Nuggets we eat um with rice and Kimchee

It makes me happy to post this review. I'm a 70's baby. My youth was filled with picnics to Kailua beach with homemade musubi and KFC for lunch. I haven't enjoyed their chicken for the past 25 years as it seems to have been in decline for flavor, quality and a different recipe. Fast forward to this weekend, with the new building, and what looks like new staff, the chicken was ono! Still not the old recipe. I think, but ono for what it is now. The nuggets are winnahs!!!

Beyond Fried Chicken... What is it? My friends, Joyce in Arizona and Donna in Kailua, posted photos of this new plant based food option at Kentucky Fried Chicken. It looked interesting. Joyce noted that the square shaped pieces could have been thought out better from a marketing point of view. Donna said that the taste was quite good and that her mom even enjoyed them after the leftovers were heated up. Well... You can ask and wonder all you want. There's no substitute for trying it yourself, right? So, I decided to go to Donna's hometown of Kailua. It might be closer to me than Kalihi and possibly less traffic. Both places have free parking. The location in Kalihi might be crowded due to the proximity of schools. Kailua was a good choice. There was only one car ahead of me in the drive-through. The dining room is closed because of the pandemic. The parking lot was like a ghost town. The speaker system for ordering was broken, so, everyone orders at the window. I had ordered online, hoping for some kind of perk. I made an account and was offered a free chicken sandwich with a minimum $12 purchase - yay! I couldn't find Beyond Fried Chicken on the app, so, I ordered a chicken pot pie, mashed potatoes and Gravy, corn, biscuit, and a thigh (for comparison). When I got to the window, I ordered the Beyond Fried Chicken (six pieces for $8.99) and I asked for my online order. They didn't have it. I told them that I had paid already, so, the nice gal who called me "auntie", wrote down my order and efficiently gathered all of my items! She was pleasant and cheerful! I quickly drove home because the fragrance was torturing me. I guess I was rather famished... I took photos and dove in... Verdict: Beyond Fried Chicken - not bad! I ate the first piece without dipping sauce. The texture was firm enough to pass as chicken. The light batter on the outside provided enough crunch and flavor to make it a pretty good experience! I tried the barbecue sauce next...it was on the sweet side. I liked it! The ranch sauce... Not so much. Free Chicken Sandwich - yummy! The bread was nice and soft! The Mayo made it decadent. The pickles added some kick! The chicken was tender and flavorful! Pot Pie - I gobbled it up! It reminded me of when I was a little kid and our parents left us with babysitters when they went out... And they went out a lot - because they were so popular! Mom would let us choose either a TV dinner or Swanson's chicken/beef pot pie. Haha! Anyway - this chicken pot pie had chunks of real shredded chicken. The crust was nice and flaky! Delicious! The mashed potatoes and Gravy, corn, and biscuit (with buttery spread - like melted butter in a package) were normal comfort food basics. Nom nom nom! I couldn't get myself to eat the chicken thigh. The bones, veins, and knuckles are deterrents! LOL! I really don't like touching my food unless I have gloves on! Haha! So, there you have it! Those are my thoughts on Beyond Fried Chicken... And more! Let me know what you think! Go try it!

KJ's located on Kaneohe side in Windward City shopping center, next to Genki Sushi and shaka shaka tea. Man, I didn't take no pictures, but inside looks kinda washed up. They could use some upgrades for their dine in. Reading other reviews, there was a lot of mixed reactions, so I was scared, but I gave em a chance trusting @onlyfoods808 review. On Yelp had some good reviews and bad reviews about the furikake chicken. At the counter, the girl was nice and patient. Wife wanted to order the stuffed cabbage but was out. So ended up ordering her furikake chicken and crisp Thai. I got the furikake chicken and garlic chicken combo. Got to cop one of their banana breads, and a large soda. Was thirsty. Good price. All in all came out to $40. They have this little snack area off to the side of the cashier where the banana bread was, but was pretty much empty. Drove home to nalo to eat. Couldn't wait. I must say, their garlic chicken was good. I liked the garlic chicken better than the furikake chicken. To me, the chicken was not dry. Was tender and the garlic chicken had a nice sweet flavor. All was good. Wife enjoyed her food too. The crisp Thai was almost like the garlic chicken mixed with sweet chili sauce to add a little spice to it. That was good too. Man for some reason the Pepsi was good too lol could've been that I was just thirsty but I'm so glad didn't taste dirty. U get some places where the soda get one funky taste, like dirty, like they neva clean the stuffs for a while or somethin lol I learned that from the wife lol ... sometimes, soda can taste dirty lol glad theirs wasn't. Anyway, would we come back? Yes, 10/10 recommend. Go check em out.

They actually cut in half 5 pieces of the Chicken Backs and each 1/2 counted as a piece of overcooked chicken jerky! I also got a 1/3 of a breast section with bones and not even a 1/2 of a thigh. That totals my 10 pieces. More bones and excess crispy flour then consumable meat. NOBODY gives a Chicken back (or 1/2 a back)! Not Popeyes, not KFC or Zippy's who will remain my Favorite because I will only get ripped off the 1st time, never again. Additionally, they make you buy the sauce, the reason is due to no seasoning on the over floured bread...but it IS Crispy! The Chicken tenders were overcooked and REALLY Chewy around the edges. Just a LOT of breaded Crispy with no flavor, what "Chef" doesn't even use salt? Really, if you're going to risk testing this food, PAY for some sauce! I hope the Owner reads this and realizes that ripping people off by selling broken pieces that most Chef's throw away because they have so little meat on them, isn't going to keep him in business. The profit margin may be up while folks are trying it, spending their hard earn $$$'s, yet not coming back will be the ultimate demise of this business as many other have come and gone doing the exact same thing, not putting themselves in he patron's position. Ask yourself this: When was the last time you saw a bowl of whole chicken pieces and immediately grabbed one that was back bone chopped in half?

