We tried the shrimp pad Thai and drunken noodles and both were just not that great. Service was fine, but there was just something missing with the flavor of the food. The food seems like it was freshly made, but it just seemed very basic and plain. We ordered both dishes mild, but the drunken noodles had a kick to them and there was a wasabi-like flavor. I'm okay with the spice, but my son was going to eat this as well so this was unexpected. I've been a loyal customer of Kuhn Khao Thai for about 20 years and have always loved their authentic food. Their Tom Yum shrimp soup has been one of my go-to dishes for years, which makes what happened during our most recent visit even more disappointing. There was a COCKROACH in my soup. We immediately brought it to their attention, and the owner's niece took the soup away. What bothered me almost as much as finding the cockroach was how casually the situation seemed to be handled. There was very little concern or apology, and honestly, the lack of shock or urgency made us wonder whether something like this had happened before. We were offered a replacement soup, but after finding a cockroach in the first one, obviously I had completely lost my appetite. To make matters worse, they still charged us for the rest of our meal and only removed the soup from the bill. After being a loyal customer for roughly two decades, I expected the situation to be handled with much more concern and professionalism. I really wish we had taken a picture before they took the soup away, but we were so shocked and disgusted in the moment that taking a photo was the last thing on our minds. I've been here twice and it's a nice and decent Thai food option if you're in the area or live nearby. I tried their Pad Thai (with chicken), Green Curry (veggie) and Kao Pad with pork (Fried Rice). I thought their curry was overpriced for the amount and not serve with rice. Pad Thai was too sweet for me personally. And the Kai pad dish was just okay. Nothing really stellar that would urge me to come back and try it again. Sweet ladies working as servers and ambience is non existent. If you sit near the kitchen, you may get hit by the spices in the air and make you cough. Limited parking in the lot but nearby street parking can also be found. Bring cash. Very very good Thai food literally my favorite location for Thai. FIRE FOOD HANDS DOWN SO DELICIOUS

Khun Khao is another typical strip mall Thai but with a key difference: The prices here hark back to pre-Pandemic times!  And the food has a down home, unpretentious yet satisfying feel to boot.  1)  Spelled in various restaurants as Mee Krob, Mi Grop, etc., this appetizer is made by quick frying of rice pasta vermicelli so it puffs up into a light, airy, crunchy slightly styrofoam like consistency.  Tossed in a thick slightly gooey, caramelized sugar, sweet sour tomato tinged sauce along with chunks of sautéed chicken, one whole shrimp, what may be finely sliced, chewy, fried Tōfu, raw bean sprouts, green onion, sprig of cilantro garnish.  It's a great way to enter into a more substantial meal without filling you up. Big enough to share with at least 3 other people as an appetizer.  2) Pad Kee Mao:  Made with wide thick rice pasta shaped like Italian Pappardelle. I opted for pork and Chinese broccoli which is mostly thin stems and leaves instead of the standard broccoli which is more florets.   The rice pasta, veggies are sautéed with soy sauce & possibly touch of sweet fermented soy bean paste, piquant red chile flakes, garlic, Thai basil, Nampla\fish sauce, possible vinegar for gastrique. Wok may be super hot or smoke essence is added since I sense a subtle smokiness.  Very complex mélange of flavours & aromas that has definite Umami, meatiness, sweet sour contrasts and creates a satisfying synergy. Minor point: pork is a bit tough & dry. Marinating the pork in a little vinegar would make the meat more moist and tender.  Default here can be a bit piquant in terms of chile heat. Make sure to let the waitress know if  you are a chile pepper wussy. Cash only. Indoor dining only. There are numerous Thai restaurants that have plain jane interiors, and this kitchen doesn't always honor requests when I asked the waitress who agreed to give me the appetizer first, but it came toward the second half of the meal. However, at this price point, I'm not going to quibble over the finer points of dining etiquette.  4 stars for prices that can't be beat unless one goes for Thai street food on the weekend at the Wat Thai where outdoor dining is definitely not ideal. read more

