The service or ambiance are not why you come here. You come here because it's the best tandoori place in the freaking city. I don't know how they keep it both so perfectly moist and charred - most other places have dry ass tandoori. The dal ghost, boti chicken, and frontier rice are other family favorites. Came here for early dinner on a Sunday night, arrived around 6pm and it was pretty empty, but the place is HUGE so it also might have seemed more empty than a smaller place. This place was recommended by a Pakistani colleague and so even though it wasn't busy we decided to stay. Firstly the place is very casual, no fine dining here so set your expectations, like many places on Devon it's all about the food, less about the ambience. That said, while most of the restaurant gives off a casual vibe, they do have a giant fancy chandelier in each room which I thought was kinda funny but cute lol. Anyway onto the food... We knew the grill was where it was at so we ordered the frontier beef and chicken boti along with naan. Then to mix it up we also got the aloo gobi and mutton biryani. The food was great, and huge servings. Between 3 of us we were stuffed and if we didn't have a friend who has a huge appetite we would have def of over ordered. The grill options were def the stand outs, with the biryani a good accompaniment having rice but not the best I've had. I however LOVED the aloo gobi. For a meat centric place I was pleasantly surprised by how good this dish was! The service was fine but not standout. We were seated promptly, orders taken promptly, food arrived hot and at a good pacing. However there was little check in service once meal arrived (had to call them over for water refill) and when they brought check (with a bowl of fennel seeds to help wth digestion which was a nice touch) he hovered until we'd signed the check which I always find awkward. My friend and I had wanted to come here for a while, and then we saw Sarah S's IG pictures and helped us make up our minds. Hi Sarah! The space is pretty sparse, but clean. No nonsense is fine with me if it means the emphasis is on food. The menu is pretty huge--it's grilled meat heavy but still has some good vegetable options. What we ordered (or over-ordered) Butter Chicken Goat Curry Daal Palak Tandoori Chicken Bihari (beef) Kabab Garlic Naan We loved it all. The standout for me was the Tandoori Chicken and the Curry. Chicken was super tender and very flavorful, just a bit on the spicy side. The Goat curry was so very good--spicy, tender, just watch for the bones within each meaty morsel. We had so much leftover and were able to split it well between us. We are busy moms so good leftovers enough to make a whole meal is worth it. Service was friendly and food came out in a reasonable amount of time. I read that review that talked about service being rude and not treating female customers well. We did not get that vibe at all. Holy crap what happened to Khan's BBQ. Looks like it's been downhill sloping for awhile. There was a time when Khan's was some great tasting food and a tasty cup of Kashmiri tea. Those heydays are now a glimmer of a past long forgotten. What has happened to them? Did they lose prized chefs and cooks? Or did quality take a nosedive. Although they receive quite a following from tourists and locals, their foods have never been as good as they used to. (My last review was almost 8 years ago now.) I think most people that dine on Indian fare once in awhile will find this as pretty good. Being that I eat Indian & Pakistani food often, it's passable. Hands-down the best BBQ and biryani place on Devon. My family and I have been here many times. They're pricey but their portions are large and and they have an open kitchen - something rare in Indian/Pakistani restaurants. Did you know that Khan BBQ received Maxim Magazine 2008 award for tastiest Middle Eastern BBQ? Since it's Maxim, you can't take the award seriously. I don't even trust Zagat anymore. But, it's kinda hard to believe it deserves to win at a national level. I think it's even questionable in the city of Chicago. Just makes me wonder about the selection process. Anyway, I tried their tandori catfish which was spiced well, but too many pieces of bone to enjoy. The chicken boti dish was juicy, and had just the right amount of heat to it. I give the dish 3.5 stars. According to Michael Gebert (food reviewer), "meat explodes in your mouth like a Bollywood dance number in psychedelic technicolor." I enjoyed the dish enough to consider going back, but I'm not too sure I can concur with that description. But in my mind, it just won't be as satisfying because it would almost be the equivalent to going to a Milli Vanilli reunion concert. Okay I'm still a bit bitter about the award, because it's a bit of a slap in the face to tell me this is the best Chicago can get for BBQ. It almost felt like the time when Iliza was announced the winner of Last Comic Standing. But, did I mention Maxim also awarded Chicago as the tastiest city. Maybe, Maxim is right for once. This is one of the best meals I have ever had