Be sure to call ahead, it usually takes ~30 min per order if you call. Takeout only. Service is very polite. Parking is tough because of the area but there are a few spots out front, would generally recommend calling ahead so parking is less stressful. Their menu was a little confusing to me so here is some explanation: K pop chicken- boneless chicken pieces K chicken wings- flats and drumettes (the two parts of a larger chicken wing) K chicken tenders- boneless tenders only K crispy chicken- full wings, thighs, and breast pieces They offer each of these items as a plate lunch too, with a smaller portion of chicken that comes with rice and salad. I personally like the K chicken wings for the variety and higher meat to skin ratio but my husband really likes the K chicken wings. The skin is shatteringly crispy and flavorful and the meat is juicy. Their honey shoyu sauce is the perfect balance of sweet and salty. You can also request the sauce on the side. I've also had the fried rice which was decent and generously portioned. We once had a complimentary house salad given to us which was unexpected kindness. Overall they do a great job serving up a delicious craveable food that keeps us coming back!

Both experiences were absolute culinary delights. It has been a long time since we've discovered another true destination restaurant in Hawaii, one that stands alongside favorites like Fête and a very select few others on the islands. In fact, Faria would fit seamlessly into the dining scenes of our favorite places--Greenpoint, Williamsburg, Tribeca, Soho, Paris--or even right at home. What sets Faria apart and places it in such elite company comes down to several things, all equally important. From the moment you walk in until the moment you leave, the genuine aloha spirit defines the experience. The floor staff move with an effortless grace, almost like a choreographed dance, and their knowledge of each dish feels as though they've cooked them themselves. The ambiance transports you directly to a charming Portuguese fishing village--warm, immaculate, and inviting. The owners, too, embody genuine hospitality: present but never overbearing, driven simply by their love for what they do. While we are not experts on Portuguese cuisine, we were instantly captivated by the depth and complexity of flavors layered throughout each dish. As wine educators and consultants, we especially appreciated the thoughtful wine selections, each pairing beautifully with the food. Our experience concluded perfectly with a memorable taste of a stunning Port wine. Over the course of our two visits, we enjoyed: * Bolinhos de Bacalhau // Cod + Potato Croquettes with lemon and herb mayo * Linguiça Assada // House linguica, served sizzling over a flame * Portuguese Bean Soup // A hearty blend of cabbage, sausage, smoked ham, and white beans * Granny Pereira's Piripiri Chicken // Whole roasted chicken leg with piripiri spice rub, lemon potatoes, and braised cabbage * Vinha D'alhos (Garlic Pork) // Braised pork with garlic, white wine, braised cabbage, and pão da lareira Each dish was prepared with obvious passion, precision, and respect for tradition, while still feeling vibrant and fresh. Faria is not just another new restaurant in Kailua--it's a rare gem and a true destination in its own right. We can't wait to return. 9/17/2025 RETURNED Couldn't wait to return. Asked for the same table, no problem. Same amazing greeting as if we are family. The service should be cloned and sold to the. Highest bidder. We were tempted to order the same items but decided to do a 180 degree and we ordered three totally different dishes. Each one was as good or better than our last visit. Check out the photos. I was told that not all their dishes were stellar and now that I've experienced this I can attest to such. Really had a hankering for shrimp & chose the Mozambique although I was forewarned it was spicy and others have sent it back. I suggested if they would adjust the amount of sauce in the dish. Nope not possible as this is how the dishes are prepared & each dish tells a story. Ok, I should have asked to hear the story. But we know anything is possible and my request was not ridiculous.... I do enjoy spicy but honestly the peri peri sauce overpowers the excellently cooked shrimp & couscous. Unfortunately I could not finish it. Since it was my birthday I should have something I'm throughly enjoying. It was taken back and replaced with the peri peri chicken. Now the funniest thing is I am familiar with peri peri sauce. Expected more from this chicken dish but it really was too mild. I didn't mind that it wasn't super succulent but it lacked in flavor. However the cabbage and potatoes that accompanied it were lovely. I still like this restaurant overall in spite of a mildly disappointing experience. I also would have appreciated if they did not charge me $34 for the dish I could not finish on my bd. Honestly, Goen would never do that. It's very rare every dish in a restaurant is excellent. So you just need to know what to order. FYI, they must have the best wings in town!

I noticed a while ago that they introduced one called firecracker karaage chicken, so that was what I ordered for lunch. I typically use the app for speed and convenience. Just a few clicks, and I was on my way. They usually send a text message when the order is ready, but I didn't get one so I just drove up to the drive-thru, rand the buzzer, and "wallah", my order was ready. The taste and texture wasn't bad, but it wasn't what I would consider karaage, or "firecracker", either. The description in the app said "boneless fried chicken mixed with housemade sauce... topped with spicy mayo sauce". Well, I'll admit, that describes it, but it's just not karaage, and the sauce wasn't that spicy. It tasted like their Korean fried chicken topped with buffalo sauce mixed with mayo. I was expecting the chicken to be "lighter", since traditional karaage doesn't use a batter, and perhaps more of a Sriracha style spicy sauce. Like I said, not bad, just not spicy karaage. The service is always fast and the food and value is good, so I'll keep trying anything new... and hoping.
