Did carryout lunch here today for the first time. It was easy to call in the order. Tried 4 rolls with about 8 pieces each, so plenty of food. The rice was soft, fish was very fresh and flavorful and ratio of rice to filling was perfect...spicy salmon and yellowtail with scallion were the standouts. Only miss was that they forgot to include ginger and wasabi and no one felt like walking all the way back for condiments. read more

I tried the Kiku Sushi special. This seems more like a local favorite which I enjoyed, and it was a pleasant walk from downtown to get there. The sushi was fresh, and beautifully prepared. The best part was the variety of fish and the different methods they used to cut them. Cutting them in different manners really changed the texture of the sushi which I liked a lot. The service was attentive, and it seems to be owned by a family who works hard to attend to customer needs. They were not crowded. In addition to the delicious sushi, they also offered a great salad as a starter. The dressing was the ginger dressing but was anything but typical. The specialty rolls have all been divine, but special shout out to the firecracker, pants on fire, and TROPICAL RAINBOW ROLL! Also, that miso soup should be sold by the quart it's so good! I walked in and asked if I could order to carry out and a nice lady said that I could. It was my first time trying their food.. I got the "chicken yakissoba" and the "philly tempura roll" and it was just amazing. Seriously, I love sushi and I have 2 favorites spots that I only order from there, even tho I probably tried like 15 places in Baltimore. Kiku now is one of my favorites and I'm so happy because its right near my apartament, so Ill definitely be ordering from there from now on. Trying to find a good sushi place that offers take out is extremely difficult. Kiku is in a row of awesome food places so it's easy to miss. BUT you have to try them. We ordered Jumbo shrimp tempura roll, spider roll and smoked salmon. Every roll was a hit. They are huge! And you definitely cannot finish it a in one sitting. They were running a little behind due to so many orders. So the 20 minute time expectation we had to wait a little longer. The sushi burrito isn't anything like the one from shoyou (a little on the skimpy side) but having variety is nice plus it's always cool to find places that carry poke and sushi burritos. Sushi was fresh and I think these were the most flavorful spicy tuna and spicy salmon rolls I have ever had, but we were the only ones dining in the restaurant and while he was friendly and a very sweet old man, he sat in the back while we ate so we didn't get refills on water and had to ask him for the check. This place was so great. My boyfriend and I travelled to Baltimore for the day and came across Kiku. It's family run, and they are doing dine in and carry out during COVID. The sushi was absolutely delicious. We ordered the dynamite roll, spicy tuna roll, and salmon roe nigiri. The man who made it was so fast. He had more than 5 orders including us and we received our food within around 15 minutes, even though he was making everything by himself. They gave us some extra nigiri with our rolls which i thought was super thoughtful. The quality of the fish was superb. The sake i ordered was smooth and delicious. This may be the worst vegetable and shrimp tempura I have ever had. The batter was crunchy and dense. The broccoli still had uncooked floury batter under the surface. Really just all around bad. There may have even been cornmeal in the batter. Don't order this. Poke bowl: got the ahi bowl. Not great. The presentation was actually really nice, but the flavors just didn't really work. There wasn't much seasoning anywhere in this thing. The dressing was minimal and the rest of the ingredients were just kind of in the bowl. Kiku Sushi was a, "let's give it a try" spot. Ever since then, my girlfriend and I have gone there and we don't even consider an alternative. We probably go maybe once every two weeks. They are extremely friendly, family owned and very affordable. They often have a good crowd and every time we're in there, orders are going out the door for GrubHub. The waitress and (we believe new) waiter are very friendly and the rolls are fresh, creative, delicious and very filling. The owner here is the chef/cashier/waiter - i.e. he is superman of Kiku Sushi. There are these art decorations drawn on tissue papers that look older than I am and he has these pictures of his kids on the wall. I never had the gut to ask the owner what his story is but whenever I come here, it's like a Korean TV drama - I imagine in my head that he opened his shop for his loving wife but she is no longer here (yes, cry at this point) and now he continues to keep this shop opened for his wife and his kids. Back to reality, it's best to get sushi and sashimi here. He puts his little twists to his sushi - my fav is the scallop nigiri where he puts a dollop of Korean Ssamjang. I love coming here because I find his style unique and delicious. I love supporting local hole-in-the-wall businesses and what's best is that once he starts recognizing you, he is very generous with his portions. One thing to note though... he operates solo so service will be slow but cut him some slack, everyone! read more

