When we walked into Khaki, the ambience was great and the restaurant had a nice vibe. Unfortunately, the experience went downhill after we were seated. We were placed in an odd spot where I constantly had to adjust my chair so people could get by behind me, which made the meal uncomfortable. We ordered the Parsi Chicken Kheema, Handi Mutton, and garlic naan. The mutton was flavorful and easily the best part of the meal, but everything else was pretty subpar. Our server was very kind and professional, but he never checked on us after the food arrived, and it seemed like the restaurant was understaffed. We were at the Khaki to celebrate a friend's birthday. It was a great evening and we enjoyed the food here. Everything we tried was delicious, even the chutnies with Papad platter were good. Jackfruit cutlets, Paneer Pineheels were my most favorite from the evening. Gobhi Musallam was good too. I tried saffron lemon drop and it was okay. I couldn't get any saffron other than the color. Server explained that it's saffron infused vodka but it didn't come through. Overall drinks were okay, not as good as the food for sure. Khaki offers a refined take on Indian cuisine with a diverse menu of creative dishes from all over the subcontinent. Given the range of the menu, this is a restaurant worth multiple visits! We were started with a complimentary appetizer of cocktail samosas, crunchy turnovers with a filling of spiced peas and potatoes, topped with a drizzle of tamarind chutney. For our mains, the Achari Gobi Musallam was a head of charred cauliflower marinated with achari (Indian pickle) spices and served over a tomato-based sauce; and the Champaran Handi Mutton was a delicious stew of tender, meaty chunks of baby goat and whole garlic cloves in an intensely-spiced onion gravy, which had been slow-cooked in a clay handi. The Meen Pollichathu was a whole, bone-in branzino stuffed with masala and cooked in a banana leaf, served with coconut rice and a coconut-kokum-tomato relish on the side. While the South Indian flavors were delicious, the fish itself was small and boney and not worth the price. But my favorite dish of all was the Paneer Pinwheel, made of a sheet of paneer rolled with spiced dried fruits and nuts. The pinwheel was cooked in a tandoor (giving it a caramelized exterior), sliced, and served over a delectable, creamy tomato gravy (similar to butter chicken sauce). The nutty, caramelized paneer pinwheel and tomato sauce went perfectly with the flatbreads we ordered, including Tandoori Roti and a flaky, layered Laccha Paratha. Had such a great experience at Khaki in San Ramon. Bright modern ecclectic space with a few intimate benches and booths. Khaki hits different as an Indian joint with a noteably distinctive vibe. Seating is flexible to accommpdate larger groups as well. We were greeted with complimentary Amuse-Bouche Mini Samosas by the chef - nice welcome! The service was impeccable, highly attentive and thoughtful throughout our meal. Although not a white tablecloth venue our server elegantly scraped the crumbs and smudges off the table at the end of our main course - nice touch. We were pleasantly surprised by the bright flavors and the portions of each of our dishes: Malai Mushroom Chicken Noorani Kabob Parsi Chicken Keema Butter Chicjen Chili Cheese Naan The Butter Chicken in particular was a true standout with the wonderfully savory char flavors of the chicken in the abundantly portioned and decadent sauce. This is our 4th time going there but unfortunately this time was not up to par. Food tasted bad and cold. Our chilli rotis were chewy and tough. Service was also not good. Although I don't think I want blame our server ( Jacob d) he was doing what any server would do but we didn't get enough spoons to eat with once asked and we just ended using what came with our dish. No biggie on that part I would say. But I didn't enjoy it at all this time around. Food came cold which I am not big fan at all. Don't think I will go back again anytime soon. We ordered biryani and rice used was small kichadi rice or once used for dosas making. Not sure if it's different recipe but that was also cold and not good at all. The ambience and service was amazing and even though we had 30+ min wait (they prefer reservation) , it was really worth the wait. We had the non veg starter - pallipalayam chicken and this was very well cooked with nice spices and flavor to this. Made a reservation in advance. The inside is pretty nice and there is bar seating as well. Some of the tables are right near the window and it can get a tiny bit warm if there is direct sun (although there are shades on the windows). Service was good and attentive. The menu we received in person had less items than the menu online on their website - not sure why. We started off with two starters: Sweet potato - nice fresh starter that had a nice crunch due to the fried spinach and kale. The sweet and sour taste meshed well. I wish there were more pieces of sweet potato as there were maybe 4-5 chunks at the bottom. Malai mushrooms - nice chew to the mushroom that made it seem like meat. Good umami and a good amount of sauce. Main courses: butter chicken - there was a good amount of chicken in this dish. They were all very soft as well. The chicken went well with the garlic naan, which is on the thinner side but are still crispy and slightly chewy. There was a good amount of garlic on it. Beef sukka - has a bit of a kick! I think this would pair better with rice instead of naan. The beef is really tender and spiced fairly well. We opted for the crème brûlée for dessert, which was very good. It didn't have an overly caramelized top, which I actually prefer. The inside contains gulab jamun, which I've never had before. It made the dish more spongy instead of overly creamy. All in all, a good restaurant that I wouldn't mind returning to and trying some of the other dishes. read more