in Chicago. Khan BBQ is everything that you want from your local Pakistani restaurant. Very casual, the ambiance and vibe does not suggest the meal is as delicious as it will be. We tried many dishes, but the absolute must try's were the seekh kebab, the dal fry, and the aloo paratha. I recommend the chicken boti grilled in the charcoal-tandoor. The chicken is boneless, skinless chicken thigh pieces, marinated, and grilled. Get it with some naan or paratha, a veg, and you're good to go. The raita served at the table is a bit too runny, but tasty nonetheless. It pretty much goes well with everything on the menu. The bhindi (okra) is excellent. Spoon it over rice or scoop it up with naan; it's pure comfort food. If you're going to order the broast chicken, get it spicy. You really can't go wrong with crispy, spicy fried chicken. The frontier chicken rice was ok, but probably won't order again. I'd rather stick to tandoor-cooked meats + plain rice or bread. For a non-chicken, non-meat option, the tandoori fish is pretty good. It's well-seasoned, but not too spicy. My favorite breads are the plain naan and aloo (potato) paratha. The naan is cooked in the tandoor, giving it a nice flavor. The aloo paratha is carb heaven. The garlic naan is fine, but the garlic cooked in the tandoor is too crispy. And the onions in the onion naan are a bit much, not really necessary. Overall, this is the go-to place for tandoor-grilled meats and tandoor naan. read more

Disappointed. Way bummed. I saw this place on "Check, Please!" and had to give it a go. We were in the area tonight and stopped in. Two big misses, one hit. But that's only a 33% for the night and I'm not sure if that will warrant another meal here. Tandoori chicken = miss. It's not done in a tandoori oven but rather done on the grill and I guess that means its gotta be dry and jerky like in consistency. Not good. Not good at all. Chicken makhani = miss. I've had this done at other places MUCH better. Something is missing. Super bland. Seekh kabab = the only hit on the table. Flavorful, not dried out, a hint of spice. The only thing I'd order again here. The service was great! Super attentive and nice to our boy. But, then again, we were the *only* people in the whole place. Highly recommended. You walk in and the place is a beehive of activity. It's frenetic. There are people running everywhere and the division of labor appears to be "grab something and do something". Even the decor is frenetic, with elegant chandeliers contrasting with rolled-on white paint everywhere, even on the anodized window trim. Your food takes about 20 minutes to show up, and I still can't tell you if it's self-serve or waiters. But then you realize: the people are really nice and the food is absolutely fantastic. Most dishes have a smokey spice. The chicken is really tender. The kebabs have a nuanced flavor. The biryani is one of the best in town, probably because they leave the bones in the chicken. All the noise fades as you slowly start to fade into the nicest food coma you've had in a while. Come here and enjoy this place. Take your time and try different things. As a salesman in the area, I have been by here several times over the past 15 months, but never stayed. Partly because the owner has never taken the time for me to make a proper introduction, but no complaints there, I rarely get a warm welcome as a salesman. However, I eat on Devon street 2-3 times a week, every week, and this would be the first time eating at Kahn's B.B.Q. I have a friend that joins me for these lunches on many occasions and he had a friend in town from Egypt that was craving middle eastern BBQ, so together they picked this place to meet without consulting with me first. I was happy to join them. The service was on par for the area. No one is overly polite or even personable, however, I have yet to meet a sever with charisma or even character on Devon. Sorry, maybe I just look like the kind of guy you don't want to try with. Anyway, my friends speak the language and we were met with adequate attention. Dirty plates were quickly removed, waters were filled almost as they were being drained, and multiple servers were stopping by to see how we liked the food. The food was terrific. Indian food is quickly becoming one of my favorites, whereas before I was not a fan about a year ago. I have grown accustomed to the spices and staple vegetables and sauces typically used and can now accurately taste the differences in the almost identical menus that run the length of Little India. My suggestion to the owner would be that they spend time/money building out a better customer experience to meet their delicious food. If I can get the same menu at any of your neighbors to the left or right or across the street, then what keeps me coming back to you? I absolutely love the food here. It is absolutely delicious and of great quality. You can try anything on the menu, and you won't be disappointed. So why only three stars? The service is beyond terrible. I've gone here at least three times, and it's always the same. We sit down, we get our menu, water, and they take our order. We won't see them again until our food comes. After that, we won't be served again until we get the check. No water refills, no asking if everything is how we wanted it, nothing. We also seem to have had an issue with the workers of this restaurant. The servers seem to spend a majority of our time there staring at my boyfriend and myself. They sit there whispering back and forth every single time we come in. Maybe they do this to everyone? With the service being so bad, we won't be dining in anymore. read more

