This is my go-to spot for Afghani food across all the options in the bay area. The price and quality are always on point, and the owner is a really sweet lady who always provides awesome service and a great chat. I've tried many items on the menu at this point, but my highlights are the mantoo, chapli kabob, and rice (seriously, the rice is so good). The food is always packed with lots of spices and flavor, and the portions are huge. I think this place is seriously underrated - quality has been consistent over the years. This place was recommended to me and wow were we pleased! The owner served us and took good care of us. We were planning to go to our usual fave restaurant in Dublin but fortunately, I remembered Khyber Pass being a high recommendation. As soon as we entered, we were greeted and seated right away. The manager/owner recommended her mother's homemade spinach dish, which we enjoyed every flavorful bite of and are so thankful for her recommendation. Our meals came with complimentary salad and bread as an added, belly pleasure of a bonus! The salad looked like there was no dressing on it, but as soon as we took a bite of the salad, the practically invisible dressing was such perfection that we quickly finished our salads. Our family and I enjoyed a variety of their kabobs, which all came with their flaky, golden brown basmati rice and a juicy, grilled tomato on the side. We ended our delectable feast with a baklava desert. We plan to return again and again! The food used to be fantastic a decade ago. The food is now middling or okay but the service is horrendous. Have to wait for water or attention from waiter to an extreme degree even when it is fairly empty. Had one negative experience and gave it another try and it was even worse. This is the single best and most authentic Afghan place I have been to. The atmosphere is very authentic especially the sitting area is really beautiful. The owner was super friendly and she gave us a Bolani for free which was really tasty. But the best part was the food. Went to this restaurant today based on the reviews and was amazed beyond the high expectations I had already set. From the moment we got in to the moment we left, the owner of the restaurant directly took care of us and ensured we had a personalized experience. The restaurant not only has an authentic vibe, but it also has some of the best food I have ever had for these types of dishes. The lamb fell of the bone and the chicken in the combination kabob was some of the most flavorful and juicy I have had, especially with the touch of lemon. The fresh homemade bread tied everything together with its flaky warm texture and delicious flavor. At the end of our meal we had the baklava which was to DIE for with it's near perfect balance of flakiness and satisfying chewable texture with the sweet filling. Before heading out we had the afghan green tea as a palette cleanser and were taken aback by the soothing aroma of the hot fresh brew. It was a great way to finish a great meal and experience. I highly encourage people check out this restaurant and bring their families as well as the food is just killer. I am not sure what type of Afghan food these guys are serving, but it was the worst food we ever had. It tasted so terrible that after few bites we trashed the whole thing. First eggplant dish was not cooked right, it was bitter, dry, and had no sauce. Rice was prepared few days ago and they had microwaved it to serve. Their curry dishes were overpowered with turmeric that tasted awful. Please try another afghani resturant if you want fresh, authentic, and better standard of what afghan cuisine can offer. I really wanted to love it but it just fell short. I originally wanted to come here because of the cute seating area they have off to the side. So i was a little disappointed when we were unable to sit there. Either way i was prepared to really enjoy the food. We asked what the bestsellers were and they suggested the sampler for vegetarians so i went with that. My husband enjoyed his meal but mine was just eh. I'm usually a sucker for any veggies and rice but the spinach thing tasted like dirty sink water with no seasonings. The soup was cold. Idk if that's how it's usually supposed to arrive but I was not a fan. The only thing I liked was the eggplant portion which I did eat. The bread was a little tough and our glasses of water had tiny bugs swimming at the bottom. In fact the glasses actually looked a little dirty still. We decided to not make a big deal and just order a soda but still not okay. I'm assuming we came on an off day based on the reviews they have so do what you will with that. read more

Whenever my son has military duty at Camp Parks he goese to this restaurant. So after a Giants game we decided to stop for dinner on the way home. Now I understand why it's his favorite restaurant. I had the chicken kabob and it was delicious. The chicken was flavorful and I enjoyed the basmati rice. Sultana really took care of us and was a delight to talk to. Definitely recommend. Dined in for the very first time and I'm happy to say the food taste so much better straight out of the kitchen rather through a to go container! The owner Sultana is very nice, attentive, and helpful. I've been to many Afghanistan restaurants in the Bay Area and this has to be by far the best tasting of them all!! We truly love Khyber Pass Kabob!! When we lived in the Bay Area we used to visit KPK quite often. We love their bread, bolani, pumkin stew and so many other delicious vegetarian choices that they have. We are also fan of their desserts and the great service we always get there. After moving out of the Bay Area 4 years ago, we returned this past December to spend time with very good friends and we also took the opportunity of visiting those restaurants that we used to enjoy when living there, being KPK one of them. It was great to see the owner again and it felt so good that she recognized us!! It was like traveling back to the past and going back home! She assisted us with the same great service as she did in the past and we were able to enjoy those items from the menu that we missed so much. The restaurant looks as great as always! Very clean, organized and with its colorful sitting area in where you can complement the amazing Afghan cuisine with a more traditional sitting place. This is a hidden gem, for many reasons: -Lovely ambience. There is art on the walls, the tables... Everywhere you look is something beautiful. -Welcoming, kind service. This was my first time trying Afghan cuisine, but Khyber Pass made me feel at home. The woman serving us was so kind and attentive. She answered every question we had about the menu, brought out fresh chutney and bread to enhance our meal, and even gave us complimentary baklava - so good! -Delicious, comforting food that comes in generous servings at a fair price. You'll want to come with friends so you can try a little bit of everything. The few we tried were excellent: we started with the Borani Badenjan. The eggplant was tender, flavorful, and melted in my mouth. Then we had the Bolani; it's one of the simpler items on the menu, but it was my personal favorite. It paired beautifully with the yogurt and chutney. For the entree, we had the Qaboli Pallow: a sweet dish with lamb shank that slid right off the bone. Lastly, we enjoyed baklava and Afghan tea with cardamom: a delightful finish to a delightful meal. I can't believe I hadn't heard of this place before! 10/10 recommend. read more

