The parking lot is a decent size so finding a spot is never a problem (there's always street parking if need be). Place is always packed but never overwhelmingly so. Servers are friendly and quick to fix any mistakes that may arise. For appetizers you can't go wrong with vegetable egg rolls, tofu, or fried chicken dumplings. For entrees we've tried the Orange Chicken, Mongolian Beef, Pad Thai Noodle, and Pineapple Fried Rice (with the last two being our go-to). The portions are family/shareable sizes unless you're absolutely hangry/determined enough to take it on solo. Overall it's one of the better Thai restaurants we've been to in the Valley. It's nice and cool inside for those hot summer days, it's a great place to catch games on their giant TV, and it's a solid choice for families on a budget. Make sure you order online on weekends, because this place is packed. I found this place when i was specifically looking for kai jiew (thai omelette? scrambled eggs?). I love the crispy edges of kai jiew, really can't get enough of it. This place has two kinds though: thai omelette (which looks like a common omelette but with ground meat inside and a brown sauce), and scrambled eggs (which looks like the 'thai omelette' that i've known from other thai places). Kai jiew / kai jeaw / khai jiao / kai jiaw (scrambled eggs) -- if you like those fluffy, crispy fried eggs that are mostly called thai omelette at other places, this is the one you want. They're not as crispy, but still fluffy and full of flavor. They're a bit pricey though, which i find a little weird since this is normally one of the cheapest dishes at most thai places. Thai omelette -- this egg dish is one i've only seen at this place. It's more like egg foo young than the thai omelette that i know. Still flavorful though. Crab fried rice -- one of the best! It might not be as full of crab aroma, but this is the only place where i found a balance in fried rice as both an entree and a side dish. Usually fried rice is either flavorful enough to be an entree, or slightly bland and best as a side. But Khun Dang's is the perfect middle ground: flavorful enough as an entree, but not so strong that it overpowers your main dish if you decide to eat it as a side. Chicken fried wonton -- nicely crispy, such a joy to bite into! Thai ice tea -- not bad, pretty okay. Not too sweet, and not the "packaged mix" kind. Thai ice coffee -- strong, reminds me of vietnamese coffee (in all the good ways). Service was warm and friendly. Got my order in half an hour, which is pretty good considering they were packed for sunday lunch. The place is nice for hanging out and chatting when it's not packed, but even when it is, the tables aren't arranged too tightly. You are greeted with courteous staff and what is consistent is the quality of the food that exits their kitchen doors. You cannot go wrong with tasteful & authentic Thai food. Johnny is the worst server. Very lazy and has a horrible attitude. If you ever dine in here , I suggest you ask for a different server if you happen to get Johnny. When you first walk in the place looks small but when you walk towards the back, there's tons of seating for large groups. Everything was so good. I highly recommend the following: Chicken larb medium spice which a ground chicken seasoned with lime and onion. So good over steam rice. The bbq pork was tender and had a great amount of flavor. As a Thai person, I was extremely disappointed by the way this restaurant treated me. In Thai culture, we are known as the "Land of Smiles" -- kindness, hospitality, and respect are very important to us, especially toward fellow Thai people. Unfortunately, I experienced the opposite here. I asked if I could add extra tendon to my soup and even offered to pay extra. Instead of simply accommodating the request, four different staff members came out one after another to tell me (in Thai) that it wasn't possible because of "limited portions." This felt shallow, unnecessary, and honestly insulting. Do they really expect me to believe they cannot add just a few more pieces of tendon even if I am willing to pay? The way they handled this left me feeling disrespected and unwelcome. It should not be such a big deal to adjust a dish for a paying customer. I left angry and will not be coming back. The balance of flavors wasn't quite there. The Tom Kha soup had mushy more coconut than tangy lemon flavor, so it tasted more like coconut milk soup. The larb lacked lemon also. What a find! This restaurant doesn't look like much from the outside. In fact, we had low expectations coming in.. definitely did a 180 once we got into the actual