Please make a reservation before coming here and note they open at 5pm, NOT 4pm! So, we visited Khaki today for an early dinner. The hours here on Yelp show opening at 4pm however when we got here at 4:15 pm we were told by the manager there that they actually open at 5pm. So we walked around in the shopping center and came back at 5pm when we were told by the same person that they need 5 more mins to open. We were fine with that and waited patiently outside. At 5:05pm he comes to us and says they're ready to open now and asked if we have a reservation. We didn't have a reservation but we were taken aback that he hadn't mentioned anything about making a reservation when he spoke to us 4:15pm or 5pm. Anyway, he said he may be able to give us a table but he would need to check and get back to us in a couple of minutes because they get completely booked out since it's their second day since opening. Thankfully he comes back saying he could seat us four. Phew! Our server was friendly, courteous and very attentive. Ambience was good. It was quiet, no one was around besides another couple. It remained slow for the next hour or so. Drinks menu looks unique and they have a full bar with bar seating. Food was presented well. Everything we tried here tasted good without being excellent so to say. We had a bunch of appetizers- Ragda pani puri, sweet potato patta chaat, jackfruit cutlets, Chicken Kheema that came with two dinner rolls, Tandoori Malai Mushrooms and the BBQ pork ribs. They had two desserts on their menu- Rasmalai Mango Tiramisu and Gulab Jamun Creme Brulee, both sounded unique. We decided to try the Gulab Jamun Creme Brulee which was delicious! Creamy vanilla custard with Gulab Jamun pieces topped with crunchy caramelized sugar. The kids in our party really enjoyed it. All in all, this place is on the price side. The menu is small, but the dinner and dining experience were fantastic. I ordered the prawn moilee with rice. The rice was super fragrant and the prawns were perfectly cooked. The coconut broth was creamy but felt surprisingly light to eat. Our waitress was super sweet and made sure to let us know about any possible dishes that might be best for the unique dietary needs in our party. The decor is fresh, clean and modern. Be careful when sliding in and out from the table though - the benches move easily and I was definitely not graceful when I tried to get up from the table. I would definitely return. read more

Spinach patta chaat was very soggy, jackfruit cutlets lacked any flavor and were oily, paneer pinwheel was good, kofta was again oily with extra sweet sauce. They gave complementary samosas which were good. Gulab jamun creme brûlée was alright, too thick toffee layer on top which was sticking to the teeth in a not so enjoyable way- creme brulees should have thin and crunchy toffee layer. Great if it works, but it seemed like with everybody being responsible, no one actually was. Our food sat on the counter for quite a bit. And no, it wasn't crowded. We got everything warmish at best. My friend got a refill on her water just as we were leaving. Still, drinks? Refreshing and original. Each one I saw looked interesting. My sick guava punch has a nice edge. Amuse? Mini samosas. Unexpected and good. Appetizers and sides? Good. Try the Passionfruit pain puri. It's good and fun to eat. Main dish? Creative and flavorful. Balance of vegetarian and non-vegetarian? Good. We ended our main course with mangalorean beef sukka. This place has food from various areas of India and they seem to be adding their own flair to the traditional dishes. Def a lot of creativity but not necessarily hitting the mark with flavour. While some dishes were unique, the inflated price points seem to offset the value here. The naan was typical/mediocre, smaller than normal tho. The Biryani rice was basically tiny broken pieces of rice with mounds of unseasoned broccoli and carrots. It lacked the flavour profile I was expecting for a $30 small pot dish. The server was very friendly and helpful with the suggestions. It was loud, as expected for a Saturday night but not terrible. The drinks were interesting, def worth trying. We dined here for the Diwali Fix Prix Menu. Upon being seated we were brought our regular menus. I would assume they would inform the guests or place the special menu along with the regular menu. Luckily I had seen on social media that they had a special menu and requested that menu. We ordered our drinks and our food. Appetizers came out fairly quickly and we were impressed with the quality and taste of the chicken and shrimp. Now there were about 5 other tables that had been seated and food was ordered. The kitchen seemed to be overwhelmed along with the waiters. Food going to wrong tables and long wait. 80% of the restaurant was empty so I don't know how they would handle a full house. We waited for 1.5 hours for our main course to come out after the appetizers! At this point our baby lost his patience and we had to ask for the dinner to be packed up. During this time no chai was offered even though it was a part of the fix prixe menu. We asked for the dessert to be packed to go as well and the waiter handed us a menu and was confused when we asked if it was not included because the menu we ordered from states dessert was included. She asked us to wait at the bar in the meantime. This itself was a delight! The bartender is a wonderful gentleman who explained to us the significance of many of the drinks on the menu. We were very curious to understand why there were pani puris at the bar. We learned that they have a drink that includes the pani puris! That's so interesting! The menu is also wonderful. We tried the saag paneer and the panchmel dal. Both were wonderful. The dal was SO comforting! The breads were soft and wonderful. The drinks we ordered were both amazing.