First things, they ONLY accept cash. That needs to be updated on their Yelp for certain. It's a pleasant restaurant with a pleasant staff, all Thai workers who seem to know their stuff. Space seems clean, not too loud, intimate but open. It's good for going solo, with a date, comfortable with 4, and with up to 8 people (10 might be alright). I'd say 30-50 is their max capacity in here. Their customer service is on point, especially for this city, and they seem earnest in helping as opposed to squeezing every dime out of you. Prices are "LA" reasonable (not this one $ "cheap" like people say) meaning you're not walking out without dropping $18-20; I'd say $$ for anywhere else. I got the seafood curry with rice (make sure the rice isn't extra). Thai tea is good... it's Thai tea. Medium spicy is plenty for someone who likes some heat but wants no part of fiery heat. Beware ye who dislike spice - Thai food is spicy at its best. The fish doesn't seem to have bones, but I checked anyway. The bamboo spice is not exactly edible, if you catch my drift. Brought my mom here for a Mother's Day lunch - and the service was okay. Here are some things I noticed while dining there: 1: The restaurant was very busy with dine-in guests and fulfilling order pickups. 2. They are short staffed and there were several tables waiting to either be serviced or get their bill. Eventually people would walk up directly to the register to pay so that they can leave. 3. The food is great as usual. Also, they can be accommodating even when the staff are overwhelmed. I ordered a dish and requested no onion, and despite receiving a dish with onion and pointing it out, they were able to fix the error and bring the food out in a timely manner. 4. My family and I have gone here countless times over the last decade. From other reviews, it's notable that this family business is a beloved spot for many families in the community as well. The main takeaway is that because the restaurant is understaffed, the wait times are longer than usual for ordering, receiving food and getting the bill to leave. Ugh - I really wanted to like this food. Perhaps I'm not used to "authentic" Thai food but there was nothing about this $42 lunch I enjoyed - to be fair, it wasn't all for me. I ordered the Khun Khao Combo appetizer and a Pad Thai. The wontons were chewy (think of a flauta vs a taquito - flour vs corn). Not sure if the wrappers were homemade and perhaps that accounted for the chewy texture instead of the crispy and crunchy texture I'm used to. The egg rolls were packed with glass noodles (I'm assuming) and very little of much else. The shrimp rolls had a similar texture like the wontons and were a bit fishy (didn't taste fresh). The Pad Thai seems old. The noodles were stuck together and there were clumps of seasoning throughout the plate. The bean sprouts were put on the bottom so they were wilted and tasted weird. First off I want to say they need more waitresses. The same lady kept running around trying to take orders and wait tables while the phone was ringing off the hook as well. The food was not the greatest. Our steamed rice came out cold and when I asked for them to heat it up it took long for them to bring it back out. We also ordered chicken satay with our other dishes but the chicken satay never came out. By the time we had already ate our soup and other dish we were ready to pay for our tab. A long overdue visit to one of my all time favorite Thai restaurants, and our original destination last October when we were disappointed by their temporary closing until early November. Causing us to end up at Thai Tasty right down the street. Good, but not quite Khun Khao! I mean this was the Thai spot that started me on a love for Thai food nearly 20 years ago, and where I first developed a love for Thai tea. And they still know how it should be mixed; not too sweet and not too bitter. Our experience today found the much criticized as rude waitresses welcoming, cleaning our table off with a smile before we sat down, and even that much maligned "short haired waitress" taking our orders. She may not be the most smiling from ear-to-ear individual, but I would not consider her rude. The 3 waitresses that served us throughout our visit did so quite professionally. And the male employee behind the counter gave us a sincere "thank you" as we were leaving. This has always been our experience here. Our order selections today: Chop Suey Soup with Chicken (small) Cashew Chicken Beef Chop Suey Steamed Rice Thai Tea All of which were extremely well prepared, fresh and very satisfying. Khun Khao is a definite whole in the wall - weird plaza - type place but I am all for it. Their food is flavorful and their staff is very accommodating. Their pad-see-ew is very satisfying and really enjoyed the flavor. Not too saucy but not too dry! I am a fan! it was a great portion. Their Seafood Soup is good but even if you ask for it to be less sour it is still extremely sour. I would say they are a bit higher priced than places on sherman way but still a good option. They have some premade food by their register which is good option for to-go! They also have Thai desserts packaged and ready for purchase; if you like corn and taro they have one that is delicious!
