Lunch in Kaneohe, O'ahu, Hawai'i... Using my Yelp app to find a new lunch place, my phone brought me to" Poor Man's Huli Huli Chicken Isn't the name intriguing? I had to check it out... LOCATION: next to the Hygenic Store where Kamehameha Highway meets Kahekili Highway. There's another food truck next to this white one. Look for the white truck with the rotisserie set-up! PARKING: free - I used the gravel parking lot SERVICE: humble, patient, and efficient. This guy does everything: cooking, chopping, plating, and collecting the cash. No cards, please. I admire the fact that he said that it would take a while because the chicken wasn't quite ready yet. He waited for the chicken to be "just right"! ENVIRONMENT: if you like outdoor dining, you'll enjoy the scenery. The ocean is across the street! There was a slight breeze and the shade under the trees made the humidity feel better. Personally, I dislike the traffic passing by, the feral roosters and hens, and the flies. That's why I prefer to take my food to Windward Mall (where it's air conditioned) or home. If you dine there, tables and chairs are available! FOOD: the chicken was BOMB! It was like my dad's, but maybe better because of the crispy skin and the savory flavor! It didn't have burnt skin like my dad's hulihuli chicken and that's a good thing! The meat was tender and moist! The long grain rice wasn't sticky (meh) and the corn was good! For $20 cash, the drive is worth it. Passing through Ahuimanu, you can visit The Valley of the Temples, Byodo-In Temple, and the McDonald's with a gorgeous setting. The greenery and natural landscaping is unique... just like this local small business... Support and enjoy!

How can a person resist a perfectly bbq chicken hulihuli style. Love finding these treasures while driving around our beautiful island, or in this case cruising on Instagram! After seeing the post on IG made a drive out to this wagon. Instantly recognized the cook known as John Wayne. Boy was he cooking up a storm..! And the scents coming off of the grill... pure bliss! Chicken perfectly seasoned and still moist. Price is crazy reasonable. For just $20 one gets 3 quarters of a chicken, rice and corn. If you don't want the sides you can opt for four pieces of chicken instead. Be sure to bring cash. No cards accepted here. While driving down Kamehameha Highway be sure to look for the bright blue sign or white truck... or just follow your nose. Truck located just past the hygienic store between Kaneohe and Kahalu'u!

We walked up ordered and sat at the tables. Our wait wasn't long and he was so friendly. The chicken was so AMAZING! The skin had amazing flavor and it was juicy! Soon after we got our food people started pulling up too... next time we're in town we will be back!!!

Seasoned amaaaazing, chicken was SO juicy and tender genuinely some of the best chicken i've ever had I didn't even need to use any of the sauces they had out. Rice was cooked nicely corn was canned. Service was meh they didn't even speak to me or acknowledge me until their son came out and took my order and made it. Granted it was 6pm end of the day so they were probably just tired.

The owner of this spot was so kind and gave us yummy free drinks along with our delicious dinner! Highly recommend.

Flies everywhere, food took forever to make. Also paid cash and none of the workers changed their gloves.

At $18 a plate, you can't beat the value for Hawaii. While it's cash only, you can also pay Venmo. There's picnic table seating near the food trucks, or you can sit by the Ahuimanu stream inlet and watch the chickens run around. What a gem - my son said this was one of his favorite meals during our visit from California.

It was a rainy, overcast day, and the unpaved parking lot was muddy and wet. There was a tarped area with picnic tables and benches, but we didn't want to stay and eat because of the flies. I think there would be feral chickens if it wasn't raining. We both ordered Steak Fried Rice ($18 cash only) from the cheerful, helpful man. The food came out really hot in the takeout container. Luckily, I had a towel so that my niece could hold our meals on her lap in the car without getting burned. The fragrance of the food was delicious! It was torture driving to Windward Mall! We couldn't wait to find a table in air conditioning and sit down! We both dove into our containers. Everything looked good and had yummy flavor. Too bad the steak was a bit chewy from the gristle. Maybe next time, we should share a crab fried rice for $29?