restaurant. It's quite large and has three different rooms for dining within the restaurant. The staff here is very friendly. The chicken was delicious and perfect and to my surprise, they added lots of sliced green onion. I loved the big chunks of mushroom that were also added gave just the right flavor! It was absolutely delicious. Although my husband wanted it a little spicier I thought it was the right amount of heat. We also ordered the fried rice and added chicken. We asked them to make it medium spicy. I could taste the spice, but my husband on the other hand said it was a little light on spice. I thought it had great flavor and added just the right amount of everything. The last dish we ordered was the pad soon sen with beef. This dish includes glass noodles, beef, and various vegetables, such as sliced carrots, tomato, bell pepper, and some fried egg and green onion. I thought the pad Juan sent was phenomenal. It was my favorite dish of the night. The noodles had loads of flavor, not spicy at all, which is OK it's not traditionally a spicy dish. We also ordered a couple of Sapporo drafts, which were ice cold to round out the meal. Usually when we go to Thai food, we order a lot more food but for my husband and I this was the perfect amount and we even ended up going home with leftovers. The flavor was on point and the fact they actually used Chinese broccoli is a plus. The portion size was good and it was hot when I got it. I miss living just a minute away from this amazing thai restaurant. It is by far the BEST Thai restaurant in the valley and will always stay close to my heart. They had/have another location in Panorama City which we used to go to many moons ago back when we lived over there. Then we moved to Van Nuys and this one was the closest. We were here for YEARS and it's a much bigger and nicer restaurant overall. I basically grew up here. My family would have big parties here but we would also just come here regularly for lunch or dinner. Since we've moved further out, we haven't been coming as much so whenever we do make it out here, it's always a treat. It's basically been the same owners/workers so they have treated us like family and given us nothing but excellent service. They are SUPER nice here and the food is insanely good. The taste of an authentic Thai iced tea is one of the best feelings. Their pad Thai is so soft and packs a ton of flavor. They have this crispy pork which we normally get on the side which is suuuuper crispy and delicious. It's very crispy so if you're not into that, might not be for you. And lastly, can't forget dessert! I'm not entirely sure if it's seasonal (could be) but the mango and sticky rice with coconut sauce is by far the best dessert you'll ever have. It has a balance of sweetness with a bit of savory from the rice. The coconut sauce makes it complete. The texture of the sticky rice together with the sweet, juicy mango, hits so good! There are Khun Dang Thai restaurants in North Hollywood and also on Topanga Cyn Blvd in Chatsworth. It seems the location in Van Nuys is the original eatery? It is a simple restaurant, with no fancy decor, and ample seating. Even though this was going to be my first meal at 3:30 pm, I wished to eat lite. Since they serve their lunch specials all day, I ordered the Pad Prik King with Shrimp from this menu. The beans were perfectly cooked to provide optimum color and crispness. The shrimp too was well prepared not raw and not overdone. Together, the beans and shrimp blended well with the curry paste. Even though I ordered the dish spicy, I also asked for Thai chilies with fish sauce. They brought me a good size jar (other places give you minuscule amounts of it). However, it was not all Thai chilis, there was also finely chopped jalapenos in the mix. That blunted the complete refined taste of the Thai chili. Anyway, my dish was good, and I enjoyed it. But what killed the whole afternoon for me was the eating environment. There were multiple tables where the parties had their iPhones on speaker and were conducting business and/or pleasure conversations while they were eating (most of the time with their mouths full). This without any respect or concern for the comfort or dining experience of other customers. Really? This was a first for me. I have never seen this happen elsewhere. When I first walked into, the restaurant had very dim lights giving it a very formal yet cosy atmosphere. The food was great and service was fast for how many people we had. The pad Thai was very sweet and a bit spicy! I highly recommend the mango sticky rice! The rice is sweet, creamy, and a little salty and still warm!
