Lots of Pittsburgh sports Pro and amateur) pictures are posted on the walls that provide that hometown feel. Service - the minute you enter the restaurant you are made to feel welcome and appreciated. The owners roam the room looking to help the servers with anything needed. Food - I ordered a ham and cheese omelet with fried potatoes and an English Muffin. The food was served hot and the English Muffin was toasted exactly as requested (which seldom happens). The omelet was large and tasted very good. Overall - if only I lived in the area, as I would be a regular customer. The restaurant tics all of the boxes for what you would want in a restaurant.

The food was fresh, made to order and the prices were what you might have found 10-15 years ago. The place is popular. It can be crowded so you may have to wait short minute. Locals say it's this way most of the time. Don't let that put you off. It has that hometown Pittsburgh feel with friendly, quick service. The coffee fresh, hot and never ending. I had the basic 2 eggs over easy, crispy bacon, home fries and thick Italian bread. Everything with the exception of the potatoes were perfect.

Downey's House provided the local spot I needed. An ice cold Yuengling on draft went down very well, and while I didn't find pierogis on the menu, I settled for a phenomenal bowl of spaghetti & meatballs. Local marinara & meatballs made with the same recipe of the old Main Hotel that was in Carnegie for nearly 100 years. That bowl of pasta was SCRUMPTIOUS and just what I was after. I even talked my lovely wife into doing up her salad 'Pittsburgh style', which means adorning the salad with fries. And yes, it's as good as it sounds. Thrown in a protein like grilled chicken and that is a banger of a meal. Great dining area with a square-shaped bar and TVs with sight-lines in any direction. The service is friendly and helpful, and prices are probably lower than at some chain-y eatery that just makes your food via assembly line. It's local and sensational!

They also have a big menu for drinks at a pretty reasonable price. I was surprised about how many people were there for an early dinner on a Thursday, must be a popular local spot! We had the smashed fingerling potatoes, it was pretty delicious and I liked the ranch that came with it. There was a lot of toppings on top too! For my main, I got the seafood risotto. It had shrimps and bay scallops. It had a generous amount of seafood in it. By then I was full but they had good sounding desert, including a GF Bundt cake! I wish I had saved some space for it. For my drinks, I had one of their speciality mules: Maggie's mule. It was kind of too sweet for me.

And served piping hot and stayed hot (how do they do that?). Drinks: good but nothing special. Great selection of local tap beers, local spirits left a lot to be desired. Two vodka options and neither are worth drinking. I didn't bother looking at whiskey as PA doesn't have any worth anything. Service: absolutely terrible. Sat for 15 minutes with no attention. Finally had to flag down the host and it still took another 5 minutes. Complete amateur servers. Never checked back after meals served and server spent all her time socializing with other employees at the entrance. No management on site it appears - it shows!

After driving 40 minutes to the restaurant, we were turned away at the door due to a "no children under 13" policy. We were told we should have known because the policy is on their website, despite having explicitly mentioned the infant during the confirmation call. We turned around and drove 40 minutes back into the city, where we found another restaurant and had a lovely dinner. Here's the offending 4-month-old, silently smiling his way through his first dinner with his new grandparents.

It may surprise some to know how many times I've hung out in Pittsburgh in the last 16 years or so,…read morebecause I've never been to a Primanti Bros. before. But then again, I am vegetarian, so I didn't think they offered anything for me. I've looked at the menu online more than once, and didn't see any sandwiches designated vegetarian each time. But I was meeting a friend before a concert on the RMU campus, and this was conveniently located 1 mile away, and it had food and beer. I kept an open mind and figured, I'll just modify one of their sandwiches. When I arrived, I learned they also have a pizza option. But I still thought... when in Rome... There was a black bean option listed on their wall menu, but the waitress double-checked for me and we learned together that they use to offer that option, but no longer do. Damn. There was however a cheese (no meat) option on the menu, which I was surprised wasn't on the online menu. But I'll take it! Their sandwiches are interesting in that instead of sides of french fries and cole slaw, the sides are just stacked into the sandwich to make it a quick easy convenient meal! The draft beer selection was good, the sandwich was decent enough, and the service was great (weekday evening). In the end, I am not sure I'd run back for my one sandwich menu option, maybe I'd try their pizza, or go for some sides, or just stop in for a beer on my way to my next show. I enjoyed the vibe and most everthing about the place, but the sandwich was just okay.

It took 20 minutes to get our drinks - two beers and one mixed drink (simply Tito's). My husband ended up ordering a second beer and it took about 15 minutes for that one. We got the fried pickle chips as an appetizer. Could have been crispier but weren't the worst. He got the salmon as his entree, I got the crab cakes. The rice that came on the side was very dry. The crab and salmon were good, and so were the sweet carrots. We also ordered their special brown butter cake as the waitress said it was very good. It was delicious and helped save this review. The inside was soft and the outside had a sweet and sugary crust. It was topped with vanilla ice cream and caramel. Very rich and delicious! This place might be great if you're just going to sit at the bar, although it's hard to tell.
