If you think you can get something similar at a Mexican restaurant or by buying a grocery store rotisserie chicken with chipotle seasoning, you are so wrong. This is truly a thing unto itself, and it is delicious. I've had it pulled off the bone and served with rice and vegetables at other Peruvian restaurants outside of Asheville, but to have it mostly on its own, with sauces, a side of fries, salad, tortillas or rice, really enables you to appreciate the chicken for its amazing self. It's marinated overnight and during the rotisserie process, too, so it's not just the crispy, slightly charred skin that tastes of the spices and chiles, it's also the juicy, tender meat inside. It has a nice smoky flavor as well. Not hot spicy (unless you dip it in the red sauce from here, which is fire!). They also provided a creamy avocado sauce, which is great mixed with the red sauce to lower the heat just a little and give it some contrast. The fries are also great dipped into these sauces. The whole chicken with 3 sides was enough to feed three of us (all pretty big eaters) with some leftovers. The service was warm and friendly. There are 3 outdoor picnic tables by the side of the truck, but this is a place to get wonderful food to go that you can't get anywhere else in Asheville. So it enjoy at home or on a picnic someplace in the woods or a park. They also have dishes that are more traditionally Mexican (tacos, stuffed tortillas) and weirdly, also bratwurst. While the falafel roll still might have been better fresh, I wanted something that I could plausibly eat several hours later on a mountain without a ton of restaurants nearby, and that choice worked out well. Many falafel rolls come with add-ons that I don't like, but the pickled turnip offering here was both flavorful and colorful. I also got their fries, drizzles with tahini and parsley, which is a good way to eat fries. A case of baked goods and a small market section of canned items were also available. There was certainly space to eat inside or out for someone without my travel schedule. It's also notable that in addition to the usual falafel, they offer ample vegan options as befits the Asheville community, including a house seitan and some other vegetable and fake meat options. When I heard that the creator of the Asheville Taco Map named our local panaderia and Latin market Los Nenes one of his top stops for tacos, I was excited. That plus the fact that they serve carnitas on the weekend and I already stop in regularly to buy their fantastic homemade salsa, and this had to happen ASAP. So after binge-watching Netflix's "Taco Chronicles," we got in line the next possible Saturday behind lots of hungry families ordering steaming catering trayfuls of carnitas and chicharrones by the pound. It all looked great and we definitely over-ordered tacos. We settled on two carnitas, two barbacoa de borrego (lamb v. beef, thank you Google Translate), and one lengua and chicken taco each. The taquero behind the counter was all smiles and kindly let us sample the chicken to make sure the spice-level was OK for our sensitive babe (consider it toddler-approved). Good to know: 1) pay at the grocery register after you order, before you eat in/carryout; 2) don't forget to toss a couple bucks in the empty jug on top of the deli case labeled "propinas gracias"; 3) beans and rice are only available weekdays; 4) watch out for small bone chips in the barbacoa. The meats all seem to be made in house, while, according to the article, Los Nenes sources the tortillas from Georgia (https://www.citizen-times.com/story/entertainment/dining/2019/07/01/ashevilles-10-best-tacos-according-taco-map-creator-luis-martinez/1489531001/). The person behind the counter warms the tortillas to order in a panini press and makes the tacos right in front of you. (Try not to drool on the window glass.). Then get in line to pay the cashier and head up the steps to the refrigerator area to grab your preferred toppings, pickles, lime wedges, and house-made salsa (the green is gluten-free; haven't confirmed about the red, but probably). As a condiment junkie and raw-onion hater, this was the ideal setup for me to customize each bite. My stomach is growling just remembering! The tacos are overstuffed with meat and come encased in two thin, pliable corn tortillas. The meltingly tender, moist carnitas were our favorite, especially topped with some acidic toppings to blast through the rich meat. A little sprinkle of salt and squeeze of fresh lime, and they were totally crave-worthy. The barbacoa were also tasty, if a little less thrilling. Lengua we both found a bit dry and gamey - much better elsewhere. Chicken is breast strips stewed with peppers and onions and a tad bland on its own but a good bite with salsa. And the salsa roja is off the hook with charred pepper bits and a good dose of salt - so addictive. Overall I think there are better taco joints, notably Muñoz and the Los Tacotes truck in front of Root Bar in EAVL. And it's definitely a no-frills experience at Los Nenes - you're eating in a little butcher shop/bakery/grocery market. But Los Nenes is the first taco joint here I've found making traditional confit-ed carnitas. And they are really good! The line of folks hailing from Latin America knows what's up. We will definitely be back for carnitas! And I recommend buying the $1 Styrofoam cups of their homemade salsa anytime you want an upgrade for your chips, stews, or sauces at home. Thank me later :)

Given the…read morecomplementary relationship with the many craft breweries that don't do food themselves, plus all the local outdoor events for 9 months of the year, there are some truly great food trucks based here. Cassia is definitely one of the top ones. This is some of the best and most original Thai food I've ever had. They are a regular at Cellarest Beer Project in West Asheville. The food is prepared fresh, but the wait is not too long. And if you sit in the right spot, you may be able to enjoy the fragrant scent of Thai food as it is being prepared in their mobile kitchen. We started with the Firecracker sweet potatoes. These amazing little jewels are mashed sweet potatoes wrapped in the same coating as you'd normally have with a spring roll or won ton. They had a wonderful crispy outside with a flavorful sweet potato mash inside. The spicy mayo dipping sauce was excellent, but we also loved dipping these into the golden curry sauce that came with our curry duck. Where do you ever see curry duck BTW? The duck was cooked perfectly and not at all grisly or chewy. The curry sauce was absolutely incredible. Great flavor along with a nice kick. Between eating the duck and jasmine rice with the curry sauce and dipping some of the Firecrackers in it, there was literally not a speck of curry sauce left behind. We also had chicken Laab Gai. The mint leaves in this were really tasty and not overwhelmingly minty. The sticky rice was good. These came with cabbage leaves that you can roll the meat and rice up in to create a sort of Thai taco. This was good, but not at the same level as the duck curry. Maybe a bit more sauce would help. Prices are restaurant level but well worth it given this is restaurant-quality food or better. We paired the food with two fine beers from Cellarest. The Czech-style Moonglade Tmave pivo had great character. The Weald Oktoberfest Marzen lager was also excellent. Both went very well with the Thai food. Apart from maybe the dead of winter, this will be a place we go back to for more great Thai food.
