Founded back in 1982 in a basement on MacDougal Street, and it's stayed almost exactly what it's always been: low ceilings, brick walls, candlelit tables packed close enough together that you're basically eavesdropping on the next table over whether you want to or not. Godfrey is a regular here, and he never fails to make me split my sides. He's been holding down rooms at this club for the better part of three decades at this point, and it shows every single time. Then there's the actual reason people fly in from out of town for this place: the surprise drop-ins. I got lucky and caught Kevin Hart doing a full 45-minute set for my friends visiting from out of town, completely unannounced. That's the magic of this room. Chappelle, Chris Rock, Seinfeld, half the biggest names in comedy have all quietly walked through that door to work out new material in front of a crowd that has no idea who's about to walk on stage next. Food and drinks are great, though pricey. Doesn't matter. You're paying for the room and the possibility of a night like that, and I'd happily pay triple just for the ticket alone with no food or drink involved. Only real knock: the door guys aren't especially friendly, and if you land on their bad side, they will kick you out, so tread carefully there. You also lock your phone away in a pouch the second you walk in, which sounds annoying and is actually the best part of the whole system, since it means the room is actually watching the show instead of filming it. Service moves fast and you barely notice them working around you. Just make sure you order everything you'll need up front, once the room gets going, they don't want anyone breaking the flow to flag down a waiter. So -- very unlike me -- we left during intermission. I don't want to malign the show. The script (from what I gathered) was clever and the performers, talented. The theater itself is a nice, informal off-Broadway venue: a bar in the lobby, comfortable seating with good views throughout. I'll give Asylum another try. I've noticed they feature some interesting productions. (I'm sorry I missed "Naked Magicians.") But for last night's experience, a regrettable three stars.

The fries were ok, and my drink was really good. My coworkers ordered some mozzarella bites, chicken wings etc. I sampled the mozzarella bites and they were really good, better than my fries. Even our 12 year old would need to buy a drink! To add to the bad experience, the place looked like trash and was basically in the basement with metal folding chairs. We left, went to look for Tony who had apparently vanished faster than the comedians he promised us. If Tony put half as much effort into honesty as he does into his sales pitch, he'd probably have an actual career. Pro tips: - it is worth it. cover charge is not bad, you basically get to see 5-6 comedians. some nights are $25, but it was Sunday, so was $18. plus 2 drinks, so not an expensive night out. - definitely get a reservation. don't be those 20 people sadly standing in the standby section on the sidewalk, hoping to get an open spot. between the 3 jointly-owned clubs (incl Comedy Cellar & Fat Black Pussycat), they probably do 15 2-hour shows a night. You can always grab a resv for tomm, if tonight is full. - expect organization/chaos. they sort of have this down to a science. they line up the 200 people on the street out front, check ids, assign your table, get your phones into bags, etc. but once inside the system can break down a tad and long waits for drink service and your bill at the end, so be patient. - you will be forced to put your phone on silent and placed into a sealed pouch for the show. no exceptions. literally, your table # is written on the outside of the pouch. - be sure to check-in the minute you arrive, to get your pouch and then get in line (there is no one telling you this) - overall it's a fun time. comedians are talented, it's one of the best places in the country to see comedy and quite a NY experience.