I wish I had our hostess/owner's name - she made us feel like we were eating in a close friend's home. She frequently checked in on us and made sure we enjoyed our food, which she proudly stated was all homemade by her and her husband. The food was outstanding - hummus was some of the best I've had (so creamy and nothing like store bought hummus, and even better than the hummus guy, which I always purchase from the farmers market), lamb meat was so tender it fell off the bone, and beef was perfectly seasoned. In short. Best baklava I've ever had. Amazing food and astonishingly great flavors. Thank goodness I gave this place a try. Deserves a full 5 stars! The owner is so nice and welcoming! She even let us try the beef dumpling on the house. So delicious!! In depth. The baklava has a taste like none we have ever tried. The crisp and the crunch of the flakey dough was such an amazing contrast to the sweet honey flavor. I really hope anyone gives this a try it's amazing. Other places make their baklava too sweet and this is just the right balance of subtle sweet and amazing flavor from the spices. The best thing I can compare the yoghurt to is arroz con leche. It's fantastic! Lovely taste and very easy on the flavors. Nothing is overpowering just a nice sweet treat! The chicken and rice plate. If you're worried the prices are a little high the portions will definitely calm your worries. This chicken kebab plate filled me and my girlfriend up and we couldn't finish all the rice! The chicken has a great marinade and you can taste it's cooked fresh and made to order as opposed to just sitting in the freezer pre-marinated. It's amazing how something as simple as chicken and rice can be taken to the next level with the right techniques and combination of spices. We're definitely going for the chicken curry next but this is a great plate to order if you're trying middle eastern food for the first time. The beef dumpling... left me speechless. I didn't know what to expect until I took that first bite and just basked in what left me in a euphoric experience of happiness and feeling like a kid eating his favorite meal on his birthday. I've never really been one for beef but this side is worth ordering again. It was so good I had to call my mama and tell her she's gotta try this. All in all. Great food. Had the quabili pallow and it was delicious. The lamb shank in there was fantastic. Combined with the seasoned rice, raisins (possibly an acquired taste, but give it a try!), carrots and the green sauce they have on the table, there was sooo much flavor. Good stuff! read more

Khyber Pass Kabob has a really home-y feel to it! Beautiful, decorated interiors - it's all a vibe up in here. Plenty of parking outside in plaza also! Complimentary bread, ordered mantoo as appetizer, and 2 combos (one with chicken & lamb, and another with beef & lamb). The meat was tender and delicious, and so was the basmati rice! There's a mantoo as an appetizer, and there's another as a entree. The appetizer one is supposedly to come with four pieces (but ours had five) and the entree with eight. The green sauce placed on the table complemented the food really well - added some sour zest to give it some flavor. I recommended trying it! We dropped a friend off at the local Tesla dealership and wanted to grab a bite close by. We did a lil search and found Khyber Pass Kabob. What a find! The restaurant is cute inside, immaculately clean, it is a family business run by two sisters. Both sisters were running the front and were so kind. The food was delicious! We were given a starter salad, ordered the pumpkin (nom), bolani (large portion- and yum), koohbideh (drool) and the vegetarian plate (chef's kiss). I have been here three times. I generally like this place and the woman helping us HAS been lovely in the past. There were only two other occupied tables when we got there so it was not busy. It was off hours. Today, the food was not as good as it has been. Worse than that, we were in the middle of trying to order three desserts and someone else came in and she literally walked away from our table, mid-sentence, to seat them and take their orders! No "I'll be right back" just walked away like we did not exist and did not matter. I had to ask three times for the first cup of iced tea. Khyber Pass Kabob is one of those hidden gems in a random strip mall that would have gone unnoticed if not for Yelp. I was looking for a post-workout meal after hiking at Mt. Diablo, and of course my foodie-inclined Yelper soul gravitated towards this highly rated Afghan restaurant. Afghan cuisine is an interesting mix of Middle Eastern and Indian influences, featuring spices, yogurt sauces, and kabobs (how do you spell this... kabob or kebab?) The online menu is helpful and includes descriptions of all the dishes. There is a wide selection, including many vegetarian options. The online preorder process is convenient and easy. (++) MANTOO: I'm a sucker for dumplings, and the Afghan version was unique and delicious. They are giant! I'm the type of person who likes to eat dumplings, sushi, etc.in one bite so that it doesn't fall apart, but the mantoo did not fit in my mouth. The flavors were fascinating, with various spices that blended well with the ground beef. Although the appetizer portion only had 4 pieces, it was filling and hearty. I usually like thin dumpling wrappers (it's something of a cult among XLB enthusiasts) so I was initially taken about by the thick and chewy wrapper, but the texture matched the bold flavors well. I think I would have preferred it with just the spicy red sauce and no tart yogurt sauce, but that's just because I'm not a big fan of sour cream. (+++) SABZI CHALLOW WITH LAMB: I had a hard time choosing among all the specialty dishes on the menu, and I ended up with this because I like saag (that Indian spinach dish) and lamb kabobs. This was the perfect combination of my favorites! Everything was so flavorful, especially the spinach with herbs and spices, tender chunks of lamb, and basmati rice are all mixed together. The portion size was very generous. There was a side salad too, which I didn't care too much for. Overall, I had a great experience at Khyber Pass Kabob and will definitely be back when I'm in the area to try more items in the menu.