4.5 Stars Walking into Kiku, I wasn't sure what I'd find. The decor was reminiscent of a traditional old Japanese restaurant, but the Korean radio station in the background gave away the chef/owner's ethnicity. Kiku focuses on sushi and sashimi. Over the multiple times I've eaten here, they have always been unable to make the hot dishes listed on their menu. However, they have a wide selection of nigiri, sashimi, and maki/temaki rolls. Their fish is above average quality, and their prices are extremely reasonable. Their sushi is composed in traditional Japanese style, so no Americanized, mayo-cream cheese-filled, deep fried, sauce laden, BBQ rolls. However, expect some minor Korean twists; for example, the Hotate/scallop nigiri is topped off with Korean Ssamjang sauce. In summary, Kiku is the place to go for inexpensive sushi. The service can be on the slow side since the owner is the sole chef/waiter; however, if you get to know him, he is extremely generous and frequently gives you complimentary dishes during your wait. Overall, the good fish quality and low prices earn Kiku 4.5 stars, and the caring owner helps to round up to 5 stars on Yelp. read more

This was the 6th stop on my Baltimore Sushi Tour, but also the very first sushi bar that I patronized in Baltimore. It has a special place in my heart. :) Kiku is a tiny mom & pop place. Limited seating with only one chef (pop?) and one waitress (mom?). When crowded, expect to wait a bit. Kiku's menu covers your standard a la carte items, but also a variety of dinner combos and appetizers. There are a number of chef special items, that I've always found to be awesome. Also, non-sushi meals are available. Since this was restaurant #6, we just ordered and shared the 12 piece nigiri sushi combo - a variety of nigiri including tuna, salmon, red snapper and surf clam in this particular case. All were super fresh and delicious. Miso soup and salad were included. Overall, this also a favorite of mine (personally) in a much different way than joss. While Joss is much more experimental, offering much more rarely found items (which I love), Kiku is the perfect basic sushi bar that offers incredibly fresh, carefully prepared, and well-presented food. From the outside, this small Japanese restaurant doesn't look like much, but what it lacks in appearance it makes up for in taste. Located on Light St. in Federal Hill, it is within walking distance of the Harbor and downtown Baltimore. The inside of the restaurant is cozy - with seating for only about 20-25 people at a time. The decor is modest, but the atmosphere is still very comfortable. The sushi chef (who I think is also the owner) works behind the bar in the center of the restaurant. Though this was my first time there, the friend that I went with was a regular and quickly struck up a conversation with the staff. The sushi was amazing and the selection was fantastic. The miso soup is delicious (and priced well at $1.75 for a good sized portion). They also make a great Sashimi salad that has fresh raw salmon, tuna, and yellow tail in a soy-based sauce with noodles, avocado, and wasabi. From the sushi menu, my friend told me that everything is good and recommended the spicy tuna and spicy salmon rolls. Being afraid of the spicy recommendations, I had the shrimp tempura roll with avocado, the Philly roll, and the Horizon Roll (which had tuna, salmon, red snapper on the outside & masago, avocado, and asparagus inside). Everything was delicious and the presentation, while modest, was very nice. Even though we went at 8 p.m. on a Saturday night, we were seated right away (though I was told that the later in the night it gets the more chance you have of encountering a wait). The service was excellent and within 5 minutes of getting seated we had already put in our drink orders. The prices were reasonable and dinner for two ran about $40 with tip. I highly recommend this place and cannot wait to go back and bring some other friends along! read more