This is a mini review... I was in a rush and wanted to grab something a little different. I decided to try the Frontier Chicken Rice. I love the boneless chicken dishes that have emerged in the past decade or so at Desi restaurants on Devon. Examples of these are Frontier Chicken and Chicken 65. When I saw this rice combo, I ordered one for carry out. The Latino cook grabbed a huge plate of precooked white rice and threw it on the griddle. Then he grabbed a large portion of Frontier Chicken and thew it on the pile. He then mixed it with wooden spoons over the heat for a minute or two, and deposited it into a takeout box. and gave me 4 containers of yogurt chutney. I took it home and had a good size bow of the concoction. The bad: Cheap non-Basmati rice. The good: The combination is tasty, but not overly spicy or hot. It is a good dish for someone who is looking for a Desi taste but cannot handle straight Frontier Chicken or Ghareeb Nawaz spiced Biryani. I love the more intense stuff, but this has a place for those who cannot handle extreme spice. Upgrade to Basmati rice, and you may get another star. However, the claim to fame is the grilled meats, and i will try those in a few weeks when I return to Chicago. read more

I would give them 5 stars for their very polite and fine staff and service and serving the best aloo paranthas in the Chicago area. Portions are great too, they also offer complementary mint raita (Ayran in Turkish) and salad. But only giving them 4 stars because of only 7 veggie options of which 3 are dal (lentil) based entrees. So they have aloo palak, aloo gobi, okra, chhole, dal fry, daal & daal palak. Check out the pik of aloo gobi containing more oil than gobi; dal palak was 8/10. I've been here twice with some friends and I really love the food! I ordered the Chicken Tikki Masala, which is supposed to be spicy, but it wasn't really that spicy when I ordered it, so I would recommend asking for extra spice if you like it hot! I've also tried to Aloo Palak, which is a vegetarian curry with spinach and potatoes. This curry is much milder, but I still loved it! For bread, I ordered a regular naan and a regular paratha (this ones a little greasy). I've also tried a little bit of my friend's dishes including the Palak Gosht (Goat Curry that's really spicy) and the Tandoori Chicken (Indian style bbq chicken), which were both really good. I would recommend them all. I only give this place a 4 out of 5 because each time I was there to eat, the server gave us a hard time about paying with credit cards. We had a group of people and wanted to separate the tab, but they were pretty upset when we wanted to pay separately with credit cards. He asked us if we could only use 2 credit cards and combine our orders together. So I would suggest bringing cash to this restaurant so you don't have any issues. read more

I would say 3.85 to be precise. Definitely closer to 3 than 5, but my continued business speaks for itself. First tried it about 3 mo's ago, been back (carry-out) at least 5x's since. I preface by disclosing that I prefer dark meat to white. This is crucial since the Chicken Boti is an auto-order, and is boneless thighs. The mild light-green dipping sauce is not a typical intense Indian flavor, but considering it is just part of the spread, works perfectly. This place is a great value in my mind. The vegetable sides, Daal Palak (95% spinach 5% daal) specifically, for $6. Are you kidding me? Portion is massive. Same goes for the Biryani. The order weighs like 3 lbs, $9. The naan is solid, and again great value. The place is well run in that the order is always ready on time. Never have to wait. I've tried a few other items which were good, but it is very difficult to stray from the Chicken Boti. I should probably try another place on Devon to hold Khan to their burden, and not be loyal to my own detriment. If the market indicates Khan not to be what I currently feel it is, I will update. I feel like people should know at this point that you don't go into neighborhood eateries like Khan's expecting to be waited on hand and foot. That said, everyone here is very friendly and would love to offer their advice and suggestions if you ask nicely. You may have to get up a few times to look for silverware or a beverage refill, but that's a small price to pay for really fantastic food in big portions. The Bihari kabobs reminded me of Pakistan. The whole atmosphere reminded me of being back in Pakistan and going out to dinner with my family. Extremely authentic food here.
