I'm not sure what Mongolian food is supposed to taste like, but I can guarantee it's not this garbage. We ordered online and were told our order would be ready in 45 minutes. When we got there 45 minutes later the restaurant was almost empty, and appeared to have a "serve yourself" component to it, so I'm unsure how an order of three things could take so long. Food might be okay but you going to wait for it. I came in to pick up a to-go water and after I'd been here 10 minutes. Somebody came out and said oh sorry and started filling the bowls up. That person set the bowls down on the counter and left 10 minutes later. Two people came out of the kitchen and. decided to cook it. Absolutely no sense of urgency or give a darn. Love this concept - fresh meats, veggies, noodles, tofu, and all kinds of different options, and every customer gets to make their own combination however they would like. Pile it up into a bowl, add your chosen spice mixes, as well as sauces (be careful, some of their sauces need to be on the side in a separate bowl as they can burn on the grill if added too soon). It's a bit of a challenge to get the right mix of sauces & spices to make it what you want, but it's fun to try. I used too much of their house blend with basil (I love basil, so wanted more of that), but ended up heavy on the saltiness because of all of the soy sauce that was in the house blend. Next time, I'll try another mix of sauces. The staff were all very friendly & helpful. They took good care of us. Only downside was that they only offer Pepsi beverages - would have been nice to be able to BYOB some wine or beer, but not sure if that is allowed in NC (alcohol laws vary so much by state). But the food was fresh & tasty, and this will be a place to visit on our next visit to the OBX. read more

It was very very disappointing to walk in at 6:50 and be told that the wait would be 45min. I was ok with the wait, the waitress then changed it to "sorry can't have someone wait that long" . After a long drive I was looking forward to trying this place. read more

Disappointed after reading reviews. No pita bread as shown on their website. No direction on what sauces to use so my wife and I both ended up not liking our food and believe me we typically love Mongolian. Positive, if you can get the sauces right you will get 2 meals out of 1. read more

Not great. The inside lighting is horrific! I left with a headache. It was actually unbearable. They need to re think the lighting completely and opt for soft "mood" lighting. The entire concept, which I thought would be fun, left me feeling pretty gross. Small children to short for the sneeze glass were dipping tongs into meat the veggies. Who knows where their hands have been? Just thinking about the tons of people touching the tongs before me kinda freaked me out....ugh. Try somewhere else. I wanted to like it. We were excited to try Khans. My dad had never been to a Mongolian Grill while I have been to quite a few. I think Khans is a great addition to the OBX but I wasn't impressed with the cafeteria style dining. Get seated, get your menu, order your food, pay the cashier on your way out. I would prefer the server to handle the bill for me so I do not have to wait in line. Especially, if it is in the middle of summer and I already had to wait in line to be seated. The staff was friendly and the server was great at explaining the menu and process of working your way around the bar. The food was good and they have a good variety of meats, vegetables, and sauces to choose from. I would go back for sure, but probably not this coming summer as Khans is new, doesn't have a lot of seating, and will most likely be packed. read more

I chose this place because they offer tofu as a protein and vegan options are hard to come by for take out. The fact that you create your own bowl is nice, but I suggest sauces on the side because my food was really dry, almost as if there were not any sauce at all. About half way through I found a large chunk of cooked chicken flesh so that ruined everything. Can't recommend it to vegans or vegetarians at all. read more

We went in around 530 and were able to be seated immediately for dinner. Our server was great and attentive. I'm a sucker for Mongolian so I guess I don't have high standards but it absolutely hit the spot. They have several kinds of meats including beef chicken, pork, lamb, sausage and shrimp, along with a plethora of vegetables and spices. Im giving five stars because of: 1) Value - The cheaper bowl option is enough to fill up my bottomless pit of a bf, plus unlimited fruit for desert and soup or salad is included. 2) Friendly staff - Took the time to really explain what to do since we were a little confused about making our bowls. 3) Variety - Thought it would be just chicken or beef but there is everything from lamb, to cajun sausage, to calamari, and 2 entire sections of vegetables. With the choice to blend your own custom sauce and spices, there should be something for everyone. My bowl was delicious! 4) Cleanliness - this was a major point for us as we work in a place with a pizza buffet that gets TRASHED after every lunch service. When we walked in, it was clean, and every time after that. Would've been a 5/5 if they offered lo mein as a option. They make you choose between white or fried rice. If you want lo mein, you'd need to add it to your bowl which means you now have both rice and noodles in your dish - very strange. It's peculiar unlike other Mongolian bbqs. This place really hit the spot! Even with only getting one trip to the bar you get plenty of food in a large bowl to fill you up and even have leftovers to take home! Choose from a kids, regular, or large bowl. Grab a tray and your bowl and start with your meats, then your veggies, then your spices. Next scoop on the sauces and sit a couple of minutes and wait for the food!! They have excellent selections of meats and vegetables on the bar. The dry seasonings and the sauces were plentiful as well. Even if you don't have room for desert you do get a free cookie bar that has chocolate chip cookies and jello with whipped topping when we came. My wife and son enjoyed their meal as well and were very pleased. The miso soup was great as well. We will definitely return regularly when we are in town! Great service as well. Wow. All I can say is wow. We love Mongolian. So few Mongolian places up near us in DC (if you can believe that). So happy this place is opened up down in Kitty Hawk near our beach place. I've been to Mongolian all over (several places out in Seattle when we used to live there, DC, LA, etc.). Khans is very good by any Mongolian standards. Great ingredients. Good sauces. We have found our new "must visit" restaurant. So much fun to be able to choose from the freshest meats, seafood, and vegetables. So many spices and great sauces also. Then the chef cooks it all on the big grill and it's served so hot! Good selection of soda, beer too, or sake. Comfortable seating and the restaurant is kept immaculate. Nice staff too. First they gave me a medium size white bowl @ had me walk around a cafeteria style line and place uncooked food into it. I filled it with sliced beef,pork,mushrooms,water chestnuts,diced potatoes,spinach,raw cabbage,diced tomatoes,shrimp and more. Then topped it off with wine and spices. Great new place in the beach! The meat and veggie selection was good--my favorite was all the spices and sauces! This is different from most Mongolian places I've been to bc you leave your bowl and go back to your seat--then they cook it. It takes a bit longer than normal--could be bc it's their first week. My daughter also had the crab Rangoon and she said it was really good. She has the chicken broth soup. I had egg drop--both were good. I had a little fruit which was all good. The cookie was like a chips ahoy cookie--which was fine--I didn't come for the cookies after all! Definitely worth a try! read more

I really enjoyed my first experience at Khan's. Luckily, I was there with someone who had been there before, because knowing the ropes helps. The food was nice and fresh and you get to choose what you like in your bowl. They cook your bowl and deliver it hot to your table. Would like to see Hoisin and chili sauce on each table, however. I am updating and changing from 4 to 5 stars. I went there the first time when they were newly opened. 4 stars was unfair because I truly loved it. But now, I must say it is even better. You cannot have fresher food than they provide and you can customize your spices from Chinese to Polynesian to Cajun and so many more. The quality of the food and the flavor sensations earn 5 stars for sure. One of our favorites on the OBX, hands down. read more
