, it will set you back $1.75 -not $1.75 extra, just $1.75 for the whole slice. The aptly named Maple Giant Grinder is a grinder -pizza - pasta place with very good food at rock bottom prices. For lunch today, we ordered a half meatball grinder, a half turkey grinder ($7.25 each) and an antipasto $8.75. My turkey grinder was excellent- a perfectly toasted nice soft roll, a big portion of fresh turkey, with lettuce, tomato, and melted provolone with a splash of oil and vinegar. Our salad was just as good- a huge cylinder of ham, cheese, turkey, pepperoni, and salami served over crisp fresh spring mix with tomatoes, onions and olives. I sampled a taste of the meatball and sauce, and they were fabulous! The only thing that was "off" was that a meatball grinder wasn't our first choice -chicken parm was. But they didn't have any chicken parm at 12:30 on a Saturday! The "half" grinders were so large we took half of the halves home, so we basically got 4 portions for about three and a half bucks each. Probably the best grinders in the South End. No bad choices on the menu here. Try the beef cutlet -- something you'll only find at old school Italian places like this one -- or the stuffed peppers with sauce. Don't be fooled by the "half" grinder which sounds small. Say you're in Hartford and you want a good grinder. You have Franklin Ave Giant Grinder, and you have Maple Giant. While they each have their fans and detractors (similar to the debate over New Haven pizza places), there is not enough of a difference in my mind to give either an edge. Maple has exactly what you would expect from a good Italian deli. There are a variety of grinder options, both hot and cold, with the usual offerings (chicken cutlet, eggplant, cold cuts, etc). A half sub is enough for lunch, and a full sub is a perfect size to be split between two people. The ingredients are fresh, and the tomato sauce has a great flavor to it. Price-wise, I believe it is slightly less expensive than Franklin (a dollar or two). There is a parking area with limited spaces. The service is always friendly and efficient. read more

I was used to coworkers bringing group orders of Maple into the office, but now I live in Hartford and have time to patronize the actual establishment - and I'm glad I did. It's an utterly pleasant and welcoming place, with some of the friendliest staff I've found anywhere. It was a warm day, and there was no air-conditioning, but they had both doors open and the warm breeze blowing through just added to the feel. The meatball and sausage combo was as excellent as ever; as you would expect from anyplace with "Giant Grinder" in the name, the filling is generous, and the different textures and seasonings of the two meats work very well together. I told the clerk it was fantastic, who then communicated that to the older fellow in the back making the sandwiches. Best grinders in Hartford! Portions are HUGE and prices are very reasonable. You could buy a half grinder and eat half for lunch and save half for dinner. A whole is definitely enough for two people to share. The eggplant parm grinders here are delicious as well as the ham. They also have a variety of hot foods to choose from. Been coming in for lunch all week because my crew has been working next door. From day one this week the customer service has been terrible. Today I asked for my Stromboli to be heated up more because it was cold in the middle still. I was given an attitude over it, which in my eyes was uncalled for. It shouldn't be a problem.
